First visit--and officially obsessed. Tried Greater Grinders for the first time after hearing rave reviews from my coworkers, and let me just say... they did not disappoint! I ordered the meatball grinder with provolone, and it might be the best grinder I've had since moving to Virginia--hands down. The bread was absolutely top tier--toasted perfectly with the ideal mix of crunch and softness. The meatballs were flavorful, the provolone was melted just right, and everything held together beautifully. The only note I'd give is the sauce--it was a little heavy for my taste. Next time, I'll ask for light sauce, and I know it'll be perfect. My coworkers all ordered salads, and WOW--they're massive. Fresh, crisp, and definitely worth trying on my next visit. Presentation was on point, and everyone was raving about theirs. Overall, this place is definitely going on my repeat list. Quick service, generous portions, and flavors that hit. I've tasted this sub before when I was in high school some moons ago, but I was in the area and wanted to see if it was still delicious as I remembered from 20 years ago. It was. The service was excellent- the man ringing my food up was hilarious and very helpful with my additions to my grinder. I went during the lunch rush on a Friday, and it was quick with how they do things (someone ringing up the orders, someone preparing the subs, someone doing cleanup, etc...). I brought it home to share with my girlfriend, and it was delicious. I will absolutely go again, probably on a monthly basis. :) I was impressed! read more

This place reminds me of my childhood when life was so much less complicated and stressful. Greater Grinders Subs, is practically an institution in our local community. They've been in business for over 40 years and they are not slowing down one bit. This place just smells like an old school Sub Shop, immediately after walking through the door that magical scent hits you and you're transported back in time. A look around at some of the old memorabilia adorning the walls will remove any doubt that you are in a special place. I'm a simple man and I enjoy simple pleasures. The Special Grinder is my favorite item on the menu. It's piled high with tender beef, onions and peppers, all wrapped in a beautiful sub roll and packed tightly with their signature wrapping paper. Well we tried it because of the pastrami sandwich option. I'm still looking for a good pastrami in the area. The servers are awesome really nice and know the menu. You can't go wrong with anything you order from this spot! Not only is the food amazing, Jimmy and his crew treat you like family. A warm and welcoming place. The meat on their subs has gotten skimpier despite price increases lately. The meatball sub I've enjoyed for years, now has 3 meatballs cut in half to fill the whole sub roll. The grinder, also another favorite, has the meat rolled up to appear thicker than it actually is. This is disappointing change to our neighborhood sub shop. As a child I lived in Norfolk and this place here is a great part of some of my childhood memories....and any time I am in Norfolk i feel the need to stop by for a quick bite to eat... ..now I could not tell you if the owner is the same of if this place has stayed in the family... but what I can say is this place has been consistent with quality and service.....when in town I have the Greater Grinder or the Super Greater Grinder . ..and that's what I recommend you try...the only difference is the super has add cheese and pepperoni...... We stopped here as it was close to the business we had to come to town for. The staff was phenomenal; personal and friendly. They went out of their way to get my family the best deal they could and their sandwiches were delicious. My middle son told them they should raise their prices that's how good they were. Ran out to get some lunch and saw this place hidden off the main road. The folks behind the counter were pleasant and courteous but not overly so. A very simple menu of submarine sandwiches that are all able to be customized. The produce looked fresh and prepared on site. I watched one of the employees slicing the meats on site as well. When I got my sub it was huge. I took one bite and was instantly greeted with warm melt in my mouth delicious goodness. This place is the top of the game for submarine sandwiches. After coming home from a 7 month deployment the first meal my brother wanted when he got back to Norfolk was a grinder from Greater Grinder Submarines. We arrived at about 2:00pm on a Friday and it was pretty quiet, until we walked in with a party of 11. Although there were a lot of us they were quick to take all of our orders and make the subs. WOW! tip call ahead they get busy!! Located right outside the Industrial park in Norfolk this little GEM has stand out food! The aroma of oil and vinegar hit's you in the parking lot the steady traffic of workers coming for lunch or take out tell you this place is good before you order! For me a Grinder all the way, toasted perfectly and just the right amount of Oil and Vinegar to make it taste right but not soak the bread down! Absolutely my favorite sub shop. The ladies behind the counter are so fast and friendly! I place pick up orders every week. My two favorites are the tuna,which doesn't have a lot of celery or onions in it(I hate crunchy things l in my tuna), and the meatball. When they were done we realized the sandwich was actually hot! So this isn't like your typical sandwich place... They take the time to cook these babies so that the tomatoes are juicy and the cheese all melted. It was worth the wait, seriously delicious and 100 times better than Subway.
