Green & Tonic @CoffeeinConnecticut
Caitlin K.

Just one of their multiple locations in Connecticut, the Westport location has been a staple of mine for years. I love grabbing a cup of coffee and walking along the river or to the shops in downtown Westport. They are known for having their own exclusive coffee bean that is super healthy and packed with extra antioxidants, called the 'Supr Brew'. They also do some amazing in house flavor options (including no sugar added) All of their baked goods are made in house including the gluten free options. They also don't use any refined sugar in their kitchen...Truly a great spot for healthy eats and drinks. Their popular 'no-tella iced latte' and the dairy free cold foam options are a must to try! The cookie butter latte (pictured) was delicious. Their locations include: Darien, Westport, Cos Cob, New Canaan (CT) Rye Brook & Chappaqua (NY) & a few more opening up soon Key Features: DF/GF/Vegan options. Quiet spot to work and no line, quick to receive order. They have a great loyalty points system (text/phone sign up) and I have often gotten discounts or free beverages when ordering. They have a large full grab and go section for food items and they have a great smoothie/juice fresh option that has not disappointed.

This chain is a regular stop for me in between meetings for work or appointments. I especially like the protein bites that are like a dessert and the ultimate warrior with B vitamin, protein, and echinacea. The cauliflower soup is good at times, but sometimes the recipe isn't as consistent I've never tried grilled cheese sandwich but I'm curious. The coffee is beyond energizing for someone who doesn't drink a lot of coffee!

What a treat for anyone looking for plant-based and gluten-free options! The OG burger was so tasty. I added avocado. Also loved the immunity tea, which gave me a nice afternoon boost. Banana bread was absolutely delicious. Will be back. Only thing I'd suggest are more sides to go with the burgers for a more complete feeling meal.

I absolutely love coming here! It has been my new go to for lunch. The place is always clean and staff is always friendly and accommodating! As someone who has a gluten free this is a dream! The no-tella muffin is delicious! I also had tried the OG burger and the classic veggie burger. They both are so filling! On another day I grabbed the rainbow bowl in the to go fridge and was amazed how much I got for the price, not to mention how amazing the tofu and dressing tasted! Definitely go check this place out!

OG Veggie Burger

This was an excellent place for lunch! They had a wide variety of healthy gluten free salads, soups, and smoothies. I had the Milky Way smoothie and OG Veggies Burger which was one of the best gluten free buns I have had. I would highly recommend this place!

Had an amazing experience at Green and Tonic in Westport today! Everything at all Green and Tonic locations is plant based and absolutely delicious. I tried the avocado toast, made with fresh avocado and seed bread that is made freshly in house. I also tried a granola bowl with cashew milk and a hot matcha, both were super yummy and comforting. The staff is super knowledgeable and helpful. Ambiance is casual - perfect spot to catch up with a friend or get some work done. Can't wait to go back!

I love that I can get delicious healthy food here. Quick friendly service. Spaced out tables. My daughter loved the Milky Way smoothie, kale salad & spiced lemonade.

Chipotle sweet potato kale salad - healthy with a spicy kick
Ken S.

It's a nice sign of the times that a place full of healthy items and superfoods has replaced a cupcake shop. Customers tipped me off about G&T. Pricey, they said, but good...and healthy. I started with the chipotle sweet potato kale salad, which comes with a lot of great ingredients literally crammed into a small container. It's small, but it packs a punch from the chipotle chiles. The sweet potato is also combined with pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries. It was a nice way to kick off lunch. The Mylky Way smoothie with cacao, almond, milk provided a nice counter balance to the salad's spiciness. The flavors, which also include dates and almond butter and a touch of cinnamon, come together nicely. While it hit the spot while still eating well, I was glad I had the salad. The smoothie alone would not have been enough for lunch. The staff here was friendly and the smoothie was ready quickly. I would have to agree with another reviewer who said she would have like to have seen more reusable dishes and cups used for those who stay and eat. Being conscious of the environment would seem to go hand in hand with eating well. Straws and plastic utensils wrapped in plastic do not. If you have a whole food/super food itch, Green & Tonic would be a great place to scratch it.

This is the kind of food I make for myself at home, so I'm thrilled to find a place on the road like this. Great variety and delicious options. Two stars off though because they don't provide "for here" dishes and utensils. Their mission of "nourishing a wellness community" is misguided if not taking the environment and sustainable choices into account. Yes, it is great some of their packages are compostable, but they're still *single* use. I love that wellness is creeping into mainstream culture but the abundance of single use makes me sad and the disconnect between healthy eating and a healthy environment is saddening. I kid you not- as I was leaving, looking for a compost bucket for my compostable dish, a lady grabbed a plastic wrap fork and another stuck to it and fell into the recycling bin (no compost here!). The lady just pretended nothing happened! Leave it to Westport to care about their looks over practicality and impact on the environment.

This is a Large? The Small must come in a shot glass.

Bloodroot is an amazing woman owned restaurant that is almost 48 years young…read more Nestled on the edge of the Brewster Cove, the views have always been my favorite part of our visit. We have been lucky enough to have been coming for over 40 years. Earlier this year, one of the founding owners passed away. Sadly, the restaurant is closing in December 2025. Despite yourself a favor and make a reservation now. You will have to wait in line to order, but you will be guaranteed a seat. Come prepared to do your part. Starting with picking up your meal and then by clearing your table when you are through. While dining, be sure to peek at the great collection of vintage pictures that cover the walls. There is so much history in this building. On this visit Mom and I ate well, as always and we left full. I had an amazing Bloodroot (vegetarian) burger and mom tried the "chicken" sandwich. Both came with salads, a pickle and kettle chips. We had an amazing last meal and shared a lot of sweet memories. If only they were closer, we would be here everyday.

Founded in 1977, Bloodroot is nearing its 50th anniversary. It also will be commemorating its…read morelegacy. For this historic restaurant that has created its own recipes both for its menu planning and for its business plan, 50 years is an enviable achievement that marks a milestone. Bloodroot began stirring feminism into food during an era when feminist cafés and bookstores sprang up all across North America. Bloodroot has outlasted them all. And through its four vegetarian cookbooks, Bloodroot has contributed to both the feminist and the vegetarian movements beyond Connecticut's borders. The restaurant has defied convention in many ways, even in its location on a dead-end street of a peaceful residential neighborhood. Its secluded site provides a spacious yard, ample parking, and a waterfront view. Picnic tables in the yard and patio foretell of informal and leisurely dining. Indoors, this historic landmark looks like a museum. The olden furniture may have been sourced from antique shops. Tapestries hang from the rafters. Chandeliers simulate candlelight. An entire wall is decorated with dozens of framed black-and-white vintage photos of females, all looking like the faded portraits of your great-grandmas. Bloodroot is all about Mom. The food, "like mother used to make," is akin to grandma's and mom's home cooking. Not haute cuisine, but not crunchy-granola health foods either. To my disappointment, white flour, white sugar, and white rice rule the day. The mostly conventional fare with an ethnic flair simply omits the meat. Until ten years ago, Bloodroot was stuck in the last century, still clinging to cow's milk products on its menu, thereby supporting a dairy industry that cruelly exploits the females of the species. This feminist collective's transition into veganism was long overdue. I have dined at Bloodroot over thirty times in the past 40-years, during which the building and décor have little changed. Historic indeed. Its menu, however, changes both seasonally and almost daily depending upon what produce is available. On some occasions, I have been treated to memorable meals that rival even the most expensive vegan restaurants of Manhattan. But sometimes the food did not rise above the level of my own home cooking, so I was better off staying home. You just need to choose wisely. One change in décor has occurred in its adjoining bookstore. In the age of Amazon, it has morphed into more of a reading library with comfy couches that encourage you to browse through the books. On one table and one shelf, some used books, mostly pertaining to the subjects of feminism or vegetarianism, can indeed be purchased, but that selection is small compared to the other shelves crowded with books intended only for perusal. While the three earlier Bloodroot cookbooks are out of print, its current volume is in print and so offered for sale. Another change. In the past, you were usually greeted by Selma Miriam, who cofounded Bloodroot with her business and life partner, Noel Furie. But Selma won't be greeting us anymore. She died last February at age 89. Tributes and obits filled Connecticut news media, and she was accorded a lengthy obituary in The New York Times. I would be remiss if not sharing an ill-fated personal anecdote. Under the guise of required membership to some obscure historical society, this feminist collective used to reserve one night a week for admission to women only. On one such members-only night in 1988, a luminary of the animal rights movement and I had arrived right after broadcasting his animal rights talk show on WPKN-FM on which we announced we were heading to Bloodroot right after the show, essentially promoting the restaurant on the noncommercial radio station. Selma knew us both, but cordially turned us away. Despite our begging, she refused to serve us even outside and out of sight. I felt like a Black in Jim Crow South denied a seat at the lunch counter. While I don't recall the woman after whom the historical society was named, it should have been called, The Jim Crow Historical Society. Presently filling roles both at the front and the back of the house, Noel (in my photo, depicted standing) is one busy woman. And Bloodroot is beginning a new chapter in its CookBook of Life. In case you're wondering about the meaning of its sanguinary name that may seem contradictory for a vegetarian restaurant, the bloodroot is a wildflower native to New England whose roots sprout up all around it with flowering shoots. But this iconic Bloodroot in Bridgeport stands alone.

My server True, was very nice and she took very good care of me. When you sit down, they give you their regular menu, but then, they also bring a chalkboard of their specials, right to your table. I decided to go with the pasta marinara with the Un-meatballs. To drink, I ordered a ginger ale. That "ginger ale" was a full on ginger beer. It definitely had the ginger "kick" to it, it was very, very good. My food comes, and it is a huge portion. It came with a nice sized side salad, the lettuce was beautifully, crisp, and I'm not sure what the dressing was, but it was delicious, and it, was dressed just right. Not over, not under. It also came with a garlic bread with a "vegan butter" very well done. The main course, was also very very good. The pasta was perfectly Al dente, and the marinara was very good. It had a rich flavor. The Un-meatballs, I could tell that the texture was a little bit different, but they were 100% delicious. Seasoned oh so very well. If I didn't know, I might have thought they were the "real thing" . The only reason I'm taking away a half a star, was the meatballs were just a little bit cool in the middle. Not enough that they took away from the flavor, but enough that I did notice it. Not worth sending back. Maybe they should double check the meatballs with a thermometer. I took some of my pasta in a to go container, and was about to get my check, but then True asked me if I wanted dessert. The "Apple crumble à la mode" caught my eye. I asked her what they used for the "ice cream" and she said it was a cashew based dessert. Curiosity piqued, I decided to go for it. Wow! A total Home run. The apples were not over sweet, and just had a tiny bit of a " bite" to them. Just right. There was a granola topping, and that "ice cream?" it had a softer consistency, but other than that, it tasted just like the real thing. I would gladly plop down in front of my TV with a giant bowl of that stuff. I jokingly asked True, "are you sure you didn't slip me a scoop of the real stuff?" it was that good... The Price for everything was a bit on the high end, but for the quantity and quality, very reasonable. I will come back. Thank you.

We take out seat in the very cool back room, and only after 5 or so minutes the drink and food arrives. Now I am a complete foodie, really tough on everything I eat, but after one bite I was in love. To the point where I asked Lauren, the owner, what mustard they were using, and then ordered a panini press when I got home hoping to recreate the magic. Perfectly chewy bread, just the right balance of sweet and savory, and that mustard. Truly amazing. My wife ordered the avocado toast which she said was perfection. The atmosphere that they created was very tranquil and serene even though the tables were a little bit too close to each other. The chairs were too heavy for my liking. My favorite dishes were all at the beginning where I really liked the Five flavor Plate (my favorite taste was the bittermelon one). The cauliflower mushroom dish was also really unique but my favorite dish of the night was Buddha jumps over the wall. The dry ice presentation was stunning. There were eight types of braised mushrooms, and texturally, the dish was just so interesting and umami. This was the pinnacle and highlight for me. It kind of tasted like a Chinese cream of mushroom soup haha. If you like mushrooms and soy, you would really like this tasting menu. There were times I felt some dishes were a little bit too salty (roasted matsutake), but as far as tasting menus go, it wasn't bad overall. While the presentation of the dessert was nice, it was really impractical to eat and a little bit difficult. I also wish there was more of dessert that's a bit more than two bites haha.
