Zamperini Field is a nice location for pilots and aviation fans. For kids who are fascinated by airplanes and helicopters it's a treat to be able to see (and hear) them take off and land. Parking is easy and it's a nice place for pilots to land. My friend has his own airplane and I've convinced him this is a better location than Santa Monica and Van Nuys to land and park. read more

Ever hear an airport described as clean and friendly? This one is. Airplanes are cool, especially the ones you can almost touch. We were visiting the Museum of Western Flight next door and thought we would just take a look. I felt like it was my neighborhood airport, on the list with barber, sushi joint, and dry cleaner. This is my local airport. Not a pilot, but a fan of aviation and photographer. They have a viewing area at the Airport/Adm Bldg. In addition they have a flight planning room, meeting room, restrooms, etc. Nice place to relax and watch. Western Museum of Flight is just next door. Outside you will see the YF-23, YF-17 and F-14A and inside they usually have a visiting aircraft on display as well A few warbirds and trainers call TOA home and you will see them tied down or flying in. . USCG MH-65C from LAX sometimes practices here as well. read more

Yelp 100 challenge! This place is magical. I met one of the last Tuskegee airmen today upon landing who was the nicest man ever. What a day. What a Man! I have digressed. This location is great for landing, and take off because not only do you have wonderful views of long beach and the port of long beach with amazing ocean views. But also, have a safe area where one can park their car on weekend excursions and no issues. Its very organized and I really like it. I prefer it over chino hills. Its cleaner, not as congested and just nice. Just a note for fellow yelpers who fly: because its located in a residential area there are specific times that one can fly in and out of Zamperini. 7am-10pm. No earlier than those times. Growing up in Torrance with a Pilot father I would often find myself at Zamperini. Back then the east side of the airport had minuteman missile silos! The famous Robinson helicopter is manufactured here...no longer in a relatively small facility on the Northeast side of the field, Robinson now has a vast manufacturing facility that takes up a majority of the south end. A great base for aerial sightseeing while you are in Torrance...just fly runway heading a couple nautical miles and you will be over the Pacific. Now as a Pilot myself I can almost hear my father as I take off! read more

A very busy little airport, right off PCH near my 'hood. It's named after Louis Zamperini, about whom I hear a movie is in the works. He's an Air Force war hero, who was a POW in WW ll. My plan is to, one day soon, rent a helicopter - including a pilot, of course - at Zamperini Field and take the grand tour of LA by air, which includes the coastline, the Hollywood sign close-up, downtown, et al. Years ago I wanted to get my pilots license until I realized after flying in a small plane that it is really boring after a while. It's like driving without the mass traffic and I have a fear of small planes now. Give me a 777 or 747 and I am a happy camper. BUT...for those that like to fly small private planes this is a great small airport that offers classes for pretty cheap too. I took a photo of the sign that showed they only charge $7 for overnight parking of your plane...that's hell of a lot cheaper that parking a car. I actually came here because I was hoping they had a little cafe to hang out and have some food and watch the planes but they don't. Robinson Helicopter is also located here. A much smaller museum than your regular bog standard aviation center but what it lacks in size it makes up for in friendly staff The guys there are awesome, very informative and take personal interest in making sure you enjoy your visit. There's a handful of planes to peruse and unlike many of the larger museum counterparts you can actually climb in to a couple of the fighter planes so that was great. We got to see an active Harrier "Jump Jet" from the Royal Navy, great too see such an iconic plane in such close quarters. There's a "Pad" that the guys can take you to that have an F14 Tomcat (talk to me goose!) amongst other planes that is at the end of the runway that houses the Robinson Helicopter corp hangers, that was a pleasant surprise. All in all a very nice experience, doesn't take a lot of time, but worth going to meet the fantastic guys that run the attraction. read more

My Father-in-Law has two planes and offered to pick us up here to fly us to Lake Havasu this past weekend. I guess if you are a pilot, this airport can get tricky because it's in LAX airspace, and is often covered with a fog layer, which makes it hard to fly in and out of it. However, I was lucky on the two days that we flew in and out of here, it was crystal clear and beautiful. The airport is nice, with a lounge and clean restroom. The office staff is very nice. They gave me a parking pass to leave my car there over the weekend. It's in a great location in the South Bay. Kids would love to come here and watch the planes. Too bad there's no restaurant on site, that would be a hit! read more

Since BF's plane is located here, I finally made the trek to Bonanza Row (or Alley? Lane? IDK...something like that). You know what? I love this airport. I love his hangar.....a very cool place to hang out. Is this a typical review of an airport? No. I don't fly, don't know much about planes and aviation (although I am learning) but I do like it and understand why the BF likes to spend alought (hee, hee) of time here. Big shock - I plan on spending more and more time here as well. Just remember folks, keep your phone in your pocket (not on the floor), make sure the main counter/desktops are clear and the floors in the hangar? Slippery when wet..... read more

I recently took my car in for service, and had a couple of hours to kill-and discovered that Zamperini Field was within walking distance. Formerly called Torrance Municipal Airport, it is now called Zamperini Field. Louis Zamperini was a local sports and war hero. The movie Unbroken was based on his life. The airport has 2 concrete runways, and an asphalt helipad which is used by Torrance Medical Center. The terminal is small. Robinson Helicopter Company does their entire operations on the southwest side of the airport. Make sure you visit the Western Museum of Flight-only $5.00 bucks to get in. Plenty of airplane memorabilia, and airplanes. I will return when I have more time, and better planning on my part. read more

There's a small flight museum that is fun to visit. Occasionally, they have air shows where more vintage planes fly in. It's a great place to take a flight, learn to fly a plane or even learn to fly a helicoptor. If you own a plane, it's a good airport to fly in and out of on your way to LA or to keep your plane in a hangar. Lot's of older pilots who fly here every weekend in their vintage planes. It's cool to see them do some stunts or see the old biplanes or zeros. If you've read "Unbroken, A WW2 story", this field is named after Zamperini and they have a lot of his old memorabilia and uniforms in the lobby by the entrance. Also, some of his items from the Olympics. Cool to go see. Read the book first. He used to show up here for the air shows. read more

Most call it Torrance Airport. Great to watch smaller aircraft and helicopters. Robinson helicopters seem to take off and land quite often. Used to be strawberries for sale by the Honda dealer but no more. Movie being made about the history of the air field. read more

I grew up around this airport, my father owns one of the SNJ Texans (War Dog) parked near the Robinson Helicopter buildings, and has been based here since 1992. I have seen the airport change an aweful lot in the last 21 years, back then there were more fields and trees than buildings, even then the buildings that were there were mostly the hangars at the east end, the control tower and a few WWII era areo repair shops and parts depots. It was certinly a quiet and simple old airfield back then, a greatplace to have fun flying and enjoying company with great people. Since then Ive seen the airport really expand and grow with all kinds of businesses and companies that have been invaluble to keeping the airport going and in the public concience, especially Robinson Helicopters. Although most of the old buildings, abandoned storage depots and fields of foxtails are now gone, and replaced with state-of-the-art facilities and hangars, I am really proud and happy to see how much our once-so-humble airfield has grown and expanded, we now have the headquarters for Robinson helicopters, a brand new flight school with very luxurious lounges and hangars, more room for corporate and transit jet parking, spacious car parking lots, heck we even have our own museum!...i just cant believe how great and advanced our little airport has become, truely something to behold, especially in such small communities like Lomita and Torrance read more

Super cute airport. I have been here several times for events in the rental rooms and for airport airplane events. Great experience here with the friendly staff when I rented the main room for a Toastmasters speech contest. The rates are also extremely reasonable but you must be a Torrance resident. The space is some what outdated but that's pretty common for these types of spaces. read more

My son was here on a cub scout field trip to see the Western Museum of Flight right next to the Flight tower. Staff were courteous and very patient with nearly 20 boys. They have a small store where toy planes and other airplane-related gear are for sale. They also have airplanes the boys could pretend to fly which was a huge hit. Afterwards, we got a tour of the tower and a brief Lesson on the tasks of the air traffic controller's duties. Lot of fun. read more

Surly staff who are typical government employees (excluding the FAA tower staff, they're great). Ridiculously high prices plus the bonus that you get to pay property tax on THEIR hangars. A "good ole boy" network of hangar availability (bogus waiting list) and anyone with the right connections can put pretty much anything in a hangar if they have a piece of an airplane there. Facilities are mediocre and you'll be treated as an intruder and a nuisance if you end up as a tenant. Moved to Arizona and found out how an airport is actually run and maintained by nice people who care about their PAYING tenants. Torrance airport only exists due to Robinson and the airport staff has the wrong idea about their obligation to the tenants. Skip this place with extreme prejudice. read more

Airport Has Become A Noise Nightmare For Torrance Residents! I live just over 2 miles from this airport. When I moved here in late 2012, I barely ever heard a plane from this airport in my neighborhood of South Torrance. Beginning abruptly in January 2014 all that changed. Suddenly, I was hearing planes swoop and snarl over my house, as if they were aiming for it. Beginning at 7:00 am, and ending at 10 pm, I started having a ridiculous problem with planes flying over: BE35's, BE36;s, C172s...and more. On weekends it averages 1every 3 minutes! I learned the names of the loudest ones and called the airport to report them. I was referred to their Noise Abatement department. I filed several complaints over the next months, seemingly to no avail.Then, in June, the local paper reported that due to the record number of noise complaints, the airport was moving its flight school to Hawthorne, in order to curb the noise. We are now at the end of August and i can see no difference whatsoever. The aircraft noise has put a serious damper on my enjoyment of Torrance. (Three have now flown by just this point in my writing of this review!) Incidentally, the airport, along with many others, launched a "webtrak" application for the public to track noisy planes. Try an experiment: Pick any hour any afternoon on this airport's webtrak and count the planes in Torrance: http://ems02.bksv.com/webtrak/toa Done? Ok now compare the same hour on the LAX webtrak: http://ems02.bksv.com/webtrak/lax4 Did you notice how many planes in Torrance are NOT LISTED on their own webtrak? Its very telling, and Torrance Airport (Zamperini Field) is either not being honest about the volume of its air traffic, or have become dangerously negligent- as they were in 2008, when they were held responsible for two helicopters colliding.Let's hope they will consider the surrounding neighbors and maybe this review can be removed & replaced with a "Much Improved" rating.
