"Oh My God... I get it." - Frank Reynolds…read more My whole interpretation of what Michelin start rated places prior to eating here were that they were typically bougie / pretentious / overpriced establishments. I've dined at a place back home and although it tasted pretty good it fell into the latter of these statements above. Dalessandro's , though, changed my mind. Even the most humblest of a Philly Cheesesteak could be awarded such an award. There is nothing bougie/pretentious/overpriced about this establishment, it's staff and/or it's food. I sat there a couple bites in pondering what else I should try next time on my visit. I had the Philly Cheeseteak with sweet peppers with white American on a seeded roll. I had a philly cheese steak at a separate location prior to here, and although it was great, Dalessandros had the right balance of meat to bread to dollar ratio. I was full but content. Full but not bloated.

Our experience here was especially delightful with an extended conversation with the owner Scott about the origin of Shay's, and his desire for this to be a safe place for everyone of all stripes to come and enjoy some Philadelphia hospitality and amazing food. It's clear this is a passion of his and he infuses that passion into every ounce of this place!

I believe we got the Ribeye Cheesesteak with onions and peppers, and it was hands down one of the best cheesesteaks I've ever had. Normally, I'm not a fan of seeded bread and I usually don't like peppers either, but somehow everything worked perfectly together. The creamy cooper American cheese, the soft yet crunchy bread and the thinly sliced ribeye made for such an incredible combination. And much to my surprise the peppers actually added a really nice touch and brought everything together. The portion was absolutely massive, but the flavor was so good that it was hard to stop eating it. Definitely a cheesesteak I'd happily have again!

If you're coming to Philly and want to try an iconic local sandwich, you NEED to put this place on your list. The Roast Pork sandwich was phenomenal. The pork was incredibly juicy, packed with flavour, and you could really taste the quality. The brine they use is fantastic, giving the meat so much flavour without taking away from the pork itself. Even the bun deserves some love because it was excellent and brought the whole sandwich together perfectly. You can tell there's a lot of care and attention to detail going into the food here. We also ordered the mozzarella sticks and really enjoyed those, too! Another highlight was getting to see the owner and briefly chat with him. He seemed like a genuinely great dude, and it was cool getting to meet someone behind a place that clearly takes so much pride in what they do. Overall, John's Roast Pork is an absolute MUST when visiting Philadelphia. The quality, flavour, and care that go into the food make it easy to understand why this place has such a legendary reputation. Honestly, if you're planning a Philly food trip, John's Roast Pork and Angelo's Pizzeria near the Italian Market are the two spots you absolutely cannot miss! Both lived up to the hype, and we're so glad we got to experience them for ourselves. While it looks identical to the old cheesesteak game, there seems to be a decline in quality compared to Tony Luke's. The rolls are smaller in circumference making them appear overstuffed from jump. They're still more than I can devour in one sitting, so that doesn't matter too much. But, the last few had less moisture in the grilled meat, and thus were less juicy and less enjoyable to mange. I've heard that T&N is on the market. Given the devolution of quality (and quantity) the need to get out from under the nut and take away some profit is understandable. Three Beefy Stars for what has become an average steak sandwich at best. CORRECTION: Ownership responded to my review and it is only fair I acknowledge the factual points made. He says there is more meat now than before under previous management. I stand corrected. It had been a couple of years since my last steak there, and my impression was affected by my memory of that sandwich and those from a long time ago.
