I would not recommend this place for two reasons. 1. It is not a dine-in restaurant. It is a take-out place with tables. If you decide to eat inside it appears dirty and ill-equipped. They will serve you food on flimsy paper plates and make you eat with the cheapest plastic utensils that money can't buy. You can't even order a simple cup of water. You have to buy water. 2. The food is bland and lacks any Chinese flavor. Not even chili oil makes my General Tso's chicken taste passable. The food is chopped so large that it is hard to eat with the plastic forks. My wife ordered Hibachi Chicken, which looked like chunks of boiled chicken. We thought Hibachi Chicken meant that they cooked it on a Hibachi grill but there wasn't a single grill mark to be found. The sauce was bland and the 'Yum Yum' sauce was not that 'Yum' Drive a little farther and find a Chinese restaurant that serves Chinese food. read more

I have been eating here since 2003 when I moved to Apex. At that time, this was outstandingly good food at very reasonable prices. I easy ate there once a week. It is family owned and I have literally watched their 2 kids grow up there. Something has happened over the last 2 years tho... The business hasnt changed owners but the owners are no longer a daily presence there. In fact, I havent seen them in over a year. Their food quality has nose-dived and the flavors are no longer there. What used to be 5 stars, is now barely a 3. After the last food we got there, I have decided, after 13 years, to no longer to eat there. Its sad really. I am actually driving to Morrisville for my chinese fix now despite living 1.2 miles from this resturant. If you want run of the mill, dead average chinese...this is the place to come. read more

Took out the other night: shrimp and broccoli and egg foo young, shrimp roll. Shrimp roll was excellent and not a bit greasy. S&B was also very good. EFY was also not dripping grease like other Chinese restaurants and tasted pretty good so I have to give them a very good rating. read more

I go here to China Chef once in a while as a solid lunch alternative to the same ol' thing. It's not a fancy place or one that would be exhaulted as top of the line cuisine, but for decent "Americanized Chinese" food for a lunch break from work or a quick bite, it gets the job done. Located in the Lake Pine shopping center in Apex, it is your typical shopping center Chinese food stop. As I mentioned before, no elaborate setup for decor. Simple but clean, and a few tables with chairs if you choose to eat in. The food is ok, like I said it gets the job done if you are hungry. Pretty good steamed dumplings (the sauce they put with it does perk them up). I like their wonton soup, but I always like wonton soup, a standard with me. The sesame chicken is good in that there is an ample portion of chicken, and the sauce is not so syrupy and sweet, a good compliment without going too far with the sweetness. However, like most places comparable to this one, if you order beef with broccoli/chicken with broccoli, there always seems to be an over abundance of broccoli, not enough meat for my taste. The Moo Goo Gai Pan is pretty good, good choice for a meal. Drinks are just canned drinks and bottled water from the cooler in the dining area, no fountain drink setup. To sum up, great for a quick bite and take care of the hungrys...not a place for a first (or any) date. The staff, always nice, service is good. I ordered chicken fried rice, something I've had before at many different places. this one was an embarrassment. The chicken was completely unseasoned. It just taste like all they did was chop up the chicken and cook it. No seasoning not even salt. The chicken is white that's disgusting. The rice and everything else to. So this china chef is a family owned Resturant. There are two others locally, owned by siblings. We have been coming to this particular one (in Lake Pine shopping center next to Kroger) for the past 15 years. The food is consistent. We love it!! The owner knows when I call it's a large order due the to size of my family. We get a smorgasbord!! The Egg foo Young, house special lomein & shrimp w lobster sauce are GREAT!! We know the Americanized dishes of fried rice & chicken wings aren't REAL chinese but still reminds us of what we would get in NY. Service is always great. I highly recommend them read more

Stopped here on the way to Costco. I was not too hungry so you I ordered large egg drop soup and hot and soup r soup. Egg drop soup had ok flavor, nothing that stands out. I ordered the hot and spicy soup, extra spicy. It tasted bland. I guess if I had ordered it regularly it would of tasted bland. A friend recommended them and it was a good recommendation! I've struggled to find good Chinese food here. I ordered garlic shrimp and General Tso chicken. The shrimp was a touch overcooked but, I'm from a seafood town and am pretty picky. It was filled with tons of shrimp and lovely vegetables! The good kind. The kind you don't see anymore like water chestnuts and baby corns and snow pea pods and broccoli. The flavor was delicious! I ordered the generals chicken extra spicy. And it was! The sauce wasn't like the kind I've seen before but, it was good! The crab rangoons were crispy, crunchy and delicious! I say all this first because even though it's clean inside, I would have walked right by it! I have never ordered from a Chinese restaurant with pictures for a menu. Quick when you don't want to cook. The price reflects the quality - not as fresh ingredienrs as I'd like, but its better than eating other fast food. Can't compare to Pei Wei but then its half the cost. This is our go to dinner a couple nights a month. read more

First time ordering here, the Sesame Chicken was pretty flavorful but the egg roll left a lot to ne desired. Is it so hard and time consuming to make fresh egg rolls. these frozen ones have no taste. I had a bad experience, and I do not recommend this restaurant. I ordered food on the phone for take out; that went as expected. The store seemed clean and it was empty for Thursday at 6:30 pm. The girl behind the counter greeted me when I walked in but was very distracted and interested in her phone when she was giving me my food and we were paying. We got the food home, it smelled good in the car. We opened the bag, and the lid was not secured on to the little tub of sticky sweet n sour sauce that just comes with the appetizer we bought. It got on our clothes, on the table, and the floor. I'm not blaming the restaurant for the sauce getting on our clothes and on the floor, but I'm curious about what happened with the lid on the sticky sauce and why it appeared to have exploded in the bag on our uneventful 5 minute ride home. I don't know, but it's worth mentioning. The order was correct but the food did not look like what we thought the food should look like (in comparison to the other neighborhood chinese restaurants). We ordered 2 combos: the shrimp lo mein with white rice and the general tzo's chicken with fried rice. We also got an extra egg roll and crab ragoon appetizer (+ the sauce that comes complimentary). I tried everything; I wouldn't recommend any of it unless you were starving and it was free. It's just really poor quality food. So far, none of us have gotten sick. it's 7:30 when I wrote this review. Also- This is the first time I went to a chinese place and didn't get a fortune cookie. I don't particularly care about fortune cookies, but I thought I'd throw that out there because my family member does like them. Good luck to the restaurant and the patrons. The food that I always get is the teriyaki chicken and the sesame chicken the owners are very friendly kind and know what I always get because I always go there. They have very good manners. And there food is delicious it fills my tummy every time. And now they deliver so we don't have to get out of our house and order something. One of my favorite Chinese take out restaurants I've found. I'm vegan and the tofu is done perfect, the sauce is plentiful and very tasty, and the veggies are fresh and cooked perfect. Rice is typical.. sometimes I sub plain fried rice for the white and they were fine with it from the start. I've tried the garlic, Szechuan, and hunan style dishes and all taste great. I prefer the garlic. I can't comment on the meat dishes but all bean curd ones which I've tried have been delicious. Co-workers always comment when I bring it back to work on how good it smells. Young attractive lady at register always seems to be in a bad mood. I try cheering her up by being pleasant. That'd be my only fault with their service. Once she hung up on me since I paused about 5 seconds in the beginning of our conversation on the phone when I ordered. I called right back and she took the order. She doesn't seem to want to be there. But food is very good. And I've tried a lot of Chinese food and maybe 10 different take out restaurants in the Cary and Apex area. read more

There was nothing in the fried rice -- no eggs, sprouts, or veggies -- except for rice. The sauce on our beef and snowpeas dish had a strange aftertaste. Tried take out last night - fried rice with white meat only chicken. UGH - disgusting - the chicken was translucent - how does that happen? The rice - just short of paste.
