This very well could be the most delicious food in Omaha. I was blown away! My husband got the pork chop and I got the catfish (which was perfect with hot sauce) and both were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The sides were phenomenal too. I'm really picky about Mac n cheese, but I could eat theirs for days. And my husband doesn't like green beans, but he stole a bunch off my plate because they were so good. I happily ate way too much, and I can't wait to go back. Still a little confused about the pricing by weight system, but what we got was well worth the price. The lady behind the counter was so nice, and you could tell the regulars love her. Seating was limited, but it was perfect for 2 to dine in. And the farmhouse decor was cozy. As a southerner living in the Midwest, one of the things I've noticed they have missed the mark on is some QUALITY soul food. I had high hopes for this place as it was mentioned on the news. When I arrived, I was given a sample of a chicken wing which was pretty awesome... and for what it's worth it was great! The problem I had were the prices, you pay by weight and I ended up paying $40!! That's insane, I understand businesses have to run to make a profit, but there's also a balance of keeping your patrons too. Again, for Midwest standard it is one of the better soul food places I've come across. But doubt I'll come again as the prices aren't reasonable. read more

First of all I want to say this place is not located on south 16th street at all. It's actually on the corner of 40th and Ames. Secondly this place is cafeteria style and what you'll pay depends on the weight not the items. They have daily specials as well. I ordered the catfish fillet which they fry fresh ( definitely a plus for me, who doesn't love fresh food.) as well as the red beans and rice and some good ol collard greens. They had other options like cheesy broccoli, cabbage, mashed potatoes and chicken wings (which I did get one and were so good.) everything I ordered was really good. Please be aware that your food will be weighed by the lb so keep an open mind about what your total will be but definitely so worth it. 8/10 I recommend. read more

Highly recommend this place. I went in with a group and we ordered a variety of food to share and I think that is the move. You can tell there is a lot of love in the cooking and everything was seasoned perfectly and exploding with flavor. The yams were tender and sweet and complimented the oxtail. And the oxtail was incredible. Unctious, buttery with a deep beef flavor and a texture that melts in your mouth. Unreal. I also got to try the fried catfish which was light and flaky and fried to perfection. The salmon stole the show. Perfectly cooked and not at all dry, it is topped with shrimp and a creamy, cheesy herbed, bechamel sauce. Could not stop eating eat. I sampled my friend's chicken lasagna and it was better than my mom's. Loved that we got to try some complimentary fried chicken because it's worth the trip by itself. You can tell they season the chicken and the breading. Crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. Super nice folks running the place as well. Please go show them some love! read more

We had meant to take pictures of the smorgasbord that we got before we tucked in but everything looked so mouth watering that we didn't pause to snap any pics. Next time we'll make sure to! Everyone who works here was extremely friendly and welcoming. As our first time trying this place, I was offered samples and ended up getting a little bit of everything. This was definitely the right move!!! They're the same restaurant as the previously listed location on 16th St. but now located on the corner of Ames and 40th Ave. The new restaurant is decorated beautifully and there is a lot of love that has been put into the place. They do buffet-style where they weigh your food at the end before you get your total. So, that's pretty cool for when you know exactly what you want. We got the catfish filets (takes ~10 mins to get since it's cooked to order), fried chicken, shrimp, okra rice, mashed potatoes & gravy, sweet potato soufflé, black eyed peas, mac n cheese, and the greens. Absolutely delicious. I've been craving authentic southern soul food lately and decided to give this spot a try. Let's just say I wasn't disappointed. Everything is fried fresh to order so it comes out super hot which I love. The weight system for price was a bit confusing to me at first but I understand it more now. I ordered 1 Lb catfish fillet with a side of candied yams and Mac and cheese and cornbread. After tax my total was $28. It was a very large meal I might add, next time I will definitely lessen my portion sizes but the meal was scrumptious none the less and everything I was hoping for. Not to mention the wonderful hospitality I was greeted with immediately upon arrival. Truely a Gem for northern Omaha! The atmosphere of this restaurant is what first drew me in. Cute, clean, and somewhere I'd want to sit down and eat at. Then I tried the food... it reminded me of my grandmothers cooking in all of the best ways. We tried the fried chicken, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, greens, cheesy broccoli bake, and corn bread muffins. Everything was delicious. But the meats were especially impressive. I reaalllyyy want to give this place higher than 3 stars because of the ambience and the service. The owners were so welcoming and friendly! The food is also really good. What reduced my enthusiasm is that it's ridiculously expensive. I'm from the South, and so is the owner, and it has a vibe of a "meat and 3" restaurant that are found everywhere in Alabama and Georgia. However, the major difference is that those places charge a flat rate per plate. This place charges $11.99 per pound (charge is by weight) which is absurd. My husband and I both got chicken wings, and 3 sides (small scoops each; 2 plates total) along with some peach cobbler and it ended up being $67!! I thought maybe it was just because we had gotten so much but the lady behind us got the catfish and 2 sides and hers was $35. This seems like an unsustainable business plan; the restaurant's not located in a wealthy part of town which will require customers to come from outside the area (meaning they need a strong marketing plan to get customers over there) and it's still insanely unaffordable for the amount of food we ended up with. I won't be back mostly because it's too expensive; also, the food definitely is homemade and good but still tasted different from how it's supposed to taste (for example, the greens were very vinegary which isn't typically how they should taste). I know how to cook Southern food to taste the way it should, which doesn't warrant me spending that kind of money...even though I'd like to support them :-/. I urge the owners to change to a flat rate and do a standard "meat and 3" setup which would still be very unique for Omaha residents and likely pull a lot of customers read more
