Yes, I'm giving them a four-star review, but I have caveats. First of all, for the pleasant stylists who I've interacted with, and for my own personal experience as a middle-aged man with thinning hair, I'd give them five stars. Here's why: Great Clips proves a great service in a clean, airy environment and does so at a great value. That said, my partner isn't crazy about taking our three kids here because I sometimes lack the vocabulary as well as vision to explain exactly what haircuts they should get. One kid with long, unkempt hair ended up with a kind of bob that a sibling said resembled Dora the Explorer, and not inaccurately. Another kid who hasn't gotten a proper haircut in at least a year went in for a "cleanup" and ended up looking like he hadn't had his hair cut at all. Of course, that used to be the sign of a quality haircut, when your hair was perfect but no one could tell you'd gone in for a trim. But this end result looked almost unchanged. Yes, I realize these two cases were both my fault, as I thought I was providing creative license (in Spanish, nonetheless) but really just sounded like I didn't know what I was talking about. And I don't really speak "stylist." I should just said, at least for the second kid, "Just buzz it with a No. 4 clipper." Their mom would have given one star, but I have to bear the brunt of the blame. Will I return for a haircut? Absolutely. Will I bring the kids again? Yes, and I'll convey simpler instructions. Quality has declined a lot in the past year, and I have been going here regularly for 5+ years. I get a fairly standard type of haircut but it has been getting faster and sloppier (uneven cuts, missed sections, poor trimming around ears and neck). I don't know if this is due to poor training or carelessness, or both, but the stylists really need to pay more attention to detail and spend a few extra minutes cutting and rechecking. I typically go when there's nobody else waiting so there's no excuse for the results I get. Complicated requests may result in disaster because some stylists speak very little English. read more

I am incredibly disappointed in the haircut my friend received at this Great Clips. We went together and the staff was overall kind, location was clean, but that's all the praise I can give it. She requested a touch up on her pixie cut with a bit of volume and wispy layers and what came out of it was the worst cut she's ever gotten. It was a mismatched choppy layered micro-bang style with unfortunately little finesse. The cost of the cut is affordable, but this is one of those instances that I think you have to bite the bullet and pay extra to go to a real salon. Stay far away from this spot, I'm truly disheartened to see how sad my friend was coming out of this place. Never again. read more

** Very Unprofessional and Frustrating Experience** I don't usually leave reviews, but our experience at Great Clips was so upsetting that I feel like others should be warned. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was uncomfortable. The ladies working there were extremely rude and unwelcoming. It felt like they had no interest in helping us or even listening to what we wanted. We tried to explain clearly what kind of haircut we were looking for, but instead of listening, they kept interrupting, acted impatient, and seemed annoyed that we were even asking questions. What made things worse was that they didn't follow any of our instructions. They made their own decisions about the haircut as if they knew better, even though we were the customers. They didn't check with us before making changes, and by the time we realized what they were doing, it was too late to fix it. It was very frustrating to watch them ignore what we asked for and then act like everything was fine. Their tone and attitude throughout the entire visit were just disrespectful. It honestly felt like we were bothering them by being there, which is not how a paying customer should ever be treated. Instead of trying to communicate or solve the issue, they just rushed through the haircut and brushed off any concerns we had. There was no professionalism, no kindness, and definitely no customer service. We left feeling extremely disappointed and upset, not just because of the bad haircut but because of how poorly we were treated. It was not just a bad experience--it was a stressful one. Do you know what it's like to have a really bad haircut? Well, you may not have to know, if you abide my warning. I went to Great Clips for a SIMPLE layered look on short hair, and it was completely botched. The entire haircut took 15 minutes, as if she was rushing. And the layers ended up being super choppy, and the front is not tapered at all. Now, I have to wait months to grow out my hair to undo this mess. It has pretty much shattered all my confidence. I can't believe a single hair cut, could've done this much damage to my wellbeing. It's really a hit or miss when you go here. Most of the times, it's a miss. Great Clips - HORRIBLE!!! - Hair Salons Near Me - Union Township, New Jersey

I've been going there for a long time. Not too often, I don't ask for anything too complicated. Unfortunately, when there's a good hairdresser, she doesn't stay long at this place. I went this morning, right after they opened. The lady printed my "file", I told her I wanted to change it. My hair was below half of my back, I used to get long layers. I told her I wanted 1 inch shorter, straight, and shorter layers to frame my face (I specifically said those words). Important to say here, we are both Spanish speakers, there's no misunderstanding. She trimmed 1 inch straight from my back, asked me where I wanted the front length, and trimmed that in 3 different heights. She worked in some layers in the back (45 degree angle from bottom). Then she started blow drying my hair. I tried to stop her, she said to let her finish. Two minutes later I stopped her, and asked where my layers were. She showed me. I said: "But I told you I wanted a butterfly cut" (during our chatting). She said: "Oh, you want shorter layers?" "Yes, I told you so. I told you I wanted shorter layers, and wanted the hair shorter around my face." I said that butterfly haircuts could be done by holding the hair all the way up, but she told me that that's what you see in YouTube, but that they (at Great Clips) are professionals, and they don't do that. Side note: some professionals on YouTube show how to do the butterfly cut the way I told her. So, she starts trimming. Another detail: she was using all the time some sewing scissors. It's important to mention that the professionals and not professionals in YouTube emphasize to use hair scissors. Also, all of them do little trimmings perpendicularly, so the hair doesn't get totally straight. Nothing of the sort happened during my appointment. She finished (?), and asked me how I was going to pay. No questions about if was happy with what she had done. I looked at my hair, she said she couldn't spend the whole day in one haircut. Well, if you did it right, I would have been gone by now (this was in my head, I didn't say it aloud). My hair was cut below my shoulders, shorter in the back, longer at the front, like a step, and then I had a layer underneath to my original length minus the 1 inch she had already taken. It was hideous. I was asking "What is this?", and the other hairdresser said something. I didn't hear what she said, but I asked her to repeat herself, and she ignored me. The "professional" hairdresser who was taking care of me told me she hadn't said anything to me, that she was on the phone (without phone or earbuds on sight). Anyway, I told her that my hair was horrible, that I couldn't go out like that, and that I needed her to cut all that lower layer that show up there, below the step in my head. She did. At the end, I lost 5 inches of my hair, when I had said I just wanted a trim and layers. I regret not answering her I wouldn't pay cash or credit for that abomination when she asked me earlier. I took advantage of a coupon for $10 off, I ended paying $7, no tip. Never again. I've been going there for around 8-10 years, since they opened. I guess you get what you pay for. I have my hair in a ponytail all day, tomorrow I will try the "unprofessional" butterfly method to try to fix it. Zero stars. read more

Not good for men's hair at all. They only know how to cut one type of hairstyle and even if you ask for something different, they'll recommend the standard cut of short all around. They just are not properly trained for different common men's hairstyles. The boss should ensure the hairdressers are properly trained. There is also a language barrier for some of the hairdressers but they should know basic English phrases relevant to their job. When the hairdresser doing my hair asked the other for help translating, the other hairdresser just told to her how she was doing it was fine and to not ask too many questions. Highly recommend guys go elsewhere. read more

Well, tonight my sister and I walked in to discover the current manager, "Christina. She was finishing up with a male client and she politely asked that if we hadn't already checked in, to please do so, online if possible. My sister went first with a shampoo and enjoyed an incredible and relaxing scalp massage. The extra $4 for the shampoo is soooooo worth it. The next thing I knew, rather than just the casual small talk or therapy venting that usually occurs, we were getting an education about Hair! I was amazed!! Christina is a true Professional, she provides such helpful information tailored to each individual hair type, weaknesses, pros and cons, etc. I learned so much and her enthusiasm about her profession was contagious, We could feel that she cared if we understood about our hair. I inquired about home remedies like castor or coconut oil and she discussed them freely without trying to lure us into buying the products there. I could go on and on............. Bottom line, I don't want to go anywhere else ever again. We both loved our cuts and brought a very fussy friend a few nights later, where a Mother and 6 yr old autistic son were leaving. The Mom was amazed at how her son just warmed right up to Christina and you could tell how comfortable he was with her. She said It was the First time ever that he didn't throw a fit.... What is the point of registering if the screens are always off when you enter showing you your position in line? Great clips app allows you to register and sends you a message when you are up. I left home after a 50 min wait time and was there 5-10 mins after I got my message. There were two other people, one who walked in while I was parking in front. They took both the people before me. Certainly possible they had registered before me but if the screen was on, I would know they should be ahead of me, but keeping it off is just wrong - there is no point to using technology in this way. I will give it one more try, if it's the same, I am going back to Wachung - the extra drive is worth the professionalism. read more

I've had haircuts done by beauty schools that are training and they did a way better job than this! The lady gave me half a mullet and half a face-framing haircut and called it "asymmetrical". I gave it a few days to see maybe it will look better over time and it didn't! I can't even put it on a ponytail to hide it because she cut more than I originally requested! As I was entering the parking lot from Rt 22 Great clips had signs up saying "Hair Cut Sale $7.99. I thought "Great I really could use a hair cut". I went in and told them I would like to get the advertised $7.99 hair cut. They told me that "The sale is Over". I told them what are you talking about, they still have sighs up advertising the sale. They said that they "Forgot to take the signs down". They would not give me the advertised price because the sale was over. I said Ok, just please take the signs so as to not false advertise if the sale was over. They said they would. The next day the same $7.99 signs were still up. I just brought my adorable 2 year old in for a haircut and the lady that did his hair was just plain nasty! I've never had an issue getting my son's haircut, he's always cooperative, but this lady blamed him and his parents (my husband and I) for his movement and messing up his hair. When my toddler would say anything, she would contradict him and say something I found disrespectful towards us. I should have just walked out. They are pretty busy so I recommend you download the app and check in so you are placed in line and it gives you an approximate wait time. I would give them a chance. I witnessed a lady flipping out on the poor hairdresser because she would not cut her son's beard for free...like really lady ? They have their list of services clearly posted, and a beard trim is listed, meaning you have to pay for that !! Lol. I go back nearly every time I get a haircut because Lori gets my style right every single time. For that reason I'm also not afraid to drop another $15-20 on product when I need it. She takes her time and my mom leaves feeling pampered and beautiful. I usually don't write reviews but this is one time that I felt that I had to share what a amazing value Great Clips in Union is. You may not be paying the big bucks the fancy salons charge but I think you will be pleasantly surprised that a great cut and style is still possible without breaking the bank. Great Clips in Union is the only place for me. I have a pixie cut that many other salons have been unable to maintain and or cut to my liking. My only concern is the turn around and retention of excellent hairstylists. My favorite is Lori over the last year we've become very acquainted, it's true who knows more about you than your hairstylist. Everyone is very professional and I notice many repeat customers nice when you walk in to be greeted by your name. So nearly a year later, and the service and haircuts have drastically turned downed hill. Less workers, different workers, less coupons, and even worse haircuts. Earlier, there was 1 worker who did my whole cut in less than 10 minutes (used only machine). They don't ask what they do - they just cut as until you complain. Then after you pay, they automatically added 3 dollars of tip to my credit card without asking. It's a shame, was one of my favorite places and now I don't plan on stepping foot in there. read more

My first time coming here, I usually get a 2 on the sides and a little of the top and I asked the barber to get a square cut on the back and when I got home the straight cut was on an angle. I ended up going to another barber shop to get it fixed. Maybe it was an off day. read more
