Pleasantly surprised with the food. The Barbados ribs were excellent. Cesar salad and grilled avocado salad were outstanding. Pollo taco was great; so was the hot chicken taco (very spicy). Mexican ice cream was good, it has a hint of nutmeg which give it extra flavoring. Noise level of restaurant is moderate to loud. Coffee and pastry bar are located off in a section of the restaurant where it would be ideal to conduct business or do work. Parking is lacking at the establishment, just because the parking lot appears full - does not mean the restaurant attendance is high. Service was also better than most restaurants. I was home for spring break and this is the new location that my parents took me to enjoy a night out. The menu doesn't have much to choose from, but both of my parents recommended the rice bowl with pulled pork. With not wanting the whole table to get the same thing, I ordered the Gran Caster burrito with the spicy chicken...I wasn't expecting the chicken to be that spicy due to that being the only spicy protein option on the menu. The rice bowl, by far, is the thing that is going to keep me going back. With each and every bite there is a new combination of flavors. The overall atmosphere is good, the light candles on the table gives the tables a feeling of warmth and at home, the wait wasn't long and offered a text response so if the waiting area was full you didn't have to be in close proximity. The coffee shop is a cute place that is right on the left if you walk in, it is rather small so do not plan to be there for too long. Over all this is a place that I would go back to. read more

Despite many negative comments about the food, I still really wanted to check this place out and I'm glad I did. Everything was great! Our server was super nice, attentive and personable. I didn't expect the food to be something out of the world, but I was expecting good tacos, good queso and good margaritas and that's what we got! Some people are too picky or have extremely high expectations for a restaurant that's meant to be casual and fun. Get the tacos, champ style, they're really good! The tuna ceviche was really good and fresh and the queso dip was bomb. Also get the house salsas, they were all really good, especially the Peruvian green Chile one (we asked for extra). This place is extremely "trendy" inside. The food is good but honestly not the best Mexican food I've ever had. The chips and salsa cones with three different types of salsa and only one was not too spicy for my son. I think it's an ok place to bring kids they have options for them and also have a changing table in the women's bathroom. The atmosphere and decor is pretty cool- lots of seating choices (sofa, bar, tables, etc.) and lots of areas to choose from. The menu = lots of selection. It would have had 5 stars but I thought that what I ordered (dinner sized salad) was too expensive considering the size of the salad- compared to similar restaurants. Those I was with felt similar. So I guess some of the food may not be as amazing as we would have hoped- however it was good quality and the atmosphere makes up for the food. I would go again for that. read more

I want to love this place. It's beautiful. The atmosphere is great. I love its sister restaurant, Honcho. I love the fish tacos and the Brussels sprouts tacos at Honcho, among other great menu items. I tried Gran Castor during the soft opening. I ordered a drink and it came back tasting of pure salt. I never complain, but couldn't drink it. They brought me another. It tasted the same. After that, I asked for water. Later, during the meal, the server came over and apologized. Evidently, they had poured saline into my glass! It was mislabeled! No offer of a free appetizer or dessert to make up for me drinking saline solution. The food was mediocre at best. I've been back twice since they opened and both times our party of people (4 on one occasion and 8 on another) agreed it was, again, mediocre. Make the drive to Honcho and enjoy a similar atmosphere and much better food! read more

Went there for dinner and my husband got a pea sized hunk of stone in his rice/beans. Thank god he didn't bite down because it would have cracked his tooth!!!! Atmosphere/drinks/service = very good, however (a big HOWEVER); it tries a bit too hard on the tacos with mediocre results. Because of this, it is overpriced. Take the extra time to drive to Ferndale and go to Imperial. You won't be disappointed. You most likely will be with this place. read more

Absolutely loved this restaurant! Me and a few girlfriends went here on national Margarita day, and were seated immediately. They had a great deal on a flight of margaritas, and the Fugazetta appetizer that was recommended to us was amazing! A cheese bread with pesto like sauce and onions!! The taco special was fantastic! If you are okay with some sweet to the savory you'll love the pork belly and steak taco. It has little cubed sweet potatoes in it as well and a deep subtle smoke to the seasoning. Doubled up soft corn shell was the perfect way to eat this! I am GF sensitive so that worked perfectly for me. My friend wanted to try their nachos, we really enjoyed that too. She added black beans which helped make it even more of a meal to share with getting a taco for each of us. We did the grilled chicken on the nachos and the flavors were fantastic, I loved the creamy garlic saucy stuff.. not too much it was on the edge of possibly over taking it but didn't quite tip the balance. Love it with plenty of real cheese and they hit that out of the park, home run! She got the small side of quac for the nachos but I was leery since I hate peas and it mentioned peas in the mix for the guacamole. I did have a taste of the guacamole and sure wished I had ordered it. No taste of the peas thank goodness! It had great flavor and was good. We both enjoyed the atmosphere. Fun, relaxed and bright! Excellent waiter, the best service I have had in a long while. He was very knowledgeable to share what the menu was all about since we were first timers. I wish I remembered his name. Great guy, friendly and fast about taking care of what we asked. I got the amazing coffee on the go when we left. I definitely want to be back for some morning coffee and a GF muffin. We stopped in to check this place out and were pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere is very well planned out and I was pleased to not see TV's plastered on every wall, (just a few in select areas). There are 2 large rooms on opposite ends, each with their own vibe, but both with large inviting bars. The "soft opening" menu, (they had only been open 6 days), was chock full of interesting Latin street food options and lots of cocktails to explore. We tried the appetizer Fugazetta, (an Argentinian flatbread), and a few of their tacos that were really tasty. We can't wait to come back and try more! read more

Four of us dined on Labor Day for dinner. Our first observation was that the music sound system was overwhelming LOUD. The manager told us that he would move us to a spot a bit quieter but the music is part of their ambiance and wouldn't be lowered at our request. The smaller room was marginally quieter. We tried the caso and guacamole appetizers. The chips used are very salty and not made in house . As for the main courses, the burrito was tasteless and over cooked. The burrito was taken off the bill. As for the tacos, the chicken was ok but the pulled pork was marginal and the soft shells used are tasteless. We will give Gran Castor time to sort out the noise and food issues mentioned and try them again sometime down the road. read more

Took our kids here for the first time and we loved it. The atmosphere is very cool as all the Union Joints are. Fire roaring and good music playing. Seated right away and service was attentive. We ordered a simple pizza during lunchtime on a Sunday and waited over an hour until being told they hadn't even started making the food! The manager said they can only offer us something else, so we chose a different menu item. Waited another 20 minutes until the manager comes out with the pizza we ordered originally. She said they couldn't offer a refund until tomorrow so she gave us a gift card instead. The restaurant location is convenient, parking is decent. The ambience is super cool and eclectic, and it is very expansive. The menu is interesting and had a variety of items on the menu. My husband and I went out on a date night a month or two ago and we were pleasantly surprised by the place. We got several different items off the menu, he got the ceviche and was raving about how delicious it was and taking pictures, I got a vegetarian soup that was wonderful as well even if I didn't take pictures of it. When we got our entrees we were a little underwhelmed, and at first I thought it may have just been me, but my food was overpowered by sweet potato. My husband said his food, too, was overpowered by sweet potato. I like sweet potato probably more than most people but there is a time and a place for it, and not in my (IIRC) tamale pie. For dessert we got a key lime pie which was pretty decent. We would go here again for the decor but we would have to try something different for our entrees. read more

Went on a busy sat night. They have a small lounge area where you can wait and have coffee or wait by their larger area by the fireplace. Ambiance is cozy and lots of energy. Food was awesome. Our waiter was friendly and was very spot on with his recommendation in what to eat. Wife and I had an awesome time. Waited about 30 min in a very busy night but went by quickly due to probably of just enjoying watching people and sitting by the cozy fireplace. Highly recommended. read more
