Today, the store looks like it has for the last 50 years. Vintage signs still hang out front of the store, always advertising something interesting. Inside, I found the store packed, with shelves filled up to the ceiling. The store is a bit disorganized and cluttered, but they seem to have everything a do-it-yourselfer might need. Prices are reasonable. The clerk asked us if we needed help and later talked a bit about the store's history. Old photos hang on the wall with Victorian photos of the original Hedlunds. We bought chainsaw oil. We've got to trim some trees. Parking is easy and close to the building. Exiting north requires patience as there is a lot of traffic.

I am a veteran myself so it was an honor and a privilege to support another vet. I was going to get as much as I could there for my current project. I am putting copper grounding rods in the ground for sensitive electronic equipment. I needed the clamps where I could connect copper wire to the clamps and a bit more. I had several smaller hardware needs, and 4 bags of water softener salt to pick up as well. The guy behind the counter greeted me well and asked what I was looking for and pointed me to the end of isle 12. I looked and looked and while he chatted with a couple other customers, I couldn't find what I needed, even after walking most of the store. But he was pretty busy chatting with customers, so I gave up and walked out of the store without buying a thing. I went in there although I was out of my normal area of shopping and considered it an opportunity to support the veteran! Too bad it didn't work out. Oh, and the music was unbelievably loud. I don't recall objecting to the type of music, but you had to raise your voice to talk over the sound level.

I have found the women who work there know more about the products and equipment they have in stock than the men. I think the manager would do well to have a weekly training session to teach employees about the products they sell. Then maybe the employees would have more knowledge and be better prepared to help customers. The parking lot is small and confusing to navigate, but after you've been there a few times you are able to find your way in and out. One thing I'd really like to point out for you is the Johnathan Green fertilizer they sell. It's reasonably priced and will make your lawn an amazing shade of healthy green. Before I entered the store, I noticed annuals were half price, i grabbed a few for a bare spot that I had by the patio. I was on a mission to find some decent scrubbers for my kitchen. A friendly clerk steered me towards aisle 10 where I found a good selection of name brand scrubbers. I found exactly what I wanted. The store carries an amazing selection of grills just in time for Father's Day. These grills have so many bells and whistles. There was an issue at checkout. I was charged full price for the plants. I was glad I checked the receipt. The clerk refunded me the difference. There's plenty of parking in the front of the store.

Russell was very helpful. I was looking at gardening boots, but they didn't have my size. Russell called their other store and was able to offer some options. He was engaging and friendly. The store offers an array of grills, power tools, paints and general hardware supplies. The shelves are remarkably well organized and neat. Many shelves were empty as I assume they are preparing for spring inventory. Many items were on clearance including Yetis so there are some great deals. In the entry alcove is a fascinating history of the hardware store's evolution. The history dates back to at least 1889 when the store was located at 110 West Main Street in Carmel. The store has been owned by four families start with O. W. Nutt prior to 1889. Steve White bought the store in 1984 and built the current location on Rangeline Road in 1989. I love that someone took the time to capture the history. There's plenty of parking in their private lot. You can only enter or exit going north in Rangeline, but the roundabouts make going in the right direction easy.

I was looking for Scott's seed and to my amazement I was informed that they have seed formulated for our area. Wait ... what? 1st: I've never heard of such. 2nd: Where have you been all of my life (well atleast my adult homeowner life)? I explained to the young lady what my issue was in my yard and purchased the seed she recommended and a bale of hay. The young lady was extremely nice and explained the different variations to me as well prior to purchase. Value: well $3.99/lb was a bit pricey when I can get a 10 pound bag of Scott's for $11.99 at Ace Hardware. I am keeping in mind several things: This is a Mom & Pop shop (support of locally owned businesses), the seeds by Scott's are mass produced (made for any and all areas) and lastly this seed is "supposed" to produced for Indiana (that's got to be good, right). So with all of that being stated of course I'm taking the plunge and if it works I'll definitely be back. I'm really excited about it and hoping to see those bare spots in my yard fill in.
