Was so excited to see the sign for a bakery! Went in excited for an Apple fritter or some other deliciousness, but sadly no. Rude counter staff- dismissive and rushing though only one other customer was in the shop and four employees. The food looked amazing, and we only tried the baked goods, but they were not good. The cinnamon roll was not crisp on the outside- cooked and boxed overnight? The cherry doughnut tasted like the worst of boxed cake and also moist on the outside- gummy sugar coating. Finally, the custard in what I was rudely told was not an eclair (though shaped like one) was definitely stores in a fridge with some savory food item that was unwrapped or poorly stored- tasted awful. Great deli selection for sandwiches, soups, and sides with plus a huge bakery selection from donuts to breads. The refrigerated cases have birthday cakes and all kinds of other foods. Had a great sandwich and didn't cost much at all. Took a selection of different donuts home for the kids and they're going to love them. Everyone working was incredibly warm and helpful. I'm planning on making this a staple during my trips up north. This place is adorable and probably hasn't changed since it opened forever ago. I didn't actually get to try any of the baked goods, so I need to return! My sandwich was really delicious though- they carry Kowalski meats, yum. I thought their macaroni and cheese was too mushy, although others who tried it thought it was great so that might just be me. They sell Great Lakes Potato Chips, which is a bonus. They also have other hot foods (today it was pasties, mostaccioli, some kind of chicken pasta, pulled pork, and hot dogs) and various soups of the day, including chili. I think they may have had bread bowls as well. They even have a section for gluten free baked goods! read more

Wow! Places like this don't exist anymore.. Stopped at Goodale's to get lunch to take on a canoe trip. For $3.50 I had one of the best deli sandwiches I've had! You can basically pick your meat & cheese - upgrade to the kaiser roll. It was a generous portion and super tasty. We also bought some homemade cheese popcorn and it was great! To round it out we each got a donut, the sour cream donut was out of this world. The staff were super friendly!! The only regret we had was not being able to eat from the hot bar. They had a variety of pasties, bbq and mac & cheese. Prices were a steal, I'd happily pay more for how great it was! read more

Thank you yelp! I needed a last minute birthday cake (yes I'm a horrible husband) but we were in rural Michigan during my time of need. A quick google of "grayling, bakery" only gave me one result and it was good. Real real good. With only a day's notice I was provided a perfect vanilla cake with custom messaging, but also during my pickup I grabbed a couple of different flavors or white bread (english muffin and "hearth" which was chewy and wonderful) as well as some DELICIOUS doughnuts. Service was remarkably helpful and friendly, but the food was also solid. Atmosphere was seriously old school, and the coffee shop area was filled with amazing Grayling old timey locals. My sister and I stopped in for a quick breakfast and wanted to try their pasties---so bought several and some packages of cheese curds. The breakfast was amazing! Loved every bite! Just finished a pasty and it was delicious, and more authentic than many of the ones we tried in Michigan. The cheese curds were heavenly. When I'm in Grayling, stopping by Goodale's for a cinamon biscuit is a must. It's spiraled like a cinnamon roll, but has a slightly flaky texture like a biscuit. Lots of cinnamon and nice schmear of frosting on top. Unique treat in a unique town. Had a few other donuts, some fresh and some not, and liked them as long as they fell into the latter category. Coffee is pretty typical diner/donut shop brew. If I was mainly interested in coffee I wouldn't come here, but to wash down a donut or biscuit it's fine. I keep meaning to try lunch here. And some of those loaves of cinnamon or fruit swirl bread. If you're well into your middle years like I am, this will remind you of those corner bakeries where people usually went for their sweet rolls and donuts before scones, biscotti, and french roast came into vogue. read more

My husband and I stopped at Goodale's July 10th to grab lunch for the road. I was surprised at how few customers wore masks. I approached the counter where an unfriendly employee asked what I wanted...unmasked! There were no menus or prices. While she made the sandwiches, I (masked) was not able to distance from other customers unmasked. As I left the bakery, I sidestepped other unmasked customers. I sincerely hope this old established business has implemented our governor's rules for the state of Michigan to keep people safe. Plus the sandwiches were not great. read more

Goodale's donuts exceed almost every donut I've ever had. Over the course of two visits here I tried the sour cream, double chocolate, glazed blueberry, glazed cherry, glazed raised, and apple cinnamon. Every one was exceptional in flavor and in texture, with the sour cream being the major standout in the group. I also tried many of the cake donuts day old, and was impressed with how well they maintained their quality. Goodale's donuts are also an exceptional value. Each one costs just 60 cents, which seems insane when I consider that I've paid 4-5 times that for virtually inedible donuts in san francisco. 2 small criticisms/points of information: -No apple fritters. This would make me cry if the donuts weren't so incredibly delicious. As it is, I'm a little glad they don't have apple fritters because if they did, I'd have to order one and then I wouldn't get to eat as many of the other delicious flavors. Still, for an apple fritter enthusiast like myself, it's an important thing to know before you go! -These are not fancy-pants gourmet donuts. The textures and basic flavors are nonpareil, but the chocolate and cherry flavors are the sort of fakey chocolate and cherry flavors that belong in a donut. This is a fabulous bakery, probably the best in Northern Michigan. The offer lots of reasonably priced baked goods, (sweet rolls, doughnuts, cookies, bread, coffee cakes, etc.) as well as pasties with gravy and other lunch fare. Looks like locals and tourists come here; sometimes there are groups of servicemen from the military base nearby. The owners are friendly and talkative and even slipped an extra doughnut in the bag. Best of all they are open until 8 PM on Friday. Some local teenager needs to create them a website. Please, help them out. I want to love this place. They have a great mix of locally made cheeses and meats and tasty bakery items. However, today no one preparing food in the back was wearing a mask, and neither was the chatty employee at the cash register where we needed to go to order a pasty. We found an employee with a mask from whom to place our order, and she was so rude we were almost joking about it an hour later. The pasty was undercooked and underwhelming, but at least we had ketchup, which grumpy clerk reluctantly found for us. I do want to want to be a regular here, but it's not going to happen. read more

Without a doubt my favorite bakery in Michigan. Be careful, gets busy on the weekends early in the morning. Don't be afraid to approach the counter for service otherwise you will be standing around. Donuts! Bread! Fudge! Oh my! This is a great little hang out for the locals and the older generation of men and women living in the area. Boy do they have some stories to tell! When we stopped in for some donuts the guy at the counter informed us that we were in the presence of a centenarian and that the man was actually 102. He had been in several wars and still came in the place every single day for socialization. I thought that was very interesting! All the goodies are baked fresh and the place smells awesome. Goodale's is an awesome treat! My family and I stopped there for the first time and discovered a HUGE counter full of different donut options. We even were informed that if they don't have one ready with the filling you want, they can make it for you when you order. My mom and I both got cinnamon-sugar varieties and had intended to share them, but by the time my dad got back with his coffee (maybe 90 seconds), our donuts were gone. You can get coffee in a mug to stay, which is a nice option, too. When we went, there seemed to be a lot of regulars enjoying their morning coffee and newspaper. I'm docking one star because I think they could make better coffee. That aside, this place is still very worth your time. read more

While we were checking out Grayling and what it had to offer, we caught eye of Goodale's and saw numerous people going in. I'm all for pastries and goodies, so I followed suit. Some of the shelved items seemed pricey, but maybe that's just me. ($5 for six cookies) Anyway, they had a nice variety of items. We ended up getting a couple of Danish elephant ears, a cherry turnover, a long john and an almond paste bar. I didn't hear complaints from my son about the long john. The almond bar was okay, but not enough filling. My cherry turnover was pretty tasty and had a decent amount of filling. The elephant ears were crisp and sugary. The staff person that waited on us didn't seem too friendly. I don't think she broke so much as even a slight smile. From our viewpoint, it wasn't anything to die for, or outstanding, or amazing or one of those places we MUST get back to every time we get close to it. It was an average bakery. I loved my lunch here today! It feels like going over to your mom or grandmas house and getting a home cooked meal prepared with love. What a hidden gem. My husband ordered a beef pastie and we split some macaroni and cheese. I wasn't sure what to order because there were so many choices in their deli, so I ordered a bologna sandwich with Muenster cheese, pickle, onion and mustard on a Kaiser roll. We found a table and started with the pastie while my sandwich was being prepared. It was so good I was starting to think I made the wrong choice getting a plain ol bologna sandwich. Boy was I wrong! That sandwich was stacked high with bologna and for some reason it was amazing! My husband said it's like the proportion of the ingredients in it was just right haha. Unbelievable bakery!!!! Everything is good. Donuts, breads, cookies, rolls. They make great sandwiches and have a hot case full of pasties and such! Ridiculously affordable. Goodale's is awesome. I have been going there my entire life - from when my grandfather would take me to now when I go with my own family. If you're looking for a hot meal, I can't speak to that but the donuts and elephant ears are amazing. My husband dreams about them all year until we come up for our annual vacation. The service is efficient...you're not going to get someone's life story or anything but the food is worth it. It's best to know what you want when you step up to the counter. There may be lines or they may be out of stuff if you go later in the day, especially on weekends. Donuts are flavorful, moist and they have tons of flavors to choose from. We like apple cinnamon cake, cherry cake, and sour cream the best. The Elephant ears are huge, crispy, sweet, and flaky. We love you Goodales! Please never change! read more

Goodale's has been a staple of my childhood, however I will no longer patronize them. None of the workers in the back wear masks, and the cashiers were wearing their "masks" (neck gaiters) around their neck. There is no plexiglass or anything blocking you, and the store's interior makes it impossible to social distance. Customers without masks on are allowed to roam free in the store. The donuts are sort of tasty, but are not worth the risk. You can really smell the ignorance when you enter the bakery. read more

What a little treasure! Have been driving thru Grayling for years and have notice the Kowalski's emblem but never the bakery. Thanks to my friends at yelp I have stumbled upon a new reason to travel from New Jersey to Michigan. An ol' time bakery like I remember as a kid in Hamtramck, MI but better! Of course we tried the sour cream that everyone was raving about and no wonder. But my favorite was the cherry filled! Didn't get any cherry pie while in Traverse City this trip and the cherry filled donut did the trick! But they will fill for you any of the variety of flavors they have so I will likely try raspberry next time. Unfortunately had not planned ahead or I would have had a cooler full of Kowalski's sausage to bring back to New Jersey but next trip watch out.
