It's been roughly ten or more years since I first writ a review for our local doughnut shop. The last time I was there, it wasn't entirely the greatest thing in the world. However, previous visits years prior to 2024 DID show that they were still consistently good. I DO yearn to go back for another doughnut hopefully within the next month or so, because maybe my most recent visit was a bit off for business. I don't know if they really changed ownership or not, because on that visit, I got there at the crack of dawn, and a rather young woman was running the store itself with doughnuts that looked like they were there at least the day before, which I'm not sure if that's actually the case. Otherwise, it seems they have the entire counter take up the entire width of the restaurant, and the seating has been moved completely to the window. Before, the counter was actually spanning approximately half the entire establishment, and seating was somewhat spread out almost evenly near the wall and the corner; now it narrowly blocks off nearly 75% of that from the looks of it. I would like to wonder why, but I'd rather not further ask questions. Again: I hope to come back again for another doughnut. read more

Update! Goody's Donuts has changed owners again. The new owner Ulises is so sweet and friendly. He is the polar opposite of the previous owner who only lasted a few months. I am so glad that I can return to the shop. Even better, on occasion I get to see Norman and Jie (long time owners) as they fill in when Ulises and his wife need a break. The inside of shop recently underwent a few changes. There is a cute coffee prep/condiment table where you can customize your coffee. There are more tables for customers to sit and enjoy their coffee and donuts or to read the newspaper. The donuts are basic and no frills. Just a traditional, solid donut. Whether you enjoy glazed, cake, long john, old fashioned, jelly filled, cruller, raised, or a donut hole, Goody's has them. I think the glazed twist is still my favorite. By far one of the best donut spots in the Serra Mesa area! They are open early for all your donut needs. The greatest thing I discovered about them is their sandwiches! There are also group orders you're able to place ahead of time. Super yummy coffee drinks (huge frappe fan & I've had them all), new drinks have been introduced in the last couple of months. One of the few places that also serves Thrifty ice cream still ! I frequently will get a triple scoop of bubble gum & mint with chocolate chips to go along side my donuts (if I'm going to have a cheat day, might as well fully enjoy it ). Parking lot is easy to navigate & no matter what time it is, there is always parking. Street parking also surround the complex the donut shop sits in. Came here on a weekday late morning. Not busy and there were plenty of donuts available. Nothing fancy, their selection was a good variety of traditional donuts. They also have a dining area with tables that is bigger than other donut shops. We picked up a dozen glazed donut holds and one buttermilk with chocolate frosting, all put into a brown paper bag. The buttermilk was quite large, very dense but still moist. I would've liked a bit more chocolate frosting, or maybe a stronger chocolate taste from the frosting. The donut holes were yummy. They are very airy, light, moist. They're a bit larger, about two good bites. They were glazed but not overly sweet or sticky. Thumbs up. Husband and I preferred the donut holes over the regular size buttermilk. Parking lot shared with neighboring businesses. Not really a place I'd go out of my way for, but definitely a good pick if you are already in the area. read more

I went there a few months ago and the owner (Ulysses?) was so incredibly friendly and... just REALLY NICE. After talking to him and hearing the story behind the donut shop, he and his wife seem like the kind of people that once you have a conversation with them, you just root for them in life as a whole. I think I got donut holes and Ulysses gave me a complimentary blueberry donut to try. The donuts were really good too--one of my top two locations for donuts in San Diego now. I have them specifically in mind for when I'm craving a donut and want a hometown feel where I can get to know the human being on the other side of the counter. Beyond customer service--HOSPITALITY. Go there if you want to be treated like a human being, hear a story, and maybe even share a little bit of yours. Service is amazing!! First off, family owned so the owners know their regulars. Super sweet and friendly couple. I came here for some donuts of course. Didn't see any red velvet so I asked them. The young lady said they were out for the day. That's what I get for coming in the afternoon. BUT, the lady owner turned around and asked how many I wanted. I said 2 and she went back to give me 2. Just not the same with the new owners. This was the best Apple Fritter in San Diego hands down....I introduced many friends to this shop, and all have loved them. Over the last 2 weeks, I've been there 3 times, early in the morning to grab those famous fritters..first 2 times, they didn't have any, finally today they had 4 in the case. As soon as I grabbed the bag, I knew it was different. Got it home, opened the bag....about 2/3 the size they used to be, and about 1/3 the weight. Hardly any apple...so sad. I stumbled upon this mom & pop donut shop in Serra Mesa today during lunch. I was actually in the area originally to get some coffee and treats across the street at Bear Buns Bakery but they were literally out of everything I wanted. I walked across the street with my coworker and we spotted Goody's Donuts. They offer a good assortment of donuts, pastries and it looks like they even have ice cream? I got a huge cinnamon roll for only $1.50 and also an iced coffee flavored caramel macchiato. They prices are nice and low. The iced coffee tasted better than I expected and I wonder recommend ordering it. I brought back the cinnamon roll to my office and heated it up, I'm eating it as we speak. It's so yummy and delicious, very soft. You can tell it was made fresh today. $1.50 for a huge cinnamon roll is such a deal compared to the overpriced one you get from Cinnabon at the mall. The lady working there (I think she might be the owner?) was so nice and kind. She told me that I could pay with credit card which is awesome since most donut shops are usually cash only. When my out of town friend visits we walk to this shop to get breakfast. He loves their Glazed Buttermilk bars because they are big and always yummy. He also gets a sausage and egg croissant. I was craving donuts this morning and this place is a block away from my house. My favorite donuts are Chocolate Old Fashioned. I tried one and I wasn't too impressed. The chocolate wasn't too flavorful and there wasn't enough fluffy sweet dough in the middle. I was craving chocolate and a whole donut later, I was still unsatisfied; however, I do have an insatiable appetite for chocolate. Let me start by saying I've only been here on Sundays around 12pm and I've only ever had their donuts. The donuts are pretty good, definitely above average for San Diego. Ive never had a stale donut here; the only criticism I can say is that on one or two occasions one has been a teeny bit greasy but still it's a donut and not a bad one at that. Every time I walk in the people who run the shop are always so genuine and friendly. That alone makes me want to come back. read more
