I have trained jiujitsu a little over 5 years.  I have been training at Gracie Barra Bothell for more than a year now.  I have trained in Martial Arts both on the East and West coasts of the US in various styles including karate, aikido, krav maga, and Brazilian jiujitsu.  Gracie Barra Bothell is one of the best locations I have ever trained at!  Your first day at any new gym or dojo can seem scary.  However, Gracie Barra Bothell has a very welcoming/down to earth atmosphere.  Professor Rocky and Professor Melvin will welcome you with open arms!  You will feel apart of the Gracie Barra Bothell Family from your very first class.  In addition to being a comfortable place to train, you will be taught by instructors who are among the best in the north west. Professor Melvin is one of the highest ranked Brazilian Jiujitsu instructors in the North West.   In some ways, he reminds me of my high school trigonometry teacher.  My high school trigonometry teacher once told me to do well in his class, I either need to memorize all the formulas for the test or I need to understand how a few of the formulas work so that I can derive all the other formulas on my own.  Professor Melvin has an engineering background and therefore approaches Jiujitsu from an engineering perspective.  You will not hear him say "Just copy what I do."  He doesn't just show you what to do.  He explains the mechanics and the "Why" behind what you do.  He also encourages his students to ask questions.  As a software engineer, I find his teaching methodology to be very helpful. Professor Rocky trains my oldest Daughter, who is six years old, in the kid's jiujitsu class.  I have been impressed by the way he engages the kids in his classes.  In the future, I plan on having him train my youngest Daughter, who is currently three years old, as well.  Professor Rocky is amazing with Kids!  I trained martial arts growing up and I can say that martial arts would have been way more fun to learn had Professor Rocky been my teacher!  He just gets kids.  He understands how to keep the kids engaged by having fun while teaching them fundamental jiujitsu techniques that will pay dividends in their jiujitsu journey.  As an Adult who trains Jiujitsu, I also learn a lot from the kids classes!  Professor Rocky ingrains the fundamentals and adapts the techniques so that they can be efficiently internalized and absorbed by the kids.  In addition to being very knowledgeable about Jiujitsu, Professor Rocky spends a lot of time reading books on how to be a more effective teacher and communicator.  If your Child attends the kids jiujitsu class, they won't just learn jiujitsu.  They will learn key life skills like not giving up when things get hard or uncomfortable.  They will also learn to be more confident while at the same time taking care of their teammates.  To increase their confidence, the kids are given opportunities to lead in class.  This can involve leading an exercise or teaching a technique that they have learned.  Gracie Barra Bothell kids are taught that there are winners and learners.  You only lose if you don't learn. If you are interested in learning Brazilian jiujitsu but are a bit nervous, Relax!  Again, you will feel like family from your very first class!  Not only that, you will be on your way to becoming a jiujitsu machine from the fantastic instruction you will receive!  I hope to see you on the mats! read more

Jiu Jitsu for everyone! The name says it all. Gracie Barra Bothell is a family friendly place to train jiu jitsu. Men, women, children, serious competitors and casual practitioners alike...everyone is welcome! The gym's community foster a very friendly environment, making the experience of being "the new guy" a pleasant one. I have been training at Gracie Barra Bothell for about two months and I have already developed excellent relationships with the other members and genuinely look forward to seeing them each training day. The professors and coaches are of the highest caliber. They provide excellent instruction supported by a foundationally solid curriculum. They are the reason Gracie Barra continue to be well-represented in jiu jitsu competitions all over the world. The professors and coaches are genuinely invested in the success and progress of their students and are very accommodating with all learning styles. The gym facilities are well maintained and there is lots of mat space to train. There are showers available for use and a separate changing room for donning/doffing your gi. The gym provides "loaner" gi's for drop-ins and there is a large selection of shirts, gi's and gear for purchase. Jason, provided an exceptional experience when I enrolled. He is incredibly kind and encouraging. His dedication to his members and his investment in the quality of their experience is obvious. If you are looking for a quality place to train BJJ, compete, or make friends...this is the place for you! Get in there and train!!! read more

Let's be real. It's intimidating for a child/youth to walk into a place where things don't go the way they want it to. That's reality and that's why we signed up our 9 year old girl. It took us months to reach out the Gracie Barra Bothell because our daughter is the sweetest, most fair, kind, never hurt a fly kind of girl. She's tough and her passion is riding 1,000 lb horses going as fast as possible since she was 3. Barrel racer. Although that's what she loves, this place has taught her strength, hard work and consistency. They teach the kids to keep on going even in bitter days. The coaches are fantastic. All so great in their own way! Coach Melvin gets you going! Never give up even if it's rough. You got it kind of attitude. Coach Rocky does the same and is a wonderful with the kids. All the coaches give that drive that they need. The "you can conquer what you're doing if you just try and give it all you got!" The kids all work together and help each other out. Overall, I was hesitant about this place prior to joining as so many parents are but so glad we stuck to it. Our daughter is strong mentally, physically and emotionally. Ps. Please make sure you attend more than one class... it will change your outlook on this place and what our kids are capable of doing. First class can be intimidating. See you on the mat! read more

My 7 year old daughter has been attending Gracie Barra Bothell consistently for over a year now and she has grown mentally, physically and socially thanks to all the encouragements, love and support from the team at Gracie Barra! Shout out to Professor Melvin and Professor Rocky! Her experience has taught her not only physical training but also discipline/structure and it really reflects on her behavior at home. Her hard work and dedication has taught her to push herself and in return she's rewarded with outstanding attendance and belt promotions. Thank you Gracie Barra for exceeding our expectations and thank you for being like family!! read more

ONE CALL IS ALL IT TOOK! Saw this gym on Yelp as I was looking for the closest BJJ gym, first-timer here. Spoke to Jason first, and encouraged that I come in on that same day to do a trial and haven't looked back since. Love this gym and looking forward to many years of training! Excellent customer service upfront. Professor Mark is awesome and a great head instructor as well as the crew to include Coach Jason, Coach Peter, Coach Bret, Coach Rocky, and the awesome students who are becoming family to me. Hands down, home is home for a reason and glad to call this my home gym. read more

Both of our daughters (11 & 7) have been going to Gracie Barra Bothell for just under a year and we have nothing but great things to say! The confidence and growth in both our girls has been amazing to watch. They always walk off the mat with a smile and having learned something knew. We usually get a full hour recap of what they've learned. Professor Rocky and Professor Melvin (and the coaches) are great instructors!! Professional, caring, and exactly what you'd want from teachers for your kids. I recommend them to everyone that has a kid interested in Jiu Jitsu! read more

My daughter started taking BJJ classes at GB Bothell a few months ago. To put it lightly, we are enamored by the warmth of the staff and the professionalism of Professor Rocky when it comes to communicating with parents and children. Rocky's demeanor has a way of putting kids, even tentative kids, at ease and engaged. Particularly when those beginner months are so critical in nurturing the trust between teacher and student, this was extremely important to me as a parent. We could not be more pleased with the product and look forward to growing with GB Bothell. read more

Every time I see classes at Gracie Barra Bothell they are professional, organized, and everyone is working hard and learning. Rocky does an amazing job running a top notch program with Professor Melvin. The kids are always having a fun and learning. I am impressed with how they keep the classes new and exciting for the students. They also did a wonderful job during Covid with online classes and home workouts. These guys care a ton about the students and know what it takes to run a great school. 5 stars for sure! read more

The best training for learning self defense for all ages. I have two children ages 8 and 9 and they come twice a week for lessons. Very professional and kid friendly for children who have never done any type of actual sports activities before now. It's also great exercise. They are learning discipline and getting a routine as well as learning how to be able to defend themselves in the event of being bullied or attacked. It's a must take class. read more

My daughter has been attending classes there for a year now and we like everything very much. Firstly, it is a very good physical activity during the "total screentime". Secondly, a very warm family atmosphere, children learn to respect themselves, their peers, coaches, they learn to believe in themselves. Price is pretty affordable, the schedule is convenient :) Highly recommend read more

GB Bothell has been going strong for three plus years now. The instruction by Professor Melvin, Professor Rocky and visiting GB black belts has always been a consistently high level. At the same time, it's a family friendly gym with ample kids programs and events to keep the little ones entertained while mom, dad or both get out there on the mat. Highly Recommended read more

I had a chance to try out the 6pm class at the new location in Bothel and was impressed by how the whole experience went. Even though last time I trained was about a year and a half ago, I barely felt it and was able to have fun. Special thanks to professors Rocky and Melvin for making this experience pleasant and painless read more

I love this gym. Jason is an amazing instructor and knows how to get you motivated. The Barrafit program is a great workout and Jason is willing to move the intensity up or down depending on your fitness level or if you are injured. I have taken 3 6-week challenges at the gym and look forward to complete another one. read more

This is the perfect place to learn Jiu-Jitsu. Gracie is the mainly family for Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil (and the world) and the most responsible for the development of this martial art. I, being Brazilian, may assure that this is the right place and also with the right and best Masters. Really love training here. read more
