    Sloppy waitstaff / owner

Really disappointed in this place. The only thing worse than the service was the food. Cook never heard of basted eggs? So settled for over easy came out yoke on one side of the plate egg white in the other. Restaurant supply country gravy mix I remixed with too much water. First cup of coffee took 9 minutes to arrive and food order took over 35 minutes there were only three tables seated Waitress was sloppy short tempered and rude. Dining room floor was filthy even during what should now be extra attention to cleanliness. Scattered tables were all left filthy and cleaned as needed briefly with Lysol spray and the same rag over and over. Cook not wearing mask waitress not wearing hers correctly nose out and pulled it down whenever she spoke to anyone. Cooks never pulled their masks up. Very disgusting filthy place

Great Food. I was honestly surprised. I've always wanted to try this place but have been scared bc it looks kinda run down and the previous reviews aren't great. But I thought I'd give it a try and wow the food was great. I got the roast with brown gravy. Yum! The place wasn't the cleanest but it wasn't like dirty either. Just the waiter wasn't cleaning it as fast as she should be. Service was decent.

Part of the appetizer sampler, forgot to take a pic before we started eating, there was a lot more lol. All of it was great!

They have gone very downhill. They got a health inspection in the 80's. I do not plan to eat there again.

I am a bit confused. When I looked the reviews from J's aren't that great! I'm not sure about those…read moreexperiences but I can say that ours today was radically different! Here's how our trip to J's went! I was traveling through Irvington today on my way home. Decided to swing through J's Fired Up n Smokin' and give it a try. I was crunched for time so I was going to order to go. When I walked in I was met by Joyce and Bill (Owners) and Amy ( a new waitress). They all immediately made you feel at home. I knew I wanted a brisket sandwich and was taking a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich to my son. They had the meal packed up and ready to go quite fast making the Philly Cheesesteak from scratch. While they were preparing the meal I had a look around the restaurant. It's a small, quaint country restaurant. It's not trying to be some big city restaurant. They're more concerned with giving you great service and superb food than having a fancy ambiance. As for the food I have been working on losing weight. So, I took a fork to the incredibly large portion of brisket on my sandwich. I don't know exactly how much was on there but if it was a huge sandwich. The sauce they use is phenomenal. There's a hint of sweet buried in there somewhere that is simply fabulous. After I finished eating all the incredible brisket I closed the to-go container and set it aside. This lasted for about a minute and I ripped it open and ate every single bit of that giant sandwich bun soaked in that delicious bbq sauce and brisket. Then I picked up my 15 year old son. He said, "What's that?" I told him it was a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. He said he wasn't hungry right now but would eat it later. About 100 yards down the road he asked what smells so good? I told him it was his sandwich. It was devoured shortly thereafter and announced that it was the best Philly Cheesesteak he's ever had. Coming from him that is saying something. We'll definitely be back! Superb service, awesome food, clean restaurant and restrooms, and simply, great people. I've eaten in restaurants from New York to LA and Washington state to Florida and those were two of the best sandwiches we have EVER had!

Good food, good people. Everything was fresh and yummy! Give them a try always good to support…read moresmall business!

There were six of us and we ordered five different items - 2 opted for the country fried chicken. Every meal was full of home cooked flavors and cooked to perfection. I had the daily special of soup and salad. The salad was fresh full of crisp lettuce, bacon, cheese, vegetables and toasty croutons. The bean soup was perfect and came with a large slice of fluffy sweet cornbread. My husband said the gravy was the best he has had in recent memory and paired with the chicken and mashed potatoes, he would definitely come back for. The bbq ribs fell off the bone and my brother in law loved them. The coconut cream pie had mile high meringue and was light and coconutty with a flaky crust. The chocolate cake was deep dark and chocolaty! The blackberry cobbler was hot and delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant for food and ambiance!!

There are lots of items on display almost like a small museum. Don't forget the gift shop. I was thrilled. Obviously popular, the clientele was experienced, but diverse. While I did not hear German discussion, I might have. Next to the restaurant is a building that is their catering. It was as big as the restaurant. Walking in, the sign said to seat yourself. Sometimes that means a delay in a server finding you. Nay, nay. She was prompt, attentive and knowledgeable. She was great. Because I scanned the menu ahead of time, I knew that I wanted the trio of wursts. They were among the best I've had. My server talked me into the potato salad. It was great. Along with the wursts, I ordered a salad and completely enjoyed their house made blue cheese dressing. The beer menu had Spaten Special. Spaten is a rare treat for and this is the first time I have even enjoyed it on tap. When I was leaving, I was able to buy a six pack of harder to find German beers. My adult son loves German beer and did not even recognize one I brought that he loved. Restraining myself, I made only modest purchases in the gift shop. This will not be true next visit. As far as the museum aspect, there are many displays. Down one wall are many car models, train models, liquor decanters and numerous other German items. I sneaked into a closed dining room with great displays of stein and wine history. A few times a year, I head from TN to IN. I will make this a two day stop. Oh, did I mention there is a hotel right next door to keep my safe from driving after enjoying a few great beers on tap?

Atmosphere is fun, it really embraces the German decor (saw a review or too calling it kitschy, in a good way, which I think is a fair description). Service is friendly and attentive (and in the costumed German garb to keep with the themes). Lots of classic German dishes (several schnitzel varieties, brats, spatzel, etc.). I won't say anything I've had over the years blows me away, but haven't had a bad choice either. The Wiener schnitzel I had most recently was tender and tasty, with a perfectly fried batter, and the German fries were nicely crisped on the exterior and beautifully seasoned. Good beer selection (including some brewed for the restaurant), reasonable wine list...love that you can go all out and have your beer in the classic giant boot! Small gift shop as well, some souvenir items as well as some candies and food options.
