Good Harvest is legit! When I called to make a reservation, they picked up the phone in Mandarin. Bold move, GH, bold move. This is indicative of their overall approach: authentic to the point of being inaccessible to the uninitiated. The food here is SO GOOD though, so here's a quick take for those of you new to hot pot -- you DESERVE this deliciousness. I hope this thorough review will encourage people who would otherwise be intimidated by this experience to give it a try! If you already know what hot pot is, keep scrollin'. ## tl;dr This is an authentic hot pot restaurant. The menu is kind of confusing. The servers speak better Chinese than English. Get lamb. Don't get the dry pot. It is super delicious. ## What is hot pot? Think of it as the entree course in a fondue restaurant, but with flavors and techniques honed for literal millennia. Meats, veggies, noodles, and more are cooked in a flavorful broths. The classic meat to get is ruby red cuts of lamb sliced so thinly they form little rolls. This meat is is swished around in the broth for a few seconds (seriously, like 5 seconds), the meat is cooked when red turns to gray/brown, and then it's ready to eat! Meanwhile, food that takes longer to cook floats around in the broth, waiting for its time, such as: veggies, meatballs, noodles, tofu, ... and lots else! As the meal goes on, the broth gets yummier and yummier, soaking up the flavors from food you've eaten. Periodically, additionally broth is added as the soup reduces. This isn't an activity for germaphobes, as everyone's reaching in and out of the same pot and chowing down, but it's actually quite sanitary: the broth is boiling! A *critical* accouterment to this whole process is the SAUCE. Classically, the base is sesame sauce: liquidy, tan-colored, kind of like peanut butter in a very general sense. Other salty, yummy flavors are added to this base, and everything you eat is dipped in it. ## What should you order your first time here? 1. All you can eat or a la carte? If you are 3-4 people or fewer, get the AYCE (usually $25). It's a great way to sample lots of different foods to figure out what you like, as the menu is a little confusing. If you are more than 3-4, it is a better deal to do it a la carte! You'll save a little bit of money, still get diverse options, and can get some premium cuts of meat or seafood not on the AYCE menu. Even if you're a big group but you're not sure what you want, the AYCE is a good way to get acquainted with everything. 2. Dry pot or hot pot? I don't really get the dry pot to hot pot transition that GH pushes. My recommendation is to get just the hot pot (broth, you dip stuff in it), and avoid the other option (like a skillet situation). 3. Broth type? Get the "yin yang" pot: it has a divider down the middle. In one, get the standard bone broth; it's delicious. In the other, get the spicy broth; ask them to calibrate it appropriately. (Warning: if you get cocky and ask for very spicy, they will DELIVER, and it will be a glorious pain.) If you have a vegetarian among you (this not an optimal restaurant for this, but it happens), you can make one of the sides a tomato broth. 4. Meat & seafood choices? Get the lamb. Feel free to try the ribeye rolls, prime beef, or pork belly. Get other things as you will. I don't like seafood (it's a sad life), but people have told me the fish and shrimp paste is really good: it's this mushy stuff the servers scrape into the broth, and it comes out delicious? Idk. My friends also enjoyed the scallops. 5. Other things to order Enoki mushrooms, lettuce/napa cabbage, various types of tofu, black fungus, and noodles are classic orders in my mind. I've been taught to save cooking the noodles for the end, but it is one of my favorite parts of the meal, so I rarely follow this guideline, and just dive in. Try the udon or sliced noodles, cooked until al dente, and slathered with sesame sauce. I've had good luck with the veggie combo platter they offer. 5. Sauce? There are two bars with little bowls for you to concoct your own sauce, and there's really no way to mess up! Start with a healthy serving of sesame sauce and add stuff. I tend to be a purist: sesame sauce with a few dashes of other flavors + salt. A friend literally went down the line and mixed every single offered ingredient. It was delicious. So do what you want. The best thing about hot pot is that it is delicious. A close second is that it is FUN. Hot pot feels so convivial and celebratory to me: you get to play with your food! A friend described her first experience as "primate enrichment" and "the best way to eat food!" Went for lunch with my son. This is actually the first time I have ever had hotpot. We had a very good experience. Was worried about the 2-hour limit but it was plenty of time to eat our fill. We did the half and half hotpot, spicy and milk broth. We did two chilies level and that spice level was perfect for us. We had enough food to feed 4 people, eyes bigger than our stomach, but we ate pretty close to everything. We also made the mistake of ordering too many "sides" which made it hard to eat more meat!!!! My wife and I wanted to try something new and decided to try hot pot. The food at Good Harvest was amazing and the service was great. We created our own hot pot from the back of the menu. My only complaint would be the menu was not explanatory and the drink menu only listed beer despite having a full bar up front. good lord I love hot pot. Just the fact that there are only two other locations in NY, I would say Cary is beyond blessed to have this restaurant. Yes, things can get pricey pretty quickly, but if you know what you want, it really isn't an issue. I've seen complaints about service and confusing menus, but I would consider it to be an authentic Chinese restaurant, so service of course is not going to be as proactively attentive as it is in American restaurants we take for granted. That being said, therefore it isn't really going to be considered rude to raise your hand and flag down a server; once you do, they will be more than happy help you with any questions. While definitely not necessary, it would be helpful to have someone in your party with some Mandarin-speaking skills. The servers do their best, but there still might be a bit of a language barrier. If you haven't had hot pot before, I would definitely recommend looking at the menu beforehand just to get some knowledge of what certain foods are (plus sometimes the Chinese names don't translate over very well into English). I have not yet tried any of the dry pot combinations yet, but I am told they are quite good as well. One thing to note for the spicy eaters: the spicy broth can be pretty fiery at first, but they add some of the normal pork bone broth to it when it boils down too low (could be good or bad for you depending on how hot you like your food). I'm not sure if you can request more of the spicy broth. Overall, LOVE this place. Definitely something to experience at least once in your life. I was super excited to go to this hotpot place because a lot of my friends recommended. Our server was nice at the beginning and told us how to order from the menu and I appreciate it; however, I felt like they gave more attention to customers who are chinese. There was a couple times where we wanted to order more meat and multiple servers had pass by us a couple of times and did not see if we needed something. On top of that, they didn't tell us where the sauces were and thank goddess that I read a review on Yelp about it. When I told my friend about this, she recommended me to order 5 plates of meats beforehand because they have a slow staff and she's chinese. I looked around as is my customary thing to do and noticed the table next to us had a huge pot on top of their burner and they were placing items inside of what looked like boiling hot broth! The sweetest waiter came over and spoke very little English. Luckily food is a universal language so we got along famously. He brought menus that outlined what we could put in our Hot Pots! We chose lamb, beef, shrimp, pork belly and a varied amount of vegetables and noodles! You place them in the broth of your choice and cook your meal right on the table. Keep in mind there were many other ppl there and they didn't have their checks. She was rude and rushed us out. this Establishment is morally corrupt. Has provided me my first experience of discrimination at a restaurant in my life. We came to the restaurant(where I have eaten before) and told them party of 2. Hostess told us 5 minutes. We were the only people waiting, seated 5 feet from the hostess. After about 4 minutes of waiting, two girls walk in who start to spark up a conversation with the hostess in Chinese. I see the hostess glossing over at us and all 3 of them looking back at us. After 45 seconds of talking she takes them and seats them. At this point I'm confused but I assume there must be a reason. She comes back and I'm just staring at her hoping for a explanation. After 30 seconds of just grilling her she says oh I'm sorry your table will be ready in 5 minutes(after about a total of 7 mins has passed)......... so that basically means she gave our table to these two Asian girls and now we have to wait another 5 mins... I immediately got up with my party and left, while the hostess kept begging and followed me outside to come back, I asked her multiple times why they were seated before us, all she said was sorry please come sit and that she will get us a table. After I left I called to speak to someone who can speak English and was called back from a New York area code. Who then said the lady told him she called us and we didn't hear so she gave the table to the two girls. I am appalled at this lady's ability to tell such a bold faced lie when we sat 5 feet from her the entire time we were there from walk-in to until we stormed out she never moved further than 5 feet from us. We could have heard her if she even whispered, we could see her in front of us the entire time, we could have seen if she even glanced over at us. It is a traditional Chinese Hot Pot restaurant (google the term, before you go The restaurant is better for four or more diners, although they had some offerings for a couple. I got the bull frog, which was cooked with seaweed knot, ginger sticks and other things I couldn't identify. The bull frog came with white rice,a cup of soup (broth with mild flavor), steamed or boiled fungus (brown mushrooms) and marinated radish. I specifically asked for mild....the receipt indicated mild BUT it was not my definition of mild. I was able to eat the food and I enjoyed it, BUT be warned their food is spicy. Also the bull frog has bones in it, so be careful My husband got the Prime rib plate with black pepper. It was cooked with the same stuff as my dish and the same side dishes. We were told that it had no spice...NOT.....it was as spicy as mine. The burn is in the front of the mouth, not the back. The beef was not what American call prime rib and it had bones also. I was glad we tried it and I'd love to go back and try it with another couple or two, so I can try the Hot Pot menu. Most customers were Asian and knew what they were doing. I'd love to go with someone familiar with the cuisine. If your adventurous, try it. I like the food flavor, texture and uniqueness. All the food seems pretty fresh, and the spiciness levels are quite amazing if you're here for that. Overall, just a very well-run establishment - exactly what you want from a hot pot experience. I will also add that Good Harvest has my vote over the newer SoHot. SoHot has a more new/slick vibe and allows you to order on iPads, I had some trouble with ordering things that never showed up at SoHot. Interesting take on restaurant etiquette I'd say? We had all you can eat hot pot so after we are almost finished with food on the table we asked the waitress for the menu so we could order a second round. We eventually only ordered two rounds and neither was a lot of food so we could finish them all. But either way waitress gave a big eye roll as if the request was ridiculous. I mean I have always said thank you when anyone brought us water and food and I'm sorry if there was anything at all I did that made her feel offended? By the end another waiter came to collect our bill but after we paid the bill she came to double check. One thing a little off is that she stood right by our table to examine the pay slip (I'm assuming for how much tip we gave?). I don't blame her because I'm not sure if she's actually aware that she's not supposed to do that but if any waiters or waitresses could see this, please don't do that to your customer. I'm new to hotpot eating so I relied on recommendation my wife. The menu is very extensive and gives you many options to choose from. Although my wife is very familiar with pho eating our waitresses were quite accommodating with going over some recommendations and pairing of foods.
