Came here for happy hour with a friend and enjoyed some fantastic margaritas and cheese bread! I also tried the elote pizza which was a great flavor combo for a pizza and something I'd definitely order again. The restaurant has a really cozy and fun atmosphere with the fireplace at the center. Definitely recommend coming! read more

I came to Gran Castor with a large group of 10, luckily it was for an early weekday lunch. The restaurant was empty, and service was quick. They have a fully stocked bar, so the world is your oyster. I ordered tacos, and they were ok. I was underwhelmed, although they were jam-packed with toppings, they just weren't flavorful. It was just an ok time, maybe good for a happy hour read more

Came in for brunch, but brunch was no longer something they do on Sundays be aware their main website still states that. Cute decor with plush sittings and fireplace in the middle. On to the food, had their draft mango margarita it was not bad. Chips with 3 salsas was good. Beef tacos were bad, the only dish with egg was a rice bowl with kimchi it was ok. Service was good. Have a potential to be good spot if the kitchen kick it up a notch Fun fact in the middle of the wall a framed picture of the attorney that looks like an old porn star Ron Jeremy read more

We were excited to visit Grand Castor, especially after hearing about their brunch menu, only to be disappointed to learn they no longer offer it. The decor, however, is undeniably Instagram-worthy, and we were amused to discover that their lawyer has ensured a quirky homage to Ron Jeremy prominently displayed in the restaurant--a fun and unexpected touch! He wrote it into their contract. LOL. The service was quick and friendly, but the food didn't live up to expectations. My tortilla soup was essentially broth-less, and the tuna on my salad didn't seem fresh--I left half of it behind. The beef tacos, which should be renamed "hamburger tacos with unmelted cheese," fell flat even with the kid, who didn't finish one. Grand Castor has a fun atmosphere and great service, but the food left us underwhelmed. With a little more attention to quality and detail in the kitchen, it could be as memorable as its decor. read more

Loved the decor and an ambiance! There are 2 different seating rooms - one has a great big fire pit and cacti, and the other all sort of pink and shiny! There is a strange retro looking portrait of a man in the main room ;). Waiter told us an interesting story behind it.. food was somewhat hit or miss. My rice bowl was excellent! My friend's beef tacos - were not. Overall I liked this place especially on a cold Sunday- with a drink and a fire pit going read more

I came here about a month ago, so excited since it's been months since last coming here. I was craving nachos + trying their new brunch menu. I arrived on a Sunday morning near 11:30 and was the second table to sit down. There was no more brunch menu, the service was super slow (it took 15+ minutes just to get water and another 20 for the server to come back and take orders), and the nachos were subpar to say the least. I was really disheartened after this visit and I'm not sure when I'll come back, but probably not during a weekend morning. read more

We enjoyed it! Only complaint the times are not served as indicated on the menu. Example: menu says lime and cilantro rice; it's lime rice and tastes like white rice. Very basic. The donuts indicate Mexican chocolate and caramel as dipping sauces but it only came with caramel. The caramel was cold too; that's a no no with a warm donut. I wasn't told these things before ordering and had to ask once they came to table. The chocolate chip cookie was nothing special. Crispellis's has theeee best chocolate chip cookies ever; always ask for them to be served warm or heat it up at home! Delicious! The elote pizza was so delicious! Full of flavor and crust is perfect. The tacos, guacamole, mango margaritas were very good. We will return just for the pizza and donuts! Yummmyyyy read more

I visited specifically for the Christmas pop-up bar, and the decorations were super cute and festive. The holiday cocktails were pretty good too. I was planning to order tacos, but our waiter recommended trying the pizza since that's their specialty. I created my own, and it was good. My only issue is that I wish the waiter had mentioned that adding a side of Peruvian green chili sauce would cost around $3--I would've taken it to go with my leftover pizza! read more

I didn't have a good experience here, the food wasn't good and the service wasn't that great neither. I was with a party of 8. And one of the people in my party order this spicy burrito but when I said it was hot it was so hot that you couldn't even enjoy it and then the server had the nerve to give a her a hard and said they couldn't take it off the bill and give her something different even though she only took 1 bite. I ordered the chicken and steak burrito it was very bland and the beans didn't seem fully cooked. I would not go back here. Only if I had to come here for a party but I probably wouldn't eat. read more

Had been waiting to try this one out and turns out they hold a family feud (opinionated) style sporcle event every Tuesday 6-8pm so went there with a team.. just for the ambience I will go there again, it is so cool out there. Service was pretty good too, they end their happy hour around 6 so the staff was on top of collecting last minute orders before they go back normal price.. Our waitress was very helpful too in terms of suggesting her recommendations which i definitely liked for someone being confused all the time between different items. After the sporcle event we hung out by their indoor fire pit area at the sofas for a little longer.. just for the ambience I feel it a perfect place to hang out.. definitely looking forward to visit this one again, this time focusing on more food options, heard their pizzas were good too.. I personally liked their mango margarita and the queso dip a lot read more

The main items at Gran Caster are kind of weird. Some of them are really delicious like the rib appetizer. Some of them are a little bit strange. I don't really understand the theme of the restaurant. The service is usually pretty good. People seem to love the mac & cheese, but I have a big fan. But I'm not a big mac & cheese fan so my suggestion is judge for yourself. read more

The reviews are not wrong. I expect so much more from Union Joints. Pros: The decor is eclectic and interesting. Parking lot. Veggie options. Happy hour from 4-6. Cons: painfully slow service. Not enough vegan options. Back bar closed. Would love to see this place get more help and be more attentive to customers. read more

Very cute and trendy place in Troy! Went this past weekend but they were understaffed and the 3 people working there were very sweet and kept us updated if anything was going to be delayed. I got the shrimp and chicken tacos which were flavorful! Unfortunately the tea latte was a little cold but I think it's because our waiter also had to make all of ours and just got delayed since it was busy so definitely not her fault. There is a cute fireplace area and a separate room to rent out for private events. Definitely would go back next time I am in the area! read more

Went last night 10/10 /25, we 've tried Clarkston union, the Woodshop, Honchos and Vinsetta garage so we had high hopes for Gran Castor , it was disappointing at best Shrimp taco was horrible and couldn't be eaten, the burrito was burnt The elottte pizza was good The guacamole and salsa were good but most other places don't charge for chips and Salsa , Gran Castor does at $9 Complained about the two meals and the waitress did nothing to address our complaint She was a good attentive waitress up to that point read more

I stopped in with an out of town co-worker for an early dinner. First, the ambiance has a very cool vibe with a large round fireplace in the center, couches and armchairs. We sat at a little two top not far from the fireplace. We started with margaritas, ancho chile blood orange for me, thyme pear for my co-worker. Mine was delicious. I loved the hint of spice and sweet of the blood orange. I could also taste both the thyme and pear of the other, neither flavor was overpowering, I'd like more pear. Co-worker ordered tacos, I ordered the burrito with carnitas because it had cactus in it! We both enjoyed our meal. Server was attentive. Unique ambiance. I wish the flavor profiles of the items were stronger so I could taste cactus, etc. Overall, I would not hesitate to return. read more

The first time I came here years ago this place was really great. We love Union Joints and go to Honcho regularly, in fact we were at Honcho a couple months ago and it was like a party. So many people on both sides of the building, really festive atmosphere. We came here on a Saturday night. Typical Saturday nights, restaurants are packed and you cannot get in without an hour or more wait. We arrived during prime time, and maybe two other tables were occupied and a couple people were at the bar. We called ahead that we were arriving and put in for a reservation, but no one was manning the host station and we waited about ten minutes before someone had a chance to seat us. I do love the look of this place, big fire place in the middle, fun decor. But when I went to the restroom most of the stalls were unoccupied but were locked. One stall had toilet paper and one did not. The sinks did not work well. One had hand soap, and one barely had any left. Our waitress was kind but did not check in on us enough, but it was so understaffed perhaps she had too many responsibilities. The prices have gone up so much, you barely get anything for your money, I believe it is even more expensive than Honcho by a few cents, but that makes a difference. The quality of the food has gone down, which is super disappointing since Honcho was sooo good last time. I got a side of rice. It was basically three spoon worths of rice which was flavorful but did not taste fresh, it was a bit hard. I got a side of the famous mac and cheese, that was pretty solid, thank goodness. I had my usual not hot chicken taco. The chicken was tiny and burnt to a black crispness on the outside, not edible. One of the shells was also burnt and there was barely any sauce or pickles. I could not eat it after one bite. It was charred. We also ordered a taco night taco which looked good, but was miniscule. The winner of the night was the meat pizza. It was large, had plenty of toppings, tasted fresh, had great crust, the only item that was worth the price and was leftover. The portions were so small, it would have been better to have stayed home and made my own dinner. The waitress was accommodating but the bill was too expensive for us to return to this location. We will go back to the other restaurants they own next time. read more

I really wanted to like Gran Castor. The menu seemed interesting enough on my pre-trip read, but I found myself sorely disappointed by their lack of dairy-free options. The Lychee tea mocktail was alright and reasonably priced, but I felt the rest of the menu was a bit overpriced. The Sweet Pea guacamole was good, albeit lacking in salt and acid. The peas added an interesting flavor and made it very filling, though. The Bahn Mi taco was poorly named, as it barely resembled Bahn Mi flavors. It was pretty much solid pork with Korean barbecue sauce, but it was the best dairy-free taco option as it required no modification. I ordered the Taco Party platter, which I couldn't modify despite the other two tacos needing significant changes to be dairy-free. Ordering three tacos plus rice and beans without the platter would have cost almost $30. The rice and beans were good, but the salsa verde they provided to replace the dairy on the chicken and beef tacos wasn't enough to give them depth of flavor. The service was a mixed bag. The waitress was patient and made sure my dairy allergy was communicated, which I appreciated. However, she was inattentive despite the restaurant not being busy. She didn't check on how the food was or offer boxes despite us having nearly full plates. I understand customer service is hard, but I found it lacking. The vibes in the restaurant were fun. I liked their cactus art and the fire pit was pretty, but (wo)man cannot feed on vibes alone. For vibes and better tacos, hit up Imperial in Ferndale. read more

One of my favorite places in Troy! When you come inside it's very nicely decorated with a very festive and fun atmosphere. The colors are bright and cheerful. It's always very clean and smells great when you're walking through. There are many seating options and even a couch area for snacks and drinks with fire pits. My favorite part is the food. It's American Mexican fusion food. I always get the elote pizza. It has the perfect amount of toppings and the sauce on top is tangy with a little spice to it. They have hot sauce available to make it spicier. The crust is soft but with a crunchy outside. The other dish I got was the queso. It was rich and full of flavor. The menu has many options like burritos and tacos as well. Lastly the service is always great! The hostess try their best to seat you quickly. The wait staff is always kind and helpful. I'be never had an issue with them before even when I was with a big party. You definitely should try this place! read more

We ate here for an early dinner on a Saturday evening. We loved the huge booths, open concept and the mid-mod decor. The food was excellent, but the service was below average. A little spendy for a casual drop in meal, but not bad for an upscale date or special occasion. We enjoyed the Margheritas and the guacamole the best. Our carne asada tacos were just average, but the house burrito with carne asada was amazing. Overall a nice place with a great feel and above average food. Feels trendy, but the service was just so-so. We would eat here again if we had an occasion or were meeting friends.. read more

I'd noticed this place before just driving by, but decided to try it upon a friend's recommendation. It was just past 4pm which is when they open. And time for happy hour! Had to get the half priced margarita! I settled on the strawberry rhubarb. Excellent! I also got to sample a cucumber jalapeño margarita. Interesting! Not my fave but love the heat! My sister got a macchiato since they also have a coffee bar here. The espresso was light but not bad at all! We shared chips with the sweet pea guacamole and finished off with the donuts. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful! To be honest, I've had bad guacamole before. It's definitely something worth ordering when you eat here! The chips are sourced from somewhere but still made fresh, our waiter told us. The donuts were small but melt in your mouth! Wow! They gave us caramel and chocolate sauce to dip into it. The donuts really had the same flavor of a churro. Looking at the menu, it's really just Americanized. Not a bad thing though. There's always room for creativity. Parking wasn't bad either. They have a sizeable parking lot. The whole vibe though? WOW. Someone took the time to decorate! From the expensive furniture to the rugs and fireplace. Y'all know this type of decor style is pricey! It's beautiful though! It's nice just sitting in a comfy chair. read more

A cozy, intimate ambiance with an affordable ala carte style menu. Ordered fugazzetas and guacamole as starters. The fugazzeta was tasty with a hint of spicy. It could serve as a meal in itself. The sweet pea guacamole came with an abundance of crispy corn tortilla chips. Both were tasty. The chicken tortilla soup had a spicy kick to it and has a tomatoe-y base vs a liquid broth. Other entrees ordered were Taco night (Dorado style), Pollo Asado (House style) and kids mac & cheese (came with apple slices, black beans & rice). My daughter requested chocolate milk--it was a cinnamon chocolate milk and she seemed to enjoy it--she actually requested seconds! Waitress was attentive and friendly and even assisted in our selections. We came on a Monday during dinner rush--and there was a handful of tables and people seated by the fire. For the affordable menu, I would have anticipated more patrons. There is also a coffee bar and a room for small group gatherings. We will definitely will be back. read more

Overall, this place is really cool. The vibe is outstanding. You can see from my picture, they have an awesome fireplace type area in the middle and tables around along with a bar. In the back, there's more seating (not pictured). I'd recommend a reservation since they got busy, even on a Wednesday. The food was good. Best ever? No. But, it's good. We started with the chips and salsa. 3 different types of salsa, all were great. The downfall here was the chips. They tasted like chips you could buy at Kroger. So many opportunities to partner with a local tortilla shop or make their own in house. Next, we got the Elote Special Pizza. This was good - a super unique mix of sauce and corn. Crust was wonderful. The tacos, we got a variety. They were good -- not the best ever, but good. Margaritas were good too! Highly recommend the blood orange and habanero, if they have it. Flavors change regularly (though the classic house is always there). Overall, if you're in the area, I'd recommend stopping in. Especially for the uniqueness of the restaurant, both in the menu and atmosphere. read more

Love love love all Union Joints, they are like my children and I can't pick a favorite, but Gran Castor is definitely yet another home run for the Union family! If you love Honcho, but also are looking for something a bit more new, located more centrally in the metro Detroit area in Troy, maybe craving tacos and pizza equally, some happy hour drinks perhaps, then Gran Castor is your PLACE! This place is delicious through and through and if we're being completely honest, I was totally devastated that they remained closed throughout the majority of the pandemic and definitely shed a happy tear when they finally reopened earlier this year. The elote pizza at Gran Castor is the stuff of my dreams and while I'm at it, I want a taco or two as well because they carry all my favorite tacos from Honcho too. The interior space at Gran Castor is so fricken cute and I'm kind of obsessed with the fact that they took over this space after Hooter's closed haha! I love that they have kept the original Hooter's palm trees up outside on their patio space too! :) This building is LONG and as you walk through the entire inside of the restaurant, it's just cute decor after cute decor everywhere you look. It really gets you in the moody vibe for a cute night out with your friends and/or SOs. It's always a great time at Gran Castor! read more

This COULD be a perfect place to come for coffee with a friend, dinner date or with family. It's unique and delicious, if you're good with spicy (they don't do not spicy) and don't mind a little on the pricy side. We are glad to pay for such fresh tasty food and delightful atmosphere. I've been here a half dozen times: with friends, with my immediate family, with my extended family... daytime and evening... a wonderful gastronomic adventure and attentive, approachable waitstaff! Freshly made donuts for dessert to die for. The Achilles heel? The MUSIC is GREAT but SO. GO*DAM* LOUD. YOU. CANT. HEAR. A G*DDA*N WORD. ANYONE AT YOUR TABLE. IS SAYING. Every single time we go! We've asked them to turn it down and they do, little or for a minute. It's exhausting straining to hear and having to speak everything louder than normal to be heard! I don't understand. Isn't the whole reason for going out to eat together SO YOU CAN TALK?!?! I think that's the last time we will go there for a meal. Maybe I'll try again for coffee sometime read more

My husband and I came back here for dinner. I was excited to see that dinner service was bustling. We put our name in for a two top and we did just a short period of time by the fireplace for our table. The hostess took us to our table in the back room that had zero vibe, a very cold draft and flimsy bar stools. I immediately walked back up and asked if we could sit up front where the rest of the people were. The hostess said no problem, and put our name back on the list. While we waited two spots opened up at the bar so we decided we move up there until they called our name. Waited about 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us and say he would be with us as soon as he could. About another 10 minutes goes by and he finally comes back to take our drink order. Bartender takes our drink order and our order for the house salsas (our app while we wait for our table). Drinks came back another 10 minutes later, no chips and salsa. We waited. Mind you still no one has texted us about our table being ready. We decided at this point we should just order our room meals. We ordered our meals which came out in a fairly reasonable time, but still no chips and salsa. Bartender stops by another time to take our food order, food comes out in about 15 minutes and still no sign of the chips and salsa or a text for our table. Food prices have gone up significantly here, with Tacos being around 6 dollars EACH! They are still really tasty but $6 is A LOT for this size of taco with pork shoulder and some pickled veg, c'mon now. Overall, food is still pretty good but the service here is HORRIBLE! We never did get called for our table, never got our chips and salsa, and after I asked him to cancel them, it OF COURSE was still on the bill so I had to wait some more time to have it corrected. I'm sad to say it'll be a long time before I give this place a shot again. Downsize if you can't staff your restaurant instead of ruining a really good thing you had. read more

We came here on a Friday night around 7. We were told about 25-30 minute wait. We got a drink at the bar and sat by the fire, which was great on a cold snowy night. Right as my husband came back with the drinks our table was ready. It was maybe 5-10 minute wait and he wanted to sit by the fire longer. Husband ordered a beer and a margarita and enjoyed them both. He also got the tortilla soup and I got the chicken enchiladas. Both were good. If you are spice adverse I would not order the soup. I could enjoy one bite but not the whole bowl. This place was a huge let down. The margaritas were great and the jerk chicken nachos were good. Everything else was bland, dry and flavorless. I got the chicken taco and the shrimp po boy.
