this is the best gym in Seattle by far! Highly recommend for any skill level to try it out!

Best gym in seattle, Coach ivan, Jose and Bano are the best coaches ive ever had. Very welcoming everyone is super nice.

Best gym ever ever ever ever. Come here if you want to get better at every martial art that you want.

coach's are great very welcoming and funny, ive learned a lot here and it's a very good learning environment

WIN.

The other 1 stars are babies who never been to a real MMA gym. If you are looking for something that is real deal, partners that are gentle and aware and dangerous but synchronized with your level then this is a good place for you. This is one of the last few gyms you'll find dedicated to hard work and dedication, with that old school toughness still left in it. I am no new person, but I am new here. Whether I take beginner or advanced means no difference. If you are beginner people recognize that, and if you are upper levels then you will find people willing to go with you at whatever pace you feel. Idk what the other review of the guy saying they spar hard was about because they don't. It's an MMA gym. You choose essentially what pace you spar anyone at. There also are unspoken laws in gyms, no matter where in the U.S you go, if you land me something hard, and I'm not going at that pace you best believe I'm going to light you like a candle. Beginner or not. It has Bjj, KB, Muay Thai, wrestling, it's got whatever you need to handle yourself. It's really up to you to not be an idiot and make good decisions and get better. Get good sleep, eat right, run on days off, be healthy and you'll be fine. If you're thinking of joining, join and dive in. Don't feel scared, there is no conditioning like fighting conditioning. So no amount of miles will prepare you for your hard classes. Thankfully, they have beginner classes for you to work up. You're welcome read more

I believe this might be the best MMA gym on the entire west coast. Make that the best martial arts gym as well, given how rare it is to find realistic sparring allowing simultaneous striking and grappling in any gym of any style. Cons: Many people in the MMA class spar harder than I would like. There's a risk of brain damage unless you have the right partner. Sometimes when telling people to go lighter on the head they would turn it down by 0.1 notches and go full blast on the body and legs. Since I'm skinny I often had to take a timeout when I took a liver shot. One guy also said "don't teep if you don't want to go hard". In reality a teep is only disrespectful if it's to the face, and I confirmed with coach Ivan about this just to make sure, although I also made a mental note to never teep that specific guy in the body either. One time a guy wearing soft (less protective) shin guards kicked me so hard in the leg that I could barely walk for the next 2 days. The only reason I'm not mad is it was a weekend where I didn't plan to train, and at least he kicked the right spot and didn't put my knee at risk. In BJJ someone tapped to my arm bar (which I've done hundreds of times with no issues), and I let go immediately, but the next instant he was screaming as if he'd been injured, and scolded me for not being careful enough. His arm was never fully extended at any point in time, meaning I hadn't even started cranking yet. Then suddenly two people were very eager to roll with me and went pretty hard, presumably to keep me line, though they were very nice about it afterwards. His arm was completely fine and he also turned out to be a nice partner in the Judo class. I still don't know what happened, but I suspect a muscle strain mistaken as joint pain. Pros: Unlike like some MMA gyms who only offer BJJ and muay thai separately and call it "MMA", this is a real MMA gym with real MMA classes. That specific class called "MMA" isn't open to everyone and prior experience is required, but if you can get into that class, treasure every moment because it's super legit. This is the kind of training you can't find in the constituent styles: Wall wrestling, ground and pound situationals, full MMA rules, dirty boxing, etc. with a diverse selection of partners ranging from novice to expert level. Coach Ivan is very involved in his classes. He leads two of the MMA classes and also visits many of the other classes such as BJJ and wrestling. One time he even wrestled with us in the wrestling class. He also noticed my preference for Judo takedowns and gave me tips on how to fix certain issues if he saw a particular technique didn't work for me sometimes. That's a hallmark of a good coach IMO; they polish your strengths and build up your style rather than try to convince me to focus exclusively on doubles and single legs (which is what a previous coach did). I had to laugh about the other reviewer describing the wrestling coach as a drill sergeant. It's perfectly accurate! But being ridiculously loud isn't the same as being a dick. He's actually very friendly as well. Last but not least just the fact they have wrestling and Judo classes speaks volumes, as many other MMA gyms would rather leave takedowns and takedown defense as an afterthought. Also, they take sanitization seriously. They mop the mats and wait for it to dry between each class. All in all I'm quite pleased by my experience here and will definitely be back whenever I'm in the area. read more

Do not come here unless you are desperate. There are much better places to train in Seattle. I trained here a few years ago and found that the people are not friendly at all. The wrestling coach at the time was either a total dick, or else a former Marine Drill Instructor who just likes to yell at people, and Ivan himself teaches terrible striking technique. If you want to get better at point karate this is a good gym, but they really have no idea how to knock a man out and cannot teach you how to do that. When I trained there I saw Ivan in the gym a total of 4 times of 6 months, and twice he was just stopping by to look things over. Before several of the boxing classes I participated in, some of the more experienced students would huddle together and argue over who had to teach the class. I came back recently to see if anything changed. I got a nice welcome from the person at the front desk, but that's where the welcoming vibe ended. I recall one of the female students told Ivan she was experiencing cramps, to which Ivan replied: "I don't trust anything that bleeds every month but doesn't die from it." Perhaps they have the kind of relationship where that is considered a funny joke, but she didn't laugh. Maybe it was the cramps? As a bonus, they raised their membership fees and are now totally over-priced. You'll get friendlier training for less money somewhere else. read more

If you live in the Seattle area and don't train at Ivan's gym, you're crazy. I've always been a nerd. I was too busy playing video games to get any exercise until I was 22 or so. By all accounts, I should not be training at an MMA gym. I should be at home watching Star Trek while test-rolling 12-sided dice looking for statistical anomalies to exploit in future D&D games. (Disclaimer: I don't actually watch Star Trek or partake in D&D. I really am a nerd, though, I swear.) I've been training at Ivan's gym for over a year now, and I'm still a nerd, but I'm a lot better at tackling people and choking them. I think I'm one of the few nerds. There are some guys at Ivan's who do amateur and professional fights. There are also guys who just train recreationally, like me. And we're a lot tougher than we would be otherwise. There are some girls who train here too, though they are certainly in the minority. The gym has exactly the right mix of professionalism and laid back-ness. If you've been a part of any other gym or exercise class, you know how difficult it is to achieve that balance. The atmosphere is pretty gung-ho, and Ivan is demanding of his fighters, but no one is going to bully you or play status games. And the advanced students won't try to hurt you just because they can. Basically, you get a great workout, and you learn how to fight (with multiple classes for wrestling, kickboxing, etc.) in a friendly environment that still pushes you to your limits. If you just want to lose weight or get in shape, that happens here too. And instead of losing weight half through boredom on treadmills, you lose it fighting for your life. (Disclaimer: as far as I know, no lives have been lost at Ivan's. I meant "fight for your life" like in that song Hulk Hogan used to come out to. And you'll be able to kick Hulk Hogan's ass after just one or two classes at Ivan's.) There's a reason this place has only 5-star reviews. In fact, I feel a bit ridiculous writing this one, because it's just obvious to most people who train at Ivan's how awesome it is. Okay, I need to stop now, because writing this review is getting me all amped up and I want to go wrestle someone. read more

HEY HEY, KIDS! this place is fuckin' awesome. you see the picture for this fuckin' place? that's ME grimacing like a huge pussy while i bridge! most gyms i've been to usually consist of a few cool coaches and a bunch of burly assholes who like to give you the stink-eye while you try and fit in. ivan's isn't like that in the least! the atmosphere here is great! ivan salaverry [UFC fighter and overall chilean badass] instructs classes himself, when he's not getting ready for a fight, and even when he's not teaching himself, he's got totally competent, capable people coaching in his stead [shoutout to brian, clint, matt, brandon, etc, etc]. sometimes you even get to see maurice smith! he's a nice guy, too, and surprisingly soft-spoken. the classes aren't for pussies, though, so be forewarned. if you're looking for a place to just get into shape/look good, you should probably sign up at kickboxing classes at the ymca-- clint and brian will put you through hell. be serious about what you're coming to learn and don't kill the vibe by being a hardass, either. my favorite part about going to this gym, though, is the playful banter that often goes around during the cool-down stretches: ivan will often heckle the fellow coaches and jokes are a-plenty. on ivan himself: he is one of the nicest, most intellectual, well-spoken, and informative fighters i've ever had the pleasure of meeting. hell, not even as a fighter-- as a person, too. he's a great coach with a wealth of knowledge [one of the best guards in mma!] and always remembers your face. the gym is a little on the pricey side, but you can make the most of your money by going mondays-fridays, 4-8pm. that's a lot of hours to put in, especially if your body can handle it [which it probably can't]. also, since this is a joey y review, i gots to say something about drinking: if you sit around and shoot the shit with the coaches and local fighters after hours, you get to hear the craziest drinking/party stories. mma'ists live the most fucking awesome lives ever. read more

I could give this school 3 stars but due to a flaky owner/instructor. Also the fact that stand in instructors do give you the stink eye if you are new. Bottomline is what sets this MMA gym apart from the rest? Nothing!! As far as membership $135 is pretty steep for the kind of instruction that I got. read more

I'm a 40 year-old tech worker who's been a weeknight warrior here for about two years. I came in with very limited exposure to martial arts; I was mainly looking for something more engaging than lifting weights and jogging as a fitness regimen. I've had a very positive experience here and recommend it highly. I've only participated in the grappling programs (wrestling and no-gi jiu-jitsu) but if you look at the schedule, there are many other programs as well as a full MMA curriculum for those who want to fight in the cage as an amateur or pro. At first, I wondered if the gym would be filled with scary, testosterone-addled Neanderthals with whom I'd have little in common. That turned out to be laughable; the membership skews significantly toward educated professionals and college students. The coaches, Ivan in particular, go out of their way to be inclusive, attentive, and encouraging to new people. There aren't as many women in the grappling classes (compared to boxing/kickboxing), but the women that come here are treated very respectfully - I would say even deferentially. The format of the grappling classes between warm-up and warm-down is about 60% instruction and drilling and 40% free rolling. The instruction has something for all ability levels. For example, for one class (or a multi-class series) will focus on a leg ride theme. The instruction will start with demonstration and drilling on the fundamentals of the position - setting up, transitioning into, and controlling a leg ride - and progress into three submissions of increasing sophistication starting with meat-and-potato submission moves like the banana split and ending up with the twister... and maybe some extra credit rubber guard stuff for those who want to explore that. This is an MMA gym, and like the sport itself, there aren't any belts or formal ability divisions. When drilling or sparring, class members organically organize to weight and ability level, but when we free roll in the last part of class, you will round-robin. If you pair up with someone much more skilled, they will tend to slow it down, play defense-only and give you some tips if you're open to it. In my time here, nobody has been remotely close to losing control or even just being a dick. The intensity of the grappling classes ebb and flow with the local tournament schedules. At first, I was just looking for fitness and I had no intention of competing, but when you've put in all the work and many of your training partners are coalescing into a competition team, there's almost no reason not to spend a Saturday afternoon testing your abilities in a tournament and cheering on your teammates. I hadn't competed formally in any sport since high school and found competition to be very inspiring and focusing. Hope to see you on the mats! read more

Came here for a free session during their open mat hours. From someone who hasn't done any martial arts training, I was pretty intimidated, but also eager to learn something. My friend introduced me to Cory, who's not an official instructor, but a regular at the gym. After a quick warm up and stretch we immediately went into basic positions (guard, half-guard, side control, mount) and where your body should be placed and what to watch for. He also showed us how to execute a triangle and a kimura. Next was boxing. There's a bunch of bags lined up against the windows, a majority of them for kicking, along with a couple speed bags, and a ring int he back of the gym. I was lucky enough to be able to spar for 2 round with Cory, and man, thinking goes out the window once you get hit. Everyone here, especially Cory, was extremely nice and very willing to slow down their pace to teach beginners step by step. You also get the feeling that this place is serious business, but also has a certain relaxed/layed back vibe. I was lucky so see Ivan Salaverry as well, he actually was the very first person to great me when I walked onto the mat. It is on the pricey side and the gym can get pretty crowed because of its smaller size. read more

I've trained here since 2008 and its hands down the best place to learn MMA, combat sports and get a good old fashioned work out in Seattle. Ivan, Johnny and Mo (Maurice Smith the world champion kick boxer) are great coaches and extremely friendly. What other place can you get world champions and former UFC fighters to train you on a daily basis? I came in as a novice and fit right in from the start. There is no "Intimidation" factor here if someone wanted to try this type of gym for the first time was thinking. In fact - it feels like a family here and you will be pleasantly surprised how helpful and cool everyone is. The main thing you have to consider is that Ivan's gym is extremely CLEAN, professional and has a full locker room/shower area. A lot of MMA, Boxing, BJJ gyms aren't set up like this. Honestly, if you live in Seattle and are considering an MMA gym, this IS the ONLY place you should consider. I HIGHLY recommend this place. read more

I've never done wrestling, kick boxing, jiu jitsu, boxing, submission wrestling, or any other type of martial art except tae kwon do when I was about 11. And I had no interest in getting fights. But none of that mattered to Ivan or any of the coaches. If you were in class, they were going to teach you. Workouts were some of the hardest workouts I've ever done, but there were people of all fitness levels. If you go in willing to work and learn the best you can, whatever that may be, you'll get great coaching, regardless of skill or fitness level. I went to all four classes (boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, and sub wrestling, although not in the same night) and they all provided great coaching and a great challenge despite my lack of experience. I didn't know what to expect from the other students there, but they were all awesome. Everyone there is trying to help everyone else learn and get better. Ivan and the coaches foster a great environment. The experienced guys don't just tee off on beginners. They work with you and push you to become better. All that being said, there were some pretty experienced guys looking for fights. They were challenged too and Ivan worked with them to get them fights and trained them to maximize their chance of winning. Facilities were always clean. I never saw anyone get hurt. Everyone is really friendly. I took a clean right hook to the head got a pretty good headache and stopped boxing for the day and nobody gave me any grief about it, they did care that I felt alright though. I imagine at some gyms people would give you crap for stopping, but they want everyone to be safe, learn, improve fitness, and have a good time. Bottom line is this place is pretty good for beginners looking to learn, good for experienced players looking for fights, and everyone in between. If your thinking about joining, DO IT. There was no downside to my experience. read more

With 15 fights under his belt (including 5 UFC), Ivan is just about as authentic and practical as it gets when it comes to Mixed Martial Arts training. But don't let his fearsome record scare you away if you're just getting started and aren't even sure you want to go near a ring: he's also a fantastic coach, and very invested in making sure his beginners have a safe, fun experience. You'll find all types at Ivan's gym: from folks who just want to learn some basic self defense, to those who enjoy tussling around with teammates, to those who are training for hardcore cage matches. All present, all welcome, no posturing. The facility is beautiful, the class offerings diverse and well-balanced, and the workouts are cardiovascularly intense. Great way to learn self defense, and a great way to get in shape. read more

This place is amazing. Ivan on top of having top notch fighting credentials, is an outstanding coach. Wether you are looking to compete in MMA or are new to fighting, Ivan and his experienced instructors will work with you so long as you continually work for it! For beginners, Ivan is patient with teaching new techniques and physical ability of students (not everyone who shows up here is in good shape). For advanced students, Ivan will push you to your limits and do his part to help you win your fight. What really sets him apart from other gyms is the mentoring he offers at any stage of your training wether it be nutritional advice, how to take care of injuries that occur on the way, or dealing with sponsors and venues if you get to that stage. The facilities are extremely clean (mats sterilized after every practice). No one that trains here has an attitude regardless of skill level. Everyone works to help better one another which creates a positive, professional, and productive environment to train in. Especially after seeing the other gyms in the area (AMC Pankration, Ringsports United) I wouldn't train anywhere else! read more

I've been to 3 to 6 classes at several other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms around Seattle, but once I stopped in at Ivan Salaverry, I realized I couldn't go anywhere else. As a petite female fighter, circus athlete, and yogi, I am physically educated and strong enough that I don't need to be treated like crystal. At other gyms, I could tell they were trying to protect me from injury and lowering the intensity in order to be welcoming or something. Unfortunately they did that without asking what *I* wanted. So I felt like I was talked down to or patronized. It sucked! Once I entered the door at Ivan's, they had me doing the same drills as all the other people. I even grappled on my first class - light rolls, but completely freestyle and with a variety of partners of different sizes. Now that I've been attending for the majority of 2016, I can't imagine stopping my membership here. I've made several friends among the staff and gym membership. I've started watching UFC with the team. I've gotten better at BJJ and no-gi grappling, experimented with Muay Thai and boxing, and even in spite of one serious injury (a total accident and for sure 50% my fault), I am 100% addicted. Ivan's also a great guy - super welcoming, happy to explain anything and answer questions - and he hires good people. Ask for Paul or Serge if you go there, Paul's the manager and is super on top of things, while Serge is my favorite BJJ instructor. read more

I've been attending classes at ISMMA for about 1.5 years. They have an extremely knowledgeable and supportive staff, all with years of competition experience, many of whom have competed and won at the highest levels. Beyond the classes, the Team itself is diverse and creates an excellent framework for growth and friendship. read more

I'm really excited about being a part of this organization. It's a hardcore mixed martial arts gym taught by Ivan Salaverry. The gym is clean, the instruction is solid, and the classes are tough. This isn't a place for kids or just exercise. Ivan is an active fighter in UFC fights. He's a good teacher, keeps the class disciplined, but creates a fun casual atmosphere at the same time. I've taken some pretty serious Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu in the past but none of my experiences have been as authentic as my brief time spent here. read more

This gym is a great place for anyone that wants to improve themselves. It doesn't really matter if your plan is to lose some weight and get in shape, or to actually compete and be a fighter. The instructors do a great job of catering to both crowds of people. They give you just as much advice on how to improve your technique on day 1 as they do on day 100. The classes are small enough so that everyone gets some individual attention from the instructor, and the floor is always open to questions. The instructors are great people in and out of the gym and are very easy to get along with. The people that show up and train are great as well. I've interacted with a lot of them in my 10 months here I haven't run into anyone that wasn't courteous and polite. I've improved a lot in the time that I've spent here and I know that it is mostly due to the fact that I've had such helpful guys pushing me to get better all this time. read more

If you're interested in martial arts at all and you live in the Seattle area, THIS is the place you should go to train. All the trainers (Paulie, Manny, Alan, Chris and Ivan himself) are not just super badasses, they're also extremely humble and personable. No matter what your level is, they'll work with you, make sure you get your basics right, then push you over your comfort zone so that you learn while you're there. There's an incredible sense of community at Ivans. There's real camraderie not just with the trainers, but also with the people you train with. I was legitimately surprised by the humility shown by people who can quite literally kick your ass. read more

Ivans MMA is THE SPOT TO GO FOR MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING in Seattle. As a personal trainer and amateur fighter, I couldn't recommend a better spot for those looking to pick up some practical skills, get in GREAT SHAPE, and meet tons of awesome people. Ivans has VERY WELCOMING AND POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE, a scaled ring, INCREDIBLE COACHING, tons of heavy bags, locker rooms, showers, open mat hours, and more! If you're interested in getting into MMA, this is the place to go. They offer classes in BJJ, judo, wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing; so there's plenty of opportunities dabble in various grappling and striking martial arts. I can only really comment on the BJJ classes since that's what I joined the gym for. Ivan can get a bit intense at times if you're not understanding the techniques he's teaching, but he's always more than willing to answer questions or provide more clarification when you need it. In addition, he always offered words of encouragement at the end classes to the newer students that were struggling. I'm nothing but thankful to Ivan for introducing me to BJJ. read more

There's a lot of different options to choose from here (Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, MMA), and they're all covered by the one monthly fee. It kinda annoys me how other gyms have a "X number of Level Y classes for $$$ a month" sort of deal, or term-contract. It's simple here: pay one fee monthly, go to as many or as few classes as you want, and feel free to get involved on your own level. Finding something that I enjoyed was simple enough, and then I just kept coming as much as I wanted to. Nobody pressures you into/out of anything there, and the coaches are friendly. Would definitely recommend. read more

Great gym! I've been coming here for almost a month now and it's been great learning about all the different types of martial arts and techniques. The beginning boxing class has a great instructor who takes his time with the beginners and helps them get the technique down. I've also had good experiences in the BJJ class where techniques were broken down and explained in a way that a newcomer could understand. Another great aspect is the people who work out at this gym, as they overall tend to be patient and also spread around a good training environment. The gym is pretty pricey, but that seems to be the case for all the gyms in the area. One thing I would like to point out is the front desk people. Since starting, I have typically been welcomed when I come in, however this is really only true for two out of the three front desk people. One person at front desk that always seems to be in a bad mood. I tend to say hi and bye and get nothing more than a grunt from him. The one time I had to actually talk with him with a question, he seemed like he would rather be doing anything rather than talk to me. I've seen him be nice to some of the "regulars" however so I am not exactly sure what is going on. Just something to watch out for as it is definitely not representative of the rest of the place and is overall a very jarring experience to the rest of the friendly gym. However, I don't want to let this one person ruin my overall experience at ISMMA, and still do want to give it five stars. Come check it out and get some good training! read more

Two stars because of one simple fact. Ivan is flakey. He'll not show up to teach class on any particular day with no notice. On it's own, that's not terrible, but unfortunately the people who teach in his place are terrible - with the exception of the wrestling coach who is also awesome. The stand-in instructers are just other students and the attitude was clearly that they didn't want to deal with teaching a class. I literally heard "you teach the class", "no, you teach the class" and the one that ended up teaching was clearly disappointed. Basically, the instruction you get from Ivan is pretty darned good. However, on other days, it's complete crap. For the price they charge, it should be good every day. Edit: From their webpage FAQ: "In the rare event that Ivan cannot come in for class, the assistant will teach in his place." He missed a lot more days than I would consider to be 'rare' read more

I love this gym. I'm totally new to this sort of training and am very relieved to say that everyone I've interacted with at Ivan's has been super cool and helpful. The other reviewers are right, it's not easy stuff but well worth it. I was really hesitant having no experience but I feel so comfortable and at ease now that it's great. There are people of every skill level but no one treats you like a kid or super brutally to teach you a lesson. They teach striking and wrestling but I've only done striking so far. Ivan is a really nice and kind guy, I was in awe of him at first but now just feel like part of the gym and that makes me feel great. I highly recommend joining. read more

I had heard about Ivan's many years ago, but it was not until recently that I had the time to finally sign up. It is an excellent workout with excellent instruction. At first I was worried that I would run into a bunch of douche bags wearing Affliction shirts looking to spaz out, but that could not be further from the truth. The coaches and members are friendly and extremely helpful. The workouts are the most difficult I have ever experienced (getting punched in the face repeatedly), but they are also the most rewarding. I am constantly learning new things. The facility is nice and the location is awesome. If you are in Seattle and looking for MMA, Ivan's is it. Also, the price is right. You get the most bang for your buck. Other gyms charge more and only offer one aspect of MMA. As a long time fan of MMA this place is amazing. So to recap. If you are weak, stay home. If you want to push it to the limit, sign up. Just do it. read more

I started there weighing 195 lbs and in the worst shape of my life. In 2 months I was down to a very healthy 155 lbs with nothing but training and eating a slightly better diet. Even though I left town, every time I see someone from there, we still hug it out like family. I miss this place every day and all the people in it. As far as training goes, I've seen 2 UFC heavyweight champs, a UFC/MMA legend (Ivan) and countless other pros come in and give instruction. I don't know where else you can find instruction like that. I trained with guys here that had very limited experience at the beginning and are now professional MMA fighters. Even if you just want some competition and a fun way to stay in shape or you dream of getting in a cage one day, I recommend this place to every single one of my friends. read more

I've been going to ISMMA for four years and it is a great club. Ivan is a cool dude and better coach. Since I've been at ISMMA I've become proficient in boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. It's also a kick ass workout if you're looking to get in shape. One of my favorite aspects of the gym is the community. The club members and coaches are down to earth, friendly, and approachable.
