What could improve? The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly! Everything! The health department needs to close this place down. This used to be my favorite place to eat! The sushi was awesome, pleasant atmosphere and delicious food! The last time I was here was nearly a year ago and the place was so filthy dirty, floors, walls, bathroom, awful! Here's what I saw and what I was served. The pics speak for themselves! Still dirty, the floors the walls, the window shades were splattered with food! I don't think they've done anymore than a swipe here or there to clean! The bento box needs replacing! Finish is all gone and hard to tell how well it was cleaned from the last meal served in it! Then there's the food! The only edible part of the meal was the miso soup which was hot and yummy but was served in an ice cold bowl which chilled the soup so fast it was Totally cold before I could finish it! The 4 small pieces of California roll were good, so were the 2 Gyozas, and there was a small pile of white rice! Those were all ok! Nothing to brag about but edible! Now the bad news! The salad had enough dressing poured over it to dress 3 or 4 salads that size and it was just a few leaves peeled off a head of iceberg lettuce, and not cut or torn into anything close to bite size! With only a fork and chopsticks as utensils, it was impossible to try and break into anything edible especially with it drowning in the dressing! Now, the bento box I ordered was supposed to be Chicken Tempura. They also had a veggie tempura version, so I assumed this would be all chicken tempura! When served I did not see any chicken. It all looked like veggies to me! When I asked where's the chicken, the server pointed to the two long skinny French fry looking pieces! That's Chicken??? And the rest of the tempura was veggies! One bite of the chicken about gaged me! Dripping in cooking oil with no flavor at all, barely tasted like chicken. Had to drown it in soy sauce to choke it down! Note the oil pooled on the foil from under the tempura! Yuk! If this doesn't make you puke... well I just simply won't be back! read more

First time visitor. I was craving sushi and this joint popped up as a recommendation and it looked like a decent one with a ton of favorable reviews. I do regret not ordering some sashimi, which is one of my top tenders when indulging in the food of the sea. I gave the golden scallops a try, not too bad but a little tangy for what I expected. Eel sushi was pretty good. Wasn't 'too keen on the las vegas roll, it was over powered by the cream cheese, but of course still palatable. The place was packed and raging with conversation. I ordered to go online and the timing was efficient and the staff were nice and fast as well. The prices were pretty good which is great for all the seafood lovers out here in the area. Not to bad for Kansas. I would recommend staying clear of any sashimi as most places that are very Americanized such as this make your stomach sit uncomfortable a bit. The food was fine and tasted quite tasty as-well as quick and kind service. If you go here, definitely get a sushi roll and maybe some chicken sticks. I decided to give this place another chance, and the second time I ordered the chirashi entree. This is definitely not the place for authentic sushi or sashimi. I ordered the chirashi. It came in a plate, not the traditional Japanese bowl. It was decorated with a sprig of parsley instead of Nori or sesame seeds. The portion sizes were too small. The Maguro (tuna) tasted like it had been thawing in the fridge for 2 days. It was chewy and sinewy. The Sake (salmon) was chewy too and quite bland. I believe there were Saba (mackerel) and Hotate (scallops) but they were no better. I wish the chef had included Unagi (grilled eel) or Ikura/Masago (roe) instead. The Tako (octopus) and Ebi (shrimp) were the only edible ones - apart from the Tamago (eggs). But even the Tamago wasn't fluffy or layered; it had the texture of soft cheese. In fact the Tako was alone in being reasonably tasty. Had it not been for Kansas, even a 2 stars would've been generous. I've been here many times before. The quality of the food has gone down significantly. That said, the others who were with me seemed to really enjoy what they had ordered - tempura, gyoza, teriyaki, and udon. The warm sake was good. The bottomline: The food is great as long as you're not looking for traditional Japanese seafood. read more

From the outside, the place may look subpar. But the inside is unique & quaint! The waitresses I've had always seem very in touch with the menu & with me & other customers. The only reason this isn't five stars is the Hibachi dinner meat portions seemed a little small compared to the prices (the lunch prices are wonderful!) & the YumYum sauce tasted spicy to me (I'm a wimp when it comes to anything slightly spicy, though). BUT they make their sauces in house & I've grown to love their Eel sauce & Sweet Chili sauce (don't ask me how I don't find the Sweet Chili spicy but can't handle the YumYum sauce, I have no idea ). I was really excited to hear that a 'real' sushi restaurant had opened up in Manhattan. However, I didn't check it out immediately especially after a few friends told me that they were unimpressed by the selection, especially with the price they had to pay. I finally went today, and I am very happy that I did. The interior had been completely remodeled (it used to be a Chinese restaurant). Customers can choose to sit at the booths, regular tables or at the sushi bar. The decorations were very simple. Of course, a Japanese restaurant would not be complete without the maneki neko (lucky cat). All in all, they did a good job with the renovation. On to the food. Although I had originally came for sushi, I decided on something else instead. As soon as I got the menu, I scoured the appetizer and there it was on the list: HAMACHI KAMA!!! I ordered that, and a lunch special bento box with beef negimaki which comes with salad, miso soup, california role, gyoza and rice. The first thing to come out were the salad and miso soup. The salad was very fresh, crispy and juicy. The miso soup had just enough amount of tofu and wakame and I have to say that it's much better than Umi's. I think Green Tea sushi bar uses the miso paste instead of the powdered one. The bento came soon after. The california roll was okay. I was a disappointed with the rice (I'm a big rice eater). It was more like the long-grain rice than the short grain Japanese rice. It wasn't fluffy at all either, nor was it even warm. I could only assume that it had been sitting in the rice cooker for a bit. BUT, the beef negimaki was almost HEAVEN. It made me come close to shedding tears of delight. I would definitely recommend this dish. Although the hamachi kama is listed as an appetizer, it came a bit later because it took a bit longer to make. I didn't mind and I figured, maybe I would save the best for last. I was right. The hamachi kama was crispy and yet moist. There is a side of daikon, which I thought was unnecessary even as a garnish. The star of the dish was the fish itself. Although I have to say it doesn't beat the one at Kato, I have to say that they did a great job broiling the fish. I ate it all within seconds. I also wish that they would've been a bit more generous with the tobiko that was sprinkled here and there on the fish. I will definitely go back and I would sure want to try their sushi as well as their udon, soba and katsu dish. Also, I noticed that they didn't seem to have a drink menu because some sake would've been the perfect companion to go with a bowl of edamame. What I would really like to have is either green tea or even better if they would serve genmai tea. That would definitely make it a wonderful experience. read more

I came here when I first moved to Manhattan (over a year ago) and never wanted to go back. That should say enough. The music was blasting at the bar, the chef refused to look me in the eye or engage in any conversation (which to me is the fun of sitting at a sushi bar), and the quality was unappetizing. I left expecting a stomachache. Fast forward to having my husband living here and my refusal to eat anywhere but Umi for sushi. He had not joined me on a sushi date in months because I have been cooking a ton at home and sometimes eating sushi when we were out of town. He finally offered to take me for sushi last night, and I agreed to give Green Tea another try so he could finally try out a different place. We walked in a little after 9:30, and the restaurant was preparing to close down. The music was still blasting at the bar, and the same indifferent chef right in front of us at the bar avoided eye contact and conversation whatsoever. Our server was nice, and answered some questions. We got hot green tea and water. Here nigiri is 2 pieces per order whereas Umi allows one piece per order, which guarantees for more variety for the same price. Given that I would be limited if I ordered nigiri, I ordered the chirashi so I could get a variety for a reasonable price ($15.95) as well as a salmon skin hand roll. My husband ordered the mango roll appetizer, a rainbow roll, an Alaska hand roll, and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad came out first and then the mango roll, with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, mango, and avocado in a rice paper wrap with a sweet mango sauce. This was pretty tasty though the sauce was a bit sweet. Then the chef made the salmon skin hand roll and set it in front of us on the counter but did not hand it off. We had to ask if we could take it as the seaweed got soggy. I bit into it and determined the salmon skin was not edible. It was fatty, almost raw skin with no crunch or heat to it. I have only had something almost as bad at a restaurant in Vegas, but this should not have been served. It was not remotely cooked or crunchy. We told the server I did not want it, and he told the chef who argued he cooked it in his toaster. He offered to either toast another one but said it would be the same or deep fry it in the kitchen. I make salmon skin at home and have eaten it at many sushi restaurants, and it has never been deep fried. I just said I did not want it or a replacement. The hubs then got his rainbow roll which looked pretty good and was topped with masago, as well as his hand roll. This hand roll had soggy seaweed as well. Lastly, I got my chirashi, which was decent, with kani, tamago, tako, saba, maguro, sake, escolar, tai, and ebi. The quality still was not there. The best fish on the plate was the salmon. I had to wait quite a while to flag someone down to get ponzu sauce since the chefs disappeared, and some kitchen staff were eating dinner at the bar and chatting with the servers, on the other side from us. When we got our bill, we were charged for the inedible hand roll so we had to ask to get that taken off of the bill, which irked me. However, the server did refill our teas regularly so that was appreciated. Overall, the atmosphere just isn't my cup of tea (pun intended), and the quality isn't there. I will stick with Umi as my go-to place in town for sushi. read more
