One of my proudest moments in life was when I joined the Washington Shotokan Association Dojo. The dojo is a delightful spotless and clean, dedicated facility with a floating wood floor and large changing rooms with showers. It's a great place to learn traditional Japanese karate and grow as a person with smart, gracious, and learned educators. they are profoundly dedicated to their students. You can enjoy adult and youth programs. Whether you are looking for a good workout that will teach you self-defense or want an activity for the kids that will teach them discipline and respect while keeping them physically active, WSA dojo is the perfect choice. I had the opportunity to attend different classes with different instructors. At anytime I was very happy to learn to practice differently, something is important to have the passion, and need to learn with love, feeling and respect, you'll never regret. I'm thankful to every one of the educators, senseis, sempais, and understudies I had the delight of meeting in every one of the classes I joined in. All those memories stay alive forever. I continue training nonstop, keeping in my mind and in practice the principles of the repeated Dojo Kun: * Seek perfection of character * Be Faithful * Endeavor * Respect others * Refrain from violent behavior Oss! I hope return to train with you, with my family WSA, soon. With warmest regards, Miloud B.

I trained here for years before becoming a children's instructor, which was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Koei Kan Martial Arts Academy in Bellevue is the kind of place that becomes a part of your family, a place where you sweat, where you push yourself, where you grow, and where you learn. One of the most unique things about this dojo is that often families train together, kids and parents of all ages side by side. It really is a place for family, and it's changed my life.

This is an awesome dojo, and can't say enough good things about this place…read more This dojo is definitely more on the fighting/kumite side of karate, while other traditional aspects of karate are taught, everything with this style goes back to kumite/fighting in the end. Sparring is freeform and rarely point although point fighting is taught as it's apart of the system. They also practice bogu kumite which if your unfamiliar with I suggest looking it up! The sensei's/students are very mindful about limitations and will meet you wherever you are. Throws/take downs and ground fighting are also heavily focused on. Many students cross train in this system and bjj, the school also hosts bjj(gi/no gi) events and often hold training events with other styles. Again everyone is super mindful of limiations/experience and will meet you where you're at. On the lighter side kata (empty hand and weapons) are also taught and comes from a shudokan/shuri-te background. Bunkai (application of kata), nage (throws/takedowns/self defense techniques) are also taught and focused on. To sum it all up, this dojo is great no matter where you are in martial arts (new or experienced), great for kids/family's too, and offer flexible training times throughout the day. It's well worth checking out!

If you have questions, everyone is eager to help. The location is tucked away in between several car dealerships so it can be easy to miss, but usually there is a sign out by the road advertising the free trial class. I really wish more people knew about it! It's my favorite part of the week. :)

I searched and searched and tried many Yoga and martial arts teachers. Most people I met are either out there to purely make money, or even with the best of intentions, are clueless and not properly trained to be masters. Finally ran into Shifu Zhou about a year ago and I consider it my extremely good luck. In the plethora of martial arts teachers, Shifu Zhou, stands above all like a titan. He is a truly authentic Kungfu and Qi-Gong master who came to Seattle on a mission to teach the mysterious and powerful arts of Shaolin. I go to the academy 5 times a week and learn both Kungfu and Qi-Gong. My health has improved tremendously. My allergies are significantly down. My gut issues are under control. And I have found a life-long sport to play. When I was doing hot yoga, I was having at-least one muscle or joint injury a month. Frankly I was expecting lot more injuries while playing Shaolin. Interestingly enough, and knock on wood, I have had zero major injuries since I started. A lot of credit goes to Shifu Zhou. He knows each of his student's condition intimately. He is very patient and kind and takes extra pre-cautions to make sure that people are safe while practicing. I absolutely recommend Shifu Zhou without reservation to anyone who wants to improve their health and learn a life-long skill of Shaolin Kungfu.

This dojo has come a long way from training in a park, out of a house, renting space from an Aikido dojo to having our own dedicated dojo space. I've researched cross-training and I've come to realize it's incredibly rare to find a place to train that isn't commercialized and profit driven. Eastside Kyokushin is a registered non-profit - there are no contracts, hidden fees or strings attached. The monthly dues are incredibly low ($50/mo.) You show up, sign a standard waiver, train hard and learn something new. Training is largely made up of challenging cardio workouts, basics, kata, self-defense and sparring. One notable difference from us vs. most other karate dojos you'll find is; we are full contact and primarily don't use pads. This is a deal breaker for some, but you need to be okay with not only hitting/kicking an opponent but being hit/kicked in return. We train for practicality and we adapt based on your experience, so if you have no experience you'll start with the basics. The bottom line is whether you're looking to get into better shape, learn self-defense, how to be a fighter or just to expand your current skillset you can't go wrong with Eastside Kyokushin.

He is disciplined, strategic and very focused and sincere in his teachings. This is not a school that is there for a fad or just skimming over karate, Sensei really cares about his students and is deeply devoted to Karate. I was a blue belt, woman, but he did not differentiate between me or the brown or black belts. We were taught with the same diligence and respect. I remember I was even made to spar with brown/blue belts which increased my focus and confidence. Also, there were exercises at the end of class and all of us, were made to do those together. If I ever get back into Karate I will go back to this dojo. I wish more people could discern the difference between a mediocre teacher and a really sincere and devoted teacher like Sensei Minakami. Like others have said, they are not here to collect money but really are interested and sincere about imparting a good teaching in Karate. It is definitely worth going there and getting at least one lesson because that will give you a good idea of what this dojo is all about. I must also compare this dojo to the one I went to in Bothell which was horrible. Why? Because the Sensei (teacher) himself was very arrogant and harsh, even with kids. He was very brusque and you could tell that if you pushed him a bit he could get violent. I am glad I have experienced the previous dojo because that really put me off and I could appreciate Minakami even more. Especially as a woman, if you feel you intimidated, this is one dojo where you will be respected and not considered to be too "weak" for other tough exercises or katas. Sensei's daughter is also a black belt I believe so he has first hand experience with mentoring women.
