Ate at Grato for the first time in quite a while. I was majorly disappointed in the Chicken Parm - which should be a no brainer. The chicken itself was of a mystery meat quality and over breaded with soggy breading. The sauce was heavy and mediocre. Even the side of pasta had a stale quality. The food, host and the decorations are the only good things here. The service was terrible! My bronzino had so many lemon seeds in it but overall the taste was good. Our waiter was difficult to track down, he didn't explain the menu well, I had no sides with my meal. Other around us complained about the food portions. This was not our first choice in restaurants but we ended up here because other places required reservations - lesson learned make reservations! To start, we ordered short rib rice balls, ahi tuna tartare, and for our main dishes, the chicken saltimbocca and chicken parmigiana with a side of homemade spaghetti. The meals were OUTSTANDING and some of the best we've ever had. Great portions, beautiful presentation and unique appetizers. My wife and I decided to go out tonight last minute. We went to Tabor road restaurant. They were full at 6 pm. The host said try next door. Grato is next door. Our first time there. We never knew about this fabulous restaurant till tonight. Glad tabor road was full or we would have never gone there. Amazing food, dining room and service. It was my Dad's 60th bday and we were looking for a nice, classy restaurant with great food. We usually go to Tabor Road Tavern, but we decided to give Grato (which is just next door) a try, since it is also owned by the same company. Parking was easy, plenty of spots and it wasn't too busy on a Thursday night. From the moment we got in, the service was excellent and highly professional. The first thing you notice is that the lighting gives the place a very warm vibe. Even my 92 year old grandma noticed how nice the atmosphere was! First thing we ordered was a bottle of pinot grigio, which was actually pretty cheap (only $30). Then we focused our attention on the menu to see what Grato had to offer. We went with the mussels bianco, beef capaccio, and crispy calamari & hot cherry peppers. My favorite of the appetizers was the mussels, as they tasted very fresh and flavorful. The beef capaccio was a nice, light appetizer, perfect really. The crispy calamari was a little bit of a letdown as it was not really crispy at all. For my entree, I went with Linguine E Vongole, which is basically a seafood pasta dish with jumbo shrimp, clams, and we also got scallops added as well. This dish really made the whole meal for me. The jumbo shrimp was juicy and delicious and the scallops were nice and tender and packed with flavor. My grandma got the halibut dish, which honestly did not taste that good, a little over cooked and just not a lot of flavor. My mom got the ravioli and it was exceptional. So it is a little hit or miss, but definitely more hits than misses. For our desserts, we got the peanut butter oreo and tiramisu. The tiramisu is of course a little boring, since every Italian restaurant serves it and they generally all taste exactly the same. The peanut butter oreo, thought, was different and tasted great, not too rich like some of the other options. What was really surprising is that after ordering pretty much whatever we wanted, it only came out to $65 per person, which I felt was a huge bargain, all things considered. From the moment we walked in the Manager promptly seated us and explained the menu. Our server Clarisa did a wonderful job! Our food was amazing! Everything was so flavorful! From the freshly baked focaccia to the divine burata caprese to my tasty carbonara. The Halibut was out of this world! So fresh and full of flavors. I am so impressed! Will definitely be back! This is essentially Olive Garden with slightly better bread and 2X the prices. Pretty decor but clearly an expense account destination for people who would likely be far more discerning with their own money. Most notable problem here is staff - inept and bumbling - with no sign of adult supervision except for a guy walking around with a suit who appears to have eye problems since he can't see people attempting to wave him down. My experience started with a waiter nearly singeing my face with a hot pizza shoves about an inch from me, no apology offered as he then reached around me as if in a wrestling match to lay a plate or something else on the other side. Very awkward and rude. Then the bartender had a problem making a martini - the first try tasted like pure olive water with a trace of dish washer detergent, her second attempt tasted like pure olive water with a bigger trace of the dirty water. Chose to abandon the attempt as I wanted to stay sober anyway to keep vigilant over being attacked again the clumsy waiter. Food here in one word - Olive Garden (yes I know that's 2) on a bad night. Over salty, sloppily plated and processed tasting. My table of 12 thankfully on bosses expense account uniformly disappointed. Wine list is very limited with decent choices but overpriced - 15 to 18 dollar retail bottles for 55 to 70. Salads here however are shockingly good - fresh, beautifully plated and nicely dressed without glopping. Not recommended. read more

I visited Grato for dinner on a Monday evening with a work colleague. We arrived about 6:30 PM or so and the restaurant was about half full. I would classify it as an upscale Italian restaurant of which we have many in the area. Grato shares a parking lot with the larger Tabor Road Tavern. When our waiter arrived we asked what the daily specials were since there was no insert in the menu. We were informed that there were none, which seemed strange. Nevertheless there are many choices on the regular menu. We shared the Saluma (sp?) which is an appetizer platter of mostly meats but also some cheese, olives and grapes. This was probably the best part of the food items during our visit. I had the rigatoni bolagnese which I would say was fair - I have had better at several other local places - and my friend had the halibut. He reported that it was OK but seemed to be a bit overcooked. Overall I would return to Grato but probably not on frequent basis as there are many other choices in the local area that are better. read more

I came to Grato for lunch a couple of months ago. It was a corporate outing with our client and two of my co-workers. That being said, i think this would really suite people who want to bring work people somewhere for a decent simple meal. Our waiter was super pleasant and helped diffuse the awkwardness that comes with corporate lunches haha. The table is covering in a large paper sheet which I thought was kind of odd. The food was alright. Nothing amazing and if Im being completely honest not worth the price. I wouldn't come back on my own but the scallops and risotto had me feeling preeeeety food drunk so I'd recommend those if you have a chance to come. read more

Can't comment on the entrées because we didn't get any, but the pasta was fantastic. The pumpkin ravioli was amazing. And the prosciutto on the tortellini was delicious. When I got there they gave me a box the size of a postage stamp!! It wasn't a pizza pie...it was a pizza joke. I got an overcooked tail piece of salmon. Probably all you need to know about the quality of the rest of the food. The dish had a side of watercress lettuce, no vinaigrette or anything on it. The soda was warm, the coffee was cold. Parm pizza was as delicious as a hockey puck. The water had a funky taste. They need a filter on their faucet. And the fireplace makes it about 200 degrees. Sitting at Routes 10 and 53 in Morris Plains, Grato mostly lived up to expectations from a bartender at sister restaurant and neighbor Tabor Road Tavern. No question the service was superb, but the bars for food and ambiance were set high from visiting Trap Rock Restaurant & Brewery and Tabor Road within the Harvest Restaurants family. After we sat down, Miguel introduced himself as Geoff's helper. Neither busbuy nor waiter, Miguel helped with water, selecting wine (great job!), bread and witty humor. Geoff helped with selecting the Roasted Squash salad and - observing how we planned to share the salad - suggested bringing the salad and two pasta dishes as three courses, splitting each on two plates. Bravo. Squash salad is highly recommended, with Gorgonzola cheese adding perfect punch. Goat cheese gnocchi was too mild, but the Autumn Ravioli with pumpkin captured our attention. Wrapping up dinner was the well-reviewed panna cotta, topped with melt-in-your mouth raspberry sorbet. From start to finish, Grato was absolutely amazing. The food was phenomenal but the service was even better. Todd, the manager, was great and stopped by our table to check in and chat toward the end of our meal. Chef Brian even came out at the end of our meal to talk with us. He went out of his way to accommodate a special dessert request that is on their catering menu but not their regular menu so our group could try it prior to our event we're having at Grato later this year. All those small little touches were beyond expectation. However, food and management aside, the best part of the night was our server, Mya. I can't say enough about how wonder she truly was. She was funny, sweet, attentive without being overbearing, and just a great part of our meal there. She enhanced the already fun evening. When we were ordering dessert, she learned we were there to test the food as we're hosting my sister's rehearsal dinner there [already booked so they weren't trying bribe us lol] and sent over a cannoli plate with "congratulations" written on it for the future bride and groom. We got the charcuterie board as an appetizer and I would definitely recommend it, it had lots of fresh meats and cheeses that were delicious. It was a slightly off night for Grato, but still overall enjoyable. The main course was very good, lobster ravioli and penne bolognese. Nice amount of ravioli's, some restaurants will be cheap on number of ravioli's when it's a special, and the lobster ravioli also had a nice flavor and not overwhelming lobster flavor. The appetizers were good, though the shrimp appetizer was only 3 shrimp. On the downside was they seemed understaffed. There was a long wait between our appetizers, which we ordered three but did not get the salad and when the main course came. Not for lack of hard work by our waiter who I could see trying to service as many tables as possible. Eventually the manager served us. The waiter came back and did us a solid, by giving us free drinks since we had to wait and never got the salad. He was also really helpful on advice on the drinks to order. One suggestion, is when being seated the hostess or whoever hands the menu should give everyone a minute to read the menu before ordering drinks, noticed this with folks around us as well. Tro Color Chopped- This is my favorite salad. The combination of gorgonzola, dates, pignoli, apple and sherry vinaigrette is so good. It is a bit sweet but made to perfection. For dinner entree I was craving pasta but one thing I hate is when they put too much sauce. I ordered the Linguine e Vongole! OMG! The best. It did not have too much sauce and the clams, pancetta, chili flakes and garlic bread crumbs was great. I ate this baby all up. The best part is that they make their pasta here. It is fresh and yummy. My boyfriend ordered the Grilled Pork Chop and he loved it. It was made exactly like he wanted. I also tried a side of meatballs. It was great as well. For Dessert: I decided to order the Mango Sorbet. I am a big fan of mango and this was not too sweet. It was great. The food is amazing here. Also, what impressed me the most is how attentive and friendly the manager was. He was so involved and made sure we loved our meal. He stopped and chatted with us. Our waiter was also great. Best service ever! This is my favorite spot for business lunches and dinner events. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They never rush you, are always attentive and make you feel important. If you tell them you are celebrating and events, they'll bring complimentary dessert with chocolate writing on a plate for your event ( i.e. happy birthday, happy anniversary, etc). The food is very good, great, delicious... But not amazing. I think it's the lack of personality of this food that doesn't make it 5 stars for me. The steak I had last time was perfectly cooked, but lacked flavor. The pasta before was very delicious, but nothing special to remember. I can continue this list as I've been to Grato about 10 times if not more.
