Now 2 months and 20+ classes in, I'm consistently happy I joined the BJJ Combatives program at NAK2…read moreAcademy. I've taken classes taught by every instructor -- their instructions are clear and they always put an emphasis on safety and care. The instructors quickly troubleshoot each student's execution of the techniques and provide individualized tips or customizations to accommodate individual strengths or weaknesses (e.g., a less flexible back, etc.). Often, the instructors will demonstrate the technique 1:1, showing how a correct execution should feel -- super helpful. I've trained with many other students so far, and I've experienced that same caring energy and focus on teaching from each of them. The techniques are also available online with great emphasis on detail, which further eases and accelerates learning both before and after class. The sessions are simultaneously challenging, enjoyable, intellectually stimulating, and a great workout. Also big thanks to coach Ben, with whom I've trained the most -- a fantastic teacher! NAK2 is an excellent team to train and learn BJJ with, and I couldn't be more excited about this gym and their classes.

Both Casey and Jon mentored me in my 1st year of training and got me ready for my first…read morecompetition. Casey quickly became like a big brother to me with teaching his philosophy on jiu jitsu and how the challenges we face on the mats equip us to improve our lives, which is something I have great interest in. He taught me many techniques and communicated in a way to help me understand his lessons. He also tested me when I needed it with the appropriate level of challenge. From the first class I enjoyed with him leading, to the weekly private sessions I hired him for, I recognized and appreciated his solid leadership abilities and deep enthusiasm for the art. Jon is another great practioner/teacher and started helping out close to my competition. He helped me start to develop a game plan and conceptual understanding of bjj competition. His approach was slightly different than Casey in good ways and helped me see the quality of what black belts at our academy represent. Confidence, leadership, honor, work ethic and grit are a few words to describe these two and all the other professors (black belts) at the surrounding GB schools. If you want to develop your character, learn one of the best self-defense arts, and have fun with like minded folks join us on the mats! There's nothing like the community you will be apart of.

To be honest, 5 stars isn't enough. My family has been coming here for the last 4 years. That's just to name a few benefits. You can't go wrong giving this wonderful jiu jitsu gym a try. What stands them apart is not only the live training to gain real life skills, but the encouragement and leadership of the professors. The professors also donate their time to the community--they truly care.

I had planned a work trip up to Seattle and I usually try to find a school nearby to counter all…read morethe sodium heavy company meals and drinks that I expect on work trips. Midnight Jiu-Jitsu was nowhere near the offices I needed to visit nor my hotel. Honestly, what intrigued me was the non-profit model that Midnight had and they allow you a free week's trial, again a week is usually very generous by most school standards and usually for absolute newbs; it's sometimes a nice surprise not to pay for a drop-in or mat fee but you shouldn't expect it, it's a business, respect that. The evening of class, I tried to get there early, evening fighting through rush hour traffic. What I didn't count on was how f'ing difficult it was to find parking. I grabbed my gear bag and ran into class about 15 minutes late. I knew from their website that they gave permission to come late or leave early. As background, depending on the school coming late is anywhere from a minor faux pas to an egregious trespass. Despite knowing this, I was expecting to just sit out and just watch or knock out burpees or push ups. Instead, someone came over when there was a break in the class. I got briefed on what to do and was allowed to change in the back and join the class. Tom and Aaron were there but they just said to call them by their names, again depending on the school titles are a big thing. The class was fun, the rolls were challenging and I learned a couple things. Moreover, I stuck around until closing and got to just sit and chat with Aaron and apologize for my lateness which was totally brushed off as not a big deal. If I'm ever visiting again, I'm going to head back up there-it was enjoyable physically, mentally and socially.
