My husband and I decided to try this Greek restaurant. The kitchen was very understaffed so the wait was very long. We ordered hummus and pita as an appetizer. After almost a 10 minute wait, I approached the counter to ask for our appetizer. After being told they were busy, I continued to wait. The hummus was very bland and runny. The amount of hummus received (about 1 cup) exceeded the amount of pita bread served (6 slices). Our meal came with side Greek salads. I was very disappointed. My salad looked very tasty but it was drenched in vinaigrette dressing. So much that every piece of lettuce and vegetable dripped when I tried to bite it. I ended up leaving most of it. What saved this restaurant from getting 2 stars was the rotisserie chicken. It was very savory and so was the rice. The portion was big and I had to get a to go box. Overall, unfortunately I don't see myself returning to this establishment. read more

Their food is good, this place for myself is a hidden gem. I only assume this because the corner it resides isn't heavily trafficked, but I should take that as a good thing. Their food is decent but i don't think they practice food safety and regulations in my opinion. I ordered shrimp and fries over the phone and as I got there, there was a customer in front of me paying with cash. When it was my turn to pick up the food, the lady was putting the food away into a togo container and with the same hand she just handled cash with grabbed some packets of ketchup and put it right on top of the fries and shrimp and then closed the container *This was during covid. I moved into the Casa de Oro area in 1995 and have been going to the Grecian Cafe ever since. It has been updated in the past couple years and is adequate for eating in...but the business really seems more oriented towards take-out and that's what we do. I think that's why it might be frustrating for people who eat in, since they are in the queue behind previous take-out orders... My favorites are the Greek Chicken Salad & the Gyros salad ... best to get them with dressing on the side because you might have leftovers and they will last well into the next day without the dressing. First, the only thing I buy here is the Greek chicken salad, to go. Over time I come here less and less because of what I see are obvious health code violations. Typically there are one or two women working the kitchen. They handle food and then money at the cash register without washing their hands or using gloves. This is a serious problem when you are handling raw chicken, then grabbing pita bread, then taking cash at the counter and then returning to food prep. It is so painful to watch I rarely go anymore. In fact if I see the practice has not changed, I will never return. They also are lagging in the cleaning up of tables. At lunch and dinner time they will leave tables covered with glasses and plates of customers who are long gone. And they are taking longer to prepare take-out orders. They say "20 minutes" and then you get there and have to wait another 15 minutes. And that's how I began noticing the sanitary problems. While waiting for my late take out order, I get to witness the no gloves, cash handing food prepares. read more

Good, good stuff, especially when I was craving Greek food. When I went to my friend's place for dinner, I think Greek was the furthest from my mind. This place is good, though. I had Combo #1, which was a gyro, fries, and a drink. Simple. The gyro had good meat, though a little too much yogurt pooling at the bottom of it. Fries were hot and had no salt! That's great in my book. The location of the place is isolated and out of the way. My friend drove right past it as we went across some places I had eaten at before, from the Cafe del Oro to Sarita's Mexican. The other demerit is the very long wait time for the food. I was engaged in conversation with my friend but there were times when I was looking around, wondering where the food was. Also, it skews towards older clientele, which isn't necessarily bad. I had their gyro sandwich today, it's was good, it's as good as any other gyro sandwich I've eaten. Unfortunately the two women that run the place have zero personality, they're unfriendly, won't smile and look like they're pissed off at the world. I guess this is their normal attitude as I talked to someone else that's been there and they told me that they noticed the same thing. Tried for 1st time yesterday & picked up our order. Order was ready on time & correctly. Problems: 1) Meat on the gyros plate & sandwich was dry. 2) Appetizer Fire Feta was also dry spiced feta. I called because when we ordered a platter... where we have been customers for a few years... this last Monday we got VERY LITTLE FOOD! Mark would not realize that we have been supporting his family business, small business... all he could say is "i am the manager!" That does not fix my lack of food on Monday the 11th of April. Then to find out HE was the one who served our food, such little food it did not even cover their platter fees. He suggested maybe I eat a lot? I really enjoy the food. They are a Mom and Pop restaraunt so do not go in looking to get your food and go. It does take a little bit of time. With that said..it's worth the wait! The food is fresh and the service is usually quite good. Like I said...slooww..yet DELICIOUS! The salad is HUGE! Plan to share or have more than one meal. The food here is AMAZING, and it's just the start! Everything tastes fresh and flavorful (although I do add more garlic and Seasonings to the hummus, to how my family likes it) but even our picky toddler (and I) love everything. Well, more like she's obsessed. We never feel too full/bloated/gross like from other takeout places. The family is extremely friendly and even gives my daughter little snacks when we come in. They are always very thankful and polite, there's plenty of leftovers for the next day (which means saving money) and they have cold beverages if you choose to eat in or while waiting for your order. The tables are beautiful, always clean, never too busy, and they have light music playing. There is also a couple tables outside, under the building overhang. The only reason I'm glad we don't live closer, is I know my wallet would hurt (even though they are very reasonably priced) Otherwise, we come here almost every time we are in the area! read more

This place has been in business for as long as I could remember and has a very warm ambiance, the elderly owners are very kind and the food is always fresh, yes you wait for it but right when you order you always hear your food hit the grill right away which ensures me that I'm getting fresh food! I've been coming here with my family for years and the prices to me have always remained the same, you could easily feed each person for around $8-12. I love Greek food and have eaten at probably most geek restaurants in the city. The Grecian Cafe is the best place in San diego period. The place is inexpensive and absolutely delicious. Anyone giving this place one star has to be competing restaurants. The reviews about being short staffed are honest but is worth the wait. I call ahead to avoid this problem. I wanted some great Greek food so I ordered a meal from the Grecian Cafe over the phone and went to pick it up about 15 minutes later. I arrived and watched as the chef cooking the food was wearing her mask around her neck. I was horrified. We are in the middle of a Pandemic and I feel that the chef should be wearing a mask covering her mouth and nose. Requiring your employees (or the owner) to wear a mask while preparing your meal is basic public health requirements. The CDC requires all restaurants to have their employees wear a mask while working. I was so upset and yelled at the owner and his response was she was "having a hard time breathing" and was "taking a break". If that was the case then she should have left the kitchen and gone outside for a break. I left in disgust and didn't take my food. I want to support local businesses and help the little guy however if the little guy can't do the right thing then they deserve to go out of business. Public health is no joke and spreading Covid19 is a serious issue. The owner said "no cases have been linked to us". How the hell does he know that? Don't eat here and don't support those that are so cavalier about your health. read more

Middle of the road place. Ordered the mahi mahi plate ($11.99) and the half chicken plate ($10.99). It came with salad, rice and tzatziki sauce on both dishes. The fish was of an average quality and bland. Also it was a small portion maybe 3 -4 ounces. The rice was cold, the salad was ordinary at best. The half chicken was re-cooked and was extremely dry. Overall certainly not the best greek food I have ever eaten. I may come back for the souvlaki as that is cooked to order unlike the half chicken. read more
