    Sloppy waitstaff / owner

Really disappointed in this place. The only thing worse than the service was the food. Cook never heard of basted eggs? So settled for over easy came out yoke on one side of the plate egg white in the other. Restaurant supply country gravy mix I remixed with too much water. First cup of coffee took 9 minutes to arrive and food order took over 35 minutes there were only three tables seated Waitress was sloppy short tempered and rude. Dining room floor was filthy even during what should now be extra attention to cleanliness. Scattered tables were all left filthy and cleaned as needed briefly with Lysol spray and the same rag over and over. Cook not wearing mask waitress not wearing hers correctly nose out and pulled it down whenever she spoke to anyone. Cooks never pulled their masks up. Very disgusting filthy place

Great Food. I was honestly surprised. I've always wanted to try this place but have been scared bc it looks kinda run down and the previous reviews aren't great. But I thought I'd give it a try and wow the food was great. I got the roast with brown gravy. Yum! The place wasn't the cleanest but it wasn't like dirty either. Just the waiter wasn't cleaning it as fast as she should be. Service was decent.

Part of the appetizer sampler, forgot to take a pic before we started eating, there was a lot more lol. All of it was great!

They have gone very downhill. They got a health inspection in the 80's. I do not plan to eat there again.

Here's how our trip to J's went! I was traveling through Irvington today on my way home. Decided to swing through J's Fired Up n Smokin' and give it a try. I was crunched for time so I was going to order to go. When I walked in I was met by Joyce and Bill (Owners) and Amy ( a new waitress). They all immediately made you feel at home. I knew I wanted a brisket sandwich and was taking a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich to my son. They had the meal packed up and ready to go quite fast making the Philly Cheesesteak from scratch. While they were preparing the meal I had a look around the restaurant. It's a small, quaint country restaurant. It's not trying to be some big city restaurant. They're more concerned with giving you great service and superb food than having a fancy ambiance. As for the food I have been working on losing weight. So, I took a fork to the incredibly large portion of brisket on my sandwich. I don't know exactly how much was on there but if it was a huge sandwich. The sauce they use is phenomenal. There's a hint of sweet buried in there somewhere that is simply fabulous. After I finished eating all the incredible brisket I closed the to-go container and set it aside. This lasted for about a minute and I ripped it open and ate every single bit of that giant sandwich bun soaked in that delicious bbq sauce and brisket. Then I picked up my 15 year old son. He said, "What's that?" I told him it was a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. He said he wasn't hungry right now but would eat it later. About 100 yards down the road he asked what smells so good? I told him it was his sandwich. It was devoured shortly thereafter and announced that it was the best Philly Cheesesteak he's ever had. Coming from him that is saying something. We'll definitely be back! Superb service, awesome food, clean restaurant and restrooms, and simply, great people. I've eaten in restaurants from New York to LA and Washington state to Florida and those were two of the best sandwiches we have EVER had!

Good food, good people. Everything was fresh and yummy! Give them a try always good to support…read moresmall business!

There were six of us and we ordered five different items - 2 opted for the country fried chicken. Every meal was full of home cooked flavors and cooked to perfection. I had the daily special of soup and salad. The salad was fresh full of crisp lettuce, bacon, cheese, vegetables and toasty croutons. The bean soup was perfect and came with a large slice of fluffy sweet cornbread. My husband said the gravy was the best he has had in recent memory and paired with the chicken and mashed potatoes, he would definitely come back for. The bbq ribs fell off the bone and my brother in law loved them. The coconut cream pie had mile high meringue and was light and coconutty with a flaky crust. The chocolate cake was deep dark and chocolaty! The blackberry cobbler was hot and delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant for food and ambiance!!

There has been a small pub below the restaurant called " Walter's Pub" . It was not open when we arrived; but it was also a great view. There is even a large scenery binocular mounted on the deck. It was a nice sunny Thursday afternoon, so you could see the river so well. We went into the restaurant and were greeted by a display with what was hand made candy, cookies and cannoli , awesome touch. We were seated by the window giving us a constant view of the winding river. We were promptly seated and asked if we'd like any beer beverages: Crystal the waitress provided the specials of the day. We settled with the fried chicken plate and the cod plate. Drink list is fairly standard normal list ( Miller Lite, Bud Light , Coors) with a few exports "Modelo". Not many in the restaurant when arrived but customers started to increase. Food took awhile but we weren't in any hurry. The restaurant was fine up with nice easy to the eye decor. You really get the feeling of an establishment that's been here for a long time taking care of customers. Food arrived and it was a nice portion, considered is a tad higher price, you get nice sized portions. Crystal was very good and nice waitress and took care of us. A small detail but I really liked it was waitress/waitress's name was on a card in a small block of wood on the table- small but nice touch. Many people don't ask or hear their servers name so it's sweet. Chicken was nice plump breast's, nice coating and so moist as I took a bite. Very , very moist and tasty. My wife had the cod sandwich; came with nice sized 2 portioned fillets. French fries with both and not bad, crispy. I had coleslaw as a side; it was very tasty if I must say! The cod was really tasty and had a nice crust to it as well. We took to go box with 1 of each piece cod and chicken home. But I was intrigued by the cannoli; so one to go. Nice place; scenic and great people and food! Stop if you get the chance! Thank you Crystal!

The pretzel bun was heated appropriately and had the right amount of flavor. The optional spicy mustard is really powerful. My only possible complaint would be that the spatzle were a bit on the soggy side, perhaps overcooked. That said, the spatzle also come with an incredible sauerbraten gravy. My only regret, really, is not having had dessert.

Atmosphere is fun, it really embraces the German decor (saw a review or too calling it kitschy, in a good way, which I think is a fair description). Service is friendly and attentive (and in the costumed German garb to keep with the themes). Lots of classic German dishes (several schnitzel varieties, brats, spatzel, etc.). I won't say anything I've had over the years blows me away, but haven't had a bad choice either. The Wiener schnitzel I had most recently was tender and tasty, with a perfectly fried batter, and the German fries were nicely crisped on the exterior and beautifully seasoned. Good beer selection (including some brewed for the restaurant), reasonable wine list...love that you can go all out and have your beer in the classic giant boot! Small gift shop as well, some souvenir items as well as some candies and food options.
