Wow what an amazing nursery! I've always followed the nursery on Instagram but have never visited until now. There are about 17 greenhouses to walk through and one of them has a rare plant section that you have to request to see. The items in there are super rare and of course or more expensive. The employees there are super helpful and answered all my questions. They offer easy payment through Zelle. Plan to spend at least an hour walking around. They mostly have cactus and succulents and many outdoor shrubs and ground covers. read more

Mezcala has an amazing selection to choose from, but it could be overwhelming if you have no idea what you want. It's well organized and the staff is helpful at helping you find what you need. Or just fine yourself time to talk the grounds and see what you like. While it's true you didn't find prices on anything, I always find good value in my selections. If what you are looking for is several acres of cactus and succulents, this is your place. However, if you are looking for more specific types of plants (California native, drought, tolerant, etc.), good luck! This place is so completely disorganized, there is no chance in finding specific plants that you want, and with the list of different Plants I wanted, there's no way I'm going to ask the one person I saw working to walk me through the entire nursery to find each of them. The greenhouses are in shambles, some of them falling apart. The signage is almost nonexistent, and when you go through here, you'll see plants randomly thrown on top of other plants. There was one section where a creeping succulent had completely overtaken two whole sections of a greenhouse , totally developing multiple other potted plants. I really wanted to support a small family business in Long Beach. I get that they are probably radically understaffed, and don't have the time or energy to have the level of upkeep of a place like H&H nursery in Lakewood. Mezcala is probably more cost-effective, but my ADHD cannot handle what's going on here. read more

Stumbled upon this nursery from Instagram and decided to swing by today to see all 18 of their greenhouses. I love that they label their houses with whichever can be found within. They have plenty of common succulents, rare and imported succulents, indoor plants, and etc! The whole location actually has 2 different nurseries and the workers from both are very kind and helpful. Though it may seem like no one if around, someone seemed to be in the shade or working on potting somewhere! I would definitely recommend making sure it's not too hot out before coming or to bring a hat/sunglasses with you. Also avoid wearing sandals or open toed shoes unless you want to have dirty feet! Pricing is pretty affordable based on the quantity and quality of the plants. The imported/rare ones are definitely more pricier but given what they are, it is understandable. **If using GPS, they'll lead you to the entrance that you can drive into and be at Mezcal's Nursery or you can drive all the way down to Rosales' Nursery. This is my first time at Mezcala Nursery. I've always wanted to go. My husband had an appointment in Long Beach, so I have the perfect excuse to go. They have a wide assortment of plants. I made a bee line for the Hoya, Succulents and Cacti. If you check in the Yelp app you get a free 4 inch succulent ! Yessss ! It appears that there are no prices listed. They take credit card, but no tax if you pay by cash. The gentleman who rang up my order was very nice, and offered us a cart. I found two hairy cactus ! I love hair furry cacti ! I got a wide assortment of plants, and they were very reasonable ! If you live near or are in the area, you have to stop by Parking is tight, and you have to park in the dirt, but hey it's worth it right ? I don't have a green thumb, but that's irrelevant because Sergio certainly has one. In fact, not only does Sergio has a green thumb, every fiber of his being is green. Next to Groot, Sergio is the best human representation. His chlorophyll count is even higher than Master Yoda's. Even though it was my first time visiting a plant nursery (I worked in a nursery, but one with human babies), my love affair with succulent plants began circa 2016. We were meant to be together. I've been admiring them from afar for years. At first I oogled them on Pinterest, then I found myself caressing them in neighbor's yard in the middle of the night. This illicit affair went on for years before my wife found out about it. Finally, I gave in to my urges and I even took my son with me. The nursery is a gigantic menagerie of succulents. My head spun and I was dizzy with giddy. Fortunately, Sergio was a professional matchmaker and we were soon blessed in marital bliss. After an hour of frolicking in the bed of plants, my urges were satisfied and I came over and over again to the cart to stroke my babies. Sergio carefully tugged each one of them in the new pots and cooed them for the ride home. I am now the proud parent of three gorgeous sedum planters. They bring unspoken joy to my life. Huge nursery! If you want to explore a huge nursery with tons of plants and succulents then this is the place! They have several big greenhouse tents containing several indoor and outdoor plants. I really enjoyed walking through all their greenhouses and exploring. It's really nice to walk around on a sunny day. I was in the mood for succulents this time I visited and grabbed a bunch of 2 in pots for only $1. What a steal! I also grabbed a baby root pot which was only $12. It was too cute to pass up! There are tons of plants on display. I wish the plants were labeled clearly. We had to use Google lens to know what they were, aside from the kinds we already know of course. It's a very low key operation and I did not find anyone who could possibly answer questions. I suggest doing your reading and knowing ahead what you want, how they will be as full sized and most importantly if they are child or pet safe. I saw several containers of a plant I read before was not and it had the prettiest foliage colors of blue-green depending on lighting. It's the rue plant. I copied this info from the site : "Care should be taken when handling rue plants. The sap of the rue plant is often irritating and can burn or leave rashes on people's skin." What a gem of a nursery! I was looking to gift succulents to some friends and to my surprise this was less than a mile away from me! I have driven past this hundreds of times and thanks to yelp I have found a beautiful place for my future plants. Upon entering (park on the street, Orange no parking inside) it is massssiiivvveeee! A little overwhelming bc the extent of plants I'm exposed to is Lowe's or Home Depot. But if you are a plant lover, this is your haven! I didn't have time to roam around as I'd like but I was directed to where the succulents were and it was succulent galore!!! There are succulents sporadicly scattered about but where I was, were rows and rows of them. I just needed 16 2-inch ones and they are such a great deal for $1! They were beautifully taken care of and it was so hard to choose, since they were all so beautiful! Upon leaving I wasn't sure where to check out but the kind employee that was in the same area I was said he will call over someone in the center and he will meet me there, and he did fast check out and appreciated the little boxes I could carry the plants in! It's hot. Really! If it's sunny it's like blazing at the nursery so bring a hat and your water bottle... but also your wallet. Nice succulents and cacti abound. Friendly and helpful folks with some under $4 tacos thrown in. They had small to large sized plants and decent pricing (this is Long a Beach after all). I bought my daughter a little plant in hand-painted pot and the guy even planted it for me (for $15 total). That's cheaper than Sill or Lovely Root my online plant friends you know what I mean. Go local and like I said take a water bottle and hat if it's sunny. read more

Went and spent a couple hours here and it is like Disneyland for plant people. Upon hearing me say this, a gentleman piped up and said " let me show you Epcot center, then. I was impressed by the individual attention such a large establishment was able to offer. We covered probably 20 percent of the grounds in our time, took home a wagon full of new and exciting plants, and promise to be back for the other 80 percent. read more

This place is a gem! First of all, the nursery is huge! They have so many different types of plants and rare ones too! Rarer plants are locked in a gate so you need to ask a worker to show you. I love this plant nursery when I have time to walk around and willing to do some treasure hunting. They have so many different greenhouses for different kind of plants/cacti/succulents. They also carry some uncommon imports which is always fun to look at. Their pricing is pretty reasonable; some plants don't look their best but if you're willing to look around, you'll find some good deals. There's also a smaller nursery connected to this one if you walk all the way down; they're separate though so make sure you pay the correct person for whichever plants you pick up. I'm not super knowledgeable about plants, but I was blown away by the selection here! There are tents on tents full of all sorts of plants. The place is nice and open - even the tents have holes for ventilation. Note that it does get quite toasty inside the tents, especially if you go on a warmer day like I did. The staff that helped out were knowledgeable about where to find specific plants and even provided tips on expected growth and care, which was super helpful for someone who doesn't know much about taking care of them. My only qualm was that the person helping me - knowledgeable and nice as he was - was not wearing his mask properly. It was a chin diaper! I'm glad the transaction was quick and short. There wasn't hand sanitizer, and the staff didn't sanitize between transactions (after handling cards, cash, etc). I wish there were more sanitary/safety measures in place. That's the only reason I chose to knock off a star from an otherwise awesome nursery. Also, a tip for those paying with card: they charge a 10% fee if you use a credit card. Wasn't a huge deal since the cost didn't end up being too much, but I could see that being a bit of a charge for those who purchase some of the more expensive plants. Might come back post-COVID or if additional measures are put in place. Otherwise, may need to hold off on plant shopping here. read more

I died and went to succulent heaven today! I found Mezcala on a Facebook succulents group and today made the trek and wasn't disappointed! They have greenhouse after greenhouse of succulents of all types - including strings (dolphins, hearts, pearls, watermelons) that I'll be needing soon for a milestone birthday gift. I used to be a huge Mezcala enthusiast, but my last few trips were a witness to the decline of the quality of this place. Hopefully the Owners see this and open their eyes, because they have become blind to what is happening right in front of them. I can't go there without getting bitten by bugs that I can't see so there is an issue here that is not being treated. Weeds everywhere - in the containers, in the ground surrounding the plants - it's really bad & makes the place look messy. The tunnel covers are all ripped and plastic is hanging everywhere. So many neglected leggy succulents. Even their once gorgeous Imported Succulent tunnel was a mess & needed an overhaul. I hope they clean it up & Make it what it once was. read more

I'm so happy to have found Mezcala via Yelp & IG! Sergio answers all my questions via IG right away for availability. He's very professional and knowledgeable when it comes to all plants. All plants come in all sizes of pots and prices are reasonable. The nursery is huge! Every time we go, it takes at least 1.5 hours to look around. Expect to go home with a handful of plants too. No thanks. I'd rather support small local businesses. Plants here are taken care of with love- not shipped in a box and not cared for. The purchased 14 plants and a bag of soil mixed with sand for $80. Rigo helped me pick out the best plants and load my car. They give you a kids red wagon to load up and pull around. The air feels better here. Tons of healthy plants to choose from in every size. The larger the more it costs. Open on Sat and Sun! Came here for the first time and was WOW'd by how big the nursery was right off the bat! You'd never guess this treasure is tucked away in your neighborhood.
