Hadn't seen my old friend in a long time, and he suggested dinner in Mendham, where he's now living. I wasn't enthusiastic, but he said to meet him at his Dad's house in Bernardsville, and he'd drive me up and back (with my bad night vision, I don't relish the thought up driving up through the Bernardsville mountains into Mendham in the dark, a hesitancy of which he's aware of). Given that he was making it as easy and painless as possible, how could I say no? He suggested Dante's. I was agreeable enough, but with the new draconian diet I'm on, I had a little trepidation about ordering. It's almost an article of faith that in any new Italian restaurant I try, I'll be ordering (a) pasta fagioli (b) lasagna (c) ice cream. The parking in back didn't seem particularly spacious to my cataract-compromised eyesight, but my friend was able to secure a spot without difficulty. Inside the restaurant was large and airy (an impression helped along, no doubt, by the fact that we were the only patrons at that point), and the server was friendly and enthusiastic. We followed her to our table and perused the menu. No lasagna, so I was relieved of that particular temptation. Pasta fagioli was there under "Appetizers", but I was able to resist. The server presented us with complimentary Foccia Bread with cheese, which was delicious. We ordered glasses of water, and the only negative part that I could relate about the whole night's experience was that I also ordered a Coke, which I never got. Then again, the server might have perceived I was on a draconian diet, and realized that a Coke, with all its calories and sugar, wasn't going to help me in that endeavor. All joking aside, she was friendly and efficient, and I have no complaints about the service. Bathrooms were clean and functional. I ended up ordering the Lemon Sole Oreganata, accompanied by fresh broccoli and 2 sizable shrimp. I've never had a problem ordering fish (other than the expense) but I was a little apprehensive that it might not be filling enough. It was -- both filling and tasty. As usual, I didn't pay much attention to what my friend ordered, but he expressed more than an abundant satisfaction with it. A word about ice cream--- I've given up alcohol, opioids, and I've been adhering to the diet I've belatedly become serious about (in a few months, I've lost 24 pounds), but I'm never entirely going to give up ice cream (and at some point in the future I expect to eat lasagna again too; not often, but...occasionally...). I haven't had a lot of ice cream since I started the diet, but...given my restraint when it came to the pasta fagioli...I threw caution to the wind and ordered 2 scoops of vanilla. I anticipated small scoops, but they were large ones. Did that stop me? No. I consumed this rare treat with great alacrity. It was a delicious, satisfying indulgence. And... next morning...I discovered I had actually lost a pound. I'm happy that ice cream can be like a cousin who lives far away. You don't see them often, but when you do, it's a happy, satisfying occasion. And lasagna? It's that favored uncle who lives in upstate NY... The prices are reasonable enough, the food is plentiful, fresh and tasty, and there's a pleasant, down-home atmosphere to dining here. After we had been seated, a group of happy, Italian-speaking people came in to partake, and they seemed like regulars. Evidently, Dante's has been around for a long time, and I look forward to dining there again. Recommended. read more

Went on a Friday night with a group of 6 and the place was pretty empty. The rice balls were pretty good, the fried calamari was overcooked and hard. Our dinners took an extremely long time to come, and they only brought 4 of them. We then sat there for at least another 10 minutes when we were finally able to flag one of the 6 employees down who were standing around doing nothing, to check on the 2 meals. They then immediately brought them out so it was obvious they had been sitting there. I ordered the papparadelle with veal sauce. There was absolutely no meat in the sauce and the pasta was overcooked and mushy. Some others liked their meals. The service was horrible. The waiter didn't come over once to ask if everything was OK nor did anyone ever apologize for what happened with the 2 meals. As a group we all agreed we would never return there. read more

Lived in Mendham/Chester area for a while. Had pizza at Dante's but this is the first time at in the restaurant. Wow was I missing out. The service and food were great! Had the halibut special. Love the food. Spinach salad with burrata, crispy prosciutto and balsamic glaze. Always a hard to choose on main course fusilli, sausage and broccoli rabe in garlic and olive oil. So far we've only ordered pizza from Dante's and it's solid. My son loves their Buffalo chicken pizza and it's the only place he'll order from in the area because it doesn't come with a glob of ranch or blue cheese. The nonna's pie is great too. I've eaten at Dantes many times because it's very good and very local. When friends come to visit from out of town, I always take them there. The ambience is calm and it's a good place to have great conversations and enjoy each other's company. The waitstaff is friendly and efficient and I never feel rushed. The selection is excellent and the quality of the food is good. I think they do a really good job and I'm a good cook! I feel the prices are quite reasonable for the quality and quantity of food provided. So many times I've had an upset stomach after eating out so I choose my restaurants very carefully now. My stomach has always felt fine after eating at Dantes, no matter what I have ordered. I highly recommend it. read more

During the COVID-19 crisis, we ordered from Dante's and the results were a huge thumbs up! The cavatelli prima was delicious with plenty of sauce and pasta. I wanted to like this place - the owner was walking around and the servers were nice. It may have been what I picked but didn't like my dinner. And once the food came we never saw the waiter again until he brought the check. Fettuccini with veggies and pink sauce (granno primavera). Carrots, broccoli, fettuccini swimming in sauce - looked like a huge bowl of soup and everything in the bowl was heavily coated in this orange sauce. I couldn't eat more than 2 bites of it. The waiter just took the entire bowl away without asking when I just said I didn't want to wrap anything to bring home. I feel like he should have at least asked - it was a lot of food he would be throwing away. And it was a $20 dinner. So probably a one and done for this place. read more

Absolutely love Dante's. It's become a Mendham institution and I can't believe it's taken me so long to review. The food here is excellent. Favorites include the capellini con gamberi (angel hair pasta with shrimp in a really light but tasty pink sauce), their salad with beers, goat cheese and asparagus and risotto verdura appetizer (risotto with pesto flavor and shrimp). They have family meals for takeout during the week which are an awesome value and can feed a lot of people! Choices for this are more standard Italian fare (chicken parm, chicken francese, etc.) but are good versions of the classics. They come with pasta, salad, and garlic knots as well. Dantes is also a great community contributor - helping support other businesses that were fire damaged, offering discounted pizzas to local schools, etc. We've dined in, but we end up getting takeout here much more often than dining in, as the atmosphere is better for couples or groups than for families like ours with 3 young kids. All in all, a great local place that is worth visiting if you are in town and frequenting if you live here. read more

Went to a birthday party there with a large group and it was excellent. The back room was perfect and the service and food were impressive. Did take out two times after that and both orders were missing food that was charged for. Not happy! Went to dinner recently and the salmon with the sweet potatoes fries and gorgonzola was delicious. The veal special was overpriced and very small for over 35 dollars. It was just ok. Service was awful. Three men were in our room with only one other table filled on a Friday eve. They spent more time standing around talking and ignoring us until we had to reach out to get more bread ( and we were looked at like we were asking for gold).... They spilled a full glass of wine and never attempted to give us a freebie for the loss. read more

My wife and I had child care so we went out for a week night date night. The owner was there and very welcoming and friendly and took great care of us. We got the ricotta appetizer and it was great and a great size portion. I got the salmon over spinach and we shared a side of broccoli rabe. My wife got the Zappa de pesce and it was also a very generous serving. Our meals were excellent in-line with the service. We finished off the meal with tiramisu which was great. Oh and the pre meal focaccia was delicious as well. The prices were very reasonable. We will definitely be back. Sorry no pictures, the food didn't last long enough. read more

We celebrated our daughter's college acceptance to her first choice school at Dante's this evening. It was our first visit at our daughter suggestion based on her love of the pizzas they supply to her HS for lunch time help with college applications. We had the place to ourselves and the owner Tony as our waiter. The service and food were terrific and we enjoyed all of our dishes from the calamari to pizza, pasta, veal and chicken and desserts. Tony was also kind enough to comp our daughter's dessert in honor of her celebration...such a kind touch. Everything was fresh and really well prepared and they were so kind and friendly and ensured we were comfortable even adjusting the heat for me on a chilly night. The meal was a great value and delicious-- a terrific local gem. We don't live in Mendham but it stood out to us as something unique and delicious compared with the saturated Italian restaurant market in our own town. We will be back! read more

What a blessing for the Mazzola family from Dante's R estaurant in Mendham, NJ. Dante's also topped the huge meal with desserts. The Mazzola's had a baby girl, Clare Marie who almost died. She could not eat with a twisted tongue and born with Down's Syndrome, and an abnormal aorta,. They live on the grounds of Delbarton School in Morristown. Dante's has the best pizza in the area. I have had them cater for me as well and have never been disappointed. Coming from the Newark / NY area it was always hard to get good pizza out this way--but these fine Italians have it down well. Nonna and Meat Lover's pizza are excellent. Some people ordered the pasta special and had rave reviews and not one other person had any negative comments on the regular menu meals. The only reason it isn't a 5 star review is because our meals took over an hour after we ordered them. 2 people had to take meals to go due to the length of time to get them. Recently moved to Mendham and was looking for a good place to get delivery from. The other delivery restaurants in town are nothing impressive. My whole experience with Dante's was great. Very easy to order online, and the food came very quick (and it was a very large order)! I loved the pizza, pasta, and sandwich I got. Everything was delicious. The bread they use for their sandwiches really wrapped everything together. The pizza was the perfect slice. And the pasta sauce was very flavorful. The restaurant that never disappoints! How fortunate I am to have it right around the corner for over 25 yrs. My family planned my "big" birthday there last night - all 7 of us (thanks to Covid!) We were in private party room with our own restroom- family style appys of foccaccia, crispy calamari & eggplant rollantine were all top rate- fantasia salad delicious! That cld have been dinner but then we had choice of 6 sumptuous entrees (mine was Cappellini Gamberi -shrimp w/pink sauce-excellent!) All others loved their too - then topped off with crunchy cannoli and the BEST ever tiramasu (have loved it for yrs- not even those in Italy can top it!) Service from Joseph top notch and owner, Lisa, so friendly & accommodating. Thanks to great chef too, who I understand, has been there over many years. We went back to Dantes a few weeks ago with two other couples. We have not been back since there was a change in ownership. The food was outstanding. All six of us raved about our appetizers and entrees. The portions are generous and we all took home our leftovers: enough for another meal. The tomato sauce is outstanding. We all started with either a zuppa de clams or mussels which was wonderful. Even the dessert of blueberry cake and icecream was fresh and a very generous portion. We loved the food so much that we are bringing four more friends there this weekend. read more
