Really decent BBQ for SF. Short wait, ribs are really good. Pork is decently. Brisket I'd suggest asking for moist (fatty) as the leaner stuff can be a little on the dry side. It's not bad - they use almond wood to smoke so if you are looking for oak or mesquite this isn't that. Haven't had the chicken yet but will plan on it. Honestly some of the worst barbeque I've ever had.(A little overpriced too.) I know what's needed to make great tasting barbeque because I grew up eating it a lot. I'd assume that people in this city haven't had quality barbeque before due to the long line when I arrived. I ordered the brisket, but they didn't have any more. Then chicken... This was the best ribs I have eaten in a long time. The BBQ sauce was sweet with a little spice. The ribs were tinder and juicy and the Mac and cheese was very different. Gorilla Barbeque is the best barbecue in the Bay Area! Their sauce is incredible, and they give you what at first seems like way too much, but when you're done, you'll be glad you had every drop. Don't be fooled by the long line, it goes by pretty fast! Due to the popularity of the place a lot of the protein gets sold out pretty quickly but I was lucky enough to get there just as the pulled pork got refilled. I ordered the two meat combo that comes with a side of beans and rice with the pulled pork, ribs, corn bread and two sides: coleslaw and mac n cheese. Everything was delicious. The ribs were fall off the bone and the pork was tender. I normally don't like mac n cheese but this one was pretty good too. One thing that reaaaaaally turned me off about the place is if you pay with credit card, the girl at the counter asks, "Do you want to add a tip to that?" in a really aggressive manner and I saw that most people will be super taken aback by it and stutter "Sure add x amount..." There's a tip jar right there, don't force a tip on someone especially when it's take out. I added a two dollar tip in cash but yeah not a way to get return customers. Like many, I discover this BBQ gem from an episode of Triple D with Guy. Love on the South Bay, the drive up was about 45 min. Cool spot, old rail car they outfitted with a sweet meat smoker! Went on a weekend, so the line was lengthy. We got about three people from the door and a lady came out, she had just got the last brisket order! Didn't matter, went ribs & links with Mac & cheese and beans. It was nights out!! Now granted this review is about 3 years past due, I see from the current reviews this place is still cranking out some of the best bbq in the Bay Area! Up to this point in my life I'm surprised I don't have a pig and a cow tattooed on me because that's how much I love meat. And when I crave barbeque, I head over to Gorilla to get my fix. It is carnivore galore, and these guys do not play. They are all business when it comes to barbeque. The usual suspects: 2 meat combo (brisket and ribs) with mac & cheese and coleslaw. Mind you it also comes with beans & rice, cornbread, and barbeque sauce. This will set you back ~$15. The brisket is divine with a nice char on the outside and juicy and moist on the inside. The ribs...fall off the bone...nuff said. Mac & cheese is really cheesy-I like it. Coleslaw is crisp and fresh. Beans and rice are ok, but they kind of get overshadowed by everything else. Cornbread is nice and buttery. You will like the sauce if you like them tangy and not too sweet. FYI: if you are planning on 'dining in', expect to 'dine out' at the benches along the periphery or in your car. If you are an 'early bird', get here at noon because they are not going to serve you earlier. If your craving comes in the evening...good luck...they close when they sell out. My only problem with Gorilla is that they are too close to me. I don't know what this will do to my 'diet'. This is some serious, hardcore BBQ even though it looks like a lighthearted, fun place (it's a railroad car decorated with gorillas and Guy Fieri pictures). The place smells intensely smoky and the BBQ meat items are infused with deep, smoky flavor. From the odor, you can tell that the meat has been cooked low and slow for many hours. I love bbq but my m.o. is usually pulled pork, brisket and hot links. The not so subtle knuckle nudge of dudes' tattoos sent me towards the pork ribs. I ordered a 2 meat combo with pork ribs and beef brisket, mac n cheese and coleslaw as my sides. The order automatically comes with rice and beans. I was with my mom and she ordered pork ribs and pulled pork, potato salad and coleslaw. They have canned soda (including Hawaiian Punch!) and bottled water. Prices are very reasonable once you see how much food you get. Gorilla Barbeque is take out only. There are a couple of picnic tables on a little hill that overlooks the rail car but if you want to enjoy scenic splendor while you indulge in some BBQ smack down, pop a U-ey at the light and go kick it at Rock-A-Way beach. You can park your car overlooking the swirling ocean and have a picnic in your car or sit on one of the big rocks overlooking the ocean. I came prepared. . I had packed a damp towel and dry towel .. which is imperative if you want to really dig into this luscious BBQ. They give you a napkin that comes in the little utensil kit and one teeny tiny wet nap. That ain't gonna cut it! Okay. . so. . .the sides are pretty good for the most part. I think they do a great job with the coleslaw and while the potato salad is a little more smooshy than I like, the flavor is there. The mac n cheese is only all right. It's got that comforting unnatural yellow/orange color that I actually kind of like and it looks like there's lots of seasoning salt in it but it is just kind of not cheesy enough. The beans and rice - well, not so great and it kind of bums me out because those boys know how to cook - and I am not sure why they don't throw some more love (and by love I mean flavor) into that side dish that comes with every order - I know they could do way better. The cornbread is the really sweet kind . .almost like a corn bread cupcake - not my thing but then again, corn bread sort of is not my thing. They serve their meat naked (mmmm - naked meat!!!) save for the rub and I really like that in a BBQ place. . don't hide all the love you poured into the meat with a bunch of sauce! They are generous with the sauce on the side. The brisket was a little fatty for me. And I am not a girl who is picky about that. . .I do not remove every trace of fat from anything but this was sort of greasy and not as tender as I would have liked. I got the 3 meat combo which came with beans over rice corn bread with real corn in it. I also got their delicious mac n cheese and coleslaw for the other two sides. For my meats i chose the pork ribs, pulled pork, and chicken. Lets start with the sides, the beans over rice wasn't really my thing but it tasted pretty good. The cornbread was OK but it wasn't really my thing neither. It was all about the mac n cheese and the coleslaw. The mac n cheese was great, they used some big pasta like pieces and the cheese was a mix of a few different cheeses so it was delicious. The coleslaw was very tasty, i usually don't like any other coleslaw besides kfc's but this was real good. Now for the meats, let me start out by saying that this place does it right. They always put your sauce on the side because they know they want to show off their meats. Alot of BBQ spots like to smother their meats with sauce and hide their nasty cuts or overly cooked pieces. But this spot displays their meat proudly because they were smoked properly. I wasn't too big of a fan of the sauce, but that was OK because this BBQ was so good you didn't even need the sauce. The dry rub on the ribs and chicken were so good, i even forgot to dip it in the sauce. The ribs were very flavorful and had a nice smoke ring on them but the dry rub was what made it taste great. Same for the chicken, the dry rub they used were enough I didn't even need to add sauce. As for the pulled pork, that was one of the best Ive ever eaten. I tried alot of pulled pork at many spots but this spot has got it down right. Very juicy and very flavorful. I also got a chance to try out the beef brisket and WOW that was hella good. Very smokey and very tender, it basically melted in your mouth. Overall it was worth the trip from Oakland to Pacifica to try out some of this Gorilla BBQ. Welcome to the epicenter of the Stimulus Package, both Federal and personal! The place was packed and lined up out the door at lunch with lots of construction and contractor types. Lots of regulars who seem like they are there every other day with an owner who treats everyone like he has known them for years. It was a personal shot of stimulus because I found one of the best barbeque joints west of the Mississippi. Meats: Falling off the bone rib heaven. Focus is on the natural flavors. They clearly work hard to have flavors come through and not be overpowered by gimmicks such as rubs, flavored woods and heavy-handed sauces. Beef brisket was tender and thinly sliced. I bought a whole chicken for dinner: nicely smoked through out and packed with flavor. Smoke: From the pink still in the meat as it falls easily off the bone, its clear that they smoke for a very long time. Nothing rushed; no corners cut. They didn't attempt to overpower the natural flavors by adding too much specialty wood like mesquite or hickory. Rub: Light flavors nicely caramelized. I wouldn't have minded a slightly stronger flavor (even just a bit more salt). The focus is on having the natural flavors of the meat come through and I have to respect them for the direction they have taken. Sides: While not as extensive as I might like, they execute well at what they do serve. Mac and cheese was smooth and creamy. Some additional spices (including paprika) gave it a nice little kick. Cole slaw was nicely shredded, light and refreshing. Value: One meat plate is $11; two meats are $15. Beans and dirty rice are included in all plates as is a corn muffin with a choice of two sides. Good size portions and good value. Sauce: When I asked for hot barbeque sauce, the owner said he needed to ask three times if I was really sure I liked it really, really hot. A regular sauce was thrown in for good measure. The regular sauce was balanced without be overpowering. The hot was probably a bit too hot without balance. What worked best for me was to mix the two. Ambience: A total dive in a converted rail car. Jovial owner who enjoys what he is doing down to having R-I-B-S tattooed to his knuckles. (Its frankly a bit of a wonder how he gets in behind the counter in such a tight space with his girth.) It only helps that its out of the way from just about anywhere. Seating: technically speaking, it seems like its officially take out only. There are a few picnic tables up a near by hill. Others hang out on a railroad tie at the base of the rail car structure. Soooo overrated!! Whatever, Guy Fieri went here .... I get how great the concept of a restaurant in a train car, but after you're done with the show, the food is very bland and lack real bbq flavor. The brisket and ribs are dry, the mac and cheese was not special at all (quite soggy), zero flavor in the potato salad or the rice and beans! Mediocre at best Nothing in there justified how expensive this place is! Most of the food ended up in the compost bin... You're better off going somewhere in the City like memphis minnies, sneaky's, baby blues or roadside bbqs.. read more

Like a lot of you might have seen, this was recently featured on the Food Network, Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Which could be a curse. Too many people flock after seeing the show, etc. So after hitting Mazzetti's Bakery, we had to hit this place up. Like many have said, they run out of food early. This happened when we were there. One minute, chicken was available. The next minute, it's gone. Unless you go early, pickings will be slim. We were lucky to grab the last of the chicken. There was plenty of pulled pork and beef brisket. Both the pork and beef were dry and rather bland until bathed in sauce. then it became a lot better. The sides of corn and mac and cheese were OK, but I hoped the mac would have been a bit creamier and cheesier. My roommate says the same things, a bit bland until sauced. There is NO seating at all, except in your car. Three stars for now until I can get there again and try the ribs. They are open until they sell out which could be 3:00 pm, or maybe even 6:00.
