On the drive from the Bay Area to the Mendocino coast, you have options on routes to take. But the most delicious is following the winding road through Anderson Valley wine region which is replete with wineries and eateries along the entire stretch of this Northern California appellation. And towards the northern extreme of the valley are the spectacular vineyards of Roederer Estates and the home of some of the best sparkling wines in Northern California. Situated atop a hill with a commanding view of the vineyards, valley, and surrounding mountains, Roederer has a beautifully modern tasting room and new outdoor patio with abundant seating and umbrellas for shade. On the day we visited it was 81F outside in the sun, but thanks to the natural air conditioning of a Pacific breeze from the coast, it was super comfortable on the deck. Roederer has everything from traditional tastings of various house wines (mixed vintages, estate reserve, and flights) to wines by the glass to bottles if you are in the mood. Prices vary by vintage, but begin around $18 for a glass and go up. Tastings begin at $35. Bottles begin at $40. Members of wine clubs receive an approximate 20% discount on bottles and tastings. In addition to wines, a limited but nicely curated selection of nibbles are available (think Marcona almonds, olives, prosciutto and cheeses, and duck rillettes, but if you're feeling indulgent they also offer a variety of Tzar Nikolai caviar options that can break the bank). We ordered the duck rillettes which were yummy, albeit a very small portion and not house made. Also, they did not come with crackers, which were an additional charge. This was our only gripe, because do people just eat the rillettes straight out of the jar with a knife?!? But that aside, we loved our sparkling wine selection (a bottle of Brut rosé) and the casual luxury of enjoying our bottle on the outside patio during a gorgeous summer afternoon. Service was quick, attentive, knowledgeable, courteous and friendly, but not hovering or overbearing. Perfect balance. A poorly managed, lazy business hiding behind a beautiful landscape. My wife and I were in Mendocino for a family trip/mini honeymoon. Friday afternoon, we decided to venture out toward Philo to explore the vineyards in the area and stop by for some wine tastings. Roederer caught our eye off Hwy 128, so our group of 4 decided to go for a quick glass to enjoy the beautiful view. Enticed by the large door and expansive patio, we walked in to order our wines around 4:25pm. A taller long haired man greeted us with "Hey, sorry we're at full capacity" was our greeting. No hello, no welcome to our estate. I let him know we just stopped by for a glass and were not there for a full tasting. Uninterested, he just repeated that they were at capacity and finished for the day. Their hours state that they close at 5, and rejecting 1 glass of wine at 30 minutes before closing seems absurd and rather lazy to me. Let the photos speak for themselves...half of the interior tables being available, along with half the exterior being available meant full capacity. Quality sparkling wines, with ambience that is in the midst of a face-lift. Their tasting room and patio are currently under renovation, so seatings are limited and a bit cramped (especially with the rainy weather). Despite the construction-zone ambience, their wines remain top tier. Came with a group for a 12:30pm tasting on a Sunday and had an indoor table squeezed between the door and the bar. Not the most comfortable location, as every time the door was opened we were blasted with cold air, but at least our reservation ensured we were indoors. We opted for the L'Ermitage flight, which includes their new release, single vineyard Apple Alley, the 2017 L'Ermitage Brut, the 2006 Late Disgorged L'Ermitage Brut, the 2015 L'Ermitage Brut Rosé, and ends with the 2004 L'Ermitage Brut Rosé. My preference was for the 2015 L'Ermitage Brut Rosé, followed by the newly released Apple Alley and the 2017 L'Ermitage Brut. Sadly (or luckily due to their price point), I found the 2006 and 2004 vintages to be slightly sweet and not my preferred bubbly. How have a not written a review for Roederer Estate yet?! An absolute must-visit winery if you find yourself in Anderson Valley. Iconic sparkling wine and friendly service!! We've been quite a few times for their reserved tasting and have tried out their food offerings which are really great (amazing sushi, caviar, cheese + honey are a few of the amazing things on the menu). We were up in Philo for my birthday this year and decided to try out their tour and omg... one of my favorite wine tours yet!! Was super informative and I left with a new appreciation of everything a bottle goes through to end up in your glass. Even though the tasting room is currently undergoing construction - it doesn't impact the experience at all. Highly recommend signing up for the tour. My wife and I visited Roederer on our way home from a trip to Oregon this week. We have fond memories of this place from when we first moved to California, nearly 30 yrs ago. Their sparkling wines are still as good as ever and it certainly is a beautiful place to sit and sip bubbles. Unfortunately though, we didn't receive a particularly warm welcome this time. Our server was competent enough at describing the wines but he came across as arrogant and more interested in himself than us. We did decide to buy a couple of bottles but had to wait quite a long time to pay for them while our server finished up with his other party. I do appreciate knowledgeable servers, but a friendliness is equally important. Maybe he was having an off day. We won't be going back to find out. read more

Disappointing experience. Sparkling wine with a gorgeous view...how could you go wrong? Let me tell you...While the sparkling wine is tasty and the views spectacular, our tasting room server was less than enthusiastic to be there to and turned our experience a little sideways for us on our nice getaway tasting day. It was really uncomfortable! In addition, we had to look around a few times to see if he was coming back to our table and toward the end of our tasting, remind that we had pre-paid for a cheese platter that we hadn't seen yet. (I understand they have to pre-charge for some tastings but I'm not a fan of that here or any winery). Now here is the biggest disappointment. After buying products ($220 worth) at the end of our tasting I was super disappointed to find the Sparkling Rose down the street at a market for $3 cheaper and then a bigger price difference at Costco for the Brut, $8 cheaper. I'm sure spending $200 plus tasting fees and a meager cheese platter may be considered pennie's from an establishment that makes Cristal, but we are just average people who splurged for a much needed weekend getaway and now regret spending it there for that kind of experience. There's something that's both timeless and elegant when sipping on the remarkable sparkling wines produced at Roederer Estate. Located in the rustic city of Philo in the Anderson Valley along Highway 128 in Mendocino County, California, Roederer Estate was founded forty years ago by Jean-Claude Rouzaud, who has since passed along winemaking duties to that of his son Frédéric. The Rouzaud family recognized the importance of growing their vines on their own estate as the key to making the highest quality wines. By tapping into their French heritage and wine cultivating techniques, Roederer Estate has established itself as the go-to destination for some of the best sparkling wine that the state has to offer. What brought a friend and I on a recent road trip to the Anderson Valley from the greater Bay Area was the fact that we wanted to partake in their Sparkling Wine Tasting, which for forty-five dollars, we had the opportunity to sip on five of their Brut Sparkling Wines, all while paired with the expertly crafted dishes from their food menu. A reasonably priced tasting mixed with handcrafted dishes that are expertly paired with sparkling wines, all while overlooking their spectacular vineyards in Anderson Valley had us sold for a wonderful afternoon of sipping and noshing. Sitting indoors made for the most ideal afternoon as the weather outside was rather damp on the day we chose to enjoy our tasting. Upon being sat at one of their tables in their tasting room, our tasting room associate Elaine treated us to two pours of their Brut Multi Vintage, one from a traditional bottle and one from a magnum bottle. Both wines were crisp and elegant, by taking these sips we could taste the difference in the amount of years in which each wines' grapes are harvested and aged. For our third pour, we enjoyed their Brut Rosé which had more Pinot Noir in its blend than their multi vintage brut wines. For our fourth pour, we enjoyed their 2017 L'Ermitage, which had an aroma of green apples, pears and hazelnut on the nose, and we learned it had a longer aging process, which helped to change the complexity of the wine. We even were able to enjoy an extra pour of their 2004 L'Ermitage, which had a lower amount of fizz thanks to the brighter acidity being toned down thanks to the extra aging on the yeast during the wine making process. For our sixth and final pour, we enjoyed their Extra Dry which was actually an extra sweet wine, as it would have made for a solid dessert wine, as it was the same blend as the first two glasses of Brut Multi Vintage with a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. What makes Roederer Estate stand out from the rest is that they promote a food pairing menu which features a great amount of food that pairs so well with all of their wines. We went to town as we enjoyed their Eggs Mimosa which were deviled eggs topped with gold pearl trout rose, citrus and garden herbs; their Meat & Potatoes, which were slices of prosciutto served with a generous portion of olive oil potato chips; and their Cheese Board which featured Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam and Matos St. Jorge cheeses, sea salted crackers, fig cake and olives. To top off our meal we enjoyed their Tsar Nicoulai caviar, as their Gold Pearl Trout Roe was served on a bed of ice and served with potato chips, crème fraîche and chives. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon with sparkling wine and an abundance of high caliber dishes, and it was affordable to boot, as it cost us 80 dollars a person, which was rather reasonable. Where else in Northern California can you get a flight of sparkling wines paired with caviar, potato chips and deviled eggs? Not many as far as I am concerned, and when the wines are lovingly crafted and crisp as they are served at Roederer Estate, then it is an experience worth partaking in. read more

We've been members at Roederer for 8-10 years. Recent visit was quite disappointing. Walked in on a rainy day, no one was inside or at the front desk, so we walk up to the bar to say we were interested in a tasting. The guy at the bar, before we could even finish our sentence said you have to wait at the front desk to arrange a tasting. So we stand there and wait for someone to come. We were then presented with a menu of various tastings. Only one of which was now complimentary to members - this was disappointing since it only included wines they widely distribute and the rest were $25 and up. They did say they had wines by the glass that were complimentary, but when we ordered them, we were then told that the l'ermitage on the by the glass list was not actually complimentary but discounted - we were charged $18 for the glass. They said they also had some small bites we could order, but never came back to the table to ask if we wanted to order anything. The service was unfortunately just cold and non-existent. Honestly it felt uncomfortable being in the tasting room. More unfortunate is that this isn't the first time we had this experience. read more

Roederer was on our list while visiting the philo area for wine tasting. I tried to make prepaid reservation before coming here but we were a party of 4 with 2 tasters and two teens. But the website would charge for 4 tasters so we decided to just walk in on a Tuesday afternoon since website showed many openings. However the lady at check in turned us down. I saw so many empty tables but she said they were busy and the only option was to get wine by the glass. I did end up getting a glass but was hoping for a proper tasting experience which we didn't get. I wish the lady at front desk was more accommodating, instead she told us to go to their sister property schaffenberger where they would accommodate us. Upon arrival, make sure you check-in at the main entrance before going to the outdoor seating area. The tasting included 5 tastings of which there was one side by side. Brut Cuvee is widely distributed and available at places like Costco but here you get to taste Magnums, sparkling Rosé, and extra dry sparkling. Over 100 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area proper is Roederer Estate. Family owned (I think 6 generations now to date) they, farm their own Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. They have their own winemakers who produce the Bruts, Brut Rose, L'Ermitage and Extra Dry sparking wines. Their wine tasting room is located on Highway 128 in the city of Philo in the Anderson Valley. You can do their wine tasting for $10 and receive a signature flute. You will receive a discount to any bottles you choose to purchase. They ship to all parts of the Continental United States. Their pricing is a tad less than what you would find in any wine store. I'm going to call this the house of bubbly! Their selection of bubbly wine is quite extensive here and it's undoubtedly what Roederer is known for. Located along the beautiful hills of Philo, you will find the immaculate Roederer Estate. The Estate itself is simply gorgeous, starting right from the entrance. I have to admit that I was the most excited to enter their estate because the outside is just huge! They offer rows of beautiful vineyards and ample parking. The tasting room was definitely one of the liveliest that I experienced when being in the Anderson Valley. It let me know that the people of Mendocino really love that bubbly! The tasting room offers just one tasting bar and it can get a bit cramped when it gets busy. The outside patio is viewable from the parking lot and offers umbrella shaded tables for the nice warm weather. The service wasn't particularly the greatest when I went, but it could have simply just been my specific bartender or the fact that they were busy. Either way, this was quite a let down and the reason for the 3 star rating. As far as the wines go, I wasn't super impressed with their wine selection as a whole. Granted, I may be a bit biased as I am primarily a red wine drinker. However, I've had some wonderful brut wines in the past, and I wouldn't say that I'd put Roederer's wines at the top of my list. The Brut Rose was my favorite and also the crowd favorite as I was told (go figure!). It was sweet and crisp with just the right amount of bubbles to not overwhelm. Some others that I sampled included: their Brut MV, Brut MV Magnum, 2009 L'Ermitage, Extra Dry MV, 2015 Chardonnay, and their 2014 Pinot Noir. I'm not a fan of Chardonnay or dry white wines, so naturally I wasn't a fan of their Chardonnay or their Extra dry MV brut. The Brut MV was very refreshing but the Brut MV Magnum was less sweet and a little on the dry side for me. The biggest let down for me was their Pinot Noir. It just simply wasn't good at all. But, what can you expect from a winery that primarily specializes in sparkling wines? I can't totally hold it against them, but in the end I expected more. Would I come back again? YOU HAD ME AT SPARKLING WINE! We were here for Yelp's Grape Escape - Alexander Valley. Many of us were ecstatic to see that Roederer Estate was one of the seven participating wineries for the day. We had a groovy time sipping bubbles. The winery is stunning. I knew we had to go backwards on Hwy 128 after Handley Cellars, as this would be the first stop for many rookie Yelpers on their first Grape Escape LOL! We made this our final stop, that's how OG's like us do it. I knew they had almost 75+ Yelpers stop in at once, so coming here later in the afternoon made this stop the perfect finale. Charlie poured us sparkling deliciousness, and the entire staff was warm and welcoming. A nice young lady chatted with us to see how our day was, and how they attended to a large group of Yelpers the first round. She agreed it was smart for us to stagger in before closing time, almost giving them a break in between. By this time next year, we'll be pros at this, making sure we don't follow the crowds. We had a great time on a very beautiful day at Roederer. They specialize in sparkling wines and we were able to try all that they had open. Their widely distributed label is a solid sparking wine that is available almost everywhere. They let you try the magnum version of the nonvintage, but we really didn't taste much different. I came with friends in the past and enjoyed flights. In June, we were able to do different flights. This time, I wanted to do a more reserve flight but was notified that the entire table must do the same flight because "it gets too confusing". Unsure if that is for the tasters or for the staff. I work in wine sales and hospitality and recognize folks can run their business how they see fit. Just saying, if executed right, this shouldn't be a big deal and would have netted them potentially more in tastings and even sales. The food add-ons are nice and varied. I have had the smoked salmon twice and it's very good. It's also a bit odd to be presented with a placemat with glass positions for five wines and to be poured one at a time. Sometimes it's fun to compare and contrast. However, not being a fan of polishing a ton of glassware, I get it. Most other sparkling houses do it that way though. It seems some Covid protocols are still in place which can make certain aspects of their hospitality a bit awkward. If it is definitely a trek if you are expecting to visit while in Sonoma County/Napa County, as it is a few hours drive from both located in the Anderson Valley AVA. Once you arrive, you may not be blown away from the aesthetics of the facility, but it has been around for quite some time. Do not let that get you down though as the grounds bring out some amazing views of the valley as it is perched atop a hill. As for the staff, I found them very kind and proud of the products they were pouring. A few of them were very knowledgeable, which was great as I do not know too much about the bubble production lifecycle. As for the tasting, walk ins accepted and a sub $20 dollar tasting fee makes it very attracable to the budget friend wine taster. Keep in mind also this is not what I call a 3 or 4 and done tasting, they let you walk through their entire fleet with generous pours, so be prepared. As for the wine, I loved them all, but if I had to really pick out a few winners, I'd say the Brut MV and Rose Brut were the winners for me. $30 dollars later, I was out the door with a tasty treat for a later time as well (Rose Brut)! Easily bookmarked for future visits and will recommend to any bubbles lovers if any the area as there are not too many anywhere near Roederer Estate. read more

A lovely estate that does sparkling wine tastings on their outdoor patio that overlooks the road and valley and hills. Very pretty views and the service was fine. The sparkling wines were quite tasty, just a bit out of our price range. read more
