Azteca has been a standby for us for years. I used to be a diehard El Charo fan until I was introduced to this gem. When we don't feel like driving to Mexicantown, Azteca is a no brainer. The food is always so fresh and delicious, the chips are warm, the salsa is the best I've ever had, and the margaritas (all of the cocktails we've had, really) are seriously top notch. Good thing G.A. isn't down in mexican town, it would put them all out of business. After going to Xochis last week and being disgusted I still had a craving for some decent mexican fare. Yelpers, you didn't let me down. We were seated promptly and brought chips and 2 dips,yummm. I ordered a margarita and lo and behold Icould taste the tequila and it was super good. The food here is consistently good. They have a white queso sauce that is excellent. They also have a ranch dipping sauce that comes with the chips and salsa which is also very good. I've been coming here for years and the staff is always super friendly and goes out of their way to make you happy. You can't beat the prices either. For some reason I didn't want to like this place. It's only a mile or so from my house. I'm a big fan of Mexicantown restaurants and haven't had great experience with anything local. This place changed my mind. My wife and I have gone twice in the last two weeks. We've had great service, and the food is quite fresh, tasty and overall very good. I ordered a pina colada yesterday and it was pretty lousy. It was more like a Pina Colada slushy. I won't be trying that again. Just had a terrible experience here. Arrived at 2:30 for an early Mother's Day dinner. Figured we would beat the crowds. Which we did. It was busy but we were seated immediately and there were at least half a dozen empty booths and tables around. Ordered our food at 2:45. And waited. And waited. Finished our drinks. Finished our chips and salsa. No one came by. Finally someone came over about 3:15 and asked if wanted more chips. Yes. Few minutes later more chips arrived. No salsa. No ask if we wanted more drinks. At 3:30 (45 minutes after ordering) someone came and told us it would be longer. She didn't speak English well and couldn't tell us just how much longer. My brother had to leave for a 4:00 appt so we needed to know. Few minutes later another waitress came over and said it would be a a few more minutes. We told her we needed exact amount of time or we were leaving. She came back a couple minutes later and said five minutes. We said "five minutes or we are leaving". My brother had already left. Right in the dot at five minutes (3:38, 53 minutes from order time)our food came. In the meantime both booths in either side of us are also asking where their food is and threatening to leave as well. Our food was cold to top it off. We ate quickly and then waited for our bill. Of course no one came so we went to the register. I told them I expected a discount to make up for the awful service, food and wait time. I am NOT one to EVER ask for a discount but I was furious at this point, and everyone around us was up in arms, asking where their food was and also complaining. Our bill was $52 and they offered $4 off!! I was insulted. Finally a manager came out and asked what I expected. I said half off. This was the worst dining experience I had in years. He was apologetic but blamed it being busy and a holiday. It was NOT all that busy and as we got out to the parking lot we realized it was more than half empty. I don't know what the issue was but this was my first time here and will certainly be my last!!! p.s. the booth next to us had a waitress that was so incredibly rude to them I was flabbergasted!!! She actually yelled at them when they were asking what the status of their food was. She then stormed off to get a manager who of course never came out to speak to them. read more

I have been coming here since it opened about 2 years ago. Before that I used to go to the Azteca in Madison Hts, which was by where I was working. I was so excited when they opened a location on the East side. A few of the past reviews mentioned some things, and actually they have been improved upon. They now have a liquor license. I had not been in a few months and in December we stopped in and I was able to have a beer with dinner. Also, they revamped the menu. The food is still the same as it always was, the recipes and common dishes are the same, but they simplified the menu. Not so many crazy combo choices, etc. Much easier to read and navigate now. As far as the decor, they seem to slowly make progress. The bar is not ply-wood anymore, they finished it and it looks decent. They have changed something pretty much each time I have been there. Whether its the paint on the walls, something being built, a wall being taken down...they are making efforts toward a really nice establishment. The food is always A+ . The Queso Fundito with Chorizo is heavenly. I have ordered this at almost every Mexican joint on the East side and no one gets it like this place. Another favorite of mine is the Chimichongas. The beef ones are awesome. I love the chips, salsa, and the guacamole. The only other Mexican place around that even compares (besides the ones that are ran by the same people..there are a few other locations) is Xochimilco in Detroit. read more

I absolutely love this place. I use to stay in Tennessee and they had a Mexican town there and the place was built out of two trailers. ( a little hole in a wall) but the food was so good. I came home to mich. and this was the only place that came close to what I was looking for un taste. Me and my boyfriend come to place every time. plus it helps that they server his favorite beer. I ordered the shrimp chim. and he ordered the steak. and we srt quiet eatting through the whole meal everytime. Authentic Mexican deliciousness! The first time I came to this place I was let down, because I was hoping for an American-style Mexican restaurant: lots of cheese. basic Mexican food. I'd never really had a more authentic Mexican meal before. I have grown to love this place. When we want a weekend treat, we come here! They start out with complimentary chips and salsa. Their mild salsa is my favorite, pretty heavy on the cilantro. Also they have a white sauce that's called Mexican ranch. It's so good! As for drinks, their Dos Equis on tap is never a letdown. They frost their mugs which is a big plus. I've never had one of their mixed drinks before, but I always see lots of people ordering margaritas. The menu is huge! I'm an enchilada person, so my favorite dish is the Super Enchiladas Rancheros. That's all you need to fill you up. Delcious! Their servers are always helpful and fast. Great place. One star is way too much. Wife and I were starving after running errands around the god awful area. This shit hole got almost 5 stars on Yelp, and it was close to where we were, so to it we went. Chips and salsa was ok then it was downhill from there. Ordered burritos w extra cheese melted on top. Sprinkled through out the menu was reference to nacho cheese on some items. I asked the waitress does "nacho" cheese mean like the orange crap stuff one would get at 7/11 nachos? She says, no it's no orange that's it's white cheese. We also ordered chorizo cueso app and when it comes, it's frickin cheap ass liquid nacho cheese, but it's white! They use cheap ass white 7/11 nacho cheese. Not the muenster or white shredded real stuff they use at the real Mexican restaurants. So our waitress comes back and we tell her this stuff sucks, please take I back, and is my burrito about to be covered in the very same shit.? Yes she says. My wife says no we are good. We are leaving. What do we owe you for the waters , chips and salsa? Got the hell out of that dump and headed to our usual place, Plaza Mexico on 9 and Kelly for the real deal. Why is there nothing other than Plaza Mexico on the east side. I have been coming to this most recent addition to the Azteca family since it opened. The staff are the most friendly people you could hope for and the food is always excellent. I eat here at least once a week and sometimes more. If you love Mexican cuisine and you want excellent service, wonderful food and a friendly atmosphere, this is the place you want to be. I see a bunch of negative reviews, and I wonder if these people know what Mexican food really is. As someone who grew up with authentic Mexican cuisine regularly because I have Mexican in my family, I feel I can speak better on it than someone whose sole experience was ChiChi's. A real Mexican food place should be judged on dishes you don't make at home. If you're judging them on salsa, you've missed the point. For instance, their Chili Colorado, which is a shaved beef dish is a spicy red sauce. The spice level is just right, and the beef is cooked nicely. The rice is flavorful without being overpowering. Another fantastic dish is their pollo y chorizo, a chicken and chorizo dish in a red/cheese sauce. Seriously indulgent but insanely delicious. I've never had a bad dish here. As for service, they're attentive and always friendly. Seriously, if you want authentic Mexican food, here ya go. You won't find Becki the waitress and Johnny the cook here like Abuelo's. My new fave Mexican restaurant. I'm in love with the chicken chimichangas! The cheese sauce they serve over the top makes it! The chori pollo is delicious too. The salsa is fantastic and fresh. They have a sweet ranch type dip served along side the chips and salsa that I've never even heard of before. It's great to dip in both that and the salsa for one tangy fantastic bite! Didn't like it at all. I got Chicken fajitas, they brought me steak. Had to wait for them to bring me what I got. My beans got cold. I ask them if they could warm it up, they took them, but brought them back cold. We finely got down & ate are food. The fajitas where horrible, they tortilla bead was flat, & the chicken was mostly dry. I only ate 1. They where also small. We where done & didn't want anymore, then they bring us someone else food. There is a dude from the kitchen as I walk in that is staring straight at me like he wants to kill me, that or he can't wait to get outside for a cigarette. Our waiter was the polar opposite. The guy was a saint, addressing us as amigos all the time. I've been here before a few years back, it was ok. I keep reading good reviews so I'm giving it another whirl. They seem to be doing something right because the place was near full on a weekday. Chips ok, salsa and a white ranch like sauce as well for the chips, (that's different). For a nice Mexican meal, you can do a lot worse than here. It looks like a classic Mexican hole in the wall, it has live music and a broad menu of freshly cooked classics that you won't find even in Mexican village (such as the mocajete, which is awesome), plus generous portions and a nice beer selection. The chips are fresh, the salsa tastes fresh made with a great taste of fresh cilantro, and the tortillas are hot and buttery, wrapped in foil and resembling naan in flavor. Great food, This place used to have an amazing band that would play the best music I even talked to the band they are one of the few people in Michigan who play merengue. They fired this band a few months ago and it just hasn't been the same, the servers used to be very nice and sweet now they seem like they really don't care. We were wanting Mexican tonight so figured we'd give this place a shot. Seemed a bit understaffed all around, no bartender on 8 pm saturday night, that's cool we came for dinner so no biggie. Chips and salsa were served with a bowl of ranch along with bowl of salsa that was a bit odd. Salsa was good. We ordered fajitas for two, shrimp were Big, steak was skimpy, pork was tender. So I've been coming to this place for a few years now and always check in and for some reason I have written a review but I am now. This is one of my favorite little spots to grab a quick bite of Mexican food. Other than going out to Mexican town in Detroit this is pretty good for what you're getting. The service here is always top notch in my opinion but we also get the same server every time and he loves us when we come in. He knows pretty much what we're going to order and has our drinks ready for us. Never takes too long for us to get our food which is a nice thing when sitting in a restaurant because I've been to many where I sat. longer than needed. And as always the food is amazing, always hot and always cook right. The cool thing about this place is sometimes they have live music a band playing stuff like that so sometimes get a little show while you eat. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants some good Mexican food but doesn't want to travel down to Detroit. read more

First time at this Azteca location and I have to say it's actually really good here compare to other Azteca places I been to around the area. I got the chicken Taco salad and to my surprise it was less then what I would normally get at other locations so that was odd. The amount of food they give you is so little for the price. I seen some plates with barely any rice on there and was shock with little amounts given. Our waitress was nice but checking out was a pain! There computer crashed and we had to wait an extra 20mins for everything to come back up again. I had to actually ask what was going on because the cashier and manger there was just to busy talking to each other and since I was the first in line to check out I had to telephone that info to 8 ppl behind me waiting to check out too. Never once did they apologize to all of us guest in-line or even mention it. I don't think I'll be back again. The food needs to meet up with the customer service in my eyes :/ read more

I alway want to like Grand Azteca because it's local an it's hard to find a great Mexican restaurant outside of Detroit. The food is bland. Rice and beans would be better out of a can bought from the local grocery store. Nothing authentic or everyone Mexican about these items. Salsa is nothing special. I order a chicken cheese quesadilla and the fact that it tastes like they use a Mac and cheese sauce packet for the cheese is honestly disgusting. The guacamole salad was subpar at best and haven't tried their other foods but would not recommend the quesadilla unless you like velvetta. read more
