I have been eating at Green Shutters for the last forty years, through a number of owners and managers. Last night I ordered a roast beef sandwich to take out. I took it home and shared it with my husband. It was unquestionably the worst sandwich either of us had ever experienced. The meat ( we aren't sure it was beef- my husband notice a shred of what looked like fried chicken) was in small ground up lumps, with the main portion of "meat" being in chewed up sheets of some sort of inedible, tough meat by-product. My best guess is that someone had gotten remnants from meat slicer cleaning out of the garbage. We won't be going back This is my first ever negative review on Yelp, or anywhere. read more

The new owner is doing a great job bringing this place back from the disaster of the last guy that had it. Place looks great first of all and is clean as a whistle which is refreshing. It's not going to be your make everyone happy place. The ice cream situation probably isn't the best around but it's still ice cream and they're all the same. Breakfast is the thing to do there for. Besides getting our simple ice cream order wrong, the cone was hollow. There was no ice cream in the cone and it was swirled around the top and actually left a space in the center! We had awesome salads: Chopped Salad, Special salad with candied pecans, cranberries, blue cheese, and beets, and the Balsamico Salad. Homemade dressings were excellent. Aaron our waiter was friendly and our food came very fast. The service was terrific. read more

This latest reincarnation of an Auburn landmark has really become my new breakfast destination. The menu has something for everyone but not cluttered and redundant. The meals were presented attractively and had ample portions of excellent food . They use local sourced products. Prices a little more than the usual diner but food is well worth it. My friends and I had lunch here. Their meals were just oK, neither finished. Me? I had Tuna sandwich and potato salad. Both arrived warm, like they sat out of the fridge for a long time. Foolishly I are them anyway. Pretty bland overall. The stomach gurgles and belching started within 2 hours. From 11 pm on I was a complete mess. Sick. As. A. Dog. Front, rear and in between. the other day i was there and this young girls probably 8 or so walked around the counter stuck her finger in one of the ice cream tubs and licked it! it was clear that her mom worked there because she was wearing a green shutters shirt but still the fact that no one stop her or even noticed her is disgusting. also what makes matters worse is that her mother was right next to her and did nothing. also every time i've eaten any thing from there with the new owner i have had food poisoning. it's is not just the food ( french frys, salads, sandwiches, etc ) it's also the ice cream. i do not recommend this restaurant. read more

My daughter and I have been here a few times since the new management took over and we enjoy it. The food is always excellent and we always leave full. They have a broad selection on the menu as well as things you don't normally find in your run of the mill diners including desserts, which look and taste more like something out of a fancy restaurant. Charming restaurant with inviting outdoor seating. Locals rave about the new management. The menu prices were attractive and considerate, especially with above average portions. There was a rush of customers waiting to be seated when we first got there and room was tight in the restaurant for the hostess to direct us all. I wish they had a dedicated area for this purpose. You can tell she was flustered and out of her comfort but I do commend her for remaining pleasant. I would suggest making a reservation for dinner. After being seated, we realized the host was also our waitress and server. The staff reminds me of that old southern charm. They care for their customers as if they were their own neighbours. The onion rings were probably the best I've had. Each bite was clean with the onion not removing itself from its breading. How did they do that? The hot dog was decent, though I appreciated how it wasn't salty. For $3.99 with fries and a pickle, it's a reasonable deal. I substituted with sweet potato fries and I found them better than Johnny Rockets. I'm also not a big fan of mozzarella sticks but I loved them here. It was light and the cheese had a distinct flavour not common with those experienced in typical fast food joints. Everyone else was thoroughly satisfied with their meal. My dad had a Reuben sandwich and considered it much better than his own. My mom had the fish dinner and she was pleased. My boyfriend had the meatball sub. Initially, the meat wasn't anything special by itself but it was delicious when all the components were put together. Ice cream is the same as Tom Thumb! It's great to have a buzz like this in a place that is often so peaceful. Overall, I give this place a 3.5. Though, it's hard not to give it a 4 as I could see myself coming here often. read more

Well, gave this a try based on all the good reviews. It was a miss in my opinion and I wonder if we were at the same restaurant. Let's be clear, this is a hamburg joint with outdoor seating and an ice cream window. The outdoor seating area is adequate but could use some updating. Our waitress was very friendly and it seemed she was stretched pretty thin, so she gets an A for effort. However, the promised lime for my Corona never appeared. My husband and I ordered a hamburg and cheeseburger with French fries and I opted for sweet potato fries. I ordered medium well and my husband medium rare. Both came well done. The hamburgers were definitely pre-made and not homemade. Our meals seem to have been sitting for awhile as they were bordering on cold. Fries were cold and limp. All in all expect this to be an average hamburg joint and you wouldn't be disappointed. A bit expensive for what you get. read more

There has been major, major improvement since new management has taken over. It is much cleaner, the service is better, and the food is much better. We go there all the time now and love it. The place used to be a pigsty but now it's as clean as a whistle. read more

After years of not going to the Shutters because of poor food quality we went back on 6/4, not busy at all and a beautiful night. We sat outside, two other tables with people and we waited and waited and waited for a waitress. One showed up...only to talk to people that has just gotten out of their car, so we got our own menus and waited some more. A waitress did show up to take an order, from the other table who said they were there 5 minutes before us and we waited ten minutes with no service!!! WE LEFT! I am baffled as to how anyone could rave about the service there-these kids are clueless. We also had a takeout order (working late lunch) from there last week-the person the phone said the cobb salad was huge, more than enough for two people. Yeah right!!! Want a cobb salad? I recently moved back to Auburn, and one of my friends suggested we go out to lunch at the historic Green Shutters. In the past when I was there it really wasn't anything special, but let me tell you when we went and ate there it was a complete 360 change! The place was very clean, new menu with a wide selection of hot sandwiches, salads, entrees, and daily specials. Not to mention their homemade bread and chips! Service was great. While we were there we were informed there are bands every Thursday night in the summer, so we decided we will be back tonight to enjoy some local music. The new owners are doing it right, ive never seen it this busy even in the 60's when I was a kid. I cant wait to go back! read more

I went with a group of friends out to dinner at Green Shutters. We had great food and great service. We all had something different from appetizers to soup, salad and entrees and we were to full to order dessert. Give them a try you'll be glad you did. Unless you have all day to wait do not go to this restaurant. No matter when you go there weekend or weekday the service is terrible you will wait forever. The location is very nice and you'll get an hour and a half to enjoy it waiting for your meal. read more
