Russell was very helpful. I was looking at gardening boots, but they didn't have my size. Russell called their other store and was able to offer some options. He was engaging and friendly. The store offers an array of grills, power tools, paints and general hardware supplies. The shelves are remarkably well organized and neat. Many shelves were empty as I assume they are preparing for spring inventory. Many items were on clearance including Yetis so there are some great deals. In the entry alcove is a fascinating history of the hardware store's evolution. The history dates back to at least 1889 when the store was located at 110 West Main Street in Carmel. The store has been owned by four families start with O. W. Nutt prior to 1889. Steve White bought the store in 1984 and built the current location on Rangeline Road in 1989. I love that someone took the time to capture the history. There's plenty of parking in their private lot. You can only enter or exit going north in Rangeline, but the roundabouts make going in the right direction easy.

During this time, I bugged Nathan about the progress being made on the parts I needed to be ordered. Then Josh came out yesterday and worked tirelessly in very tight circumstances to diagnose the problem, promising he would be back the next day. Well, he came this morning and was just incredible. I'm not sure, but I think it was not what he was sent to do here, but after many tries with my outdated electric and other things,( including an old bandaid on the heating element), he diagnosed and FIXED my HOT TUB!!! However, I definitely…read moreconsider myself a fan of Ace Hardware and anxiously eyed the opening of this latest location within the Benge's Ace Hardware family - Benge also has locations in Westfield, Carmel, Greenwood, on Five Points, on County Line Road, and that fun little spot on Arlington that used to be the Arlington Theatre (I still miss that place). This spot, of course, is located just inside Butler-Tarkington in the spot previously held by the short-lived Happy Brewery. They weren't happy very long. I wondered what would eventually claim this spot. I'll admit I was surprised to find out it would be a hardware store considering a long existing one across the street had closed down a few years back. However, Benge's is off and running with a soft opening this week followed by a "Grand Opening" this Labor Day weekend. Benge's carries the usual hardware store variety of items - tools, paint/supplies, lawn/garden, heating/cooling, home/decor, building supplies, hardware, grills/smokers, storage, plumbing, lighting/electrical, and even a bit of automotive type stuff. As they are still in a very soft opening, there's some working out the kinks of operations. People are friendly, helpful, and the story itself is bright, new, shiny, and well organized with aisles that are definitely wheelchair friendly. I've historically found Ace to be a disability friendly chain and this location is no different. I also discovered they have their own brand of bird seed - I've become quite fond of taking care of the birds in my yard and I'm excited to find decent bird seed at a good price fairly close to home. I don't think I ever realized how big this space is, however, I was quite impressed (and a little surprised) by the selection. I plan to return during the Labor Day weekend (good sales going on) and have no doubt this will become a regular stop as this is directly on my way home from work. They're also open seven days a week. While Happy Brewing had kept the space pretty intimate, Ace has really opened it up and brightened it up. While I'm glad I got this initial sneak peek, I'm anxious to return and welcome this new business to the Butler-Tarkington area.

I am a veteran myself so it was an honor and a privilege to support another vet. I was going to get as much as I could there for my current project. I am putting copper grounding rods in the ground for sensitive electronic equipment. I needed the clamps where I could connect copper wire to the clamps and a bit more. I had several smaller hardware needs, and 4 bags of water softener salt to pick up as well. The guy behind the counter greeted me well and asked what I was looking for and pointed me to the end of isle 12. I looked and looked and while he chatted with a couple other customers, I couldn't find what I needed, even after walking most of the store. But he was pretty busy chatting with customers, so I gave up and walked out of the store without buying a thing. I went in there although I was out of my normal area of shopping and considered it an opportunity to support the veteran! Too bad it didn't work out. Oh, and the music was unbelievably loud. I don't recall objecting to the type of music, but you had to raise your voice to talk over the sound level.
