Killer Wines, Killer Prices, Killer Vibe Mendo Vino is where Mendocino's wine scene really shines. The wine selection is absolutely fire. This place contains all the local gems, thoughtfully picked, and honestly some of the best around. When I stopped by, Michael was so nice and welcoming. He actually took the time to chat with me, listened to what I liked, and helped me find exactly the right wine no pressure, just genuine advice. Seriously, it felt like having a friend guide me through the shelves and I went home with just the right flavor of wine. And now to the prices. Shockingly good. You get amazing quality without having to empty your wallet. The vibe is cool, chill, and totally unpretentious, perfect for kicking back with a glass and soaking in that Mendocino magic. The wine selection is very good and he does not mark up the bottle prices very much, either. However, the manager (or owner?) was pretty rude to us. We asked if they did tastings, and he said no, you usually only buy bottles here. We asked if we could try a specific wine by the glass, but was immediately told no, and that specific bottle is too cheap to offer glasses. The experience was not pleasant. We drank our glass of wine and left. He wasn't even inside the bar to tell us about the wine, either. He spent most of the time on his phone outside and smoking a cigarette. I was staying at Mendocino Grove with a friend for the weekend and we went into town because who doesn't need more booze when they camp? Ha. After having lunch, we walked around to check out some of the local shops. We were super excited to find MendoVino was open. We really wanted to make sure we shopped locally and supported the small businesses. We checked out a few of the wines and ended up buy a VERY nice Cab. The store was cute and the service was great. The owner of Mendovino is what makes this place one star. My husband and I frequent Mendocino every year. We have fond memories of every place we go there. Even if I don't remember what we ate or drank, we remember the nice people and the good times we had. Mendocino is built on small business. Customer service is key. I think this owner believes he owns a Michelin Star wine bar. I'm not sure who in life told him how great he was or didn't tell him enough, but he needs to pull his head out of his ass. Maybe he should have a few glasses of wine himself. Not only was he pretentious and rude, he was truly the only low point we've ever had in our 5 year 2x a year trips to Mendocino. He charged us 40 dollars for three small pours of wine. There is no view to be had or great service to experience. I'm not sure what we paid 40 dollars for but we won't be spending it again. My husband and I are happy to pay premium especially in places we love like Mendocino, but this experience just left me confused. Skip this place and spend your time and money elsewhere. read more

I came up to Mendocino to escape LA for the weekend. It had been a couple years since my last visit and I was pleased to find this gem while shopping at one of the shops I had enjoyed in prior years. I found out the wine bartender was actually the owner of the bar and the gift shop. He has exceptional taste, which is obvious from the aesthetic of both places. His wine selection followed suit. We had a couple glasses of different wines and left with two bottles and a lot of laughs. Humor, cheese, chocolates, and wine... yep I'll be back! Thanks again! MendoVino is what it says, Mendocino vino that boasts locally grown grapes barreled and bottled in Mendocino county. The wine bar itself is a quaint and cozy back room behind a cute country store. It's decorated in western and woodsy accents, and exudes a welcoming vibe. The owner, Michael, is a gracious host who knows all of the nuances of the wine he pours and only pours what he would drink himself, and I'd say he has good taste. I was very impressed with his knowledge of the wine industry. I ended up purchasing as much as I could carry, which was not less than a case. I cannot wait to return to this area again and visit MendoVino again for more eclectic wine tasting. read more

My husband and I came up to Mendocino to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary. I LOVE THE NORTHERN COAST! Weather, Beautiful! Seagull Inn, Soooo cute and the owners Sweet! Food, to die for! We're lay back folk who just love to socialize and chat with people. Seems everyone came here to get away from the 100+ weather everywhere else. So, were walking around getting the lay of the land and the first shop we go into is Mendo Vino, cute from the outside and cafe was bustling. So, of course, I had to go in and see what I could blow some money on. I put my mask on and go in about 10' , some lovely body massage oils caught my attention, so as i pick one up to smell it I'm flirting with my husband, I notice someone with a loud somewhat angry voice..I continue with my husband, voice got LOUDER! My husband says move in hun they need to get thru so I did. Then the man YELLS " DON'T TOUCH THAT", my husband and I realize he's yelling at me, again he yells "CAN'T YOU SEE THE SIGN?" Well anyone who knows me will tell you NO, she can't, not well. As he continues to pass by with food he YELLS, "YOU BOUGHT IT, YOU BOUGHT IT!" I'm stunned and still not entirely sure what the heck just happened? I said I'm out, this is ridiculous, I wonder if the owner knows this is how his employees are treating their customers. We went back the next day to meet the owner Michael, and express concern for the servers rude behavior. I own a business and would never speak to anyone like this. My intent was to say "if the server would have just said ma'am we don't allow touching of items, see we have signs, I would have apologized and moved on to looking. But guess what? Yep, the server was the owner. Not only did he not apologize for his sudden outburst but called me into the area to show me the sign (school me one more time!) at which point his cow of a wife starts yelling at me too to get out of the store with our water bottles as I'm trying to discuss this with the owner "he's calling me in to make his point and she's screaming at me to get out"! Neither of which is listening to the customer. By the way, I went to several stores after and none said I could not touch their stuff but rather let them know if I did touch anything to just let them know so it may be cleaned. Polite, courteous and kind, of which, none of these qualities were shown to me by Michael or anyone else in the store. Shame on you Michael! Some people may find you knowledgeable about wine's, but you are rude, hurtful and obnoxious. You need to listen more and talk less. Do not go here if you have any amount of joy in your life, he will suck it right out of you! read more

Just spent an hour with Michael at his wine bar. Wow such an eye opener to the smaller wine producers in Anderson Valley. Michael knows his wine and gives an insiders view of the great small batch wines available. I will be back next year to learn more from him. I give the Country Store and the female clerk that greeted us in front a 4 star rating but Mendo Vino Wine Bar in the back of the store is a solid 1 star. Although the decor of the wine bar is nice, the man whom I believe is the owner of both the store and Mendo Vino wine bar in the back is incredibly rude. My husband & I were referred to the wine bar by a local winery to taste their wine and were interested in buying a bottle after we had tried an earlier year of their Pinot Noir at a local restaurant. The "owner" seemed perturbed that he was called away from relaxing on the bench outside his store to help us from the get go. Both my husband and I thought his demeanor would improve, so we kept it light and let some of his rude behavior slide, thinking he probably had a busy weekend (Memorial Day Weekend) & he was burnt out, but unfortunately his behavior only got worse. When we told him why we were there, he abruptly Informed us that he's not a "tasting room" and he sells wine by the glass or you can buy a bottle, but that he will let us taste any fo the 10 wines he had open. I asked if I could buy a glass of the Pinot I was interested in since he did not have the year that I had at the restaurant & he rudely said I could only taste or buy a glass of the 10 he had opened. So I asked to taste the 2 open Pinots to compare to the 1 I liked and he poured me a taste of each. When I asked a question about the business practices of the wines I tasted he became increasingly rude and sarcastic telling me that all the wines he sells are good and are from small winery's with limited production. He said it so sarcastically that I asked if everything was ok, and he said yes, but he felt I was missing the concept of his store; I said I think I got it; they sell wine by the glass and bottle. I explained that we're on vacation trying to have fun, & that he's been rude since we got there. He then looked at me and said, "If you don't like it get out". And get out I did. He lost a sale and will get a bad review. At first I thought if he is an employee & he needs to be fired, but after some research on the internet it revealed he is most likely the owner of both the store and the wine bar in back. If he is the owner he should hire someone that is friendly to deal with the customers, like the clerk in the store or he should take a business 101 course and learn how to treat customers. I live in Napa Valley & our tourist rate is 2nd to Disneyland, I would never treat a tourist like that, tourist are your bread & butter. I frequent the quaint village of Mendocino every year and have for the last 18 years & I've never encountered anyone as rude as the "owner" of this store/wine bar. read more
