Once we got it home, it was determined the new fireplace wouldn't work for our space and we had to return it. They are charging a 20% restocking fee!!! Never once did they say anything about it being a "custom order/20% restocking fee." I tried to understand why the restocking fee; they said it was to mail the fireplace back. WAIT!!?? It's going to cost them $500 to mail it back to the manufacturer?? I offered to pay the shipping to return it to the manufacturer if that was the issue. They weren't interested in that; they want to collect their $500 "RESTOCKING FEE." We have done a lot of business with this place in the past. In fact, this past Spring, we purchased a large chimenea that is already cracked straight up the middle. It's ready for the trash. This place sure has gone downhill over the last 5 years that we've made purchases with them.

They knowingly delivered us a damaged table and will not make it right. Kelsey will not take your call or call you back. Their service reps read off a script and are the worst! Never buy anything from them! The sales reps are friendly but for the amount of money you pay for their product, you will not get the service you would expect and they will not help with damaged products. I have pictures proving this and they won't honor what we bought with the correct table. I would never ever recommend buying anything from them because the after you give them the money they are done with you.

The store offers an array of grills, power tools, paints and general hardware supplies. The shelves are remarkably well organized and neat. Many shelves were empty as I assume they are preparing for spring inventory. Many items were on clearance including Yetis so there are some great deals. In the entry alcove is a fascinating history of the hardware store's evolution. The history dates back to at least 1889 when the store was located at 110 West Main Street in Carmel. The store has been owned by four families start with O. W. Nutt prior to 1889. Steve White bought the store in 1984 and built the current location on Rangeline Road in 1989. I love that someone took the time to capture the history. There's plenty of parking in their private lot. You can only enter or exit going north in Rangeline, but the roundabouts make going in the right direction easy.

As I noted previously, this is the spot that previously housed Happy Brewery. It was an interesting concept that really never really caught on here. I'm a fan of the Ace Hardware chain - they do a lot more than people realize, and they're a nice blending together of chain perks with a local vibe. Benge's also owns locations in Westfield, Carmel, Greenwood, a couple down south, and my beloved location at the former Arlington Theatre (with marquee still intact). One of my first big fundraising events was at the Arlington - I still miss the place. I first reviewed Benge's during their grand opening week. It was day two. Benge's carries the usual hardware store variety of items - tools, paint/supplies, lawn/garden, heating/cooling, home/decor, building supplies, hardware, grills/smokers, storage, plumbing, lighting/electrical, and even a bit of automotive type stuff. They also carry a surprising amount of bird seed and other items. My most recent visit found me interested because I'd had a mishap with my car's key fob. As anyone who's had a mishap with the key fob knows, it's more challenging than simply getting a key cut and also more expensive. Ugh. Surprisingly, a good majority of Ace locations has this service. They also tend to be somewhat reasonably priced - significantly lower than a car dealer, lower than a locksmith, and in the ballpark of Batteries+ (another surprising location that will do it). Because I was in kind of a weird situation, I spent more time here than expected and I really got to see them work. This is an undeniably urban location in the immediate vicinity of a youth center, a very popular park, a church, and a high residential area. I was impressed with the employees I met here, though they ended up not being able to replace my key fob that day. Then manager, Josh, went above and beyond to help make my existing key fob functional until I could replace it. His relatively quick fix has lasted five days, and it should make it until my new one does come in. I was super impressed. In addition to being a large space, there are actually two floors here. They also do have an elevator in the space for those with mobility issues and/or heavy items. They are observant yet respectful of the kids who come in (let's be honest, their slide to the second floor was destined to attract kids). They also typically have popcorn out, which can draw the kids (they do set respectful limits). They do have accessible parking, and Ace as a chain leans toward disability friendly. They also tend to have a nice diversity of employees across their chain. When a business gets to its one year mark, they've either gotten the kinks worked out or are showing signs of wear. I think Ace has become a valued neighbor here, and my most recent visit shows that they've even managed to improve. I was really impressed with my treatment here, and there's no question I'll return. In terms of the key fob, while it's a chain-wide service there are locations that don't have it. My closer location to my home, Allisonville, offered it but that employee left (as it is a skill) and they don't currently. So, if that's your need I'd recommend calling to make sure. Right now, this location does offer it and went out of the way to make my situation better.

I am a veteran myself so it was an honor and a privilege to support another vet. I was going to get as much as I could there for my current project. I am putting copper grounding rods in the ground for sensitive electronic equipment. I needed the clamps where I could connect copper wire to the clamps and a bit more. I had several smaller hardware needs, and 4 bags of water softener salt to pick up as well. The guy behind the counter greeted me well and asked what I was looking for and pointed me to the end of isle 12. I looked and looked and while he chatted with a couple other customers, I couldn't find what I needed, even after walking most of the store. But he was pretty busy chatting with customers, so I gave up and walked out of the store without buying a thing. I went in there although I was out of my normal area of shopping and considered it an opportunity to support the veteran! Too bad it didn't work out. Oh, and the music was unbelievably loud. I don't recall objecting to the type of music, but you had to raise your voice to talk over the sound level.
