    Goodyear blimp Feb.7, 1930
    John D.

As I sit at home reading the newspaper on this Sunday afternoon, the sound of aircraft gets my attention. My curiosity gets me up to go outside and check it out, and what do I see flying above the neighborhood. None other than the magnificent Goodyear blimp traveling at a snails pace. With a little research I learn it's the "Spirit of Innovation", model GZ-20, the "GZ" stands for Goodyear Zeppelin. Since 1928, Goodyear had named its blimps after the U.S. winners of America's Cup Yacht Race. In 2006, Goodyear started a contest to have the public name their blimps. Spirit of Innovation was the first airship to be named by the public. The Spirit is based at Goodyear's blimp base in Carson, CA and is scheduled to retire this year and replaced by the $21million "Zeppelin NT". I've always had appreciation and was thrilled to see it flying anywhere in SoCal. But seeing it fly so close right outside my home was exhilarating!

Right off the 405 in Carson, you can get a nice view of the famous Goodyear blimp. It sits isolated in a wide open field. The blimp takes off many times during the day. Getting a view of it taking off (with its steep angle ascent) is quite interesting. I was fortunate enough to get a ride on the Goodyear blimp. You cannot buy tickets for a ride on the Goodyear blimp. It is by special invitation only (or a date on ABC's The Bachelor or The Bachelorette). You will occasionally see Goodyear blimp rides offered through local charity events and raffles. There is an office where you check in. There is also a nice Goodyear sign where you can take pictures (you can also take pictures on the blimp). Something about the wide open field makes the size of the blimp more impressive when viewing it from the freeway. A similar effect happens when you approach it. The tiny cabin (called a Gondola) is engulfed by the huge oval balloon/envelope. As you approach the blimp, the sheer size of it is a lot to take in. When boarding the blimp, you actually have to board while it is moving. There is a little stepladder you must jump onto first (and then you climb in). Staff is there to help you on (you board one at a time). The blimp holds about 6 passengers not including the pilot. Fully loaded with passengers, the blimp's cabin is small but not crowded/crammed. You alternate seats throughout the ride (including a stop next to the pilot where he explains the old-looking controls and levers). It is quite loud so you have to wear headphones to communicate with everyone. You can open the tiny windows. The temperature up there is quite nice. You get a nice view of the South Bay on this blimp ride--it is high enough to appreciate a different perspective, but you can still see a lot of detail (thanks a lot to the steady cruising speed). Landing is interesting because the pilot has to descend at an angle and then level off. The pilot performs this many times (because you cannot descend all at once like an airplane). My friend asked how steep can you descend; you can imagine what happened next. The pilot performed a very steep decline. You get a clear view of the ground as it almost feels like you are at a 90 degree angle (though it is not actually near that...I think). The thrill and feel of that drop will compete with some roller coasters. The pilot was an older gentleman and a very nice guy (friendly and jokey). He seemed like he would be able to adapt to whatever the group dynamic was. Rides on the Goodyear blimp are scarce so if you get the opportunity to ride, you should definitely seize it. 5 stars because (1) how often do you get to ride on the Goodyear blimp and (2) Goodyear is "the" blimp.

Let me just say the The Good Year Blimp is way cooler when you see it on pictures! After being on a slight hiatus, it is now back up and running. I always pass through the city and see others taking rides or checking it out, and it looks quite nice and fun. Other than it sometimes being closed or on a break, I love seeing it around!

An amazing morning! Thank U Daisy Uribe.

We had the most incredible morning with Daisy Uribe and the ground crew for the Good Year Blimp. My husband and I moved to Long Beach a year ago. He is disabled. He was fascinated every time he saw the blimp over Long Beach. So I pulled up the web site and e mailed Daisy. Explained about my husbands disability and his fascination with the air ship. She got right back to me by e mail and said " how about a tour tomorrow morning". Well I was shocked so I called her. Not only was she serious when I explained my husband could not walk any distance she said "no worries we have a golf cart". My husband and I were thrilled. We got the VIP treatment and the history of the blimp up close and personal. This is a must do thing . Amazing. Thank U Daisy for making it happen.

Here was my experience: Vibe: Located in the heart of Compton--also known as "Hub City"--this airport sits right in the middle of neighborhoods and local businesses. It's nothing flashy, just a large open space with a steady presence of small aircraft activity. If you ever get lost, just follow the airplane sounds. This is a general aviation airport with a strong community feel. You can tell from the collaborations they have with local businesses and organizations. Overall (TL;DR): 5 Stars. A unique airport experience. From run clubs and yoga sessions to community events and pilot training, this space clearly serves the community in many ways. It's also the oldest airport in Los Angeles, which adds another layer of history and significance to the place. Tips: * Curious about the history? Stop by and check out the information they have on-site about the airport's story.

HEED THE WARNINGS AND SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE -- JUST CALL AN UBER OR ANOTHER TAXI COMPANY!…read moreTrust me; depend on them and you WILL be sorry. If you're going to the airport, I am especially talking to you! I have never dealt with such an unreliable and shady cab company in all of my life. All of the drivers (except Sam) have bad attitudes, and most of their cabs are FILTHY and smell like rolling ASH TRAYS masked with MUSKY FUNK, and most of the drivers I've had were extremely arrogant in the sense that if you're not going very far in the cab, you can expect a straight-up stank attitude from the driver from start to finish. And when I say that, I mean that, because I live within 1 mile of the airport, when they arrive and find out that's where I'm headed, they cop funky little attitudes because they know they get no surcharge for going into the airport (only out). Trifling. Just all around unpleasant. I recently booked online 2 hours ahead of time. 40 minutes AFTER my scheduled pick-up time a cab comes creeping up the street, notwithstanding that I booked 2 HOURS AHEAD OF TIME. My encounters with their incompetent dispatchers only exacerbated my aggravation. First, I called at the 5 minutes late mark, just to make sure a driver was enroute. I spoke to a "Tamika," who incidentally was the same girl that called to CONFIRM my online reservation shortly after I made it. Tamika claimed that a driver had already picked me up? Come on now. Like, seriously. Now I was getting irritated. I attempted to impart on her that that simply could not be since I had been waiting in the spot for pickup for 15 minutes and since I was obviously telling her I was NOT picked up. She put me on hold then came back on the line after a few minutes. She claimed a driver was now enroute and was "5 minutes away." 15 minutes later, still, no driver. I call the dispatch center again. I'm back on the line with Tamika and now I've lost all my patience with whatever games she's playing. Honestly, she sounded high drugs and lethargic, but I digress. Tamika now claimed that the driver was at the wrong address, but that he would be to my location "within 2-3 minutes." "Give him about 2-3 minutes," she said. 10 minutes later, still, no driver. I call dispatch again. This time, I'm on with "Karina." Karina proceeded to claim that a driver was "around the corner." By now, having heard this BS twice before from Tamika, I'd begun to think that they were playing some kind of sadistic game. I explained to Karina -- in not so patient terms -- that I'd heard the line she was giving me repeatedly from Tamika. Karina expressed utter indifference and kept repeating "Ma'am, I'm doing the best I can to help you," blah blah blah (you know how they do). Now, I'm furious. I hung up and sat there for a few more minutes. I get a call from Karina telling me that the cab is outside -- LIES. I WAS OUTSIDE, IN THE SAME SPOT FOR PICKUP. THERE WAS NO CAB. 5 minutes rolls by and finally a cab comes creeping up. OMFG. Never again. I was planning on booking them for another trip to the airport soon, but after this, and after reading the horror stories below, THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL I'd bank on them to get me to the airport in time for my flight. These people are FAR TOO UNRELIABLE to even be in business. What's more, they apparently have ZERO respect for people's time, or their money. And yet, they wonder why they're being overrun and made extinct by services like Uber. I've learned my lesson and will never again. SO DONE. Listen, if you're going to the airport, I assure you you'll do well to book SuperShuttle. -- the cost will be the same, but at least you can count on them showing up and not making you miss your flight.

Who does this to their customers?!?! Thank goodness I decided to call and confirm 10 mins prior to my pick up time. LA yellow cab bailed me out of this bind and picked us up in 5 mins. They even texted me 2 miles away. I swear I'm finding every review place, BBB, etc to complain. They almost ruined my trip. DO NOT USE THESE GUYS! very unreliable!
