We got there at 9:50 and we left around 11:30. Just standing in line. They are carry out only. Having said that everything I got (and I "had" to order most of the vegan choices to justify standing in line for so long. Ha!) was/is amazing! We got the pizza roll (sooo good!), raspberry donuts, chai sugar cookies, chocolate chip espresso muffins, blueberry raspberry buns and mushroom soup. My wife and I have been coming here for many years. We drive the 55 miles here drooling all the way. We have never had a bad meal here. We absolutely love the variety of soups and Mac & cheese choices. And for dessert they always have a wide variety of cookies, muffins and scones. Over the years I've tried all their soups and they are pretty good but I prefer my own. I've tried all their mac & cheese and they're delish, and I prefer their's. The school cafeteria mac is my favorite, chipotle is second. The extra crunchy concentrated corners of the pan are my favorite. If they have cheese scones, don't hesitate to get one. I was pleased overall with my take and run lunch experience at Grateful Bread... though I expected more bread and less waiting in line. I think I spent 10 minutes waiting while the sole employee at the counter tried to keep up with a line that stretched out the door. Seemed odd for 1:30pm, but that's also what kept me waiting. Obviously this is something worth waiting for (and it was a miracle I even had cash to begin with - note it's only that or check). Still, the soup was good and the cheese croissant was amazing (should have gotten 2 of those). Note that I couldn't figure out that the 8.5x11" collage posters on the chalkboard were the soups of the day also... Too much other stuff to look at I guess, and kind of panicked and ordered the first one I could read (Mexican lentil). I was in a huge hurry, so instead of delicately dipping and savoring the harmony of scone-in-soup action, I hurriedly stuffed the scone into my maw while driving. The soup, however, taunted me from the passenger seat in its brown paper sack prison. So at the next red light, I reached over and set it free... Too bad for me I forgot two important things. A: what I was driving (Subaru with a much too sporty suspension) and B: soup, right from the pot to a Styrofoam container with lid, is hot. So A + B almost immediately summed up to be spillage and an almost burnt tongue. I quickly put the lid (and masking tape that proved to be a lifesaver) back on top of the scalding brew as a raced towards my destination. About 1.5 hrs later, I finally had a chance to eat the soup and what do you know, it was still warm. Bravo Grateful Bread. I'll be back. read more

My then girlfriend introduced me to them and their cheese scones and I've been hooked ever since. Even now, my wife won't share a scone with me unless she's too full to eat any more. Today's menu (from their Facebook page): SOUPS - roasted celery and fennel middle eastern lentil with noodles (vegan) moroccan tomato (vegan) BOWLS - tikka masala rice bowl(vegan) chipotle mac and cheese blue cheese mac and cheese greek mac and cheese COOKIES - big daddy chocolate chip(vegan) ranger SCONES - chocolate chocolate chip candied ginger classic cheddar On today's trip I had the Greek mac & cheese with a chocolate chocolate chip candied ginger scone. My wife had the tikka masala rice bowl and a classic cheddar scone. (We usually share a little of everything we order. Except for the scones.) The mac & cheese was amazing. It wasn't overly cheesy but it did have a bunch of Greek veggies and tomatoes. (I really wish I had paid better attention to the ingredients they listed on the menu page.) It was served, as usual, heaped and overflowing out of the bowl. The tikka masala rice was great and it had quite a kick to it. It was like Indian restaurant quality; not bad for a little hole in the wall! The smart-alek in me says it needed chicken; it had chick peas, so I guess that's close enough. The scones were, as always, fantastic. Her cheddar scone was closer to a side dish, whereas my scone (chocolate with chocolate chips melted inside and candied ginger sprinkled on the outside) was more like dessert. They are the single most addictive items they make. Going here and not getting a scone is... just plain wrong. For dessert (like we really needed dessert after those huge portions) we got a ranger cookie. This thing is as big around as a large saucer and at least 3/4" thick. As for taste... it's tough for me to describe; kinda like an oatmeal cookie with corn flakes and coconut, but I don't recall seeing oats in the ingredients. Regardless, it tastes great. If you ever want lunch and you're feeling quirky, swing by Grateful Bread/Freakbeat Vegetarian. I have never had a bad meal there. Just remember these three things: 1. They aren't open on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. 2. When a menu item sells out, it's gone. Try to get there as close to 11:00 as possible. (We got there at 11:30 and the line was out the door.) 3. Bring cash. They don't take cards. Support your local businesses. Eat here. They have Moroccan Tomato Soup, Chipotle Potato Soup, Soul of Zorba Mac and Cheese, Chipotle Mac and Cheese, Italian Stuffed and baked Polenta, and Indian red lentil soup to name a few. I got to try the Baby Bella Mac and Cheese, it was really gooood! It had mushrooms, Gouda cheese, bread crumbs, thyme.. you just have to try it. I've tried to make it to this place a few times but have been deterred because of the time or weather restraints. Yes, the line was long and took awhile, but it was beyond worth it. This place has excellent soup, baked goods, mac and cheese and atmosphere. I would give them five stars if it weren't for their erratic hours which are terrible. They are often closed for weeks at a time and even when they are not on vacation the store is only open 4 days a week for 4 hours a day at most. It can be very frustrating to have such a good soup place available that is, due to the hours, never actually available. I can't count how many times I have went to get soup for myself or a sick friend only to find out that they were inexplicably closed during their "regular hours." There's a certain type of person who will go to Grateful Bread. As my dad says, "I'm not going to that hippie place!" It is that. Hippie-Dippie, eclectic and YUMMY VEGAN! An explosion of 1970's style and 2000's flavors. Yep, it's kitchy and weird in here. You'll eat among troll dolls, ironic signage (for example the street sign says SORRY, WE'RE OPEN or YES, WE'RE CLOSED, (this humor is lost on certain hungry types.) pictures of Robert Smith from the Cure and Grateful Dead stuff, but let's not focus on that only. The food here is very delicious. I swear, Meat-Eaters, give it a try! Time to order! The soup Nazi (Seinfeld reference) will take your order from behind his cluttered counter. Okay, he's no Nazi, and he is not rude or condescending however he is funny. In all the years I have been to GB he hasn't made conversation or looked happy to see us, despite the fact we're regulars. He is like the guy who should be backpacking across Europe but somehow got lost inside Grateful Bread and is serving the food. Someone once told me he was the original Hipster of Lincoln. So, come and get an autograph! Okay, now onto the issue at hand. The food. The food is good. Delicious in fact. The food is delicious, served in little paper cups and is often gone by the time I arrive. There's something frustrating/annoying/disappointing about standing in line and the little sign being ripped down off the menu board right when I'm about to order. (This means it's GONE.) You better pray that your favorite soup, pasta or macaroni is still available because once it's gone, it's gone. They've added a huge variety of really 'Artisan' sodas behind the counter which are made with real sugar and are vintage cool and delicious. The Mac N Goats Cheese is to DIE for. I remember it to cost around $7 + And the soups are $6.50 ish and don't come with free bread. I believe it's $1 for bread or a scone. (Bread used to come free with the soup, but that was years ago and when Mr. Hipster still was in a good mood I guess.) Oh and the COOKIES! Huge and delicious! Again, not everything will always be there when you want it. But since you can't really make a mistake on the baked goods, just order anything you see. It's kind of weird that they don't accept credit cards. I mean, come on, this is 2015. Even a tiny little town in Washington accepts credit cards. Get with the times guys! I think they accept personal checks if you're one of those folks more in the Senior Citizen category. Overall the food is yummy and vegan. No guilt! The prices are a bit on the higher side. Soup and pasta is served in paper cups whether you're eating in or taking it away. Kind of a bummer because if I want to eat in I always think of soup being in a real bowl. I know, I'm sounding whiney. I think the overall ambiance is discouraging and too Hippie-Dippie as my dad says but the food is good enough I'll get it and take it to go. The thing is, I'd go here 50X more if they accepted credit cards. I literally have cash as often as I have a good hair day, which is almost never. This place is run by a family, the hours are here or there (like them on FB to know the menu of the day and if they are open), the space is small, hot in summer and they only take cash or checks but it's worth any hassle it ever brings. One of the very best places to eat in Lincoln! I truly hope that you will stop in if they are open when you are in town. You'll be greeted by a sign that reads "sorry we're open" followed by an eclectic, bright and colorful array of vintage album covers, posters & knicka knacka bricka bracka. I took home a delicious loaf of Ethiopian bread and it was gone by the end of the day...so good. My daughter and I enjoy the Moroccan tomato soup but there is a rotating variety of vegan and vegetarian options that are all worth a try. There is also a daily selection of homemade mac & cheese. I love to add siracha to mine! I have a dream that one day they will again offer their homemade cinnamon rolls... Truly the very best cinnamon roll in the entire world. It sits in an unassuming little strip mall on 17th Street near Russ's Market. Free on street parking with more around back. Did I already say yum? Because YUM! Food: Grateful Bread has a rotating menu which is released via Facebook daily. Various vegetarian soups and mac'n cheese are offered and often run out by mid-afternoon depending on traffic. Hoppin' John and some polenta dishes make their way on the menu occasionally as well. While some other reviewers mentioned limited selection as a negative, these dishes are individually made. Like small batches of deliciousness you have to work to enjoy. As a failed cook of many many vegetarian dishes, I have a suspicion that to make so many successful dishes, it takes A LOT OF WORK and complicated recipes. That being said, I appreciate even having the opportunity to have them offered in a local restaurant. Saltines and hot sauce are at each table! Price: this place is CASH or CHECK only. Plan accordingly. The prices range from $1.25 for the various scones, cookies and other baked goods to about $7 for soup and pasta dishes. I had the South American vegetable soup, garlic mac and cheese and a cheese scone. Everything was hearty and filling and tasted great! If I could have tried some of everything on the menu, I would have. The decor is also something to take note of. It's very quirky and funky and artsy and gives off a definite vibe.
