I grew up in the bay area on San Francisco Sourdough in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It was the best you could get. I went away for 20 years and returned to my beloved San Francisco, only to find the bakeries that had the best sourdough are now gone. Boudini's is the big name now but it is a far cry from the sourdough I grew up on. Even the extra sour is not close. I was sad for years thinking great sourdough was just a sweet memory. But Saturday, I made my way to Grateful bread and bought on of their loafs of sourdough. I got home and thought I would try a taste of it. OMG! My Genuine San Francisco sourdough is back !!! I am so happy now. I was just going to have one slice but I have already had 5 slices and it isnt even meal time yet. It takes all my strength to hold back from getting piece number 6. I want to say thank you Grateful Bread for making a product like it used to be made. No short cuts or inferior product to cut costs, just good honest bread. Also got your white bread and hamburger buns, so very good! Next time I will buy other breads to that were recommended by the great people waiting outside with me. Definitely want to try the Rosemary sea salt sourdough and the almond croissants, they say are to die for. I have enjoyed the novelty of finding new bread specials here each week. The sourdough, ciabatta, and bagel varieties have all been delicious. I appreciate their care for quality ingredients. The pastries, however, have been consistently underwhelming. Everything from the grateful buns to the cookies to the cinnamon rolls have been dry and stale every time, almost comically so for the high price paid. The quality control for the pastries needs to improve. I also think they should post prices for transparency, as the sticker shock at check-out is real. Grateful Bread typically caters to high end restaurants and retailers, yet they open their doors on Saturdays 10am-2pm to let the rest of us get stuff we can eat at home. Its entertaining to listen to the other bread lovers and how they savor this bread. Some (most) buy in bulk and freeze things. Some splurge and consume within a day or two. The point is Grateful Bread uses the best ingredients to produce high quality baked products. While I am a relatively newcomer, my favorites have been the sourdough boutard and the croissants. Bought two different types of bread to try: the French baguette and Jalapeño cheese batard. Not impressed. Both were chewy and old. It felt as if they were left overs from prior days. I also purchased their babka roll. That was cold to touch and came straight out from the fridge not the oven. Wanted to try more pastries but their pastries didn't look fresh or inviting enough for me to spend about $6.00 each of them. Some pastries like their apple turnovers or plain croissants for example are selling at almost $6.00 each and it's overpriced for what it's worth. I walked out not impressed at this place. Open on Saturday only 10-2pm. Sign up for their weekly email, they list special menu with pastry of the week. There's usually a dmv style waiting line at 10am. They use a solid pine East Tyrolean stone mill from Austria at a speed of 200 lbs FPH (flour per hour). They don't use yeast accelerants, dough conditioners, preservatives, artificial flavors or colors, stabilizers, "enhancers", "improvers" or any additives to cut corners. GBC develop their own starters, maintaining many different starters on any given day, including our 23-year-old natural wild yeast sourdough starter. Love this place. You get your number outside the facility and wait until you are called. You choose the breads or desserts you want before entering. There is a bit of a wait but they have the system down to a science with numbers and lines and lots of people there working very hard but with smiles on their faces. This place is extremely busy and for good reason. They only use the best of incredients. Everything we tried today for the first time was great. The croissants (ham and turkey)were my favorite and by far the best croissants I've ever had anywhere of all time! Also the double chocolate cookie was hands down the best of all time in the cookie category for me! I like the tie dye signs and there's just an overall happy feel inside and outside the building. Everything we've tried from Grateful Bread has been above and beyond amazing. Our recent trip yielded a chocolate croissant-type roll, jalapeño bread and a loaf of sourdough rosemary bread. The chocolate roll was the perfect amount of chocolate and pastry. I pulled each layer off and ate it individually. The jalapeño bread was hearty and spicy; perfect for dipping into lentil soup. And the rosemary bread... Wow! Hearty, but not heavy. Great structure and consistency. Looking forward to going back soon! read more

Amazing high quality breads and pastries!! My only regret is I live so far away in Aurora but I'll just have to plan more Saturday morning drives to Golden now that I stumbled on this gem. So glad Jeff and Kathy's Grateful Bread is still open to feed their lucky patrons on Saturday mornings. Whether you're looking for fabulous sour dough bread, with tender crumb and chewy crusts or a yeast raised bread, they're all delicious! We tried the Emmer Batard, Jalapeño Cheddar and a plain SD Batard. The Jalapeño Cheddar pretzels are a mini twist on the the loaf. Orange glazed scones and both Almond & Chocolate Croissants will satisfy any sweet tooth. While they're only open to the retail public on Saturdays from 10-2, it's worth the trip. Well staffed to keep the customers moving along at a nice pace. Kudos to the bakers producing these amazing breads for us each week. Initial reactions: - This is an older people's bakery. Customers were mostly older adults. - Customers seemed to all be regulars. - If you're awkward like me and don't like situations where you feel out of place, maybe avoid. They have a older system where you take a number (like from a deli counter) and a sheet of paper to indicate your order (place quantity next to each item). Then you wait around outside in the parking lot until your number is called and/or written on the white board. Probably 40-50 numbers were picked before they opened at 10, so get there early. They have an 'on deck' area for the next numbers, but they don't tell you if you're supposed to wait there until they say go in or just go in when someone comes out, so I stood there awkwardly and uncomfortably. They indicate what is out of stock on the white board. Tough for a newbie to come up with an order without being able to see the items or see the prices. I'd guess the average person doesn't know the difference between batards and boules (fyi- loaves, they're both loaves). Hard to tell who was working and could answer questions so I just had to guess what I might want. - They use email as most bakeries use Instagram stories - sending an email in advance of the specials with pictures and sending an email during the day when there's no line and what's left. Probably caters better to the older crowd. Reviews: - Their name is Grateful BREAD, not Grateful Bread & Pastries, which aligns with my review. The breads were good, the pastries were not. - Bagels, pretzels, and loaves were delicious and cooked very well. - Croissants were very bready and not flakey with buttery layers. Cinnamon rolls were hard and dry, almost stale. Babka roll was dry and crusty. Their pastries all LOOK delicious, but I wouldn't recommend them. The chocolate cookie was okay. - I received each item I ordered in an individual bag, which seems wasteful. There's got to be a better packaging option. I did bring my own bag to contain all the small bags. - This was PRICEY. I saw the prices of the pastries on the counter inside, but not for the breads or bagels. Didn't receive an itemized receipt, so I'm still not sure how much everything cost. However, they did not ask for tips or spin a screen around for me to select/sign or anything, so hopefully the price means they're paying their employees fairly. I do appreciate that they open at 10am, a little later than most, and seem to have larger quantities of each item compared to other bakeries. If you're not an early bird, or want to get in a hike before going to a bakery this is your place. You can smell the bread before you even pull into to the parking lot. It was magical! Our friends who live there said it was an absolutely must visit. After our hike nearby, we stopped in for one of everything (unintentionally) and so worth it! The croissant and cinnamon rolls were incredible, but definitely grab a loaf of bread. I think my favorite was the jalapeno cheddar loaf. When we visit our friends again, we will definitely be making a trip out to get loaded up for the weekend. I like to consider myself somewhat of a bread connoisseur. I can tell you where to get the best (imho) garlic rolls, pitas, French, Cuban, or rye bread to name a few across the country. I had the pleasure of being at the right place and the right time in Denver. This place is ONLY open on Saturdays for a few hours. They sell mostly wholesale during the week. We found out about it when we loved the bread at a local restaurant in Boulder. Grateful Bread (such a cute name) is located in a commercial warehouse area in Golden. We got there around 11:30am with no line. So many breads to choose from, ancient grains to sourdough to rye to soft pretzels and everything in between. Everything that we tried was phenomenal. I especially liked the caraway pretzel roll. They also have sweet things, but we stuck with the savory carbs. Oh and grits too! The employees were super nice and helpful (and patient) They talked about how they mill their own grains?! That's so next level. read more

They have now opened their doors to the public every Saturday from 10am-2:30pm. My husband arrived at 10:04am and there was already a line out the door about 25 people deep. Since it took us 40 minutes to get to the front of the line we decided we better stock up like everyone else (people were leaving with 2-3 grocery totes FULL of bread). The average age of the customers was 65+ (no exaggeration) and I was one of only two non-white people out of the 75 or so people we saw waiting in line. Just be prepared to feel like you're smack in the middle of Vermont or something. Our order was as follows: Levain White Sourdough Country Batard Jalepeno Tillamook Cheddar Batard 2 hoagie rolls 1 chocolate almond croissant 1 pretzel All of this came to about $30 which is a great deal. These loaves of bread are huge. My husband and I quickly ate our way through the pretzel on the way home- we couldn't wait, the car was hotboxed with the smell of freshly baked bread. When we got home we realized they forgot to put the Levain in the bag, so we drove back to Golden, told them what happened and they replaced it pronto. Anyway, I went through half the Jalepeno Cheddar loaf within 6 hours of it landing on our counter (it was still warm when we bought it!). We made French Onion soup for dinner so we could use the Country Batard for the gruyere croutons. We ate the chocolate almond croissant while waiting for our soup. This morning I had bread and butter for breakfast. This afternoon we made grilled BLTs. For dinner we ate homemade minestrone with hunks of bread on the side. Just now I ate toast and jam for dessert. Thank god I'm not gluten intolerant. I think I've eaten more bread in the last 40 hours than I have in the last 6 months combined. It is SO SO good. Go. I have a brand new favorite item to rave about this morning...the latest offering from the bakers is a perfect lemon danish. Other favorites of mine are the babka loaf (amazing, best in class), levain boule (which makes me feel virtuous), quinoa bread (makes a fantastic sandwich bread) and country sourdough boule. The sourdough hits the right balance of sour, but not too sour. They accomplish this by allowing the dough to have extra long proofing times in climate controlled proofing boxes. My husband loves the jalapeño Tillamook cheese buns...they add even more flavor to your favorite veggie, chicken, salmon or beef burger. I hesitate to write this review because as one of the very first customers, I create more competition in the line on Saturday mornings! LOL! This bread company was the leading wholesale supplier to restaurants in Denver but with Covid-19, the Saturday retail operation kept the business alive and thriving. The owners have done an amazing job of responding to customer's desires for safety during Covid and for relief from standing in line outside by creating a mechanism to order online with later pickup. You can still go by on Saturday morning, stand in line and get your baked goods if you choose, which is a nice option. This bakery takes pride in using the best ingredients available, to the point of purchasing a mill from a company in Europe and having it shipped to the bakery and assembled in an enclosed room used just for milling grains, such as blue corn for grits and other specialty grains. How do I give this place 15 out of 5 stars? OMG this is the Eve to my "no carbs" Adam, but I just can't help it, their bread is SO GOOD. I drive from Denver to Golden just to stand in line. They say time is money but man, when you get their bread into your mouth all that waiting time is SO WORTH IT. Where do I begin with my favourites? The chocolate almond croissant... the jalapeño cheese pretzels; the lavender sourdough; smoked peat barley; pumpernickel; levain; olive... I think I might just list off everything from their menu. I can literally be Bubba to Bubba Gump about their bread. The only thing I hate is that when I'm out of bread, I'm like WHERE CAN I GET MORE!? and have to wait until Saturday. I've never been addicted to anything, but this is crack. So now I just buy a ton of bread and leave it in my freezer, to feed my addiction when for some reason I've run out. Omg this bread is amazing. Came late on a Saturday afternoon so they were out of a few things but I didn't have to wait in line. They took social distancing seriously, which I appreciate. Go to their website and sign up for their newsletter so you can know what special breads will be available on the coming Saturday. If you get there early, plan to wait in line with a bunch of people who are usually pretty cool. If you get there later, plan to have a reduced selection, because they do sell out of things. If you get there near closing time, don't be surprised if they've already closed for the day because they've sold out of everything! Came during Saturday bakery time. The lines was pretty built up by the time we got there (10:04 - 4 minutes after doors open). It took us about 40 min to get through the line and leave with our bread. The jalapeno tillamook was good and we grabbed a few loaves of that. My favorite was the babka and sticky buns. Have you ever savored a slice of bread at a local restaurant? It's highly likely that it came from Grateful Bread. Located in Golden, they stock an impressive list of local restaurants. Go ahead and take a moment to survey their website. I was super excited when I discovered they would be be at the Larimer Square's Secret Garden over the summer. I purchased a Red Quinoa Boule and, try as I must, it didn't last very long. It was around that time that I was researching them on their website and discovered they have a retail day a few days out of the year. I bookmarked November 1 and set my calendar notification for 24 hours. I was pumped and wanted to plan accordingly. My girlfriend and I arrived their right before the doors open and there was a line of about 25-30 only. If you were fortunate enough to place an online order for pickup, you could skip this line. This meant that I was constantly teased by a small stream of bread toting people. Nearly every single bread was available to the walk-ups. We ordered the levain, red quinoa loaf (boule only available at the markets), lavender sourdough, a sticky bun and bretzel with caraway. Their products are amazing and delightful and way too tempting for someone who is slightly allergic to wheat products. We enjoyed the sticky bun first. I can best describe as a delicious triple layer french toast. It's large enough to share. The bretzel reminded me of Switzerland's bretzels, those delightful bready packable things. Anyway, I won't bore you with the details, but I suggest getting to know Grateful Bread better if you haven't already. read more

I felt a little rushed cuz there were so many people there.
