Saw Dr Gopal two weeks ago and found him condescending and lacking empathy. How hard is it to be kind?

Dr. Gopal was so kind in treating me. Definitely listened and made sure I understood what was needed. Also explained things well.

I had not been in for a few years (living out-of-state during Covid made it impossible), but had an emergency with my ear earlier this week created by a mistake at my new PCP's office (note to self: continue search for new PCP). I called Dr. Vernick's office the next day and spoke with Anna - we had a nice chat, she told me she joined the office a couple of months ago and helped me get in ASAP. She recommended I see Mary, the office's RN, and was able to make an appt for me first-thing the following morning. Mary was amazing, looked at both ears to see what happened and then explained in nice, easy-to-understand terms what happened and what to do. My pharmacy let me know 6 hours later (!!!) that one of the two prescriptions she ordered for me was unavailable, so I called the office to go with option #2. I left a message for Mary, she called me back a few minutes later and sent in the next request. I have a follow-up with Mary in two weeks, and am starting to feel a little better after just starting 2 antibiotics. A BIG thank you to Anna and Mary!!

He is absolutely the best doctor I have ever had…read more 1. Knowledge: beyond that of any doctor I have ever seen. He not only knew more than anyone else I had seen, but he also could recognize what he didn't know, and he found out on his own and got back to me. I literally had five different diagnosis from five different doctors. My illness was confusing, and he was the only one to correctly predict what I was going to experience as time went on, and how to deal with (and cure) what I had despite the lack of tests to verifiably diagnose me. He noticed within moments what no other doctor had the insight to detect. 2. Bedside manner: fantastic. I was extremely comfortable. I felt taken care of and respected. He didn't ever oversimplify or dumb down his diagnosis. He was clear, honest, and helpful in describing what he saw honestly and completely and without unnecessary lingo. He made everything extremely easy on me (He partly filled out forms for me so I didn't have to figure it out and he mailed them to me at my apartment (name, type of care etc). It was incredible how caring and how important it was to me!) They really made a great effort to make you comfortable, and give you mental ease while you're sick. 3. Wait time: Above and beyond. I always came in in the morning if I had an appointment, but there were times when I was sick with a fever and just called in hoping to see someone sometime that day. They always got me in right away with maybe a 10 minute wait! It was fantastic. I can't speak highly enough about Dr. Goldstein! I am super hard to please and kinda critical in general, but that is especially true when I'm sick. Dr. Goldstein was fantastic. I never had to worry about anything from billing to accurate information to staff remembering my history, to paperwork, to general caring atmosphere, and most of all I had confidence finally that he knew his stuff, and I was going to get well after quite a lot of searching!! My highest recommendation goes to him!

Funny, as I am a married gentile woman in my 40s, I never entertained the thought of an older Jewish man....... But he is quite funny and rather charming, especially when the chaos of the day finally calms down in his office. He looks you right in the eye when he speaks to you and he notices little things that either other people don't observe or don't take the time to mention. Now on to the review: The first time I went to his office I waited for hours, as they were so far behind schedule and my appointment was still mid morning. He did take the time to send me for the tests I necessary; nevertheless, he was unable to diagnose what my particular problem was. He was actually baffled. As the other Yelper indicated, he did not issue and Rx unnecessarily, which is always appreciated and he okayed my to fly. He scheduled a follow-up appointment and sent me for repeat tests, same results and still no idea of what the problem with me ears is. "We", and I say we, because I have been looking for answers as well, have looked into drug interactions and other factors and have been unable to come up with anything. Yet, the problem persists. I have my third appointment coming up soon. If he does not find a solution to my ongoing ear problem (this has been 10 months) ~ I am going to break up with him.....

I have never had worse care at any facility than I did at MEEI ER today. As a man who has had a…read morelot of care across the country that is saying something. I am a Registered Nurse and a professional classical singer. I have strong interest in immunology and the singing voice. My big impediment to success in any career is an underlying immune deficiency. I recently developed severe pneumonia. I was started on exceptionally high doses PO steroids and by definition am further immune compromised. Last week I endured new, severe hearing loss and ear pain when I was forced to flee a wildfire by airplane while I was ill with the above pneumonia. Went to MEEI for hearing and ear pain eval. Was asked if I had any issues that needed accommodation. I stated that my hearing loss would make it difficult to hear my name called. They said they had me. Meanwhile the waiting room was packed hook by jowl with patients. No ventilation. No one masking and some had active coughs. I was told to sit in one of the annexes to get some space. I did not hear my name called when the triage nurse called me. No apologies offered from the nurse, just a grumble and annoyance. . After that I was again asked if I had any issues that needed accommodation I again stated my acute, severe hearing loss and was again told that they had me. I am a nurse. I know it sucks to work in health care nowadays so I did not keep harassing folks. I waited patiently. After three hours of waiting in that absolute bedlam I asked what was up. . I was met with attitude and anger. I was told that I had been taken off the patient roster because they had called me and I never came to the desk. They wanted to know why I did not answer them when they called my name. They stated they would place me on the bottom of the triage list and I could wait my turn all over again. I pushed back and stated that this was unacceptable. That as the allegedly pre- eminent ENT ER for the region this was outrageous malpractice. I was given a patronizing speech about having good manners. ( no one identifies themselves so I had no idea who I was being scolded by or what their job title ls). I again pointed out: " I am severely ill with pneumonia. I have severe acute hearing loss. I am immune compromised and my thinking is impaired by high dose steroids". Not a word of compassion. No empathy. Not a hint of an apology. Just more scolding. Patronizingly told that if I was able to act more nicely I would be seen . I am a nice man so of course I was brought to exam room. I was seen by the doc ( no name or title given ) Doc wanted to know why I thought I had immune disorder. She seemed in a total daze. Sent upstairs for Hearing eval. In Audio I was treated with compassion and kindness first and only encounter in the entire 7 hours I was at MEEI. Curiously the Audio clinic had these really cool mid-century buzzers to hold on to so you knew when you were going to be seen. Funny how that technology hasn't tricked down to the ER in 30 years. I guess it's better to yell at your acutely ill hearing impaired patients and threaten to deny care . That makes sense. Seen again by same doc. Told I have hearing loss. Recommended nasal steroids. I stated again that I am on high dose steroids. This was news to her and she then stated nasal steroids contraindicated. Stated she was making a referral to an MEEI doc for me. Wants me seen in 1-2 weeks time. States she was calling in an RX for antihistamine. She handed me DC paperwork. ( never bothered to have me review or sign ) and told me I as good to go. Left ER to discover that DC paperwork tells me to call my PCP ( not an ent ). to ask for Audio referral. Found out they called in RX to a town I haven't lived in for 10 years ( 1 hour drive in each direction.) Went back to ER. They hooked ho apt with audio but in late September. I am supposed to call a number and beg for something earlier. I kept thinking of the outrageous CEO perks that the crooks that run MEEI/ Partners are getting. How many staff are being cut. How many patient waiting rooms are eliminated so those 1%ers can build their mansions and get their yachts and go to their MAGA fundraisers. The care offered at MEEI was an insult to the profession. It is substandard bordering on malpractice. I do not blame a single clinician I met. I do not blame facitlies management. I blame the corrupt CEO's who are ramming our health care into the ground. And taking wonderful clinicians and us poor patients along as hostages . I just lavaged my nose. Took my megadose steroids and antibiotics for my pneumonia. Hoping I dont get sick or go deaf. . will call lawyer if I do
