He is disciplined, strategic and very focused and sincere in his teachings. This is not a school that is there for a fad or just skimming over karate, Sensei really cares about his students and is deeply devoted to Karate. I was a blue belt, woman, but he did not differentiate between me or the brown or black belts. We were taught with the same diligence and respect. I remember I was even made to spar with brown/blue belts which increased my focus and confidence. Also, there were exercises at the end of class and all of us, were made to do those together. If I ever get back into Karate I will go back to this dojo. I wish more people could discern the difference between a mediocre teacher and a really sincere and devoted teacher like Sensei Minakami. Like others have said, they are not here to collect money but really are interested and sincere about imparting a good teaching in Karate. It is definitely worth going there and getting at least one lesson because that will give you a good idea of what this dojo is all about. I must also compare this dojo to the one I went to in Bothell which was horrible. Why? Because the Sensei (teacher) himself was very arrogant and harsh, even with kids. He was very brusque and you could tell that if you pushed him a bit he could get violent. I am glad I have experienced the previous dojo because that really put me off and I could appreciate Minakami even more. Especially as a woman, if you feel you intimidated, this is one dojo where you will be respected and not considered to be too "weak" for other tough exercises or katas. Sensei's daughter is also a black belt I believe so he has first hand experience with mentoring women.

Posting on behalf of my wife and son We love the passion,…read moreskill and dedication that Shihan and Sensei bring to class everyday. Students greatly benefit in this environment where karate is the primary focus along with respect, discipline etc. Other places make you sign contracts etc...Not this one. In fact they even offered us trial classes to evaluate fit and get a feel of the environment. We have been going since 2017 and highly recommend Eastside Kyokushin.

I've been training with Eastside Kyokushin since early 2007 - that being said, my perspective is of…read morea long-term student. This dojo has come a long way from training in a park, out of a house, renting space from an Aikido dojo to having our own dedicated dojo space. I've researched cross-training and I've come to realize it's incredibly rare to find a place to train that isn't commercialized and profit driven. Eastside Kyokushin is a registered non-profit - there are no contracts, hidden fees or strings attached. The monthly dues are incredibly low ($50/mo.) You show up, sign a standard waiver, train hard and learn something new. Training is largely made up of challenging cardio workouts, basics, kata, self-defense and sparring. One notable difference from us vs. most other karate dojos you'll find is; we are full contact and primarily don't use pads. This is a deal breaker for some, but you need to be okay with not only hitting/kicking an opponent but being hit/kicked in return. We train for practicality and we adapt based on your experience, so if you have no experience you'll start with the basics. The bottom line is whether you're looking to get into better shape, learn self-defense, how to be a fighter or just to expand your current skillset you can't go wrong with Eastside Kyokushin.

This was a big part of my daughter's life for eight years - she began here when she was ten. Once she turned eighteen, she was approached by her Sensei and mentor for nearly half her life, in a way that turned everything she had learned at the dojo and trusted for eight years completely around. She learned that other members were also approached by this Sensei in the same vile way. If this dojo is a consideration for your children, conduct due diligence before enrolling them - this is the smartest and best thing you can do for your child and you will be thankful you did. If your child is currently enrolled, please become aware and reevaluate your choice; you don't want your child to suffer the way my daughter and other students have. Behavior such as this does not change. Even if the girls are not approached until they are older, this is the mindset of the Sensei that is working with them, hands-on, year after year, until his he decides to turn their world upside down.
