They scam people by saying they can't replace lifetime guarantee brake pads (even though they get them for free). So they'll charge you for new lifetime guarantee brake pads and not provide any warranty info, so they'll charge can keep on charging for free parts, and the customer keeps on paying even though an honest mechanic would never charge for that. They chose not to respond to our Better Business Bureau complaint. Avoid this place completely. read more

Our cat converter was stolen before the holidays and since it was the holidays and we needed to do some local travel, we went to Grand Auto which was close enough. Had the most "reasonable" prices considering when paying out of pocket. We had no issues with our car before our cat converter was stolen but after bringing here, our check engine has been on, when having the heat on the smell of gas fumes comes through the vents, and this was not happening before. We brought it back 2 more times for them to "fix" it to only be told it wasn't their issue and they fixed it the first time. And the check engine light was on before we ever brought it in, completely false. I would never bring my car back, recommend this place to anyone, it's just another body shop that fixes one thing to have something else go wrong and felt very taken advantage of. They told me it wasn't necessary and that new cars can go much longer than older cars before needing this. thank you. Nick was extremely helpful to me, and his team did a great job with my repair. I took my SUV in for body work after a couple of parking deck mishaps involving concrete walls. (oops...) I was given a very fair estimate as to how much the work would cost -- at a better price vs. two other shops I visited -- and an accurate estimation of when the work would be done. They even helped to arrange a rental car for me from Enterprise at a low rate for the days when I'd be without my car. I got my car back on time and on budget. He's in with certain adjusters as well. With that being said, I brought my car to him to have the door replaced after being hit. He lied right out saying the insurance will only let him get a door from a specific place (not true), it's just a place where he can get a cheap crappy door and pocket some of the insurance money. Went back this morning for the fifth time to have him fix it properly. The door is not aligned correctly so it squeaks and rubs and you can clearly see when you compare it the the other door that it sticks out. He basically told me to go to hell and call the insurance company. Now I'm stuck with his crappy work unless I want to pay an auto body company that knows what their doing to fix it and pay out of my own pocket. Stay away, there are plenty of body shops out there that do great work and not just worried how they can screw the insurance company and pocket the money. See for yourself, all the good reviews are from many years ago, he may have been good and honest at one time but now he's just in it for the money he can pocket! read more

I brought my car to Grand Auto moments before they were supposed to close for a flat tire repair. The office manager was friendly and very helpful with all of my questions. They looked at the tire, clearly communicated the problem with me and made the repair quickly. The repair cost $30, which is a competitive price compared to any of the other shops in the area. I was impressed that one of the owners took the time to come out and chat with me while the tire was being repaired. I also love the huge gum ball machine in the lobby! For my Audi a5, the dealer gave me a price of $999 for rear brakes, Nick got them done for around $400. No hassles and always good advice, like - "I can tear the dashboard apart and charge you a lot of hours to find that, but is this really necessary on a 8 yr old car" All my family now go here as well. i have two cars - one new and one vintage. i've taken both cars there for work and they've been fantastic and very upfront about estimates and they stay true to them - or alert you if it'll be over (and even advise against cost-ineffective repairs). i recently took my '66 Ford Bronco to them to have it stripped, repair the body, seal it and repaint it. and also do some other restoration back to stock body parts. they took amazing care, advised me regarding getting it closer to stock, and generally made sure that the investment i was making in restoring certain aspects was well spent. i got the sense that they truly cared about their work from the start and it definitely shows. their original estimate was competitive and more importantly, when i picked it up today, the estimate was still valid. they really went above and beyond. and throughout the process, i always walked away from our interactions smiling and feeling confident that i wasn't getting "taken" - that they are in it to do quality work at a fair price. huge fan and can not recommend more highly. read more

Monday morning. Single digit temps. And a car that is stalled out at a gas station. My husband's company car wasn't starting and after 30 minutes of trying to jump it with my car, I had to leave to get to work. He called a tow service that said it'd be 2+ hours. I turned to Yelp and spotted Grand Auto Center. GRAND AUTO SAVED THE DAY! In less than 10 minutes, they sent a mechanic to my husband, did a quick jump and basic inspection, gave some great tips about his car. When my husband explained that he has to take the company car to the dealership for service, the guy was still very friendly and congenial, said "I understand, no problem. Have a great Monday!" and went on his way. I'm sorry my husband couldn't use Grand Auto's services but I know I will be ditching my Jiffy Lube appointment this week and heading to Grand Auto for an oil change instead. I always prefer to go to neighborhood businesses but sussing out good businesses, especially for my car, can be daunting. Grand Auto proved to be A+ in customer service already. I always feel like these guys have been fair, and do a good job. If you ask them to fix your bumper, they fix your bumper and manage to avoid then breaking your transmission. They were good with an insurance company that I had to work with after being in a fender bender (not my fault, damn it!) I brought my car here after getting a flat in a pothole. It was brought in with the spare on the front passenger wheel. They said they would let me know if it was repairable. They called back and said it wasn't, because it was a sidewall puncture. I authorized them to put the new tire on. They then called back and said my front driver tire also had to be replaced. Um, what? They claimed I had been "driving on a flat". I'm 33 and know what a flat looks, feels, and sounds like. Then the guy (Manny) goes "you have run-flats and you've been driving with it flat". I checked my Costco invoice from last November when I had all 4 tires replaced. They are not run-flats. When I objected, he said "well it's offsite at a tire shop so I'm not there to see it." Again, what? If you're not doing the work on people's cars, who is? I said I really could not believe that the other tire was also flat, so he offered for me to come look at it. I live near this shop, so it only took me a couple minutes to walk there, and Donna (receptionist) said it would take them a few more minutes to have the car ready to view because "it had to be taken offsite and the other facility mixed up my tires" and that the correct tires had to be retrieved from the other place. What the hell? When I was allowed to see the tires, they had both been taken off and the new driver side tire was already done, which I had not authorized - my flat was on the passenger side. I had no choice but to pay. Hoping that Costco would honor my warranty for the other tire, I took the car with the new driver side and spare on the other to Costco tire center, and loaded the two "flat" tires into the trunk to show them. And the best part of all? When they tested the driver side tire I had in the trunk...they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Basically, I paid Grand Auto FOR WORK I DIDN'T NEED. When I called Manny back to tell him what I'd learned, even though he eventually admitted the mistake, I was offered no rebate, no refund, nothing. What a clever scam. I took my car here for a simple oil change, tire rotation, and fluid top off. I have to be honest, I don't think they did anything. I picked up my car and they told me that everything was done. I got in and the oil light and washer fluid light were both on. They "checked" the fluid and said it was fine. "There must be something wrong with your sensor". I got home and checked the fluids myself and I needed antifreeze, washer fluid, and steering fluid. I had to bring it back a few minutes later for them to top it all off. Honestly it took a few seconds but why the hell would that not have been done after the routine work AND after I asked them to check that specifically. My car took over 1 gal of washer fluid. Manny called me the next day after checking out the problem with his own eyes. He told me he had to increase the cost based on what he saw, but the price was still less than the original quote I received. My car was ready 2 days later. I loooooove Grand Auto! Brought my car over back in February for a flat tire that was frozen on. I then spoke with Nick who inquired about the substantial body damage my car had recieved the previous year. After speaking to him at length I decided that I trusted them enough to return my car to them for a much needed face lift. When I got her back she looked great! He also fixed my front bumper AND changed my oil for no additional cost! Since then I have brought my car there for what I thought was a dead battery but ended up being something with faulty wiring (which they also fixed for no charge) as well as to replace my passenger window that got smashed when someone broke into my car (not free but for a very reasonable price ). I agree with BL, it's a shame there isn't an option for ZERO stars! They coached me on what to say to my insurance company for an accident that wasn't my fault. They promised my car would be fixed in a week.. I got it 31 days later! Upon picking it up, I asked about the guarantee on the work and they said if there were any problems or if the car started making any strange noises, to simply bring it back and they would take care of it. Total shocker, the car started making some crazy noises and I brought it back in to see what the new issue(s) are. I was told that I would have to pay for a minimum of 3 hours for them to see what's going on. Nick called me back to tell me that he "thinks it might be the alternator,or maybe a belt. or maybe a pully or something else". He went on to quote me $1,300 for something he wasn't even sure of what the problem is. I don't trust these people at all! Just because a company has been in business a long time doesn't mean they are good, honest mechanics... it could just mean they have done a great job of taking advantage of people and screwing insurance companies for 28 years! I was driving down Grand Ave to Navy Pier when my car starting making a terrible noise, like metal scraping the ground. I kept checking but couldn't see anything. It got worse so I pulled into this random auto shop. Of course I had no appointment and I knew nothing about the place, but they were willing to take a look. They took it for a test drive and put it up on the lift. Within 10 minutes they found a rock that was rattling around in a metal shield on the undercarriage. They removed it, solving the problem, and wouldn't take any money! They really saved me, and they were very kind and friendly. I know little else about them, but it made my day. read more

Absolutely love these guys. On several occasions, I've taken my car there for weird noses or warning lights. They always fit me in same day. The prices are always less then the quotes from the dealer. And they have even told me that extra work doesn't need to be done...
