It feels like the kind of place that has something for everybody--drinks, food, darts, a little arcade area, and that friendly local-bar vibe where you could easily hang out for a few hours. I only stopped in on a Tuesday to use the ATM, so I haven't had a chance to try the food or drinks yet, but just based on the atmosphere, I'm actually excited to come back and give the place a proper visit. My only complaint was the smell. There was definitely an odd sewage/urine-type smell in parts of the place, and after seeing other reviews mention it, I understand what people are talking about. It wasn't enough to make me dislike the place, but it was noticeable. Without that issue, just based on my first impression, I probably would have given it five stars instead of four. Overall, really cool neighborhood-bar atmosphere and definitely a place I want to come back to. I'll update my review once I've actually had the food and drinks.

I got a side salad and a southwest wrap. The side salad was huge and has so many toppings with a really good creamy balsamic dressing. The wrap was phenomenal. It had a honey chipotle aioli that was creamy with a little kick to it. It was unlike anything I've tasted before and elevated a simple wrap. Not to mention the inside was wrapped in melted cheese. Overall this place can be busy and have slower service but this time we had no issues. The food is high quality and tastes above average. It is also in downtown Mt. The salads are huge, but they are very onion forward, so just a heads up if onions aren't your thing. Shrimp comes piled on top of some dishes and you can add or remove it. Also worth noting, nothing is overly spicy, just solid flavor that doesn't knock you out. Service: The staff is genuinely kind and super accommodating. You can tell it's family owned. Everyone seems to care and wants you to enjoy your meal. Ambiance: The space is cute and Creole themed. It's cozy, casual. Easy 5 stars for me, this place is a gem and I'll keep coming back for sure.

The…read moreinterior has been remodeled and looks great, love the dark layout and the huge dining room, however the food remains touch and go. Certain dishes are great, others not. Got a huge bread basket that looked empty, when peering in, two small pieces of stale french bread smothered in Saran wrap were visible. Shame all that wasted space. C'mon Gumbo. Don't skimp on the bread. Serve it fresh too! During past dining experiences, the fried shrimp and hushpuppies were much larger. During this visit they were midget sized, like they were "cooking to a price point". That said, Gumbo's always excelled at frying and they tasted great. The fried catfish was dredged in cornmeal and flour. It tasted as good as catfish can taste, considering slimy-stank taste is natural to a bottom feeder and next to impossible to cook out. If you like catfish, gather up a chair, you're in the right place. The gumbo was watery with small dices of sausage and more midget shrimp. The broth had little taste. Mediocre gumbo is a misdemeanor violation. I wrote Gumbo's a ticket on that one. The cajun pasta was very good. In the old days they used bowtie pasta in a thick creamy sauce smacked with Cajun decadence and big ole' shrimps. Today they used penne (not a big deal, but it cheapens the dish) in a disappointly watery sauce with a few midget shrimp. It still tasted good but it quite clear at this point Gumbo's was cooking to a price point. The STAR OF THE SHOW was the shrimp crawfish etouffee. Wow! Thick, creamy, rich gravy with a heavenly base of toasted roux having notes of roasted peanut. They got that one right, midget shrimps and all. I want another bowl NOW! DIATRIBE ALERT: Service wasn't terrible but far from exceptional. The new generation of wait staff expects big tips for mediocre service, like we should should be honored by their presence. I always tip large despite my general grumpiness. Problem is, tipping culture has gotten out of hand. It's become a bottomless pit of greed. Front and back staff with their hands out perpetually. Cash registers programmed to induce tip guilt. Dirty looks for not tipping a carry-out order. CARRY-OUT RULES: If I don't sit down to eat, I ain't tipping your ass. Go back to Nursing School or something like that. Why should the customer pick up the slack for an industry refusing to pay employees a decent wage? SUMMARY: Love the vibe. Like the food. Gumbo's was clearly cooking to a price point. Midget shrimp? Sacriledge. New Orleans ain't like that.

It wasn't busy, but it was still nice to get our order taken quickly after we sat down. The beer prices are reasonable, particularly on tap. But, my wife's Moscow Mule seemed a bit weak, and it cost more than the beer. The food arrived quickly, too, and everything was hot off the grill. My wife and I both got the salmon sliders. Each sandwich has a generous chunk of perfectly cooked salmon. I ordered the tater tots, which were amazingly crispy and flavorful. My wife got the same thing, with french fries. The fries are good, but I like the tots better. My daughter's mac & cheese was super cheesy and buttery, and just needed a little salt to make it perfect. My son got a burger with a fried egg on it, and he said it was nice and beefy. Prices were reasonable, too. And, there are big screen TVs wherever you look. I can see this becoming a regular stop for good food and drinks.

It took 20ish minutes to get drinks and refills. I had asked for a water several times and we had to end up sharing. We got chicken tenders, poutine and pierogi for appetizers. The poutine and chicken tenders were both amazing! The chicken was fresh and very good quality, it seemed to be hand breaded. The poutine had great flavor also! The pierogi was dry and not great, so I would skip those next time. For dinner I ordered the mac and cheese and French onion soup. The French onion soup was so salty it was inedible. The Mac and cheese was also disappointing. I thought it would be baked or have a sauce and it didn't. It reminded me more of a kids meal (but with adult prices) and was a small portion. Husband got the fish and chips and he enjoyed them, but said he wished they gave malt vinegar with them. Overall the service was slow and some dishes were great and some were not so great.

The swordfish was out of this world- tender, succulent, & well spiced. Even the saffron rice it was served upon was lovely. Hubby enjoyed the cracker crusted app pizza, as well. The wagyu burger was quite possibly the best burger I have ever enjoyed. Even the gluten free bun was, (dare I say), a stand out. Hubby's wagyu was served on a "normal" bun which he said was outstanding as well. It is called a Grown up Happy Meal. Finally, the truffle fries were prepared in what appeared to be in the classical, French way, that is, like pomme frites. The only down side to these fries was that I may not ever be able to go back to normal fries. Yes, that good. And served with aioli- my favorite. This dining experience was fantastic. Great friendly guests, too!

I feel a similar sense of guilt about how I've treated this restaurant. I've been here since Covid, but I should've updated my review. While I didn't like how they handled the pandemic (Faye acted like there was no pandemic), the food has always been amazing. And, it still is. I'm not happy that they don't have sandwiches anymore, unless you count hamburgers. But, I understand businesses need to simplify to stay profitable. I don't think lack of sandwiches is going to be a problem if they keep making the burgers this good. The beefiness is profound, and it shows that they are using fresh, high-quality meat. The mushroom and Swiss burger has a stack of sautéed mushrooms and a generous amount of Swiss. I really appreciate the waitress asking me first if I wanted mayo on it... mayo would've taken away from the robust flavors. I actually kept going "mm-mm" after each bite. And, look at the ridiculous amount of fries in my picture. These are seriously good fries. I do want to order the fish and chips next time. My daughter got them, and I'm glad she was willing to share. The whitefish has a sweetness you only get from fresh fish. And, the breading is crispy, and not the least bit greasy. My wife said she wasn't hungry (though she did have a bite of everything we ordered), so she ordered the cream of broccoli soup. It was wonderfully flavorful. As with everything else we ordered today, we would be happy to order it again. The service was excellent, and I don't mind the no-frills setting. There's no way you'd expect an old school bar to have food this good. Coming here during happy hour also helped. A strong Moscow Mule cost $10, and my 22 ounce Guinness only cost $8. Sorry, Your Mothers. I definitely won't neglect you for so long next time.

You could also order the table side prepared Caesar Salad which both of our friends did order. Just watching the preparation of the salads was amazing. Our friends have been here many times so they knew how good they were. My wife and I each enjoyed the French Onion soup which was very full flavored unlike watery versions many restaurants serve. All of our prime rib dinners were outstanding. Horseradish added to the enjoyment of this perfectly prepared dish. I had heard that this restaurant had recent new owners. I did not verify this however. Service was as good as the food. Not only was our server (Mary) excellent but anyone walking the floor was quick to take away used plates and refill drinks. Inside is dark, moody, with lots of brick and dark woods as you would expect for the era in which the building was constructed. I sat at the bar since I dined alone, where there were plenty of open barstools. They start you off with complementary bread service which is a mix of dinner rolls as well as small and large crunchy bread sticks. I just stuck to the rolls which are fairly standard dinner rolls. They bring a bowl of butter in packets; however, they did not give me a plate to eat my bread....just a napkin layed across the bartop which was strange. I later saw other bartop patrons being served a small plate for their rolls, so apparently they just forgot mine. For drinks, they do have all the usual drinks, beer, wine and cocktails. I just stuck with an iced tea which was refilled several times during my visit. I didn't want to go crazy with ordering so I just stuck to the prime rib, a side of their special baked potato, a french onion soup and an iced tea. Their actual steaks start at around $45, as of August 2026. French onion soup - pretty standard. This is a small portion/cup. Some restaurants cup sizes are larger than others. I did like it though. Prime rib - this is a healthy 16oz slice. Cooked to perfection. They asked how I wanted it....they gave me a perfect slice. The one interesting thing is they give you 2 different horseradishes here, regular and whipped. I preferred the whipped. I ate most of it, leaving only a couple of ounces at the end. The entire time I felt like this was maybe closer to 22 or 24 ounces. Twice baked potato - really tasty as they typically are. I was only able to eat half of it though. Service was very attentive even though the bartender was training a new employee the entire time.
