I was a little curious when I noticed that Ace Hardware was moving into the strip center at 62nd and Allisonville Road. Taking the spot vacated by CVS and expanding beyond it, it seemed an unusual move considering the relative proximity of Sullivan's, Lowe's, and Hedlund's all over near 62nd and Keystone. That said, the neighborhoods are entirely different and this neighborhood really hasn't had anything resembling a hardware store. There was a place open for a bit near 75th and Binford, however, this neighborhood has really sort of struggled to attract new businesses. Other than a Big Lots across the street and the always popular Taylor's Bakery, this corner has been a bit run down and neglected for as long as I've lived in the area. Recently, this particular corner is showing signs of life with both strip centers being renovated and now the arrival of Ace Hardware. Great Lakes Ace is a Michigan-based company with 62 locations. The location has been cleaned up mightily and the accessibility definitely improved with a better ramp and automatic doors. The store itself is surprisingly accessible for a hardware store (a weakness of Sullivan's). Ace prides itself on offering expert advice on a variety of home repair and maintenance projects with convenient shopping to get in and out quickly and national buying power for access to name brands. It looks like they typically schedule in 1/2 day or full-day options. The craftsmen are actual Ace employees - not contractors. The Ace that I found was well staffed and super friendly and helpful. I was basically "just looking" at this visit, however, I felt free to do so without a lot of pressure. Some of the key services at this location: Propane Refill/Exchange Blades/Knives/Scissors/Saws Sharpening Screen Repair Hunting/Fishing Licenses Auto Key Programming and Cutting Glass Repair and Cutting Assembly and more. This location carries hand and power tools, paint, sundries, clothing, plumbing, hardware, outdoor, cleaning supplies, electrical, lawn and garden, and housewares. Brands they carry include Traeger, Weber, STIHL, Scotts, Toro, Benjamin Moore, YETI, Magnolia Home Paint, Craftsman, Dewalt, and a few others. I suppose 5-star might be a little generous for a hardware store, however, I really liked the improved atmosphere of this store from the dingy, worn out feeling in the old CVS. This location is clean, well organized, surprisingly affordable, and has employees who were friendly and helpful. Plus, accessibility is improved quite a bit from the old tenant. Stopped by here looking for a specific light fixture that they unfortunately did not carry. We were greeted with a very nice welcome asking what we were looking for and the associate walked us to the aisle where the item might have been. He stayed there helping us try and find the items and answered all of our questions. When we left two more associates were at the front and said goodbye. Loved the help and looked like a good amount of items in the store. read more

I went to Great lakes Ace hardware to pick up a part for my Weber grill but was pleasantly surprised!!! The store is very bright very well organized and there are so many people there to help you and provide you advice and make sure you get the right product for what your project needs. I so wish I could give more stars but when I see register associates who are unable to find answers to questions & problems, I am concerned. Both myself and the customer in front of me had and issue with items not ringing up properly. The poor kids at the register tried to call on the walkie the manager but he never answered and they wouldn't (couldn't?) go look for him. Came in to get a spare key made for my chip-less KIA. Left without a key. First had to wait at the Information Hub for a few minutes until an older gentleman in an Ace vest passed. He said "Can I help you?" I said, "I need a copy of my key." He then seemed flustered and said "Well I have to go help them first." I wasn't even sure who them is or what he meant since I'd been at the info desk for several minutes and there was no one around. But I guess he meant someone up front ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ He eventually came back several more minutes later. I handed him my key and he made a big todo of huffing and mumbling "I don't know if we even have that type of key". Finally he tried, made a visibly botched job of it, and asked if I wanted to go try it. I did and, of course, it didn't work. I brought the key back in and he didn't charge me. So that earns back a star. And he was civil enough. But I definitely won't be back. Not when there's other, friendlier hardware stores in the general neighborhood. read more

The staff who work here are perhaps the friendliest and most helpful staff I have encountered in any store or shop in Indianapolis. They greet customers immediately and ask if they can help you find anything. Then they take you directly to the aisle or aisles where the merchandise you asked for is located. One of the staff who placed a special order for me even followed up with a phone call to be sure the item is what I wanted. read more

Brian is condescending and rude. Ace double charged our card which wouldn't have been a big deal had they just reversed it. Instead we had to take time off work to drive their and show them the receipt even thought the two charges happened within 2 minutes for the exact same amount. As a business owner I have dealt with things like this and have immediately made it right. Instead Brian called as at home and spoke to us like we were 4 and doing something wrong. The cashier at the time of purchase told us they were having computer issues. We have waited 3 weeks for a refund of our $236... and been spoken to in a way that is completely unacceptable. He also told us we should have gone to Lowe's. No worries. We will from now on. read more
