We had dinner at Petite Percebes/Good Bones on a trip to the Mendocino area in April. The service was pleasant and friendly, the space felt comfortable with both tables and couches (no live music at the time we visited), and everything we ate was delicious and nicely presented! Our favorites were: + Broiled oysters with bone marrow butter, Parmesan crema, and breadcrumb: although I'm not usually a huge fan of oysters, I did enjoy these particular ones! + Lemon cream pie with tangerine, lemon curd, brown butter graham, citrus marigold Chantilly: we split one slice of this pie, but I could've eaten a few more slices of the pie by myself (if my stomach had space left). Perfect ending to the meal. + Primavera panisse: crispy chickpea fritters topped with a variety of greens and flower petals. + Yuzu marigold kombucha (Wilder x Petite Percebes collaboration): this was a refreshing, lightly sweet complement to the heavier dishes of the meal. We also tried the cassoulet (which had roasted chicken thigh, Roundman's garlic sausage, pork belly, Heirloom beans - a heartier meaty dish); and the potato chowder with oyster mushrooms, spring greens, and wild nettle pistou (we loved the mushrooms in it). Loved visiting Good Bones! A hidden little gem among the coast. I visited on a Sunday morning with a small group of friends for a quick bite to eat before we headed off for a hike. Inside was huge! Giant bar, tons of tables for dining, along with a stage where it looked like they hosted live music! We ordered our meals up at the front counter and took a seat in the dining area. I ordered a Golden State Mighty Dry cider and their grilled cheese sandwich with added caramelized onions and mushrooms. We were the only people inside, but food came out quick. Everyone was a huge fan of their meals. I loved my sandwich, the bread was absolutely delicious. Also was a huge fan of those mushrooms they used! We ended up leaving with a fresh baked loaf of bread when we left too for home. Service was great, food was on point, and loved the vibe they had going. The menu, and restaurant name, has changed a bit to more of a vegan experience. Some of our dishes were very tasty, some were not as well developed (soup and salad with very heavy lemon dressing were not as successful). Carrot cake did not work as a dessert- more of a quick bread with frosting. However, their sourdough bread is outstanding! And the dish with a polenta-type tart was very tasty. Room is pretty dark and has more of a supper club feel. It can be extremely crowded here in high season so plan to come early. Since everyone orders at the bar, there can be a bottle neck in ordering food. Small town patience goes a long way! Setting in the town of Caspar makes this feel a bit more local eatery than dining in nearby, touristy Mendocino town. read more

Cutest little place you've ever seen. In Caspar? Where is Caspar? Tiny California town overlooking the Pacific Ocean, somewhere north of Mendocino and south of Fort Bragg. We went to have a glass of wine and watch the sun go down. Limited blackboard menu changes daily. We had the Cesar salad (it had real anchovies on top.) An unusual presentation but very fresh and delicious. Service people were attentive and knowledgeable about the food and wine. I had a glass of French muscadet, which I had never had before. It's not something I usually find around the Bay Area. It was light and crisp and just delightful. My new favorite thing. So I had a second. For dessert we had a thing called Peaches & Cream. A block of frozen custard with little ribbons of salted caramel running through it. On top was some very wild tasting peaches, bee pollen and marigold petals. Wowzers. Music was lovely. Everything they played was something I've never heard before. Low key soul, reggae, samba, and even some rock. Even my boyfriend said he liked the music and, as he says, he was born without the music gene. I'm grateful it wasn't too loud. Located in an old, old, nondescript building, you might think nothing were going on in there. But, oh, there's something nice going on in there. Good food, good wine and smooth vibe. Ocean view. What a delightful meal for lunch. This was a couple weeks ago, a rice bowl with chicken & greens. Everything perfect perfectly cooked. There are some sort of sauce on the chicken and it really hit the spot. It's my first time going and I will definitely go again. I love their up cycle eclectic fence also. I was about to leave because my puppy was causing a fit in the car; someone came out to ask me if they could help me and I explained my situation when they invited me to sit outside where dogs are allowed. Offering a minimalist menu, it makes it easy to choose what to eat. Everything is tasty and wholesome. Always a vegan option too! And the staff is super friendly and helpful. It's a quaint old Inn restaurant that has been updated only to accommodate live music. It's a great venue. Come early, as it gets packed quickly and sometimes the food sells outs! I love the Reuben, loaded with meat and has a homemade remoulade on it. Local wines and beers as well. read more

If I could give it more stars I would! We stumbled on Good Bones by accident on a Sunday afternoon as we were randomly sightseeing along the Mendocino Coast. Although the place is called Good Bones, the kitchen is run by Petite Percebes, and the food is FANTASTIC. It was so fresh and presented in such a lovely way, it felt like it was something that would be served at a pretentious overpriced restaurant in Carmel or Pacific Grove... but here it is, fantastic food in an adorable and entirely unpretentious classic setting in Caspar. What a unique and awesome spot just 8 minutes from downtown Mendocino! This is a little restaurant in Casper that creates unique menus with food from local sources. It is located in an old home and feels like you've walked into a friend's place to have dinner with! They have a bar and plenty of seating. Homemade sourdough, local beers and kombucha on tap, and INCREDIBLE food. The star for us was the quarter chicken which had the most insane flavor paired with cabbage and potatoes and a delicious chimichurri sauce. Not pictured we got seared cod which was caught that day and nice slice of chocolate cake that was simply perfect. My only critique would be since the menu is new every couple days with locally grown goods would be more description on the menu or from the servers about each dish. This would only enhance the excitement for the amazing meal this restaurant will prepare. So excited to go back to this place. Definitely make a pit stop here if you are in town!! read more

This was amazing find. From the fresh sourdough, beet salad, chickpea cakes with a spread that was yum as well as black trumpets and some greens. Don't miss Good Bones if you are in the area! A true hidden gem situated right off the highway between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. They have a small menu with simple, fresh, hearty food that tastes delicious and leaves you feeling good. Particularly excellent is their homemade bread, which they use for all their sandwiches. It's in a cool old pub and retains that aesthetic. Friendly, non-pretentious service and our food arrived quickly. I hope we can return. read more

Beautiful Good Bones. Staff is friendly enough. Owners are super nice and have a great sense of style. Good is Ah-MAZING! Every flavor is there. The food is not over salted! You can taste the ingredients. It's so good! There are vegetarian options. The bread, oh my, so good!!!! I had this onion tart that just dripped with caramelized onions and these crunchy cookie like wafers in between. There was this smooth onion buttery like crème in each layer as well. Decadent Is all I can say about that opinion tart. I also had the celery salad (?) it had fennel in it and an amazing Mayer lemon dressing that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. This place is really good. My full stamp of approval. I'm me thing is if you are really hungry and expecting a large plate of food this isn't your spot. They are currently only open for lunch a few days a week but it's definitely worth a visit. The staff was really nice and friendly. The food was delicious and you can tell the thought and effort they put into their dishes. The bread is house made for their sandwiches so we tried two of those: - the pulled pork sandwich was our favorite, it's well balanced and not greasy and heavy like you'd expect. The kumquat kosho and slaw gives it a nice bright acidity. - the veggie sandwich was also really good and unique, with carrots and fennel and a pesto hummus. We have been missing Good Bones for awhile and thought to have dinner again. So I looked on their website to see what's up and found out that dinners have been put on hold for a little bit but they're serving LUNCH from 11-3, Friday, Sat, Sunday. So we hopped over and enjoyed a meal of sandwiches, soup, coffee, beer. The food was lovely...homemade, fresh. It's as if you have a good friend who is an excellent cook and they invited you over for a meal...nothing tastes like "restaurant food". My taste buds would have liked a little more salt/pepper/pickles in the egg salad. The pork sandwich special was delicious. Moist, juicy....a smattering of chips to counterpoint the savory sandwiches would have been perfect. By the way, the bread is homemade; what a nice change. Soup was a filling bowl of greens, beans and tasty broth (we ordered too much but still ate it all!). I can easily recommend stopping by - Good Bones is definitely an important addition to the Caspar community and to dining in the Fort Bragg/Mendocino corridor. We were yelled at and I was called a bigot by the waiter Nathan. We were stunned by the angry response. I wrote to the owner the following day, about the incident and silence from him. We're local and Good Bones itself is amazing, but we recently ordered food from Petite Percebes, who is operating out of their kitchen. We ordered a BLT ($19) and a grilled cheese ($19). They had great flavor but the bread was toasted/cooked in so much oil or fat that it gave me a belly ache. I don't have a particularly sensitive stomach. The sandwiches were of very modest size and didn't come with anything additional besides a slice of a pickle. I spent a good amount of money, walked away with a stomach ache, and was hungry shortly thereafter. I don't mean to criticize these folks too badly, but I cannot say I'll order from them again :/ read more

WOW. Just wow. This place has been open for 3 months under the creative direction of Chef Miles. The menu is carefully chosen with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients...and it is off the charts! Salads are very generous, and all other courses are ample as well. From the fresh baked bread...all the way to desert...ingredients were fresh, intentional and flavorful. We ate here for a birthday celebration, and the honored guest said "this is one of the best meals of my life". Yes...we are foodies from the Napa area...and we know good food! Such delicious food. You can tell they cook with love....and the freshest of ingredients. I got the half sandwich-half soup lunch option. The bread was a house baked sourdough and the turkey tasted like they roasted it that morning. The herbs in the beany brothy soup must have been garden picked, and the delicate seasoning was light and savory. My biggest regret? That I passed up the cookies on the front counter. I need to get back in there soon! We ate inside the Good Bones historic roadhouse. They keep the flavor of that history with musical events, and also offer catering and private events. The location is just around the corner from Jug Handle State Natural Reserve with its lovely beach, and the Ecological Staircase Trail. Also, very close to Russian Gulch State Park. So, if you want to pick up a lunch and take it with you to a nearby scenic spot that's an option too. Even though I live locally I didn't know about Good Bones, until a friend raved about their rice bowls. Caspar is such a tiny town it's easy to drive by...but get in here! We visit the Mendocino coast almost yearly. We have eaten at the "best" restaurants and have both enjoyed the experience and have often been disappointed. The hidden gems stand out for us such as the departed Wild Fish...our new find?....Good Bones in Caspar. The setting is historic and is somewhere between a great old bar and the locals favorite place and hangout. The food was superb and earned all praise we can express. Succulent, tasty, well prepared, beautiful execution. The rock cod was so tender, flavorful, and almost fragile to the touch and bite. The notes in the chicken broth were multi layered and truly added to the symphony of the fresh fruit and produce that was likely grown in a garden either outback or nearby. Good Bones Kitchen in Caspar is my new favorite restaurant!!! Nice crisp atmosphere, charming staff and an imaginative menu. I found out the menu changes regularly with the availability of ingredients, how cool is that? That translates to a fresh, in season menu with surprises and a chef that is all in the game. The presentation was sophisticated, the flavors exciting, prices quite reasonable and selection was good for dietary restrictions. I have never tasted olives like these and the halibut sashimi was excellent! The marinade on the dicon was subtle and where did they get that salami? I have heard it said that a restaurant can be gauged by its bread, well Good Bones Kitchen has in-house baked bread that is to die for. This is the kind of bread you would expect to find in a fairy tale cottage. Can you tell I love really good bread? Plus so many places these days have rather indifferent service but at the Good Bones Kitchen I found a refreshing difference. The service was prompt and professional and at the same time friendly and relaxed. Honestly it has been hard to think of where to go for a nice evening out.
