Was in town for a few weeks visiting from New York. I train at the main New York Renzo Gracie Headquarters so was excited to visit this location and roll with some new folks. I was graced with amazing instructors Fred and Josh who taught great classes with strong focus on fundamentals and lots of takedowns. Loved the balance and pace of the classes. We focused on grip fighting, level changing, and movement just to start off the class. It then went into takedown practice, move of the day, drilling, and finally rolling. A lot of information packed into 1.5 hours of class. The community is great and everyone is here to learn and to sweat while helping each other improve. If you're in Seattle and want the best detailed instruction, look no further. Fred and Josh are great instructors that will take your game to the next level. They also provide you with a well rounded curriculum of stand up including Judo and wrestling along with the experience to help you refine your technique. A lot of places separate out judo and wrestling, but I feel that they have found the best way to teach app aspects of the game without overwhelming you. In town for work - Went for a drop-in beginner class (I think the Yelp address is listed incorrectly, but if you go to their website it should be correct). Professor Josh was super cool; good warmups and drills to get the flow going, then nice technical instruction for the move-of-the-day. Plenty of reps to get the technique down. Good rolls (Professor matches you up so there's some structure) Everyone was super friendly; good vibes all around! The space is cozy, so be aware when rolling. If you bring a pair of slides/shower shoes, it will help a lot. Worth packing your gi to train here; I'll definitely try to go again. read more

I joined Renzo Gracie Seattle after I moved back to Seattle and was instantly welcomed by everyone. I tried three other gyms before landing this gem. Instructors Fred and Josh made me feel supported and safe, and as a young woman in a male-dominated sport, this really meant a lot. I joined Renzo Gracie a few weeks ago to learn BJJ (I'm brand new to martial arts), and it's been a really fantastic experience these past few weeks. The coaches - Fred and Josh - create a welcoming atmosphere for students of all levels and really care about building a community of students. They're great teachers, emphasize technique and details, and encourage students to ask lots of questions during class which I really appreciate. The class is super friendly - honestly everyone I've met is willing to help out new people and even proactively give tips on how to improve which is super cool. I forgot how to tie my belt like the first two classes and people (shoutout to Blake) were super helpful with even small stuff like that. And if it wasn't clear already, it's a ton of fun! This is my first martial arts gym and I couldn't feel more welcome! I moved to Seattle earlier this year and I needed something to get me out of the apartment. Fred and Josh are attentive and patient guides and the other students are all awesome people. If you're thinking about giving Jiu Jitsu a shot this is a great community to join. I came here in October after moving to Ballard--couldn't be happier with the gym. The instructors are black and brown belts who studied under Renzo Gracie and John Danaher, which is about as good as lineage gets in jiu jitsu. They teach a style that's both fundamentally sound and modern. Classes are a mix of stand up and ground, which is rare for jiu jitsu schools nowadays. I came in as a purple belt and I've already become a more well rounded grappler. Overall, the gym has good people and a good vibe which is all that matters. Highly recommended. read more

My gauge of a good gym is how they treat newbies. I love jiu-jitsu so much that I urged my brother to give it a try. Unfortunately, he tried at another BJJ gym where they had him start rolling on his trial class without any explanations of even basic principles as guard or shrimping. He not only felt lost and confused; he was literally and figuratively crushed by that first experience. In contrast, Fred and Josh clearly make an effort to ensure that new-comers and advanced members are always treated respectfully and according to their ability. So, if you like to show everyone who's boss and crush everyone, I'd say this is not the place for you. If you want to learn jiu-jitsu and help your teammates at the gym learn as well, this is the place for you. read more

I really enjoyed my time training at Renzo Gracie when I was up in Seattle for work. On the first day the instructors introduced me to everyone and made me feel very welcome. The instructors Fred and Josh are really great people and have a lot of knowledge to share. They do an exceptional job of accommodating both beginners and more advanced students. I liked that they offered both Gi and No-Gi classes in the same day, and also that they believe in the importance of take downs in training. So I am not new to BJJ and I travel alot for work so I usually bring my rashy to train. My first impression of the gym is its cleanliness. They have shower facility and plenty of change rooms. Both professor Fred and Josh are very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the wrestling with professor Josh. Tonight, professor Fred taught us rubber guard escape to pass which was new to me. So nice too visit a good gym to learn something totally new. I have to point out that this is the first gym I have visited in a long time and the professors make you feel welcomed. I was well matched with training partners my skill level so it was very safe. Even the training partners there are friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend RGA Seattle. I have gone to Renzo Gracie Seattle since their previous location in Fremont. The new location makes for much easier parking, and a huge new mat to roll on. Instruction from Fred & Josh is second to none. The are both excellent instructors, and both masters at their craft. When they say all levels are welcome, you can believe it. We have some killers on the mat, but as someone who is out of shape and working with problems of my own I can say they're both just as enthusiastic to help me out. My team mates are top notch and we are always learning something new together. I would recommend anyone looking to improve themselves to give our gym a try read more
