We fell in love with this place on our recent trip to Walla Walla. So much so that we had dinner there two nights in a row. There's really a grandma in the kitchen making delicious Mexican food. We shared the Ensalada de Salpicón - very fresh and delicious. My husband had the pork tacos both times and loved them. I had the beef Sopa and the fish taco, both were awesome! grandma can cook. i once walked into the restaurant w a friend an hour before closing when there were no other customers. we weren't even that hungry and ordered a huarache, two fish tacos (which are pretty good size), guacamole, and drinks (horchata/jarrito). the two of us ended up talking to the son, who runs it with his mother, and were told a great story about their sopes. Is zero stars a possibility? I was in charge of selecting our group's Monday dinner. Hopping onto Yelp I chose Grandma's Kitchen based on their great reviews. Noticing they didn't take reservations, I took special note of their Monday hours posted on Yelp. With it being a week night, as well as being a month earlier than the summer crowds, I felt confident it wouldn't be a problem. You can imagine our surprise when our group pulled up in front of the darkened restaurant and discovered it to be closed! The posting on their door indicates they are closed Mondays. OMG! Sunday evening, not that busy, the worst service and food I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. Had to ask for water 3 times. Was told, "there's 3 tables ahead of you." Looking around and there's 4 tables, 2 have eaten. 45 minutes into the wait, still no food. Everyone has eaten, 50 minutes later, still no food. 56 minutes, food arrived. No guacamole, we ordered nearly an hour ago. We have no avocados. Burrito is 70% mushy white rice, 20% shredded beef, 10%? Sorry, we will never come back. I love this place! Every bite was so flavorful. I had the Huarache with pork. The meat is slow cooked in some sort of citrus. The Abuela doing the cooking made the tortillas fresh. The server made the guacamole and the Abuela tasted it before it came out. Very clear she is proud of the food coming from her kitchen. The guacamole was outstanding! Read all the yelp reviews and was really looking forward to eating here. Came by on August 23 at 1130am and the place is not open. Sign on door says open at 11am. No other sign on the door to explain why they are closed, phone goes straight to voicemail with no greeting so you don't even know you are calling the restaurant. I liked the food here. I had ordered a filling (the one with cactus pear) and it was fantastic. Service was excellent. We reached there almost around the time of closing and we were not told to rush to finish. They served tortilla chips with salsa. They gave spicy salsa and it was damn spicy. We found ourselves without restaurant reservations on a Saturday night in Walla Walla so decided to try this place because they had availability. Mexican food is usually quick and this wasn't. I thought well maybe because it is cooked to order and the quality would be better but unfortunately it wasn't. All of the other reviews baffle me after eating here, must all be relatives. As the owner (I assume) was very attentive, professional and courteous I am afraid his cooking was less than poor. When he proceeded to start cooking our food (which you can watch) doesn't smell good, you may want to cancel your order, I just didn't have the guts to do it. My husband and I both ordered burritos, he the chicken, I the pork (after being told he was out of Beef). I wish I had taken pictures, the presentation was awful and was served on plastic plates, which creeped me out, I would rather have a new paper plate. He tried, I know he really tried, but I could barely find any pork in my burrito, lots of clumped rice, which says to me its not fresh and both burritos were very watery and very bland . I am moving to the area soon and really hope I can find some good Mexican food close to my home. read more

it is pretty unclear whether they have table service. we ordered at the counter (pork sope and chicken/elote huarache), paid and sat down. after a while we reminded one of the busboys about our drinks and he apologized. he fetched the drinks and then said "did anyone get you chips and salsa?" uh no, they didn't. so he got that for us quickly. the food came out after a while, very fresh and tasty. but I noticed about halfway through my food (my dad was almost finished) that they left the queso fresco off both of our dishes. not the end of the world but hello? cheese is the best part of everything. overall the food was fine, service was below average. We came here for the first time during our Christmas visit to Walla Walla, and we were highly impressed with both the service and the authentic food. The restaurant has a unique set-up where you pick a style (ex: burrito, taco, lots of other terms for traditional Mexican food) and a meat (ex: marinated pork, cactus). We were having problems selecting a filling, so the owner came over and explained each type in detail, including what region of Mexico the dish came from and where the Grandma learned the recipe. He then brought us three styles to sample. They were delicious, especially the pork, which was perfectly tender with a sweet flavor. Later, we mentioned that we'd heard great things about the tamales (which aren't physically on the menu yet), and we were rewarded with samples of a cheese/jalapeno tamale and a chicken/mole tamale. The outside coating of the tamale (okay, don't shoot me - I have no clue what the bread stuff is called) was the softest I've ever experienced. Absolutely delicious. The high quality of the food, overall reasonable prices and the true hospitality of the owner makes this place a winner in my book. read more

Excellent. Grandma's kitchen is hands down the most authentic Mexican food that you'll only find in San Antonio. Everything is fresh and homemade. Delicious! Service is kind, friendly, and attentive. Will go again and again. Really different and awesome. Desserts looked great but we were already quite full as we ordered the yummy Chorizo cheese dip appetizer as well as our meals! A friend recommended this place so we tried it out. we pretty much had the place to ourselves and was talking with owner?/waiter/cook. he was telling us that he was from the Yucatan area and the food was styled that way. Cool, we never had that style. we asked what, on the menu, was typical of that area. he recommended either the pork or cactus on an oblong fresh made tortilla with a habanero sauce, hold the beans. he stated that they detract from the other flavors. all I can say is... wow! Not the huge gut-bomb meal that leaves me feeling bloated. it was a very nice, light meal that left me very satisfied. read more
