Hedlund's Hardware has to be one of Indy's weirdest little gems. Located in practically the perfect spot on the corner of 62nd and Keystone with a Broad Ripple Avenue address, Hedlund's Hardware looks and feels like a blast from the past precisely because it really is a blast from the past. Established in 1935 by Claude and Mary Hedlund, Hedlund's was at first a General Store but now limits itself to a somewhat broad definition of hardware and a personality that practically defies explanation. I avoided Hedlund's for quite some time. I'm a wheelchair user and Hedlund's Hardware is one of those places that practically screams out "You're going to break me!" as I delicately wheel myself through the aisles (or the ones that are passable, a fact that will change from visit to visit). The truth is that some people will hate a place like Hedlund's. It's a chaotic, eclectic, and seemingly disorganized (It's actually fairly well organized) establishment in a world where we want big box convenience and 19-year-old Tommy pretending he knows everything there is to know about plumbing or house repairs. HINT: Tommy doesn't know. At Hedlund's, though, they do actually know stuff. Hedlund's is not a big box store. In fact, it's not even a particularly big store though it's much bigger than it appears from the outside. Hedlund's is not a Sullivan's Hardware, a nearby behemoth that is also local but is much bigger and more contemporary. Hedlund's is, at least in my view, a bit of a cultural icon. It remains in the Hedlund family and is locally owned. I have no idea if this is the original building, but it's definitely symbolic of the history of the area. As I noted, if you need true accessibility it's not likely to be found here. You can get in the doors (most days) as they're level to the ground. That said, Hedlund's packs stuff in here and aisle passage is hit-and-miss. However, folks are friendly, helpful, and actually knowledgeable here and it's worth it to at least visit the place even if you don't completely fall in love with it. It's a unique space, a unique hardware store, and sort of an outcast right between Lowe's and Sullivan's on Keystone yet it continues to be a beacon of sorts and I'm sure glad it's here. read more

Ok so I admit, I am a DIYer. If I think I can, I do. My latest project was to secure dining chairs that somehow lost some screws and washers. I have yet to figure how how on the world did long screws come out the undersides of the chairs. These are the same type of screws you find in some office chairs and I find at least one of those go AWOL too. I visited the big box store across the street with what I needed in hand. Not only could I not find what I needed but I could not find any employees to help me either. In frustration I remembered Hedlund Hardware was across the street. Whew! Chair saving to the rescue. I go here when I get frustrated with the blue and white logo store or the orange and white logo store. And I go here when I need odd things like the tea kettle that lost the piece that secures it and the manufacturer seemed totally lost on how to send me a replacement piece. Guess who came up with something I could use as a workaround? Yep you guessed correctly if you answered Hedlund Hardware. Now the store layout and storage of items reminds me of an organized artistic creation but this is not an issue because you don't have to search for anything because the employees will find it for you! No need to search, hunt for anything. Simply bring in what you need or describe it really well and bam they know what need and if they got it like magic they bring it up front quickly. They are somehow a part of Ace Hardware so they come up on Ace Hardware's website as a location. I also seen them search the computer (yes they have a computer) for a Camp Chef grill to see if they could get it for me. They do carry Stihl trimmers and some parts. If I remember correctly, a son and cousin now run the store but do not hold me to that fact because my SO was telling me about them in search of something they could not be found elsewhere. They have almost everything I've needed from electrical and hand tools to high quality polishes, cleaning tools and supplies and safer lawn and garden treatments. They are very helpful and patient. I highly recommend Hedlunds. read more

I will probably never step foot into this disaster again. The store is cramped, the people who work there are pretty unfriendly, and you can't really navigate the place over the piles of stock just lying about the middle of the aisles. You can't really find anything, and unless they do a complete renovation or start handing out maps at the door, you never will. Did I mention they just leave merchandise laying in the middle of the floor? There are people there...if you can find them, to ask where something is, but the best you can hope for is they will offer some vague direction to some area of the store where you'll be left to fend for yourself perilously lost...foraging for the door so you can hop back on Keystone and jet over to Lowe's or up to Sullivan's. I guess the upshot to this place is that you can find the best grills money can buy here (Weber and Holland). But there is still a bunch of stuff scattered about the floor. read more

Hedlund's.... Meh. Its just a hardware store but I expected more. That's just me. I digress. Hedlund's was what you'd expect. More of an at your service feeling as opposed to going to other hardware stores I've visited-which was nice. We came for fabulous patio chairs. The salesperson knew exactly what we needed. He directed us to go to the register to pay, while a coworker went to grab our chairs. We didn't prepare for the chairs not to fit in our . I was sad when they didn't fit. The salesperson left it up to us to figure it out. The only advice he gave was: They may not fit good luck, and left. Took us 12 minutes to figure it out, but we got them in. I am so happy w the chairs. They sit low but are hidden by the bush outside our patio. They are very comfortable and cute. Pink Patio Chairs to match my flamingo aesthetic. I did some other patio pieces that may warrant a trip back to Hedlund's. read more

If you're a Harry Potter fan, you will know what I mean when I say Hedlund's is like a store you would stumble into from Diagon Alley after you've already picked out your wand and adopted your snowy white owl. This place is a hardware menagerie. They have everything, but don't attempt to find it yourself. Ask someone who works there, and they will have it for you lickity split. My problem is that when I walk in, I am on sensory overload trying to take in all of the merchandise that fills every knook and cranny. I love to support local businesses. I walked into Hedlund's this evening to have some keys made. I wandered around the clutter...not with dismay...but rather with a "ooohhh, I may need that one day...and wow! haven't seen one of those in years" kind of attitude. I'll be honest though...I was in search of someone to help me make the keys - LOL - the store seemed deserted. But, wandering around, I came across someone and wasn't sure if he was the proprietor or another customer...so I just followed him :-) Turns out it was the proprietor and we chatted while he made my keys. He was rough around the edges, but friendly. We had a nice conversation. The appearance of disorganization is probably just that...an appearance. I'll bet this guy knows where everything in his store is and why he put it there. I give him 4 stars for being a local businessman making a living in suburbia. With Lowe's right across Keystone, he probably doesn't do a great deal of volumne, but the fact that I was in and out of there in under 10 minutes with keys in hand made the experience very pleasant. Zip ties are like the Samuel Jacksons of "when in doubt" situations and always pulls through in any setting -- zip ties, Samuel L. This place just looks cool. All brick... spinning sign from '65. I go in and it's just as cool in there too... old men hangin' around talkin' shop... droppin' advice within ear shot so be aware... It'll be daunting at first... but I really recommend wandering around to find what you need... then asking... 'cus there's cool things in there like "MEN" and "WOMEN" signage for bathrooms. They had what I was looking for. However, I had no shot at finding it myself. If there's ever a big earthquake and Indianapolis is destroyed I am going to go to Hedlund's to restore a sense of normalcy because there is already more merchandise piled on the floor than there is on the shelves, and half of the aisles are impassable because of all the stuff everywhere. Moved to Indy, and was searching for a new neighborhood hardware store since I hate wasting time and gas when going to places like Lowe's. first walked and my impression was "WOW" this place truly is a gem. These guys truly have about everything I could think of. It's hard to put into words, you have to see it to understand it. Merchandise is filled to the ceiling, there is no space left spared, and these guys know where everything is at! I had a long list of things I was searching for, and they asked me If I needed help, and they knocked out my list in no-time. Great Family owned American place that has been around since the 1930's. lots of old stuff and vintage nostalgic feel of a time when america could be proud. If Hedlund's doesn't have it, you probably don't need it. This is a customer assisted hardware store. If you need hardware items for an older home, this is where to come. Want a better quality straw bristle broom? Got it. Want a sprayer that attaches to your indoor faucet? Got one that fits better than the big box store. Need repair suggestions? After loosely explaining why I needed everything the 3 men found the perfect items to save my moving day! That said I have returned several times and the same has occurred. Hedlund's is an acquired taste. Just like the first time you had scotch, Hedlunds will most likely leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. If you take the time to understand the complexities of this neighborhood icon you will enjoy the character that Lowe's will never be able to duplicate. That being said, I am a stickler for efficiency and this place drives me nuts, but there is still something that keeps me coming back. This hardware store has everything you could possibly need. If it's hard to find, Hedlund's has it. While the space is cramped and upon first glance may seem disorganized, the staff knows right where everything is. They efficiently guide you to where you need to be, and pick the parts you ask for. I went to Lowes, Sullivan's, and about 3 other places none of which had what I needed. A thin threaded vacuum breaker for my outside spicket. They knew what it was and when they realized they had just sold the last one, let me know that a new one was coming in on the truck tomorrow. The part was being held for me when I came to get it the next day. Love to shop local, and love that the owners are there all the time. This really is a neighborhood corner hardware store. read more

This place is filled to the brim with inventory. The saving grace is that the people that work here know where everything is and will quickly lead you in the right direction. I've lived here a long time and have recently made a commitment to avoid big box stores and shop at local businesses. I only needed two things, a sprinkler and some key tags. Walking in I felt like my grandfather, who was a hoarder, was reincarnated into this place. It's a menagerie, very cramped and disorganized and makes you feel very claustrophobic but at the same time, it's small enough that an employee is always within earshot and there to help you find exactly what you need. There isn't much rhyme or reason to the layout, but they were kind and I was in and out in five minutes. I prefer Sullivan's but if I don't feel like driving that far, this place will be it. Gramps always seemed like a mess but if he needed something, he always knew where it was. Thank you for reminding me of home and his memory. I agree with Byron J. on this one... rude, rude workers here. I asked a worker about an item I needed, and he said he didn't know and walked away. He started helping some other customer, and I butted in and asked if he could check on this maybe? He yelled something at me (don't remember... this was awhile back. a real a-hole), and I left... he shouted at me on the way out as well. Never stepping foot in there again either. I go to Sullivan's Hardware (any of the locations)... great service there -- you don't get yelled at asking for help at their stores. This is not a store for the weak at heart. If you want brand new merchandise neatly organized on the shelves for rock bottom prices, just keep driving and stop at Lowes. If you're looking for products that are 5, 10, 15 years old, the GOOD stuff made in the USA, this store is for you. You might have to dig around for it, but it's there. Hedlund's is great for small stuff where you want someone to help you find what you need. I'd skip them for anything with a motor. had a bad experience on a lawn mower for which they gave me the bums rush when it had a problem. Their starting position was that it was not covered by warranty, and then set out to prove it. Had to call the manufacturer. read more
