I'm in town for work and I guess I'm homesick or something and wanted Vietnamese banh mi. I never want Vietnamese sandwiches when I'm home but when I'm thousands of miles away, it's a treat. I saw the yellow Cafe Du Monde coffee cans everywhere as soon as I walked in and smiled. I've been looking at that yellow can since 1981 and telling my dad that I'll go there someday -- I still haven't gone but the memories that the yellow can invokes is quite heartwarming. I had the #20 pork belly sandwich. I mean, of course, I had the pork belly sandwich! You may have told your friends and family, and maybe even coworkers, that you had a Vietnamese sandwich but you actually haven't had THE Vietnamese sandwich until you've the pork belly sandwich. This isn't the kind of sandwich you normally get at tourist stalls in Vietnam. The pork belly sandwich is usually made by some auntie who cares enough about your existence to make you that sandwich at home. The sandwich is flavorful and comes with a crapload of pickled daikon and carrots. Cucumbers and Jalapenos are a plus. If anyone tries to sell you a Vietnamese sandwich without cucumbers, get the FUCK OUT OF THERE. I thought the garlic mayo was a bit salty and overpowering, but that's just me. Oh, the fried eggs is a big fucking plus. I had the Vietnamese iced coffee with boba. The coffee is very good, and I like that they didn't try to cut the condensed milk with heavy cream etc. Service was quick and very professional. I asked a dumb question about raw onions and they took the time to assure me that there won't be any raw onions. That's another thing, if anyone tries to put raw onions in a Vietnamese sandwich, get the FUCK OUT OF THERE!!! This little cafe offers fantastic fusion Korean/Thai sandwiches. We stopped for a late lunch. You order at the counter and you can take to go or sit at one of their tables. The clerks are efficient and quick. They don't waste time with pleasantries. The menu offers about 20 sandwich options, which can be served on bread, wrap or lettuce wraps. Food comes out quickly. First, the bread is phenomenal - chewy rolls with a crunchy crust. I could make a meal on the rolls. I had the Korean Bbq. The bbq is smothered in a spicy mayo and topped with fresh Asian veggies. This sandwich is delicious, but spicy HOT! I had to take a break eating it because it was so hot. I loved it. My husband had the Spicy Thai sandwich with chicken. The sandwich is mildly spicy and packed with chicken and marinated Asian veggies. This is one on their most popular sandwiches. The dining area is not fancy, but clean and utilitarian. Did not expect such great Bahn mi while I was traveling out here! I was impressed. The quality was great and the baguette was just right. Not too fluffy but not too hard. Some places make your mouth hurt because it's so hard and crunchy but not here. The Thai chicken one with cilantro was surprisingly pretty spicy so be aware. Fresh and pickled veg, delicious meats, peppers. Don't forget the fresh and crumbly baguette! We decided to stop by Banhwich Cafe for a quick sandwich lunch during a day exploring Lincoln. Cold Cut Combo and Pâté ($7.76) - Firstly, the baguette has a nice crispy flaky skin exterior and soft and chewy interior. Unlike some other places, the baguette isn't baked until hard. While some of the skin flakes off as you eat, it doesn't easily crumble into millions of pieces. On the interior, Banhwich cafe adds quite a bit of meat. Pickled veggies, including carrot and daikon, add crunch and tangy vinegar notes to the sandwich. There's additional cucumber, deseeded jalapeno ribs, which is fresh and not too spicy, and cilantro to add more herbal notes. A rich pate is spread on the bread to prevent the veggies and meat from getting the bread soggy. It also adds a great savory, salty umami to the sandwich. (4/5) Pork Belly ($8.90) - The only difference here is the meat included and the fact the sandwich is served warm instead of lukewarm. The pork belly is warm and fatty, with a taste that's a little sweet, a little savory, quite a bit tangy, with a definite soy flavor. I found it to be a bit too saucy, with the sauce soaking into the bread and making it a bit soggy. The meat and veggies are both quite sour and the two added together made it just a bit too tangy for me. However, the pork belly is tender and juicy with the cubes just the right size to have in a big mouthful (3/5) Of note, there are a few awards regarding their curry in a curry competition. They offer a masaman curry banh mi on the menu and I regret not seeing it until after I ordered. That's certainly a reason to come back in the future! It also didn't maintain the chewy texture. Within minutes the boba is stiffer. My cousin got a banh mi and said the bread was more on the stiff/stale side as opposed to the good crunchy bread with soft inside of typically viet banh mi bread. Restaurants in the time of COVID are just weird. It's hard to get the "feel" of what a place might really be like. Currently they are open for takeout only. The restaurant is basically blocked off by tables so you can only place your order and wait. There are no chairs to sit on while waiting and you cannot use the bathroom. I think this is standard practice in many places right now. I ordered two grilled pork Banh Mi. The woman that took my order seemed a bit annoyed that I had interrupted her conversation. There were 4-5 people working which I thought was strange. Maybe they get really busy. I was the only one there. I may have asked too many questions.
