Coach Jenny is incredible! She's highly skilled in jiu-jitsu and offers a Women's class on Friday evenings. She explains techniques clearly and answers questions with care, making the material accessible for everyone. The studio is clean, welcoming, and there's plenty of parking. They welcome all gi styles and colors, which adds to the inclusive and relaxed environment. If it's your first time and you don't have a gi, don't worry--come anyway! My family and I have been training at Kindred and can say that it has been an amazing experience. Their kids program is really great with instruction for all levels from beginners to longtime competitors. Kindred coaches are the best of the best. They make learning bjj fun while also running a tight ship. Students learn life values like respect, honor, hard work, doing your best, doing what's right, the importance of good hygiene, etc. The coaches are great communicators and know how to talk to kids. They are good role models and my son really looks up to them. They've even offered encouragement and advice when he talks to them about his life outside of bjj. The gym is well lit and always clean and the atmosphere is positive, encouraging, and focused. The parent community at kindred is also amazing and classes are available all the way from complete beginner to kids (and adults) who are seriously dedicated and competing at regional matches. The dark horse of activities for women: BJJ. This is the most fun I've ever had doing an activity. People here are unfailingly kind and positive, with a zest for self improvement and willingness to share their time and expertise. There's a class for pretty much anything: self defense, beginner, women's, gi or no gi, or just weekend open mat. Two things kept me away before: 1) cutting my nails and 2) I thought my body wouldn't be able to take it. 1) was awful but getting hooked fixed that and 2) was apparently an unfounded concern with such caring people. 11/10 recommend. read more

My Jiu Jitsu school of record is at the Gracie University in Torrance, Calif, but since I travel a lot, I like to do drop-in classes when possible on the road. I scheduled an online class which was immediately addressed and welcomed by the owner of the school (which is a good sign). When I arrived I was cordially welcomed by the instructor, Craig Hanaumi and shown the dress area which was roomy and comfortable. An assessment of the school proved that it was clean, orderly and possessed good feng shui. Once I entered the mats, I was cordially welcomed by the students and felt immediately at home. Craig's instruction and delivery method was very clear, concise and informative. We were shown an array of moves and drilled them until we all flowed as one. The class as a whole was very fulfilling and rewarding. I would definitely recommend this school to anyone who's interested in BJJ self defense. My favorite jiu-jitsu academy in the whole world. From my very first day, five years ago, I've felt so welcome and happy here. Everyone was and is so kind and helpful and patient. The space is always clean and organized and the curriculum is constantly improving and expanding. There are a lot more classes offered now than there were when I first started and it's been so much fun to watch the place grow. Monthly membership is extremely reasonable, especially considering how many classes are offered each day, and the instructors are beyond wonderful. My daughter (9) trains here too, and it's made such a difference not only in her confidence, but also in my peace of mind. If anyone were to ask me for an academy recommendation, especially in Edmonds, for whatever reason (e.g. self defense, sport, gi, no gi, family class, Muay Thai, advanced, beginner fundamentals, kids, teens, free, weekly women's self defense class, etc), this is the recommendation that I would give, wholeheartedly. I've never regretted attending a class here. In fact, no matter what's going on in my life, I've always left class feeling better. 10/10 would recommend. read more

I have been training and Gracie Barra of Edmonds for almost 2 years. Prior to that I have been training Aikido for 6 years. I cannot think of a more applicable martial art for self-defense, but it is so much more than that. They have accepted me as family there is not one person that I have an issue with. My whole family now trains at GB Edmonds. My kids enjoy the training they go 3 days a week. They have some cleaver games that they have the kids play and the kids don't realize they are actually learning valuable techniques. The atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. I do have to drag them their at times but they never leave saying they didn't have a great time. The Coaches are excellent and my kids get all the instruction they need and also the independence to practice their techniques against their peers. read more

Edmonds Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a gem of a place to train. Because I live on the opposite side of Seattle, I am only able to train here occasionally. Every time I stop by, Griff and John, the head instructors of the school, make me feel right at home, and they always take time to do some sparring with me and give me some useful insight on how to improve. Because Griff and John are such skilled and friendly instructors, they have created a gym whose members are always enjoyable to train with. Many of the members began training at this gym, and have worked their way up the Jiu Jitsu ranks and are now quite skilled. This gym would be the perfect place to either start your Jiu Jitsu journey, or if you already have lots of experience, to sharpen your skills. read more

I trained at Edmonds Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, AKA: Gracie Barra Edmonds for a little over two years. Prior to arriving on their mats, I had trained BJJ at other schools in the Renton/Kent area. I was referred to Edmonds BJJ by my coach from another BJJ affiliation because of the owners' reputation in the BJJ community. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed not only by the instructors, but by all of the other students. The atmosphere was, and still is very relaxed and casual. During class, the instructors walk around and take time to ensure every student understand not just what is being taught, but the principles behind the movement, positioning, and control. The instruction at Edmonds BJJ is easily at least on par with what you'd find at other BJJ schools. The classes offer a good amount of full body exercise and teach valuable lessons of self defense and problem solving that translate into every day life. Unfortunately I moved away to Maple Valley and am no longer able to regularly attend classes at Edmonds, though I still make the journey up to train every now and then, and when I do I always feel welcomed as if I'd never left. I'd recommend Edmonds to anyone interested in learning jiu jitsu. If you're looking to get into better shape or learn an effective martial art, and make some new friends along the way, this is the place for you. I started only a short while ago on a whim. I was looking for something to break up my normal workout routine and discovered this school in Firdale Village. Having no experience, I was slightly intimidated when I first walked through the door to check the gym out. My reservations and doubts were cast aside after I was welcomed by Griff and the rest of the class. Everybody was very cool, making it a very inviting place to those of different backgrounds and physical abilities. I strongly encourage anybody to drop by Edmonds BJJ for a class.
