One of our go to locations to grab a quick sandwich order. We usually visit the store on Forest and occasionally the one on Esplanade. At the Forest store the staff is quick and courteous. Chico local, been buying bread here for 10+ years. Bought 2 Cinnabrust bread this morning. We cut a couple pieces for the kids first and then cut one for ourselves. First bite made us wonder if we were eating week-old bread. Even the kids wouldnt finish their slices. Absolutely unacceptable for a bakery. They claim they ran out of bags and the bags they used contributed to make it still. Brought them back to the store and the lady at the register told us they were not from today and that someone should have told us. They said they have instructions from new owners not to accept return if cut. Definitely poor customer service. They certainly lost a long time customer. read more

It's fine LOL there's nothing special about them except for their salted caramel brownies. Those are the best brownies I've ever had that I didn't make myself. My fiance couldn't believe how insanely good they were! When you order online, expect them to call you that they don't have something that it said they had in stock. Almost anytime I pre-ordered, I get a call that they don't have such and such. It's quite annoying that they can't properly keep up on their stock like literally anywhere else I order from an advance which is anywhere I'm going to pick up food from, where I am not dining in. It's a nice location though, out of the way from all of the idiots of this area which is plentiful, it's nice and dark in there which I like. The bread is very good but the blond girl behind the counter was overtly rude to me. I had to repeat myself numerous Times And tolerate her Eye rolling and deep sighs. White bread loaf was white bread loaf, nothing to write home about. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to pick up bread. I love me some GHBC.! It can get pretty crowded during lunch, so best to fax/call in your order if you can. Their breads, soups, sandwiches and drinks are all GREAT : ) Their seating area is a little compact, but in the warmer months, they also have a few seats outside. When we were passing through Chico, I pulled up yelp to find a local treasure. I was shocked to find not one but 3 GHB's in the city. Happy Birthday to me...literally (we were headed to Lake Almanor for Birthday weekend camping). And yes. I know it's a chain but that doesn't count when it originates in your home state :) Even with the mass expansion, the restaurant is still good. It was fun being able to unexpectedly introduce some of my food history to the kids. The sample bread slice they gave us while ordering is smaller than what I remember from Butte, MT (but still hearty). I usually get one of the sweeter breads as my sample and save it for dessert. However, as a family, we each got a different flavor and cut up the slices to make a fun sample platter appetizer. I can't remember our exact orders but I know I got the Southwestern Turkey on the Dakota bread (my go-to bread choice) and my husband's plate was clean before I had a chance to steal a bite. Not sure what is going on at this location. Came in just after 8 am to pick up coffee and a panini. All four employees looked hung over. Both the females had a cold, disinterested demeanor. One of them wouldn't even make eye contact with me, even though I was standing 3 feet from the counter while she was standing at the register. Even though there was only one other customer, everyone was moving like pond water. The mocha was terrible and tasted like watered down hot cocoa with a splash of instant coffee. The panini I ordered to go was good, which somewhat offset the rest of my experience this morning. It had been some time since I was there. As much as I love Great Harvest's bread and food personally, I have to give them one star for the way my husband and I were treated when we came across a problem during lunch one day. We had sandwiches. Mine was great, his had a bread tie (metal wire with most of the paper missing) in his that stabbed his upper gum and got stuck. He had to remove it, but it was swollen and pained him for days. We handed the bloody bread tie to a lady who seemed less than impressed (because this must happen all the time!) and she offered us a cookie. We didn't want a cookie, we wanted an apology and for her to speak with her employees about paying more attention when preparing food. She told me there was nothing she could do besides give us a free cookie.... I still want to eat here because I love the food, but it's unnerving knowing you may get stabbed with a foreign object and no one will care. read more

The customer service was HORRIBLE..I actually left the place feeling depressed and irritated by the two girls and their major attitude. Love this place! I love good bread and this place KNOWS what good bread is. I usually come here right before work and I love that the place is always clean and staff members are ready to help me. Their scones are amazing. I think I've tried all and my favorites are: pumpkin, mixed berry, and strawberry cheesecake. My coworkers love their salted caramel brownies. I went to this location (forest) about an hr ago. I ordered a sandwich, soup and a large iced tea. The employees weren't very friendly or helpful. I wasn't asked if I have a stamp card or offered one. After I ordered I waited for about 20 minutes thinking they would call my name when my order was ready. It was pretty busy so I assumed that was the reason why it was taking so long. Finally I went up there and asked about my order. She asked the workers in the back if they had my order all of them said no. My order had been sitting on a tray. No one ever called my name. I was very unhappy with my visit because the day before I went to the esplanade location and it was a total different experience. They were friendly and helpful. Chico has a serious customer service issue, and this GHB outlet suffers from it. I have only been to the Forest Avenue location; maybe the other in town is better managed. Here's my beef: The philosophy of Great Harvest Bread Company, as stated on their website, is: "Be loose and fun, bake phenomenal bread, run fast to help customers, create strong exciting bakeries, and give generously to others." At this location, the college girls behind the counter are slow and apathetic, and - worst of all! - they are extremely stingy with the samples! I've been in other GHB stores (not in Chico) where they have an entire loaf of each of the daily breads for you to choose from. You point, and they cheerfully slice off a huge piece, fresh for you. At the Forest Avenue location, the samples are PRE-sliced. This means they get dried out and stale really quickly. Plus, there are only a couple options to choose from. If you're going to give samples, give generously! The more sampling I get to do, the more likely I am to buy MORE. Not just out of a feeling of obligation, but because I've been tempted into an impulse purchase. read more
