My son and myself wanted some Asian food and we tried this place. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and sat immediately. The waiter was very friendly and told us his faves. We wanted to try a little of everything besides the normal Chinese cuisine. So we got a tempura sushi roll which was fantastic. Korean Bulgogi plate, and the Thai Basil combo beef, chicken, shrimp. The food was amazing, server was great, and the restaurant has a bistro ambiance feel too it which was very nice overall lunch today. I will definitely be back and recommend. Wow..... where to start. Only good thing I can say is the food was provided at the time promised. How can you goof up Chinese food THAT bad?? Pad Thai-terrible! Jalepeno chicken- YUCK! And the Kung pao was gross. Soup was bad and the spring rolls were edible, but not delicolious. Maybe I'm lucky I didn't try the sushi. I'll stick to Jongs that other side of town, they're not open as much, or as often, and they're always booked- but their food is good! Sooo dissapointing because Topekans need good places to eat. We stopped by Oriental Express in Topeka after an appointment in Overland Park, and as always, it did not disappoint! This is our absolute go-to spot for Asian cuisine. The food is consistently excellent, the service is outstanding, and the portions are generous. We live in Manhattan, KS, and despite the hour-long drive, it's completely worth the trip every single time. The prices are more than reasonable for the quality and quantity you get. Very good and always fresh. Even when they are super swamped they are pretty quick bringing our appetizers. I love the egg drop soup and my husband loves the wonton soup. We tend to stick to some of our favorites and don't venture out much from generals chicken/shrimp, Mongolian beef or Thai basil chicken. We always say we will but we love those dishes so much. The portions are pretty big. We could probably split one lunch meal but we enjoy the leftovers so we never do. ;) read more

Very good value and great drive in for pickup. The cashew chicken was very good and I especially liked the hot and sour soup.

This little restaurant is a hidden gem. Always great for a fast delicious lunch, they even have sushi to order you can watch him make it at the bar. Tried Oriental Express in Topeka tonight. I ordered vegetable tempura and the pint size hot and sour soup. Soup was okay but not spicy at all like you would expect. The tempura was a soggy pile of grease. I tasted it and the vegetables were of good quality but you could literally feel the grease running out. Pressed on it and you see the grease puddle up around my finger. It tasted like old grease too. The order was a pick up. There was no plastic ware or napkins, so that was a challenge as we are visiting and in a hotel. I thought the food was going to be good because the restaurant was very busy when we picked up our order. It's a nope for me. read more

Case in point, this place offered Thai, Japanese, and Chinese dishes, and didn't execute a key Chinese dish, Mapo tofu, with too much love. Service was excellent! Ambiance fine. The bad news: every food item had been cooked and reheated (just barely warm too). Egg roll was spongy, I took two bites and stopped, it was not freshly prepared. When we decided to locate a Chinese restaurant that had dine in, we first selected a Vietnamese restaurant. We, a family of 7, arrived to discover that the online information was not accurate and so I searched for a close restaurant. And, lo, we ended up at Oriental Express. I was happy with the dining area being pleasant in temperature- I have a condition that makes me chronically cold- and the restrooms clean and comfortable. Okay- we're off to a great start! We were seated right away and immediately attended to for our drink order. Since it had been so terribly long ago that we've enjoyed our favorites, I asked for several entrees (4) and extra plates. Our waiter smiled and had no problems accommodating my request to dine buffet-style. I also ordered crab Rangoon and egg drop soup. [We all had water] We were served our waters immediately and the water was very on attentive to refills. Our appetizers came to us hot, fresh, and within minutes. We were nearly finished when our 4 entrees arrived. We had sweet and sour chicken, sesame chicken, cashew chicken, and beef with broccoli, 2 orders of steamed rice, and 2 orders of fried rice. We all ate to our heart's content and still have leftovers. Portions were pleasant sized for sharing (1 order of any entree would have comfortably fed 2 hungry adults). It was fresh, hot, and absolutely delicious. Being new to Topeka, we don't know which restaurant is good and which is not. This one is VERY good!!
