Love the decently large playground structures (1 for younger, other for older kids) and large parking lot. There are some Unfortunately the swings are tied up prolly because of COVID. It looks like there's a splash pad too but don't know when that will turn on. It's fun that you can see many of the animals from the barnyard zoo from the park too. The public restrooms were locked. A few debit cards in the same month mistakenly were forgetten at the ticket booth for the petting zoo. Watch your things there. This park has a collection of farm animals right smack in the middle of a residential area. In the park were also two playgrounds; one for small kids and one for big kids and a little league baseball field. The day we were there, Sunday. There was also a clown, a ice cream truck and a street vendor with a rolling cart. The vendor sold flavored ice cones and fresh corn on a stick. There was so much going on at the park. It put most parks to shame. One of the best Sunday's I have had in a long while was spent here. Plenty of parking. Trash cans everywhere. Two unisex bathrooms available to the public. Just a great park to take your family. Highest rating. Jealous I don't have a park like that in my neighborhood. read more

It's overpriced. $9 for entry, which is fine, you do it for your kid; but it's so small, you'll be out quickly; there's not much to do or see in there. Cashier sucks, not friendly or anything. If you ask questions; she'll tell you; just "read the signs" when you go in. Smh. The worst experience is the pony ride! $10, just a minute and a half. Two times around. I was shocked. Like wtf? My child just got on! I'm never spending $ here again. You're better off driving to Lakewood Equestrian Center. Pony rides for your kids are awesome. More animals. A good amount of play equipment and shade for the benches. It smells like barn animals though. That's because the Montebello barnyard is right here. Bathrooms have no soap and look like a prisoner's cell. The grounds and grass are well kept. The best part is that during summertime, there is a little mini splash pad and the Lakers ice cream truck comes by. read more

As I'm riding south along the Rio Hondo bike path, I come across a wood plank bridge that crosses into Grant Rea Sports Park. Score, another restroom stop along this bike path! The majority of the park is dedicated to baseball and softball fields. A batting cage. They even have a mini field for little leaguers, which is kinda cute. As I continued down the bike path, there looked to be a fairly large kids playground area. Lo and behold, I also saw the Montebello Barnyard Zoo. Looks to be a petting zoo filled with ponies and farm animals. Seems like an awesome setup for little kids. There are also emu and llamas! Very cool. There's several parking lots as well as street parking here. Seems like a great place to take your kids to, or to entertain the kid within you. (^_^) read more

Just came here yesterday for a childs bday party. Ive never been here before, it sounded cool and reading reviews made it sound awesome. Now my son didnt ride the train or visit the petting zoo, so i cant comment on that. All he did was play in the splash pad and play at the jungle gym. The splash pad is kinda cool,.not very big but fun and the kids loved it. My reason for the 2 stars is as follows. The bathrooms are disgusting, the park is dirty as hell and if you like a park filled with cholos/cholas with face, head and neck tattoos who give you the stink eye, this place is your cup of tea. I saw a total of 3 big seperate groups of people and they all consisted of the cream of the crop parolees who all made the wise life choice of inking themselves up from head to toe....lovely, huh? Theres alot of 4 and 5 star reviews here on Yelp so maybe i came during a bad time. So it was a cute park and MAYBE id come back if invited to another childs bday party, but if you wanna come here with your kids.....be prepared to explain to them what a meth lab is. read more

This review is for the party/picnic area & water playground: Restrooms are disgusting they have been for years!! Walk towards baseball field and you'll run into the decent restrooms. If the water is on please be careful. Kids will slip! It does get pretty packed on weekends so parking can be a problem especially if you're trying to get a spot by playground...A visit during the week is probably the best time. Remember when you first became aware of general geography? More accurately, I should probably ask whether you remember when you became aware of your own unawareness of general geography. Lest this review quickly devolve into a boring, dated, veiled dig at Donald Rumsfeld's famously contorted locution, I'll get to the point: Grant Rea Park is where I first became aware of my own unawareness. I generally have a good sense of direction, both of the cardinal directions and of landmarks, but when I began driving, I was terrified that I would never be able to learn Southern California's confusing geography and would constantly be taking the wrong freeway in the wrong direction. This lasted for all of a month-and-a-half, and I quickly became a pro at both freeways and surface-street alternatives to freeways. What does this all have to do with Grant Rea Park? A lot, actually. I spent a great deal of my childhood at my cousins' house, which is 0.81 miles from Grant Rea. We usually drove to Grant Rea from my cousins' house when we visited it, but we also saw the sign for Grant Rea's "barnyard zoo" on Beverly Boulevard on the way to my cousins' house. This led my young mind to conclude that there were two ways to get to Grant Rea Park. This might not seem significant, but you'd be surprised at how important little things like this are; because I realized we passed the park on the way to my cousins' house, I also realized that we could drive home from the park without first returning to my cousins' house. Again, not rocket science, but pretty impressive for a five-year-old. The park itself is all right. I've been to a bunch of picnics here, and there's generally a lot of space to run around. It was a popular jogging spot in the '80s, but I also remember people worrying about coming here alone because of supposed undesirables in the area. This might have been veiled racism, or it might have just been the gradual shift to hypervigilance that our society underwent in the late '80s and early '90s. One of my favorite parts about driving by the park no longer exists. Yes, the billboard on Beverly is still there in all its original-artwork grandeur, but there used to be this amazing shortcut under Beverly Boulevard that was replaced when that bridge was rebuilt a few years back. Before, driving south on Rea Drive, you used to be able to go under Beverly, on a curve, and turn right on Beverly to head east. This was a really good shortcut because people used to line up to turn left onto Beverly. My family's--or at least my mom's--general rule was that you always took the shortcut when traffic stopped before the turnoff. It was also cool because it seemed scary and dangerous under Beverly; here you were near wooden pilings--yes, Beverly Boulevard used to be held up by a wooden bridge--next to a concrete reservoir. It felt like the place where local street gangs (like in West Side Story) went to crack skulls. Well, they got rid of all that, but I still like to think back fondly on it. read more

I drive by this park at least once month, usually on the weekends and there is always so much going on. Baseball games. There are Montebello pony baseball banners all over the baseball area. Which is nice to see the city support all the activities that take place there. There's always bday parties going on in the picnic area. This is actually a pretty big park, with lots of things for kids to do here. The park is kept up pretty well. Havent seen anything wrong with it, although I hear the restrooms are awful. Reading other reviews on this park, makes me want to come back and do a little more exploring. read more

Visited the barnyard zoo yesterday. $5 per person is too much for what you receive. The animals are all locked up and just waiting for humans to come along and give them attention and food. The duck pond was filthy and with no water. Only saw three ducks and a few turtles. Should have asked for our money back! read more

I live 2 hours away but was in the area so I brought my son to the petting zoo. There was a preschool feild trip when I arrived. As I stood in line there was no acknowledgement of me by the guy who works there, or asking me to hold on. After 10 minutes of helping the school (which I did understand takes time) he finally helps me. I ask for 2 tix to the petting zoo & ask if we could have free food ($1.00) for having to wait so long. He claims he didn't see me & I wasn't in line (yet the school group all had grern t-shirts & we didn't). I then complained that he doesn't pay attention to his cust, which he replied "I have the right to refuse services & I'm refusing you services. Get off my property" They are extremely rude & insensitive to children. Do not give them your business. read more

I like how I can just jump my fence and I'm at the park lol. I grew up in this park. It's a pretty big park compared to other parks I have been to. The Rio Hondo bike path is nearby and the park has this field around there where it dips in, I think it's an awesome place to be at on a windy day to fly some kites. Grant Rea Park is a local park that I grew up visiting as a child and I continue going as a father. I bring my kids here now and they love it. The park has 5 baseball fields and a barn yard petting zoo with pony rides. They have a kid's playground at one end of the park and water playground area that they turn on during the summer. It is a really safe park because half of it is blocked by the San Gabriel River and the other half is a residential street. They offer some city sports for the kids here and they are pretty crowded when that is going. So reserve the party location that is conveniently located between the petting zoo and the playground early. They do allow you to BBQ and they have plenty of bathrooms available. read more

The idea of the petting Zoo is cute. It needs more up keep. The pond water is filthy looks nothing like the one on the yelp picture. Also next to the llamas they have a bird (Emu) the birds skull is showing. It's pretty concerning. Talk about major disappointment for children on a HOT HOT HOT Sunday afternoon!! You want to see dozens of disappointed children, you should've been there on Sunday, September 16th. My roommate paid $80+ to reserve a patio to host a baby shower for her sister this past weekend. We were due to arrive before 10am to claim the spot that she paid to reserve, otherwise, it's up for grabs. Yes, even with a reservation, you still need to be there to "claim" your spot or else it's up for grabs!! We arrived before 9am to start setting up. We hung streamers, banners, set up the centerpieces, inflated balloons, set up the sign in table and filled it with party favors. At 10am, the rest of set up crew arrived with foods, drinks and all the fixings. By 11am, guests started to arrive. We watched as other patios started to fill with their decorations, foods, drinks and guests. Children were dressed in their bathing suits and swimming trunks, ready for the water park to turn on at 11am per public posted signs and most likely their contracts. Needless to say, we waited and waited, noon rolled around, nothing. 1pm came and went, still nothing. Finally we went through the contract and called a number that directed us to the Montebello Police Station. According to the clerk, a park ranger was already on the way because another party (or two or three) had called. Park ranger arrives and told everyone that he can't or won't turn it on because the person that was in charge of it didn't do their job. Seriously??? You should've seen all the disappointment on all these children's faces!!!! It was heart wrenching!! I could understand if everyone was notified that the water park won't be turned on that day due to maintenance or some other lame excuse, but there were no indications that the park wasn't going to be operating that day. My roommate paid $80+ (because we weren't residents of Montebello) only to be disappointed. We even announced it on the invitations that there will be a water park for the children to play. If you like to take candy away from a small child, this is the best place that will teach you how!! read more

Played Little League baseball here at Grant Rea Park and at the baseball field at Montebello Park. This started in 1959. My team, the triple A Beavers, won the world series over the Tigers in 1959, Dave Avilla was the manager. Grant Rea park was also where I learned to fly my .049 powered model airplane. I still get dizzy thinking about spinning around in circles with the 15 foot control line! Never knew this park was named after a WWII pilot killed in action. read more

It's a big park, but I find that the parking needs to have more parking space. We only went there for a walk. Hardly any chairs, and tables. There is shade in the play structure, and they also have a water splash. $5 to enter the barn yard, didn't go in since we were able to see the animals from a distance. read more

I remembered I had attended a birthday party at Grant Rea Park a few years back and I remembered the park was pretty decent. I went to visit the location and I was appalled at what I saw. It was a Sunday, and there were many activiites going on at the park. There was no parking available, the park looked dirty, it was not the park I remembered.
