Woodinville Martial Arts cares about not just you as a student but you as an individual. As an adult student, we have a great time. I have been gently pushed beyond what I thought, or what society felt, I could do and it has led me to push myself even more. If you are looking for a martial arts that will make you feel welcome and like you are part of the family then look no more...this is the place.

I started training at Woodinville Martial Arts in 1997. Having experience as a teacher, I found the…read morecurriculum at WMA to be very straight forward. You learn your hand techniques, foot techniques, forms, Weapon self defense/form, and self-defense. Everything is sequential and relevant to real world situations. The instructors and senior students are excellent instructors, encourage you to do your best, but most of all, very patient. They know that we all come to class with different skill sets, and they bring out the very best in each of us through encouragement , step by step instructions, and review. As with any skill, you observe, start slowly trying to repeat the motions, help each other through the learning process, realize the application of that technique, and then practice, practice and practice. Once you have demonstrated mastery of that skill, technique or form, you are encouraged to help others within the class. The classes are structured based on age. From children as young as 4(?) to students as old as 75 plus! We train in our groups and classes. Adults train together, Teens have their classes, Children have their own class times, etc... With in the classes, it is not uncommon to have students of similar belts work together to master their skills. We all are familiar with Martial Arts Schools who say they are Black Belt Schools, no mercy, that kind of stuff, but Woodinville Martial Arts is different. Every student has the opportunity to learn, to test, and to advance in ranking. The owners, who are also the instructors, know that people learn at different rates, and surprisingly, have lives outside of school. There is no pressure to test, but if you decide to do so, you will get all the help you need in order to reach your goals, I enjoyed training here so much, I enrolled my 6 year old son. He thoroughly loved it, and by the time he was a 9th grader, he was an experienced Black Belt! He got there before me! Having just retired from the Northshore School District as a classroom teacher (44 years), I know quality teaching when I see it. I have seen nothing but respect, and kindness from the Instructors and Senior Students toward all members of the school. From the training classes, testing, outside of school activities and friendships made, you will be hard pressed to find a Martial Arts school that is any better.

2 stars is from my point of view, but others may like this more than me…read more The workouts are mediocre and there is very minimal instruction. The class is split in a typical way: 1-2min warm up, 20min conditioning, 20min kickboxing, 1-2min cool down Primary reasons for 2 stars: -Conditioning is always boring, and this conditioning is so mundane with no energy from the instructor. Typically the the instructor demonstrates 3-5 exercises and the class simply repeats them for the entire 20 minutes. During that time, you're going at your own pace (which some people may like). I would look around the room each class and everyone had issues with their form. Instructor didn't say anything - so I started wondering, how bad am I performing these exercises? I'd never know - there is no instruction and very little encouragement. I like when I am reminded of good form, encouraged to "dig deeper" etc. But 20 minutes just repeating the same small loop of exercises is just so boring. I kept asking myself, what am I paying for? -Kickboxing portion is very short, often uninspired routines. I also didn't have much left after pushing myself to do ~150 jump squats during 20mins of conditioning on a loop. I fell in love with kickboxing at a gym that was run by a retired military vet. He was so energetic and loved created interesting combinations and really brought the sport alive. The instructor here timidly provides you a demonstration and then you repeat (like normal), but I found it all so very dull. -Topping it off, the music is tiresome. I'm an elder millennial and sure I love me some 2000s-2010s poppy club music but the playlists had the most over played songs I'm still sick of in 2024. I usually don't care what the music is in a workout class, but given the lack of inspiration from the instructor or interesting exercises I was desperate to draw inspiration from anywhere. Also, the facility is very "just okay." It's pretty clean (not sure how often floor mats are cleaned though...). Parking is very easy. Furthermore, I HATED the marketing interaction from the company itself. They send the worst, cringely e-mails and text messages on a regular basis. I was so happy once I could block them all. (If you block them while taking classes, you can't receive any notices about the classes.) And their "limited promo" on their website is always there (intro 3 classes like ~$30). Classes are just about worth $10/ea but the regular price is +$25/class for their packages (as of Aug 2024). The only good thing I can say about the place is that the other people attending the class are very nice and sweet people. The instructor is a nice, friendly person but simply not the type of class leader I'd like to have.

Each class may vary depending on the workout and instructor/trainer. It also feels more like you are working with a personal trainer. The instructors/trainers are knowledgeable and experienced in fitness. They push you to push yourself out of your comfort zone, and invested in your success. The Woodinville Kickboxing community is amazing too because everyone is supportive and inspirational. You aren't just a member but part of a family. This is an intense workout, no matter what fitness level you are at. Each time you walk into class you are able to do more weights and reps; and improve on your jabs, upper cuts, hooks, front kicks, side kicks, back kicks and round houses. I've gained so much strength and endurance since I started in 2015. I love my Woodinville Kickboxing family! #squadgoals #woodinvillekickboxingfamily #strongertogether #badasses

Super friendly and they learned more than just martial art. Master Kwon taught them how to respect others and listen to parents. Then Master Kwon moved away for a bit (a couple years). My son ended up joining and his friend didn't, which was kind of funny since he was the one who suggested it. As my son continued, I thought it looked like so much fun so I joined in too. Master Kwon and Instructor Kwon is a husband and wife team and they are so kind and nice. They push the kids to be respectful, focused, confident and kind. They are true role models for these kids as well as the adults. They are also very precise and position their students exactly where their hands need to be and where their foot placement should be. They also build up the kids confidence, and it's like night and day. We have watched so many kids grow from these shy and almost meek kids into confident and strong children. The great thing as well is that they don't teach the kids to "fight". They teach them self defense, respect, kindness and discipline. They have a 5 stripe system where the kids can earn a trophy at each belt test if they do 5 tasks. 1) read 14 books, 2) do 10 chores a day for 60 days, 3) teacher sign off for their schooling, 4) testing for their form and 5) parent sign off of their papers to get the last stripe. And that last stripe is a goal that the parents can set for their kids. It's a great system and it makes sure that the kids study, are kind to their teachers and other kids at school, they do their chores at home, and are respectful to their parents and siblings. My son even started doing competitions which he didn't want to do at first. After some encouragement by myself and the Kwons, he finally decided to enter into a competition. He was really nervous at first, but now after 2 competitions under his belt, he has built up a lot of confidence and is now excited to continue entering into more competitions. I can't say enough about Master and Instructor Kwon. They are so nice, kind and sweet. They are very inspiring and our lives are so much better from learning from their example.

Let me start by saying this isn't my first time trying Crossfit…read more I was introduced to Crossfit by my husband who's a big enthusiast, and we first went to a gym when we were living in California, people were nice enough but everyone seemed to do everything like a pro and I felt pretty discouraged that I wasn't at that level yet, so my first Crossfit experience lasted a couple of months. Then at the beginning of this year, I decided to give it another shot at Crossfit Bothell. The first thing that was different was the fact that I joined their foundations class, where I learned what each movement and each exercise was supposed to look like, and ways to scale it down in case I couldn't do that yet. Another thing is the coaches are SO. NICE. We usually go in the evenings, and all of our coaches: Andrew, Peter, Rodrigo and Lincoln are the best. They push you when you need to be pushed, but it's always done in a nice and friendly way, and they encourage you to scale down when needed. They also have olympic weightlifting classes, Lincoln teaches this class on Tuesdays and Fridays, and while I was a bit hesitant at first, now I'm a big fan. We've made a lot of friends at Crossfit, it's now been 10 months and I can see myself staying in Crossfit Bothell for a long time. Tips: go the foundations class, and if, like me, you like working out with your partner, ask for the couples membership!
