Never done a wine tasting before but I'm glad my first tasting was here. Most other places were closed on the Monday I went but they open! Me and my buddies know nothing about wine but we learned a lot here and had good conversation. All the wines we tasted were great and even picked up 2 bottles. We enjoyed a tasting with the owner near and maybe past closing time. Despite that the owner didn't rush us and was so kind to let us try whatever we talked about. We really appreciated her time and kindness in sharing the many stories of the winery and the wines, many of the varieties we had never tasted before. Their motto is: there is more to life than Cab, Chardonnay and Merlot. I totally agree. Highly recommend the tasting experience. Loved the Riesling! They also poured us some a few additional selections that were not on list - Metamorphia was a stunner. Gary and Sue are some of the most genuine people I've ever met in the wine business. As soon as you walk in to Gossamer Cellars, you get a strange nostalgic feeling of walking into a close friend's parent's house: There are polaroid pictures adorning the back wall, butterfly art surrounding it, and animal crackers and pretzel sticks in small tubs waiting for you at the bar. The tasting here is $5 and, like many other tasting rooms in the area, it is waived if you purchase a bottle. And I'm almost certain you'll end up purchasing at least one bottle. Gary started us off with some lighter wines, and as we moved down - Sue finished our tasting off. My group was most impressed with their Nebbiolo (which is the only Nebbiolo currently being produced / sold in town!) and almost all of us purchased a bottle of it. We made small talk with Sue, and after she asked some of us about our tattoos, she told us about the tattoos she wants to get - you'll have to ask her to find out more :) All in all, my experience here was incredibly pleasant and I will for sure go back next time I'm in town. We had a great experience tasting 11 different reds and learning about each from the winemaker's wife. All very smooth but distinct profiles. We had a great experience here and a huge reason why are the owners. They go by "Wine Dude" and "Cellar Rat." They make a lot of wines and the tasting is $5 but they waive it if you buy wine, tell a joke, or basically find any reason and they'll waive it. Wine dude, I mean Gary is a wonderful host and wine purveyor. I've been wine tasting in Murphys dozens of times, but have never been to Gossamer. After looking on yelp and seeing all the great reviews, I decided Gossamer was going to be one of our stops. If you find this review helpful, don't be shy about giving it a helpful vote below! :) I'm really glad we stopped into Gossamer. Gary is a really welcoming, friendly, informative, easy going guy, who made our wine tasting experience a wonderful treat. There is an EXTENSIVE list of whites and reds to taste and the cost is a measly $5 to taste. You get to taste anything you want on the entire list. You also might get lucky and get to taste something extra that isn't listed. In our case he let us sip on a new port style dessert wine that he recently just finished making. There was no pressure to buy and he didn't constantly harp on us to buy anything, it was a refreshing approach and aided in us feeling comfortable. That being said if you buy a bottle, your tasting is free. If you leave a review on yelp, your tasting is free! I noticed this on the chalkboard, told him I would do a yelp review, but then also insisted on paying for the tasting as well. It was well worth my $5. Another thing to note is that we were a group of minorities, a mixed group of girls and guys, were not dressed up fancy or anything, but we were treated with warmth and professionalism without a touch of snobbiness or any other negative anything. It is always refreshing to be treated this way. There is also a small bathroom which was nice to have while wine tasting and drinking water. There were animal crackers and pretzels to snack on while tasting and that was a nice touch. If you are not schooled on the types of animals that are offered in the animal cracker offerings, there is a handy chart to help you identify which type of animal cracker you are munching on. We were told that Tigers pair really well with whites, but that elephants go really well with anything. My favorite flavor is the majestic puma. That was a test. If you know anything about animal crackers, you know there is not a puma offering. Getting back on track. I'm a red wine guy. I don't really buy white, I rarely choose to drink white and just prefer and mostly partake in reds. I really liked all the whites that I tried here. That is saying something. I was not a huge fan of the reds, but I also didn't dislike them. A friend of mine who is not a huge wine person really enjoyed the reds. That person compared one red as being something that felt close to their heart, like a distant cousin. lol. The tasting room was full, but we were still accommodated and started our tasting standing up and later sat down when seats opened up. We were not rushed through the tasting and had a really relaxing and wonderful experience. There was a constant flow of people stopping in for their wine club pick ups, so Gossamer is definitely doing something right. Talking to Gary, he explained that he doesn't like to do the exact same thing that everyone else is doing and like to experiment with wine and try new things and different things. He had some very unique tasting wines and had wines with grapes that I had never heard of before. He also told us about a few different techniques that he has used to come up with some of his wines and like I normally do, I learned something new about a interesting way in which grapes can be processed to produce a specific result (it included dry ice!). This was my first time to Gossamer and it will definitely not be my last. Go tasting there and if you feel inclined, buy a bottle. Most bottles are in the low 20s, but keep in mind your tasting is free when you buy a bottle. Sue (Cellar Rat) also seemed very pleasant and was taking good care of the folks next to us. I'm sure she is just as cool as Gary. read more

We had been considering joining a wine club in Murphys for quite a while, but had never made the commitment. I mean, there are so many wonderful wineries in Murphys with fabulous tasting rooms and hosts. However were we to choose? On a trip to visit family, my husband and I decided to do a little wine tasting. As we walked down Main Street, we noticed a tiny tasting room that was unfamiliar to us. Being the curious people we are, naturally we popped in for a taste. How lucky we were that we made that decision! I can honestly say we love every single wine Gary "the Wine Dude" makes and Sue "the Cellar Rat" pours! The varietals are not of the typical variety. No Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon here! We are smitten with varietals such as Negroamaro, Nebbiolo, and Alicante Bouchet. Absolutely divine! After our first tasting visit, there was no doubt in our minds that we needed to join Gossamer Cellars' wine club! We are so happy with our decision and we look forward to every shipment. Everyone is incredibly friendly and although I'm only half way thru my tasting I've already decided that I'm taking home two bottles of white (when I normally go red). This is a small and special place, family owned and Gary's passion for wine really comes through, my lucky stars led to me tasting a sparkling Sunday, it was dry, fresh, sparkling, rosé, stone fruit, exceeded my expectations. I was simply thrilled to get a taste of it, if you are lucky enough to stop in and get a sparkling taste- ask for it! Very exciting to see them take this direction, a GOOD sparkling wine in the region is not easy to find. They have it here, toss your cava, make room for a bottle of it if you can get one. Sue was incredibly thoughtful and friendly, they really make you feel so welcomed, the tasting room is intimate and small, its like visiting a friend who happens to have wine and great stories to share. Came here on a whim while we waited for a restaurant to serve food and I am glad we tried it out. They have quite the variety of wine to taste and the atmosphere is mellow and lovely. I really enjoyed the Grenache blanc the most. Had a wonderful time hanging out with my sis, boyfriend, and the wine dude lol for snack they have animals crackers and pretzels :) Ps-my sister's favorite is the Tannat Rose :D read more
