This was my first time having dim sum here. The restaurant is small but we managed to get a table right away. Service was friendly, we stuck around to chat after eating and they didn't rush us to leave. They serve dim sum all day and we ordered a bunch of dishes to share. We came here for Chinese New Year eve dinner and brother's birthday. It's close to home with a drive to Fraser Street. Parking is on the street or residential area. The tables are quite close and cramped to each other and the restaurant was really busy, of course because it's CNY eve. We ordered items we like rather than dishes you need to eat for CYN eve. It was enough for the 6 of us. We were full and were able to eat all with no leftovers. Yes! I am not a fan bringing home leftovers. Went to this restaurant with a party of six for the first time. The food was not very impressive. One of our dishes that was ordered was a pork belly dish. The pork belly was cold and tough. When prepared properly the pork belly is supposed to be tender and hot. It is my favourite Chinese pork dish and I've had it at other Chinese restaurants and I will say this was the worse I've ever had. The other five dishes were not stand outs and we've had better at other restaurants. Admittedly, the restaurant was busy when we visited but that is not an acceptable excuse to serve cold and poorly prepared food. First time come here, was recommended by a friend, small restaurant good for family gathering. Parking at both front at back, but have to pay. We ordered few traditional Cantonese dishes, all very good, especially the fried tofu, crispy also tender. The restaurant must be running for many years, decorations look a bit old, but I like places like this where you can truly enjoy the food and relax. Good Choice Restaurant's ALL DAY dim sum is a great bang-for-a-buck, especially for take out! They offer 10% off all take out orders, which is an absolute steal considering their large portions here. Whether you're looking to dine-in or take-away, they have great safety measured in place, and their food is sure to satisfy. For dining in, I highly recommend making a reservation first & calling beforehand, as they do not have many tables inside and gets quite busy during lunchtime - ESPECIALLY on the weekends. All their dim sum offerings I've tried so far have been nothing short of amazing. Flavourful, fresh, and comforting, as dim sum should always be. I've been here so many times and consistently enjoy the food here that I had to update my review and give this place the five stars it deserves. Had dim sum today and everything was fresh and done to perfection. The pea shoot gingko bean curd dish was light and refreshing. The shrimp dumplings were well sized and good for the two of us. The XO radish cake was nicely fried, not burnt or greasy. Even the tea was delightful (we ordered the 'iron' tea, sorry, don't know the exact English translation). This is our regular dim sum place. I've been here twice now, both for dim sum. The first time everything was pretty good. Yesterday when I came, not so much. I usually always order the same stuff, sometimes I change it up a little. Yesterday I ordered the har gow, the scallop dumplings, the sticky rice, the radish cake, the jelly fish with bean curd, the deep fried tofu and the chui chow dumplings....haha! I know that's a lot of food but I actually take most of it home. The dumplings seemed to be a bit overcooked, the skin of the chiu chow dumpling was soooo thick, and everything else was really bland, no salt or anything. The best thing was the radish cakes. Wasn't too impressed at all yesterday. Both times I went the service was pretty good. It seems to be a pretty clean place and it's not very big. I get off work early on Fridays so I can get there pretty early but after 11:30 or so it starts to fill up. Not sure if I'll be back anytime soon........ read more

We come here frequently, but today on Mother's Day, I have to write a bad review. Basically- AVOID THIS PLACE FOR SPECIAL OCCASION DIM SUM! They clearly aren't equipped to handle the crowd, nor do they care about the quality of food on a busy day. The bad: - har gow didn't stick together in one piece. It was all falling apart. - found a glass shard in the green beans. - the man server was super super rude. - they squished out table of 8 into a table of 6. - "deep fried sticky puff minced meat" looked like crap. It was under cooked. Edible, but cmon why would you bring that out? - had to constantly ask for tea refills. Everything you wanted you had to ask. - spare rib pieces were all fat. My friend suggested my boyfriend and I for dimsum - particularly at this restaurant. Location-wise it was convenient since we live nearby. I wasn't feeling well when I arrived. Waiting did not take as long considering I made a reservation beforehand. I would consider the service was fast. Food was quite delicious. Staff was fine. The only reason why I gave it a 3/5 is because when I was paying for my bill, the waitress (I believe she was the owner?) pointed out that I did not include tips. Was that really necessary? The passive-aggressive tone made it a turn off. I felt forced and I'm certain by law you're not REQUIRED to tip. Move over Kirin, Good Choice restaurant is turning out to be my favourite go-to dim sum restaurant. Nestled amongst the trove of tasty Asian restaurants on Fraser street, Good Choice stands out for its non-greasy dim sum and unique specialty dishes. The usual suspects are delicious: shrimp dumplings, sui mai, chicken feet, deep fried squid, deep fried tofu, bbq pork buns. But wait, there's more! There's fried rice with tons of crispy garlic, thin flat noodles with juicy and flavourful spareribs, and a special dish that's scrawled on the menu at the bottom (there's no english translation, but it's tasty, trust me). Even better, it's all not very expensive -- as a group of 4, we managed to eat for $22 a couple after tax + tip. read more

I love this restaurant, as it is unlike other restaurants. It is a Chinese restaurant with a flare of Homestyle cooking, giving it a homey feeling. For instance we ordered a sweet and sour pork, but they added some lychee for a twist. My all time favourite is the braised egg tofu. After passing by this small restaurant time and time again, we finally decided to try this place for dinner. We made reservations, and thank goodness we did, because the place quickly filled up. We started with crab and fish maw soup, which was very fresh tasting. Main dishes included sliced rock cod with seasonal vegetables, beef tenderloin with honey and pepper, sliced chicken with black bean sauce, and steamed tofu and scallops in garlic sauce. We also ordered the Good Choice chow mein. All of the food was prepared with fresh, high quality ingredients. The rock cod was soft and flavourful, and the broccoli it was served with was tender but not mushy. The honey sauce in the beef dish was delicious. The only dish that was sub-par was the chow mein, which needed a bit more flavour in the sauce. Overall, a really top quality Chinese restaurant with great food. I will definitely want to come back, and I'd like to try the dim sum here as well. Menu: Pretty standard Cantonese dishes; soups and appetizers, fresh seafood, beef, chicken & pork dishes, fried rice and chow mein. We came here for dim sum based on all the great Yelp reviews. I have to say meh it wasn't all that special. Basically the good and bad kind of balanced each other out. The good: The dumplings were super sized and everything was piping hot; the food came out quickly; the spicy tofu was a winner with everyone; I didn't get an msg buzz after eating; the hosts were both really nice; there was no line up at 11pm; and there was free parking on the street. Areas they could improve include: sprucing the place up a bit as the decor is a bit bland and boring (i.e., dusty rose is so early 1990's); increasing the dim sum selection as it is limited and a bit pedestrian; improving the green onion pancake recipe as they were really bland; doing quality assurance checks on the gai lan as what we were served was the size of small branches. I have had better and I have had worse. So three stars it is. Maybe we will come back for dinner one night and see what else they have to offer. read more

Been here for dim sum a few times. Nothing special but they open early which is nice if you want dim sum before 9 am. The restaurant is very small. Parking is terrible after early morning. 3.5 stars. We ordered the bean curd with pumpkin and enoki, shrimp dumplings, dried scallop sticky rice and the pea shoots with bean curd. Serving size is decent and the prices are too. I would say my favourite dish was the pea shoots. The broth was clean and flavourful and the whole dish was not oily, very nice. The sticky rice and shrimp dumplings were okay; the sticky rice was bit overcooked. We also liked how the sauces were clear, light and flavourful. Go before 11 am for a 10% discount! Good choice...NOT such a good choice. After hitting the bullseye with Kalvins Szechuan on my last Yelp internet chinese food restaurant tour and then this, 2 stars is a very fair rating. The problem with this restaurant is that is is average at best eventhough there are some good points about this restaurant, overall it is an average restauarant with average food and avereage service. My family ordered the 6 person set menu for 7 people. The first problem started when they told us they were out of this and that after we had ordered our dinner. The boss started substituting it with other items on the menu without consulting us which changes our 6 course menu to a different 6 course menu that we did not order. Secondly, the order of the dishes was all mixed up and 3 times they brought us dishes meant for other tables and we sampled them and then they took them away. 1 time they brought the wrong dish and we started eating it and then said they made a mistake and we still had to pay $20 bucks. They brought the soup the third course in and the appetizer the second dish in...really messed up. Although the chicken and duck was good most dishes looked like chop suey you would get at the mall and even then the mall chop suey might look better. I am a serious foodie of all ethnicities and this choice was an average choice and has jaded me a bit from listening to other reviewers. Take it from me...when choosing a good chinese restaurant you have to not only pick the best reviewed but consider the number of reviews and how recent they are. Good Choice is one the hidden gem dimsum restaurants when my wife and I want a change of pace. It's small and intimate (only about 15 tables) and if you get there early enough, there's no wait. I think the largest table seats maybe 8, so this isn't the place to bring the giant group, but it's terrific for a table of 2 to 4. All the typical items are good: ha gow, siu mai, beef balls, various dumplings, buns, and so on. They also make pretty decent xiao long bao. Occasionally we find that one item isn't quite the same as last time (e.g. this morning our salt & pepper squid was a little too heavy on the salt side), but nothing lethal. If nothing else, the slight inconsistency from visit to visit shows the items are homemade. read more

We have lived in the neighbourhood for almost 5 years but have never tried Good Choice. I am not sure why. The other day driving by we noticed their sign saying open for take out during COVID -19. A lot of the restaurants in the neighbourhood have closed so we decided to give them a try and support a local business. I'm glad we did. The food was delicious, and tasted like home cooking. The deep fried tofu was great as was the garlic gai lan. We will definitely order her again. Our portions were very large and I think there is an option to order small medium or dim sum size so just keep that in mind. read more

Perhaps a name like "Great" Choice may have warranted more investigation, but this place certainly lives up to its name. Good Choice stands out because it was not busy on a Saturday morning at 11am. If you've explored dim sum in Vancouver, you know what an ordeal it can be to find a place for hangover-helper without a mass of people trying to yell out the number in their party at the front door. Not busy, meaning almost empty. Not busy meaning that it seemed almost too peaceful. Dim sum and bustle go together like shrimp and hot sauce. The staff is super-courteous, which was another bonus. The dim sum menu is good. And using the benchmark items of har gow, siu mai and deep fried spicy tofu, everything was A-OK. The same goes for everything else we ordered. Nothing failed. On the other hand, nothing stood out. The siu mai is large, but a bit bland, with a few pieces of unchewables discarded. It's a solid menu, but I think average in terms of taste. Portions and price certainly are the sweet spots. Under $20 per person and you're full until dinner time. One thing I noticed here is, like many dim sum restaurants, there is an automatic charge for tea per person. This unassuming teeny tiny restaurant really surprised with fresh, big flavoured dim sum dishes. The panfried chive and shrimp dumplings, green beans and rice rolls were pretty much perfection. Everything was hot, fresh and nummy. I'm really looking forward to going back and trying more things to see if this place has what it takes to be placed in five star territory. Vancouver has numerous dim sum restaurants and I've found the ones I've been to to have been consistent in quality and service, which is why I was pretty surprised that Good Choice was apart from the pack. The restaurant seems old and small, but it fit seemed to fit many tables without seeming crowded. They seemed to be maybe understaffed as there was a line forming at the door but empty tables as well. We ordered about 8-9 dishes, though I noticed some of my favourites that were common in other dim sum restaurants were not available here. The menu selection also seemed smaller than other dim sum places in the area. It's not a big deal because there were still more than enough choices. Unfortunately, the service was slow. The restaurant wasn't packed but it seemed to take forever for our first dishes to come out, and even then they seemed to just trickle out. We finished each dish long before the following dish came out. It didn't feel like dim sum. It seemed like we were eating 1 piece each every 10 minutes, though eventually the last 3 dishes came out at once. The food quality was also not up to par during this visit. I was surprised that we were only given a small vinegar dip for one of the dishes. I was sure that the other things we ordered usually came with sauces at other dim sum restaurants. The sui mai and har gow is comparable to other restaurants but the chicken feet was tougher than I'm used to. We also ordered a dish with kabocha that was extremely undercooked.
