Over the four years I've been in MHK, I've been to this place several times a year and have watched as the service, speed, atmosphere and quality have really gone downhill. I'm not sure if it has changed hands or if they're just really skimping on cleanliness and quality of staff (I know it's hard to find restaurant help in Mahnahattn), but last night was the last straw. We found a very long hair in one of our rolls. The waitress was one of the nicer ones I'd had in recent visits, but they didn't even comp us the whole roll, only $3.75 (maybe half the roll?). It was a paltry gesture. The booths are all torn, the blinds are filthy and mostly drawn (so you can't see just how dirty it is?) and it can take a very long time to get your food here. Sushi quality is still okay, but it's not worth it coupled with the other factors. These folks need to step it up! read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Manhattan. Primarily, I think the food is amazingly fresh and creative, especially considering the geographical location. In addition, the service is friendly and the staff is ready to offer recommendations for tasty rolls to try. Some people might be happy to know that there are plenty of things on the menu that the less adventurous might be more likely to enjoy than sushi and sashimi. Finally, the price is right and the place itself has a clean and relaxed atmosphere. I would also say that I like their fried rice more than any other fried rice I have tried. This is my go to sushi place. It's casual,they have a great variety of sushi , tempura, and hibachi , and the service good! Better than Umi.

I've had great experiences here, though I will admit I'm not a sushi expert (I'm from Manhattan, what do you expect?). I don't have to eat much to get full, but even so I find this place to be reasonably priced, especially since I was under the impression I'd be paying an arm and a leg. The food is yummy and fresh, and the atmosphere is laid back yet clean and fresh. I almost wish more people were there; this seems like the kind of place that would have an amazing atmosphere if it wasn't empty so often. I guess they get most of their business from delivery. All in all, I give it four stars, simply because I have had an experience or two where my food takes a while to come. read more

Bleh. Not terrible but not great. I've had some pretty awesome fish in my life, but this wasn't even close to great. Most of their stuff is tempura fried to mask this fact. The sushi was palatable, but when attempting the sashimi, I gave up. Especially the mackerel. Tasted like it was previously frozen, salted, and dried for three-plus days. We made an order for delivery. The confirmation said the wait time was 45-60 minutes. One hour and 30 minutes after I ordered, I called the restaurant to check up on our order, and all they said was that all orders for delivery were out. Two hours after I ordered I called again. I got the same answer. 2 hours and 10 minutes after we ordered we received our food. It was not great. While it was still warm (surprising due to the wait time) it was bland, unusually mooshy even for sushi, unimpressive. read more

Not impressed at all. It took more than twenty minutes for me to get my water. Just water. Never mind me the fact I was ignored by my server and watched three tables that arrived after me get their food and drinks. The "salad" was just frozen lettuce and thousand island dressing, and the sushi quality left a lot to be desired. It's sad that this is considered a top sushi spot in Manhattan. read more

We were a bit skeptical of this place due to the mixed reviews but we decided to go on the recommendation of a friend... And we're so glad we did! I love the fact that they still have a lunch menu on Saturday (most restaurants limit lunch to weekdays only). We sampled the pork katsu bento box, chicken and shrimp hibachi, & gyoza. The pork katsu box was delicious- it came with rice, katsu, 4 pc California rolls, and 2 pc gyoza. All were wonderful! My husband got the chicken and shrimp hibachi which he said while good, Umis hibachi tasted better overall- plus, they had a subpar Japanese yumyum sauce that didn't really even taste like it should've. Prices were great, bento box 8.95, 5 pieces of gyoza 3.95, and my husband's chicken and shrimp hibachi (from the dinner menu) for 14.95. Overall, great selection of Japanese cuisine and good rolls. The food here is actually pretty good. However, if you have any issues with your order (like the waitress getting it wrong, or any other reason at that) then expect terrible service/quality. I ordered the Philadelphia Roll, but received the Spicy Philadelphia Roll. Well the spicy Philadelphia has mayonnaise on it, which I can't eat because I'm pregnant. Normally, I would've just eaten it and moved on, but I can't eat mayonnaise at this particular time. I explained to the waitress that my order was wrong and I couldn't eat that roll. They sent us the correct roll that looked torn apart. I had to eat it with a fork because the roll was purposefully put together terribly. I have never seen a roll rolled together with that low of quality, neither at Green Tea, or anywhere. This is what tells me that they did this purposefully. I viewed that as an invitation to never come back, sent personally from the Green Tea staff. I choose to no longer give my energy/money to an establishment that treats customers like this. It's as though the owners of this restaurant saw some photographs of a good sushi restaurant and based the recipes on that. Everything is bland. The salad has some kind of thousand island dressing on it (not ginger dressing, as you might expect.) The value is quite poor. You'd be better off making your own Japanese food, even if you're unexperienced. read more

Excellent service!! Excellent food!! All at an affordable price. I love the meso soup, pork dumplings, and spiny tuna roll. Normally I order pick up but they also deliver. Staff is very friendly, which is not always the case in a town full of college students. I try to eat here atleast once a month. Their location is conveniently located near the ville, and they have a nice big parking lot. I would recommend Green Tea to any of my friends. Give it a try!! read more

OMG. Worst sushii place ever. Hyvee has better food than they. Rice is dry and crumbly, salmon turning light brown on the edges, roll meat was scraps making for an uneven flavor-- even the miso was so salty it was hard to eat, almost as if they reused yesterdays soup. Salad served with a ghetto ketchup and mayonaise on an entree that cost 15 bucks! Ginger was turning red at the edges also, yeasterdays fair reserved today. Want sushi? Go somewhere else, ANYWHERE but here....Must say that if you know sushi, you know its not here. Theres an incredible lack of attention at premium costs and an incredible facade at japanese dining that is in fact fast food style sushi at top rate cost. This place has terrible service ! My husband and I went here on Valentine's Day. We were greeted at the door and asked if we wanted to go to the sushi bar, we agreed and sat down , it took the server 15 min to come and take our drink orders (the place wasn't busy at all) and another 30 min for us is receive our drinks (which were bottled beer! How long does bottled beer take to deliver seriously??) when the couple next to us who came in after us had already placed their order (they had a different server). We finally ordered our food and asked for soup first . Soup took another 30 min to arrive and our food came a couple min later. The food was good but not great. The server never came back to ask if we wanted drink refills and when we were finished eating she came back and said "are you done?" , dropped our check, never told us if we leave the payment for her or if we needed to pay up front, never offered desserts , I mean come on , it's VALENTINES DAY. She was not friendly until it was time for us to pay, which we did not leave a good tip at all , my husband didn't want to leave anything at all but me being a server before I didn't want to completely stiff her. She was a very young brunette girl , steer clear. I get that it was Valentine's Day and she probably wanted to be out with her boyfriend but jeez make the best of it , smile and make some money ! Disclaimer: I almost feel guilty about writing this review because of the few times I have gone to Green Tea and have had nice meals. I'll say it now, go for lunch when it's cheaper, the service will be better. Here's the story for tonight. We had a group of six, we entered the restaurant around 8:05. We are standing at the podium for a minute, someone walks by and tells us that we will be "served in just a minute." Okay, that's fine. A few more minutes pass by and what appears to be the manager walks over and asks how many are in our party. We let him know, and he begins pushing a table together. Right then we notice that nobody is sitting at the (Zashiki-style) square table where you can sit cross legged on pillows and we ask if we can use that table, to which they happily oblige. Roughly ten minutes later we still had not been visited by the wait staff. We had already decided what to order, and had discussed various reasons why it was taking so long. The restaurant, which isn't very big to begin with, wasn't even at capacity and there was no wait at the door. The waitress finally approaches the table and makes an offhand apology about the wait. Okay, that's fine. We don't waste time and make our food order because we anticipated having to wait even longer for our meal. Brianna, the waitress, takes the orders counterclockwise from the closest person to her. We order for appetizers calamari, edamame, and two orders of gyoza. For our dinners we order separately a rainbow roll and a 'Sakura' roll (this was the first order); an order of beef soba and two small rolls; and a 'Sakura' roll and an 'American Dream' roll. Another 10 minutes (and I truly wish I was exaggerating) rolls by and the waitress brings out our waters. At this point we are all getting a little weary of the trend of the night. It's a good thing we were just trying to enjoy each other's company, and not maintain any sort of schedule, because it took inexcusably long before some of us got our entrees. I know this because one of our group members said, "Guys, we've been here for over an hour, it's literally past 9:00." The waitress brings 4 of the 6 of us our food. We wait for roughly five minutes trying to be polite and not start eating until everyone was served. Eventually we quit the pleasantries because we are hungry, but the other 2 in our group still hadn't been served their food. One of us actually gets up from the table to inquire with the staff. The manager comes over and is noticeably confused about the missing dishes. This is when our waitress, Brianna, pops back over to our table and says "I'm sorry, I completely forgot to put in your rolls. It was my mistake." She offers to put in the rolls now but the others decline because none of us want to wait any longer. The odd part of the waitress's mistake is that the order she failed to give to the sushi chefs was the first order she took at the table! I still don't understand how, of all the food she did get put in, she somehow managed to forget the two orders that were first on her order ticket. I can deal with a botched order, but you better be very apologetic. The meal has been overall unsuccessful to this point, our table is discontent. The 4 of us that got our food finish eating, and Brianna gives us all our checks. Here's the real kicker: as she is handing out the bills, she gives the 2 that didn't get their entrees the bill for their calamari! Not only did you completely forget two of your customer's orders, but you have the audacity to not even offer to comp. the same two customer's appetizer?! That's unacceptable. To be honest, I think that shows a complete lack of sympathy with your guests and is pretty disrespectful. The sushi I had was flavorful and well-made, it was the horrendous service that left a bad taste in my mouth. If you want the abstract of my above rant, here goes: we were slow to get seated, slow to order our food, our drinks were never refilled, two of our party members didn't get served, the waitress's apology was unconvincing, and to top it all off they didn't even offer to comp. one single $6 plate of calamari. Despite bad service, I'm usually not one to leave a poor tip. On a normal night I often leave 20% or more if we're having drinks. However, in this extreme case, I am not ashamed to say I let my bill reflect how unsatisfied I was with the experience. I will also admit, it's not the first time I've had a below average experience with this one particular waitress. I'll reiterate my initial comment, go to Green Tea for the lunch special. As a dinner engagement, go elsewhere or don't go out at all. read more

Good food, poor service. I love the sushi, I think the prices are decent, so my husband and I tend to go there sometimes on a weekly basis. The service, however, is very poor, or inconsistent, I should say. At times, it is ok--not anything special, but other times, I swear I won't be going back again. I would hate to see them going out of business, but they are clueless about customer service. We have waited 15 minutes for someone to bring us drinks (the place was not crowded), and just now, we ordered takeout, and I get home and find a tiny container with soy sauce to share with my husband (we ordered four different types of rolls). This place has great food, but more often than not, I feel incredibly angry with their poor service. read more
